1 chronicles 29

Gifts to help build the temple

29 Then King David spoke to all the people who were meeting together. He said, ‘God has clearly chosen my son Solomon to do this great work. But he is still young and he has no special skills. It is a very important work for him to build the temple. It will not be a palace for people, but for the Lord God himself! 2 I have tried to provide the things that he will need to build the temple for my God. They include gold, silver, bronze, iron and wood to make things. I have also given many valuable stones, including onyx, antimony and other jewels, as well as a lot of marble. [ a ] 3 I want very much to build a beautiful temple for my God. So I have added my own gold and silver to help to build it. I have added that to the other things that I have provided for God's holy temple. 4 I have given 110 tons of the best gold and 260 tons of pure silver to cover the walls of the buildings. 5 Workers with special skills can also use that gold and silver to make beautiful things. So now, who else will make a gift today to serve the Lord ?’

6 Then the Israelite leaders and officers agreed to offer gifts to help the Lord 's work. They included the leaders of clans and the leaders of Israel's tribes, the army officers who led 1,000 men and who led 100 men, and the officers with authority for the king's work. 7 They gave these gifts for God's temple:

190 tons of gold.

10,000 gold coins.

380 tons of silver.

675 tons of bronze.

3,750 tons of iron.

8 People who had valuable stones gave them for the Lord 's house. Jehiel from Gershon's clan stored them in a safe place. 9 The people were very happy that their leaders gave these things. They were pleased to give to help the Lord 's work. King David was also very happy.

David praises the Lord

10 David praised the Lord in front of all the people who had met together. He said,

‘We praise you Lord ,
the God of our ancestor, Israel. [ b ]
You deserve that people praise you for ever!
11 Lord , you are great, powerful and beautiful!
You rule as king over everything in heaven and on earth.
Yes, Lord , everything belongs in your kingdom!
12 You are the one who gives people riches and honour.
You rule over everything.
You have great strength and power,
so you are able to make people strong and famous.
13 So we thank you, our God.
We praise your great name!

14 But I and my people are like nothing. How are we able to give all these gifts to help your work? Everything that we have comes from you. So we are giving back to you things that already belong to you. 15 We are like strangers and foreign people who live in your world. Our ancestors also lived in that way. We live here only for a short time and then we disappear, like a shadow. We know that we will die one day. 16 Lord , our God, we have given these things to build a temple for you, to give honour to your holy name. But all these valuable things come from you. They already belong to you. 17 My God, I know that you look carefully at our thoughts. You are pleased when we want to do things that are right. And I really do want to offer all these things to you. I know that your people who have met together here are happy. I can see that they are pleased to give these things to you. 18 Lord , you are the God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Israel. Please help us, your people, to continue to obey you. Help us to serve you faithfully. 19 Please help my son Solomon to want to obey you. Help him to obey all your commands, rules and laws. Help him to work well to build your temple. I have prepared the things that he will need to do that.’

20 Then David spoke to all the people who were meeting there together. He told them, ‘Now praise the Lord , your God!’ So all the people praised the Lord , the God of their ancestors. They bent down low to worship the Lord . They gave honour to the Lord and also to the king.

Solomon becomes king

21 On the next day, they offered sacrifices to the Lord . They made burnt offerings of 1,000 bulls, 1,000 male sheep and 1,000 lambs. They made the proper drink offerings with those sacrifices. They also offered many other sacrifices on behalf of all the Israelites.

22 They ate a big feast to give honour to the Lord and they were very happy.

Then they anointed David's son Solomon to be the next king, with the Lord 's blessing. That was the second time that they had chosen him as their king. [ c ] They also anointed Zadok to be priest. 23 So Solomon sat on the Lord 's throne as king, in his father David's place. Everything went well for him as king. All the people in Israel obeyed him. 24 All King David's officers, his brave soldiers and all of his sons promised to serve King Solomon faithfully.

25 The Lord caused all the people in Israel to respect Solomon as a great king. They gave him much honour, more than any king that had ruled Israel before him.

David dies

26 Jesse's son David had ruled over all Israel as king. 27 He had ruled Israel for 40 years. He ruled for seven years in Hebron. Then he ruled for 33 years in Jerusalem. 28 He was an old man when he died. During his long life, God gave him riches as well as honour. Then David's son Solomon became king instead of him.

29 The prophets Samuel, Nathan and Gad wrote history books about all the things that King David did. They wrote down everything that he did as king, from the beginning to the end. 30 The books tell us how he ruled with great power. They tell us about the things that happened to him. They also tell us about the things that happened in Israel and in the other kingdoms in that region.

Footnotes

  1. 29:2 Onyx and antimony were valuable stones. Marble was a very hard stone that was good for building and looked beautiful.
  2. 29:10 ‘Israel’ was the special name that God gave to Jacob.
  3. 29:22 David had already said that Solomon would be the next king. See 1 Chronicles 23:1 .

Gifts for Building the Temple

29 King David said to all the Israelites who were gathered together, “God chose my son Solomon. Solomon is young and does not know all that he needs to do this work. But the work is very important. This house is not for people; this house is for the Lord God. 2 I have done my best to provide what is needed for the building of my God’s Temple. I have given gold for the things made of gold. I have given silver for the things made of silver. I have given bronze for the things made of bronze. I have given iron for the things made of iron. I have given wood for the things made of wood. I have also given onyx stones for the settings, [ a ] mosaic tiles, [ b ] all kinds of valuable stones in many different colors, and white marble stones. 3 I am making a special gift of gold and silver things for my God’s Temple. I am doing this because I really want the Temple of my God to be built. I am giving all these things to build this holy Temple. 4 I have given 110 tons [ c ] of pure gold from Ophir. I have given 263 tons [ d ] of pure silver. The silver is for covering the walls of the buildings in the Temple. 5 I have given gold and silver for all the things made of gold and silver. I have given gold and silver so that skilled men can make all different kinds of things for the Temple. Now, how many of you Israelites are ready to give yourselves to the Lord today?”

6 The family leaders, the leaders of the tribes of Israel, the generals, the captains, and the officials responsible for the king’s work, were all ready and gave their valuable things. 7 These are the things they gave for God’s house: 190 tons [ e ] of gold; 375 tons [ f ] of silver; 675 tons [ g ] of bronze; and 3750 tons [ h ] of iron. 8 People who had valuable stones gave them to the Lord ’s Temple. Jehiel took care of the valuable stones. He was from the Gershon family. 9 The people were very happy because their leaders were willing to give so much. The leaders had given freely to the Lord from good hearts. King David was also very happy.

David’s Beautiful Prayer

10 Then David praised the Lord in front of all the people who were gathered together. David said,

Lord , the God of Israel, our Father,
may you be praised forever and ever!
11 Greatness, power, glory, victory, and honor belong to you,
because everything in heaven and on earth belongs to you!
The kingdom belongs to you, Lord !
You are the head, the Ruler over everything.
12 Riches and honor come from you.
You rule everything.
You have the power and strength in your hand!
And in your hand is the power to make anyone great and powerful!
13 Now, our God, we thank you,
and we praise your glorious name!
14 All these things didn’t come from me and my people.
All these things come from you.
We are only giving back to you things that came from you.
15 We are only strangers traveling through this world
like our ancestors.
Our time on earth is like a passing shadow,
and we cannot stop it.
16 Lord our God, we gathered all these things to build your Temple.
We build it to honor your name.
But all these things have come from you.
Everything belongs to you.
17 My God, I know that you test people,
and that you are happy when people do what is right.
I gladly give you all these things
with a pure, honest heart.
I see your people gathered here,
and I see that they are happy about giving these things to you.
18 Lord , you are the God of our ancestors,
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Please help your people plan the right things.
Help them be loyal and true to you.
19 And help my son Solomon be true to you.
Help him always obey your commands, laws, and rules.
Help Solomon do these things.
And help him build this Temple that I have planned.”

20 Then David said to all the group of people gathered together, “Now give praise to the Lord your God.” So all the people gave praise to the Lord God, the God their ancestors worshiped. They bowed to the ground to give honor to the Lord and to the king.

Solomon Becomes King

21 The next day the people offered sacrifices and burnt offerings to the Lord —1000 bulls, 1000 rams, 1000 lambs, and the drink offerings that go with them. They offered these and many other sacrifices to the Lord for all the Israelites. 22 That day the people were very happy as they ate and drank there together with the Lord .

And they made David’s son Solomon king the second time. [ i ] They anointed Solomon to be king, and they anointed Zadok to be priest. They did this in the place where the Lord was.

23 Then Solomon sat on the Lord ’s throne as king. Solomon took his father’s place. He was very successful. All the Israelites obeyed him. 24 All the leaders, soldiers, and all of King David’s sons accepted Solomon as king and obeyed him. 25 The Lord made Solomon very great. All the Israelites knew that the Lord was making him great. He gave Solomon the honor that a king should have. No king in Israel before Solomon had such honor.

David’s Death

26-27 David son of Jesse was king over all Israel for 40 years. He was king in the city of Hebron for seven years. Then he was king in the city of Jerusalem for 33 years. 28 David died when he was old. He had lived a good, long life and had many riches and honors. His son Solomon became the new king after him.

29 The things that King David did, from beginning to end, are in the books written by Samuel the seer, Nathan the prophet, and Gad the seer. 30 Those writings tell all about what David did as king of Israel. They tell about David’s power and what happened to him and to Israel and to all the kingdoms around them.

29 Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God.

2 Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance.

3 Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house.

4 Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal:

5 The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord ?

6 Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king's work, offered willingly,

7 And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron.

8 And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the Lord , by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite.

9 Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord : and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

10 Wherefore David blessed the Lord before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.

11 Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord , and thou art exalted as head above all.

12 Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.

13 Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.

14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.

15 For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.

16 O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own.

17 I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.

18 O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee:

19 And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision.

20 And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the Lord your God. And all the congregation blessed the Lord God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the Lord , and the king.

21 And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the Lord , and offered burnt offerings unto the Lord , on the morrow after that day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel:

22 And did eat and drink before the Lord on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed him unto the Lord to be the chief governor, and Zadok to be priest.

23 Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him.

24 And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king.

25 And the Lord magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

26 Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.

27 And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.

28 And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.

29 Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,

30 With all his reign and his might, and the times that went over him, and over Israel, and over all the kingdoms of the countries.

Offerings for the Temple

29 Then King David said to the entire assembly, “My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, ( A ) is still young and inexperienced, and the work is great; for ( B ) the [ a ] temple is not for mankind, but for the Lord God. 2 Now ( C ) with all my ability I have provided for the house of my God the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, wood for the things of wood, onyx stones and inlaid stones , stones of antimony and stones of various colors, and all kinds of precious stones and alabaster in abundance. 3 In addition, in my delight in the house of my God, the treasure I have of gold and silver, I give to the house of my God, over and above all that I have already provided for the holy [ b ] temple, 4 namely , ( D ) three thousand [ c ] talents of gold, from ( E ) the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the [ d ] buildings; 5 gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver, that is, for all the work [ e ] done by the craftsmen. Who then is willing [ f ] to consecrate himself this day to the Lord ?”

6 Then ( F ) the rulers of the fathers’ households , the leaders of the tribes of Israel, and the commanders of thousands and hundreds, with ( G ) the supervisors of the king’s work, offered willingly; 7 and for the service of the house of God they gave five thousand talents and ten thousand [ g ] ( H ) darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of brass, and a hundred thousand talents of iron. 8 [ h ] Whoever possessed precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord , [ i ] in care of ( I ) Jehiel the Gershonite. 9 Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the Lord ( J ) wholeheartedly, and King David also rejoiced greatly.

David’s Prayer

10 So David blessed the Lord in the sight of all the assembly; and David said, “Blessed are You, Lord God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 ( K ) Yours, Lord , is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and on the earth; Yours is the dominion, Lord , and You exalt Yourself as head over all. 12 ( L ) Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and ( M ) in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone. 13 Now therefore, our God, we thank You, and praise Your glorious name.

14 “But who am I and who are my people that we should [ j ] be able to offer as generously as this? For all things come from You, and from Your hand we have given to You. 15 For ( N ) we are strangers before You, and temporary residents, as all our fathers were; ( O ) our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope. 16 Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided to build You a house for Your holy name, it is from Your hand, and everything is Yours. 17 Since I know, my God, that ( P ) You put the heart to the test and ( Q ) delight in uprightness, I, in the integrity of my heart, have willingly offered all these things ; so now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here, make their offerings willingly to You. 18 Lord , God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep this forever in the [ k ] intentions of the hearts of Your people, and direct their hearts to You; 19 and ( R ) give my son Solomon a perfect heart to keep Your commandments, Your testimonies, and Your statutes, and to do them all, and ( S ) to build the [ l ] temple for which I have made provision.”

20 Then David said to all the assembly, “Now bless the Lord your God.” And ( T ) all the assembly blessed the Lord , the God of their fathers, and ( U ) bowed down and paid [ m ] homage to the Lord and the king.

Sacrifices

21 On the next day ( V ) they [ n ] made sacrifices to the Lord and offered burnt offerings to the Lord , a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. 22 So they ate and drank that day before the Lord with great gladness.

Solomon Again Made King

And they made Solomon the son of David king ( W ) a second time, and they ( X ) anointed him as ruler for the Lord and Zadok as priest. 23 Then ( Y ) Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of his father David; and he prospered, and all Israel obeyed him. 24 And all the officials, the mighty men, and also all the sons of King David [ o ] pledged allegiance to King Solomon. 25 ( Z ) The Lord highly honored Solomon in the sight of all Israel, and ( AA ) bestowed on him royal majesty which had not been bestowed on any king before him in Israel.

26 Now ( AB ) David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. 27 ( AC ) The period which he reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned in Hebron seven years and [ p ] in Jerusalem thirty-three years .

Death of David

28 Then he died at ( AD ) a good old age, ( AE ) full of days, riches, and honor; and his son Solomon reigned in his place. 29 Now the acts of King David, from the first to the last, are written in the chronicles of ( AF ) Samuel the seer, in the chronicles of ( AG ) Nathan the prophet, and in the chronicles of ( AH ) Gad the seer, 30 with all of his reign, his power, and the circumstances which came upon him, Israel, and all the kingdoms of the lands.

Gifts for Building the Temple

29 Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. ( A ) The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God. 2 With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold ( B ) for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise, [ a ] ( C ) stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities. ( D ) 3 Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided ( E ) for this holy temple: 4 three thousand talents [ b ] of gold (gold of Ophir) ( F ) and seven thousand talents [ c ] of refined silver, ( G ) for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings, 5 for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today?”

6 Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials ( H ) in charge of the king’s work gave willingly. ( I ) 7 They ( J ) gave toward the work on the temple of God five thousand talents [ d ] and ten thousand darics [ e ] of gold, ten thousand talents [ f ] of silver, eighteen thousand talents [ g ] of bronze and a hundred thousand talents [ h ] of iron. 8 Anyone who had precious stones ( K ) gave them to the treasury of the temple of the Lord in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite. ( L ) 9 The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly ( M ) to the Lord . David the king also rejoiced greatly.

David’s Prayer

10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

“Praise be to you, Lord ,
the God of our father Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
11 Yours, Lord , is the greatness and the power ( N )
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours. ( O )
Yours, Lord , is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all. ( P )
12 Wealth and honor ( Q ) come from you;
you are the ruler ( R ) of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.
13 Now, our God, we give you thanks,
and praise your glorious name.

14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? ( S ) Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. ( T ) 15 We are foreigners and strangers ( U ) in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, ( V ) without hope. 16 Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart ( W ) and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you. ( X ) 18 Lord , the God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep these desires and thoughts in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you. 19 And give my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion ( Y ) to keep your commands, statutes and decrees ( Z ) and to do everything to build the palatial structure for which I have provided.” ( AA )

20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Praise the Lord your God.” So they all praised the Lord , the God of their fathers; they bowed down, prostrating themselves before the Lord and the king.

Solomon Acknowledged as King ( AB )

21 The next day they made sacrifices to the Lord and presented burnt offerings to him: ( AC ) a thousand bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand male lambs, together with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. ( AD ) 22 They ate and drank with great joy ( AE ) in the presence of the Lord that day.

Then they acknowledged Solomon son of David as king a second time, anointing him before the Lord to be ruler and Zadok ( AF ) to be priest. 23 So Solomon sat ( AG ) on the throne ( AH ) of the Lord as king in place of his father David. He prospered and all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the officers and warriors, as well as all of King David’s sons, ( AI ) pledged their submission to King Solomon.

25 The Lord highly exalted ( AJ ) Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor ( AK ) such as no king over Israel ever had before. ( AL )

The Death of David ( AM )

26 David son of Jesse was king ( AN ) over all Israel. ( AO ) 27 He ruled over Israel forty years—seven in Hebron ( AP ) and thirty-three in Jerusalem. ( AQ ) 28 He died ( AR ) at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king. ( AS )

29 As for the events of King David’s reign, from beginning to end, they are written in the records of Samuel the seer, ( AT ) the records of Nathan ( AU ) the prophet and the records of Gad ( AV ) the seer, 30 together with the details of his reign and power, and the circumstances that surrounded him and Israel and the kingdoms of all the other lands.
