Solomon's officers

4 King Solomon ruled over all Israel as king. 2 These were his important officers:

Zadok's son Azariah was the priest.

3 Shisha's sons, Elihoreph and Ahijah, were secretaries.

Ahilud's son Jehoshaphat recorded what happened.

4 Jehoiada's son Benaiah was the leader of the army.

Zadok and Abiathar were priests.

5 Nathan's son Azariah had authority over the 12 officers for each region.

Nathan's son Zabud was a priest who gave the king advice.

6 Ahishar had authority over work in the palace.

Abda's son Adoniram had authority over the groups of workers.

7 Solomon had 12 officers with authority in the regions of Israel. They supplied food for the king and for the people who lived in his palace. Each officer had to supply food to the king for one month in each year. 8 These are their names:

Ben-Hur had authority in Ephraim's hill country.

9 Ben-Deker had authority in Makaz, Shaalbim, Beth Shemesh and Elon Beth Hanan.

10 Ben-Hesed had authority in Arubboth. That included Sokoh and all the fields around Hepher.

11 Ben-Abinadab had authority in Naphath Dor. He had married Solomon's daughter, Taphath.

12 Ahilud's son Baana had authority in Taanach and Megiddo, as well as in all of Beth-Shan that is near Zarethan, below Jezreel. He had authority from Beth-Shan to Abel-Meholah and as far as Jokmeam.

13 Ben-Geber had authority in Ramoth Gilead. That included the villages of Manasseh's son Jair in Gilead. It also included the region of Argob in Bashan with 60 large cities which had strong walls gates with bronze bars. [ a ]

14 Iddo's son had authority in Mahanaim.

15 Ahimaaz had authority in Naphtali. He had married Solomon's daughter, Basemath.

16 Hushai's son Baana had authority in Asher and Aloth.

17 Paruah's son Jehoshaphat had authority in Issachar.

18 Ela's son Shimei had authority in Benjamin.

19 Uri's son Geber had authority in Gilead. Gilead was the region where Sihon, king of the Amorites, and Og, king of Bashan, had ruled. [ b ]

There was also one officer who had authority over the whole land.

Solomon's kingdom

20 The people in Judah and Israel were too many to count. There were as many of them as the sand on the shore of the sea. They had enough to eat and to drink and they were happy.

21 Solomon ruled over all the nations from the Euphrates river to the land of the Philistines, as far as Egypt's border. The people of these kingdoms paid taxes to Solomon. They served him all the days of his life.

22 This is the food that Solomon and the people in his palace ate each day:

5,000 litres of flour.

10,000 litres of grain.

23 10 fat calves that they fed with grain.

20 calves that ate grass in the fields.

100 sheep.

Many kinds of deer and fat birds.

24 Solomon ruled all the kingdoms west of the Euphrates river, from Tiphsah as far as Gaza. There was peace in all these places. 25 While Solomon was alive, Judah and Israel were safe from their enemies. In the whole country, from Dan to Beersheba, every family had a place to live and they could grow food to eat. 26 Solomon had places to keep 4,000 horses that pulled his chariots. [ c ] He also had 12,000 horses. 27 The 12 officers in each region supplied food for King Solomon and for everybody that ate in his palace. Each region supplied food for one month each year so that there was enough for everyone. 28 Each officer also supplied barley and straw for the king's horses. They took the right amount to the different places where the horses lived.

Solomon's wisdom

29 God gave Solomon wisdom so that he understood things well. He knew about everything, more things than there is sand on the shore of the sea! 30 Solomon was wiser than all the wise men in the East and all the wise men in Egypt. 31 He was wiser than any other man. This includes Ethan the Ezrahite, as well as Heman, Calcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. [ d ] Solomon was famous in all the nations around Israel. 32 He wrote down 3,000 proverbs and he wrote 1,005 songs. [ e ] 33 He could describe many plants. These included large trees like cedar trees that grow in Lebanon and small plants like hyssop that grows on walls. He also taught people about all kinds of animals, birds, insects and fish. [ f ] 34 People came from all countries to listen to Solomon's wise teaching. Kings of all the nations in the world who heard about Solomon's wisdom sent people to learn from him.

Solomon’s Kingdom

4 King Solomon ruled over all Israel. 2 These are the names of his leading officials:

Azariah son of Zadok was the priest;

3 Elihoreph and Ahijah, sons of Shisha, had the job of writing notes about what happened in the courts;

Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud wrote notes about the history of the people;

4 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was the commander of the army;

Zadok and Abiathar were priests;

5 Azariah son of Nathan was in charge of the district governors;

Zabud son of Nathan was a priest and an advisor to King Solomon;

6 Ahishar was responsible for everything in the king’s palace;

Adoniram son of Abda was in charge of the slaves.

7 Israel was divided into twelve districts. Solomon chose governors to rule over each district. These governors were ordered to gather food from their districts and give it to the king and his family. Each of the twelve governors was responsible for giving food to the king one month each year. 8 These are the names of the twelve governors:

Ben Hur was governor of the hill country of Ephraim.

9 Ben Deker was governor of Makaz, Shaalbim, Beth Shemesh, and Elon Bethhanan.

10 Ben Hesed was governor of Arubboth, Socoh, and Hepher.

11 Ben Abinadab was governor of Naphoth Dor. He was married to Taphath, daughter of Solomon.

12 Baana son of Ahilud was governor of Taanach and Megiddo and all of Beth Shean next to Zarethan. This was below Jezreel, from Beth Shean to Abel Meholah across from Jokmeam.

13 Ben Geber was governor of Ramoth Gilead. He was governor of all the towns and villages of Jair son of Manasseh in Gilead. He was also governor of the district of Argob in Bashan. In this area there were 60 cities with big walls around them. These cities also had bronze bars on the gates.

14 Ahinadab son of Iddo was governor of Mahanaim.

15 Ahimaaz was governor of Naphtali. He was married to Basemath the daughter of Solomon.

16 Baana son of Hushai was governor of Asher and Aloth.

17 Jehoshaphat son of Paruah was governor of Issachar.

18 Shimei son of Ela was governor of Benjamin.

19 Geber son of Uri was governor of Gilead. There had been two kings in this area, King Sihon of the Amorites and King Og of Bashan, but Solomon appointed only one governor for that district.

20 In Judah and Israel there were as many people as sand on the seashore. The people were happy and had plenty to eat and drink.

21 Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines. His kingdom went as far as the border of Egypt. These countries sent gifts to Solomon, and they obeyed him all of his life. [ a ]

22-23 This is the amount of food that Solomon needed each day for himself and for everyone who ate at his table: 150 bushels [ b ] of fine flour, 300 bushels [ c ] of flour, 10 cattle that were fed grain, 20 cattle that were raised in the fields, 100 sheep, wild animals such as deer, gazelles, roebucks, [ d ] and game birds.

24 Solomon ruled over all the countries west of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah to Gaza. And Solomon had peace along all the borders of his kingdom. 25 During Solomon’s life everyone in Judah and Israel, all the way from Dan to Beersheba, lived in peace and security. The people were at peace sitting under their own fig trees and grapevines.

26 Solomon had places to keep 4000 [ e ] horses for his chariots and he had 12,000 horse soldiers. 27 And each month one of the twelve district governors gave King Solomon everything he needed for all the people who ate at the king’s table. 28 The district governors also gave the king enough straw and barley for the chariot horses and the riding horses. Everyone brought this grain to the necessary places.

Solomon’s Wisdom

29 God made Solomon very wise. Solomon could understand more than you can imagine. 30 He was wiser than anyone in the East [ f ] or in Egypt. 31 He was wiser than anyone on earth, even Ethan the Ezrahite and the sons of Mahol—Heman, Calcol, and Darda. King Solomon became famous in all the surrounding countries. 32 By the end of his life, he had written [ g ] 3000 proverbs and 1005 songs.

33 Solomon also knew very much about nature. He taught about many different kinds of plants—everything from the great cedar trees of Lebanon to the little vines that grow out of the walls. He also taught about animals, birds, and snakes. [ h ] 34 People from every nation came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom. Kings all over the world sent their people to listen to him.

20 Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making merry.

21 And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.

22 And Solomon's provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and threescore measures of meal,

23 Ten fat oxen, and twenty oxen out of the pastures, and an hundred sheep, beside harts, and roebucks, and fallowdeer, and fatted fowl.

24 For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.

25 And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.

26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.

27 And those officers provided victual for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon's table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing.

28 Barley also and straw for the horses and dromedaries brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.

29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.

30 And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt.

31 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.

32 And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.

33 And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes.

34 And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.

Solomon’s Officials

4 Now King Solomon was king over all Israel. 2 These were his officials: Azariah the son of Zadok was ( A ) the priest; 3 Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha were scribes; ( B ) Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the secretary; 4 and ( C ) Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the army; and Zadok and ( D ) Abiathar were priests; 5 and Azariah the son of Nathan was over ( E ) the deputies; and Zabud the son of Nathan, a priest, was the king’s confidant; 6 and Ahishar was over the household; and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the forced labor.

7 Solomon had twelve deputies over all Israel, who provided food for the king and his household; each deputy had to provide food for a month in the year. 8 And these were their names: Ben-hur, in the ( F ) hill country of Ephraim; 9 Ben-deker in Makaz and ( G ) Shaalbim, and ( H ) Beth-shemesh, and Elonbeth-hanan; 10 Ben-hesed in Arubboth ( ( I ) Socoh was his and all the land of ( J ) Hepher); 11 Ben-abinadab in all [ a ] the ( K ) hills of Dor (Taphath the daughter of Solomon was his wife); 12 Baana the son of Ahilud in ( L ) Taanach and Megiddo, and all ( M ) Beth-shean which is beside ( N ) Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth-shean to ( O ) Abel-meholah as far as the other side of ( P ) Jokmeam; 13 Ben-geber in ( Q ) Ramoth-gilead ( ( R ) the villages of Jair, the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead were his: ( S ) the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars were his); 14 Ahinadab the son of Iddo in ( T ) Mahanaim; 15 ( U ) Ahimaaz in Naphtali (he also married Basemath the daughter of Solomon); 16 Baana the son of ( V ) Hushai in Asher and [ b ] Bealoth; 17 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah in Issachar; 18 ( W ) Shimei the son of Ela in Benjamin; 19 Geber the son of Uri in the land of Gilead, ( X ) the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only deputy who was in the land.

Solomon’s Power, Wealth, and Wisdom

20 ( Y ) Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand that is on the [ c ] seashore in abundance; they were eating, drinking, and rejoicing.

21 [ d ] ( Z ) Now Solomon was ruling over all the kingdoms ( AA ) from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; ( AB ) they brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.

22 Solomon’s [ e ] provision for one day was [ f ] thirty kors of fine flour and [ g ] sixty kors of meal, 23 ten fat oxen, twenty [ h ] pasture-fed oxen, and a hundred sheep, besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened geese. 24 For he was ruling over everything [ i ] west of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah even to ( AC ) Gaza, ( AD ) over all the kings [ j ] west of the River; and ( AE ) he had peace on all sides surrounding him. 25 ( AF ) So Judah and Israel lived securely, everyone under his vine and his fig tree, ( AG ) from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon. 26 ( AH ) Solomon had [ k ] forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. 27 And those deputies provided food for King Solomon and all who came to King Solomon’s table, each in his month; they allowed nothing to be lacking. 28 They also brought barley and straw for the war horses and ( AI ) baggage horses to the place where it was required , each deputy according to his duty.

29 Now ( AJ ) God gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of [ l ] mind, ( AK ) like the sand that is on the seashore. 30 Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all ( AL ) the [ m ] people of the east and ( AM ) all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 For ( AN ) he was wiser than all other people, more than ( AO ) Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman, ( AP ) Calcol, and [ n ] Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his [ o ] fame was known in all the surrounding nations. 32 ( AQ ) He also told three thousand proverbs, and his songs numbered 1,005. 33 He told of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon even to the hyssop that grows on the wall; he told also of animals, birds, crawling things, and fish. 34 People ( AR ) came from all the [ p ] nations to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.

Solomon’s Daily Provisions

20 The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand ( AD ) on the seashore; they ate, they drank and they were happy. ( AE ) 21 And Solomon ruled ( AF ) over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River ( AG ) to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. ( AH ) These countries brought tribute ( AI ) and were Solomon’s subjects all his life.

22 Solomon’s daily provisions ( AJ ) were thirty cors [ a ] of the finest flour and sixty cors [ b ] of meal, 23 ten head of stall-fed cattle, twenty of pasture-fed cattle and a hundred sheep and goats, as well as deer, gazelles, roebucks and choice fowl. ( AK ) 24 For he ruled over all the kingdoms west of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah ( AL ) to Gaza, and had peace ( AM ) on all sides. 25 During Solomon’s lifetime Judah and Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, ( AN ) lived in safety, ( AO ) everyone under their own vine and under their own fig tree. ( AP )

26 Solomon had four [ c ] thousand stalls for chariot horses, ( AQ ) and twelve thousand horses. [ d ]

27 The district governors, ( AR ) each in his month, supplied provisions for King Solomon and all who came to the king’s table. They saw to it that nothing was lacking. 28 They also brought to the proper place their quotas of barley and straw for the chariot horses and the other horses.

Solomon’s Wisdom

29 God gave Solomon wisdom ( AS ) and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand ( AT ) on the seashore. 30 Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, ( AU ) and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. ( AV ) 31 He was wiser ( AW ) than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite—wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. 32 He spoke three thousand proverbs ( AX ) and his songs ( AY ) numbered a thousand and five. 33 He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop ( AZ ) that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. 34 From all nations people came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings ( BA ) of the world, who had heard of his wisdom. [ e ]
