Solomon builds the temple [ a ]

6 Solomon began to build the Lord 's temple 480 years after the Israelites had left Egypt. It was in the fourth year that he had ruled Israel as king. He started the work in the month called Ziv, the second month of the year. [ b ]

2 The temple that King Solomon built for the Lord was 27 metres long. It was 9 metres wide. It was 13.5 metres high. 3 The temple had an entrance room in front of its big hall. The entrance room was as wide as the temple, 9 metres wide. It came 4.5 metres out from the front of the temple itself. 4 Solomon made narrow windows near the tops of the temple walls. [ c ] 5 Solomon built rooms around the outside of the temple walls. These rooms continued outside the big hall and the inside room. The side rooms were on three levels. [ d ] 6 The lowest level of rooms was 2.3 metres wide. The middle level was 2.7 metres wide and the top level was 3.2 metres wide. Each floor was built on wooden beams. The beams rested on stones in the temple walls, so that there were no holes that they cut into the walls.

7 When they built the temple, they used stones that were the right shape. Workers had already cut the stones at the place where they came from. There was no sound of hammers, axes or any iron tools at the place of the temple. 8 The door to the lowest level of rooms on the sides of the temple was on the south side of the temple. Stairs went up to the middle level and to the top level. [ e ]

9 Solomon finished building the temple. He made the roof with wooden beams and with cedar boards. 10 He also built the rooms around the sides of the temple. Each room was 2.3 metres high. Cedar beams fixed the rooms to the temple building.

11 Then the Lord gave this message to Solomon:

12 ‘I will make my home in this temple that you are building. I will do everything for you that I promised to your father David. But you must obey my laws, rules and commands. 13 Then I will live among my people, the Israelites. I will never leave them.’

14 So Solomon finished building the temple. 15 He used cedar boards to cover the walls on the inside of the temple. The boards went from the floor of the temple up to its ceiling. He covered the floor of the temple with wood from pine trees. 16 He built a wall across the inside of the temple to make a separate room. That wall was 9 metres from the back wall of the temple. The inside room was the Most Holy Place. [ f ] The walls were covered with cedar boards from the floor to the ceiling. 17 The big hall in front of the Most Holy Place was 18 metres long. 18 The inside of the temple was covered with boards made of cedar wood. The workers cut pictures of fruits and flowers on the wood. The cedar boards completely covered the stone walls, so you could not see any stone.

19 Solomon prepared the inside room to be the Most Holy Place where they would put the Lord 's Covenant Box. 20 The inside room was 9 metres long, 9 metres wide and 9 metres high. Solomon used pure gold to cover the walls of this room. He also covered the cedar altar with gold. 21 Solomon covered all the walls inside the temple with gold. He also hung gold chains across the entrance to the Most Holy Place. He covered everything there with gold. 22 So he covered everything inside the whole temple with gold. That included the altar that was inside the Most Holy Place.

23 Solomon used olive wood to make models of two cherubs to stand in the Most Holy Place. Each cherub was 4.4 metres tall. 24 The first cherub had two wings that were 2.2 metres long each. So it was 4.4 metres from the end of one wing to the end of the other wing. 25 The second cherub was also 4.4 metres across its wings. The two cherubs were the same size and the same shape. 26 Each cherub was 4.4 metres high. 27 Solomon put the cherubs in the inside room of the temple. Their wings went from one wall of the temple to the other wall. One cherub's wing touched one wall of the temple. One of the other cherub's wings touched the other wall. And their wings touched each other in the middle of the room. 28 Solomon covered the cherubs with gold.

29 Solomon's workers cut pictures in the wood on the walls of the big hall and the inside room. They were pictures of cherubs, palm trees and flowers. 30 They also covered the floors of both the rooms with gold. 31 They used olive wood to make doors for the entrance to the Most Holy Place. The doors were fixed to wooden pillars which had five sides. 32 The wooden doors had pictures of cherubs, palm trees and flowers. Solomon covered the pictures of the cherubs and the palm trees with very thin gold. 33 The doors to the big hall of the temple were fixed to pillars made of olive wood. Those pillars had four sides. 34 Solomon also made two doors from pine wood. Each door had two separate parts that could turn. 35 He cut pictures of cherubs, palm trees and flowers on those doors too. He covered them with gold in the same way.

36 Solomon also built a yard around the temple building. The wall around the yard had three rows of special stones, then a row of cedar beams, and so on.

37 They built the foundation of the Lord 's temple in the fourth year that Solomon was king. It was in the month called Ziv. 38 They finished building the temple in the 11th year that Solomon was king. It was the eighth month, the month called Bul. So they built the temple in seven years, exactly as the plans showed that it should be.

Footnotes

  1. 6:1 King Solomon did not do the work himself. He told his officers what they must do.
  2. 6:1 This was probably in April or May 966 BC.
  3. 6:4 The windows were narrow. They may have let smoke out rather than let light in.
  4. 6:5 There were only two rooms inside the temple. There was a big hall and a smaller room, called the ‘Most Holy Place’. Around the outside there were small rooms. They were on three levels. That means that they built the rooms above each other. There were stairs which went to the rooms that were above the ground level.
  5. 6:8 Each level was about 2.3 metres high. That is why the windows were high up (verse 4).
  6. 6:16 The big hall of the temple was the Holy Place. At the back of the temple, the inside room was the Most Holy Place. Only the leader of the priests could go in there on one day every year.

Solomon Builds the Temple

6 So in the month of Ziv, the second month of the year, during Solomon’s fourth year as king, he began work on the Temple. This was 480 years after the Israelites left Egypt. [ a ] 2 The Temple was 60 cubits [ b ] long, 20 cubits [ c ] wide, and 30 cubits [ d ] high. 3 The porch of the Temple was 20 cubits long and 10 cubits [ e ] wide. The porch ran along the front of the main part of the Temple itself. Its length was equal to the width of the Temple. 4 There were narrow windows in the Temple. These windows were smaller on the inside of the wall than on the outside. [ f ] 5 Then Solomon built a row of rooms around the main part of the Temple. This row of rooms was three stories tall with the rooms built one above the other. 6 The rooms touched the Temple wall, but their beams were not built into that wall. The Temple wall became thinner at the top, so the rooms on the upper floors were larger than the ones below them. The rooms on the bottom floor were 5 cubits [ g ] wide. The rooms on the middle floor were 6 cubits [ h ] wide. The rooms above that were 7 cubits [ i ] wide. 7 The stones were completely finished before they were brought into the Temple area, so there was no noise of hammers, axes, or any other iron tools in the Temple.

8 The entrance to these rooms was on bottom floor at the south side of the Temple. Inside there were stairs that went up to the second floor and from there to the third floor.

9 Solomon finished building the main part of the Temple and then covered it inside with cedar boards. 10 Then he finished building the rooms around the Temple. Each story was 5 cubits tall. The cedar beams in these rooms rested on a ledge of the Temple wall.

11 The Lord said to Solomon, 12 “If you obey all my laws and commands, I will do for you what I promised your father David. 13 I will live among the children of Israel in this Temple that you are building, and I will never leave the people of Israel.”

14 When Solomon finished the stonework on the Temple, 15 the stone walls inside the Temple were covered with cedar boards from floor to ceiling. Then the stone floor was covered with pine boards. 16 They built an inner room 20 cubits long in the back part of the Temple. This room was called the Most Holy Place. They covered the walls in this room with cedar boards, from floor to ceiling. 17 In front of the Most Holy Place was the main part of the Temple. This room was 40 cubits [ j ] long. 18 They covered the walls in this room with cedar boards—none of the stones in the walls could be seen. They carved pictures of flowers and gourds into the cedar.

19 Solomon finished the inner room in the back part of the Temple. This room was for the Box of the Lord ’s Agreement. 20 This room was 20 cubits long, 20 cubits wide, and 20 cubits high. Solomon covered this room with pure gold. He also covered the cedar altar with gold. 21 He covered the inside of the Temple with pure gold and wrapped gold chains around it. 22 The inside of the Temple was covered with gold, and the altar in front of the Most Holy Place was covered with gold.

23 The workers made two statues of Cherub angels with wings. They made the statues from olive wood and put them in the Most Holy Place. Each angel was 10 cubits tall. 24-26 Both Cherub angels were the same size and built the same way. Each one had two wings. Each wing was 5 cubits long. From the end of one wing to the end of the other wing was 10 cubits. And each Cherub angel was 10 cubits tall. 27 They put the Cherub angels beside one another in the Most Holy Place. Their wings touched each other in the middle of the room. The other two wings touched each side wall. 28 The two Cherub angels were covered with gold.

29 The walls around the main room and the inner room were carved with pictures of Cherub angels, palm trees, and flowers. 30 The floor of both rooms was covered with gold.

31 The workers made two doors from olive wood. They put these doors at the entrance of the Most Holy Place. The frame around the doors was made with five sides. [ k ] 32 They made the two doors from olive wood. The workers carved pictures of Cherub angels, palm trees, and flowers on the doors. Then they covered the doors with gold.

33 They also made doors for the entrance to the main room. They used olive wood to make a square doorframe. 34 There were two doors made from pine. Each door had two parts that folded together. 35 They carved pictures of Cherub angels, palm trees, and flowers on the doors. Then they covered them with gold.

36 Then they built a wall around the inner yard. Each wall was made from three rows of cut stones and one row of cedar timbers.

37 They started working on the Lord ’s Temple in the month of Ziv, the second month of the year. This was during Solomon’s fourth year as king of Israel. 38 The Temple was finished in the month of Bul, the eighth month of the year, in Solomon’s eleventh year as king. It took seven years to build the Temple. It was built exactly as planned.

6 And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the Lord .

2 And the house which king Solomon built for the Lord , the length thereof was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits, and the height thereof thirty cubits.

3 And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house; and ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house.

4 And for the house he made windows of narrow lights.

5 And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle: and he made chambers round about:

6 The nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.

7 And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.

8 The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.

9 So he built the house, and finished it; and covered the house with beams and boards of cedar.

10 And then he built chambers against all the house, five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.

11 And the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying,

12 Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:

13 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.

14 So Solomon built the house, and finished it.

15 And he built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar, both the floor of the house, and the walls of the ceiling: and he covered them on the inside with wood, and covered the floor of the house with planks of fir.

16 And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor and the walls with boards of cedar: he even built them for it within, even for the oracle, even for the most holy place.

17 And the house, that is, the temple before it, was forty cubits long.

18 And the cedar of the house within was carved with knops and open flowers: all was cedar; there was no stone seen.

19 And the oracle he prepared in the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of the Lord .

20 And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the altar which was of cedar.

21 So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he made a partition by the chains of gold before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold.

22 And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the house: also the whole altar that was by the oracle he overlaid with gold.

23 And within the oracle he made two cherubims of olive tree, each ten cubits high.

24 And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.

25 And the other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubims were of one measure and one size.

26 The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it of the other cherub.

27 And he set the cherubims within the inner house: and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.

28 And he overlaid the cherubims with gold.

29 And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.

30 And the floors of the house he overlaid with gold, within and without.

31 And for the entering of the oracle he made doors of olive tree: the lintel and side posts were a fifth part of the wall.

32 The two doors also were of olive tree; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold, and spread gold upon the cherubims, and upon the palm trees.

33 So also made he for the door of the temple posts of olive tree, a fourth part of the wall.

34 And the two doors were of fir tree: the two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding.

35 And he carved thereon cherubims and palm trees and open flowers: and covered them with gold fitted upon the carved work.

36 And he built the inner court with three rows of hewed stone, and a row of cedar beams.

37 In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of the Lord laid, in the month Zif:

38 And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.

The Building of the Temple

6 ( A ) Now it came about in the four hundred and eightieth year after the sons of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, that is, the second month, that he [ a ] began to build the house of the Lord . 2 And the house which King Solomon built for the Lord was [ b ] sixty cubits in its length, and twenty cubits in its width, and its height was thirty cubits. 3 The porch in front of the main room of the house was [ c ] twenty cubits in [ d ] length, [ e ] corresponding to the width of the house, and its width along the front of the house was ten cubits. 4 Also for the house ( B ) he made windows with artistic frames. 5 ( C ) Against the wall of the house he built stories encompassing the walls of the house around both the main room and the [ f ] ( D ) inner sanctuary; so he made ( E ) side chambers all around. 6 The lowest story was [ g ] five cubits wide, the middle was six cubits wide, and the third was seven cubits wide; for on the outside he [ h ] made offsets in the wall of the house all around so that the beams would not [ i ] be inserted into the walls of the house.

7 ( F ) The house, while it was being built, was built of stone finished at the quarry, and neither hammer, nor axe, nor any iron tool was heard in the house while it was being built.

8 The doorway for the [ j ] lowest side chamber was on the right side of the house; and they would go up by a winding staircase to the middle story , and from the middle to the third. 9 So ( G ) he built the house and finished it; and he covered the house with beams and [ k ] planks of cedar. 10 He also built the stories against the whole house, each [ l ] five cubits high; and they [ m ] were attached to the house with timbers of cedar.

11 Now the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying, 12 As for this house which you are building, ( H ) if you will walk in My statutes and execute My ordinances and keep all My commandments by walking in them, then I will fulfill My word with you which I spoke to David your father. 13 And ( I ) I will dwell among the sons of Israel, and ( J ) will not abandon My people Israel.”

14 ( K ) So Solomon built the house and finished it. 15 He ( L ) built the walls of the house on the inside with boards of cedar; from the floor of the house to the [ n ] ceiling he paneled the walls on the inside with wood, and he paneled the floor of the house with boards of juniper. 16 ( M ) He also built [ o ] twenty cubits on the rear part of the house with boards of cedar from the floor to the [ p ] ceiling; he built them for it on the inside as an inner sanctuary, as ( N ) the Most Holy Place. 17 The house, that is, the main room in front of the inner sanctuary , was [ q ] forty cubits long . 18 There was cedar inside the house, carved in the shape of ( O ) gourds and open flowers; everything was cedar, there was no stone visible. 19 Then he prepared an inner sanctuary inside the house in order to place there the ark of the covenant of the Lord . 20 [ r ] The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits in length, twenty cubits in width, and twenty cubits in height; and he overlaid it with pure gold. He also paneled the altar with cedar. 21 So Solomon overlaid the inside of the house with pure gold. And he extended chains of gold across the front of the inner sanctuary, and he overlaid it with gold. 22 He overlaid the entire house with gold, until all the house was finished. Also ( P ) the entire altar which was by the inner sanctuary he overlaid with gold.

23 ( Q ) And in the inner sanctuary he made two [ s ] cherubim of olive wood, each [ t ] ten cubits high. 24 The one wing of the first cherub was five cubits, and the other wing of the first cherub was five cubits; from the end of one wing to the end of the other wing were ten cubits. 25 The second cherub was ten cubits; both of the cherubim were of the same measurement and the same form. 26 The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was that of the other cherub. 27 He placed the cherubim in the midst of the inner house, and ( R ) the wings of the cherubim spread out so that the wing of the one was touching the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub was touching the other wall. And their wings were touching [ u ] end to [ v ] end in the center of the house. 28 He also overlaid the cherubim with gold.

29 Then he carved all the surrounding walls of the house with engravings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, for the inner and outer sanctuaries . 30 And he overlaid the floor of the house with gold, for the inner and outer sanctuaries .

31 And for the entrance of the inner sanctuary he made doors of olive wood, the lintel, and five-sided doorposts. 32 So he made two doors of olive wood, and he carved on them carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold; and he overlaid the cherubim and the palm trees with gold.

33 So too he made for the entrance of the main room four-sided doorposts of olive wood, 34 and ( S ) two doors of juniper wood; the two leaves of the one door turned on pivots, and the two [ w ] leaves of the other door turned on pivots. 35 He carved on it cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers; and he overlaid them with gold plated on the carved work. 36 And ( T ) he built the inner courtyard with three rows of cut stone and a row of cedar beams.

37 ( U ) In the fourth year the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid, in the month of Ziv. 38 And in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul, that is, the eighth month, the house was finished in all its parts and in accordance with all its plans. So he was seven years in building it.

Solomon Builds the Temple ( A )

6 In the four hundred and eightieth [ a ] year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, ( B ) he began to build the temple of the Lord . ( C )

2 The temple ( D ) that King Solomon built for the Lord was sixty cubits long, twenty wide and thirty high. [ b ] 3 The portico ( E ) at the front of the main hall of the temple extended the width of the temple, that is twenty cubits, [ c ] and projected ten cubits [ d ] from the front of the temple. 4 He made narrow windows ( F ) high up in the temple walls. 5 Against the walls of the main hall and inner sanctuary he built a structure around the building, in which there were side rooms. ( G ) 6 The lowest floor was five cubits [ e ] wide, the middle floor six cubits [ f ] and the third floor seven. [ g ] He made offset ledges around the outside of the temple so that nothing would be inserted into the temple walls.

7 In building the temple, only blocks dressed ( H ) at the quarry were used, and no hammer, chisel or any other iron tool ( I ) was heard at the temple site while it was being built.

8 The entrance to the lowest [ h ] floor was on the south side of the temple; a stairway led up to the middle level and from there to the third. 9 So he built the temple and completed it, roofing it with beams and cedar ( J ) planks. 10 And he built the side rooms all along the temple. The height of each was five cubits, and they were attached to the temple by beams of cedar.

11 The word of the Lord came ( K ) to Solomon: 12 “As for this temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, observe my laws and keep all my commands ( L ) and obey them, I will fulfill through you the promise ( M ) I gave to David your father. 13 And I will live among the Israelites and will not abandon ( N ) my people Israel.”

14 So Solomon ( O ) built the temple and completed ( P ) it. 15 He lined its interior walls with cedar boards, paneling them from the floor of the temple to the ceiling, ( Q ) and covered the floor of the temple with planks of juniper. ( R ) 16 He partitioned off twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with cedar boards from floor to ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. ( S ) 17 The main hall in front of this room was forty cubits [ i ] long. 18 The inside of the temple was cedar, ( T ) carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; no stone was to be seen.

19 He prepared the inner sanctuary ( U ) within the temple to set the ark of the covenant ( V ) of the Lord there. 20 The inner sanctuary ( W ) was twenty cubits long, twenty wide and twenty high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold, and he also overlaid the altar of cedar. ( X ) 21 Solomon covered the inside of the temple with pure gold, and he extended gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, which was overlaid with gold. 22 So he overlaid the whole interior with gold. He also overlaid with gold the altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary.

23 For the inner sanctuary he made a pair of cherubim ( Y ) out of olive wood, each ten cubits high. 24 One wing of the first cherub was five cubits long, and the other wing five cubits—ten cubits from wing tip to wing tip. 25 The second cherub also measured ten cubits, for the two cherubim were identical in size and shape. 26 The height of each cherub was ten cubits. 27 He placed the cherubim ( Z ) inside the innermost room of the temple, with their wings spread out. The wing of one cherub touched one wall, while the wing of the other touched the other wall, and their wings touched each other in the middle of the room. 28 He overlaid the cherubim with gold.

29 On the walls ( AA ) all around the temple, in both the inner and outer rooms, he carved cherubim, ( AB ) palm trees and open flowers. 30 He also covered the floors of both the inner and outer rooms of the temple with gold.

31 For the entrance to the inner sanctuary he made doors out of olive wood that were one fifth of the width of the sanctuary. 32 And on the two olive-wood doors ( AC ) he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with hammered gold. 33 In the same way, for the entrance to the main hall he made doorframes out of olive wood that were one fourth of the width of the hall. 34 He also made two doors out of juniper wood, each having two leaves that turned in sockets. 35 He carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers on them and overlaid them with gold hammered evenly over the carvings.

36 And he built the inner courtyard ( AD ) of three courses ( AE ) of dressed stone and one course of trimmed cedar beams.

37 The foundation of the temple of the Lord was laid in the fourth year, in the month of Ziv. 38 In the eleventh year in the month of Bul, the eighth month, the temple was finished in all its details ( AF ) according to its specifications. ( AG ) He had spent seven years building it.
