The descendants of Judah

2 The sons of Israel were: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, 2 Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad and Asher. [ a ]

3 Judah's sons were: Er, Onan and Shelah. Their mother was Bath-shua, who was a woman from Canaan. Judah's firstborn son Er did things that the Lord saw were evil. [ b ] So the Lord killed him.

4 Judah had sex with Er's widow, Tamar. She gave birth to two sons for Judah, Perez and Zerah. Judah was the father of five sons.

5 Perez's sons were: Hezron and Hamul.

6 Zerah's five sons were: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol and Dara.

7 Carmi's son was Achar. Achar caused a lot of trouble for Israel. He took for himself things that belonged to God.

8 Ethan's son was Azariah.

9 Hezron's sons were: Jerahmeel, Ram and Caleb. [ c ]

The descendants of Ram

10 Ram became the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon. Nahshon was the leader of Judah's tribe. 11 Nahshon became the father of Salma. Salma became the father of Boaz. [ d ] 12 Boaz became the father of Obed. Obed became the father of Jesse.

13 Jesse's firstborn son was Eliab. His second son was Abinadab, and his third son was Shimea. 14 His fourth son was Nethanel and his fifth son was Raddai. 15 His sixth son was Ozem and his seventh son was David. 16 Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah's three sons were Abishai, Joab and Asahel. 17 Abigail gave birth to Amasa. Amasa's father was Jether, a descendant of Ishmael. [ e ]

The descendants of Caleb

18 Hezron's son Caleb married Azubah, who was also called Jerioth. [ f ] Her sons were Jesher, Shobab and Ardon. 19 When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath. She gave birth to a son called Hur. 20 Hur became the father of Uri. Uri became the father of Bezalel.

21 After some time, when Hezron was 60 years old, he married Makir's daughter. She was Gilead's sister. Hezron had sex with her and she gave birth to a son called Segub.

22 Segub became the father of Jair. Jair ruled 23 towns in the region of Gilead. 23 But later Geshur and Aram attacked Jair's towns and took them for themselves. They also took Kenath and the 60 small towns around it.

All those people were descendants of Gilead's father, Makir.

24 After Hezron died, Caleb married his father's widow, Ephrathah. She gave birth to a son for him. His name was Ashhur, and he became the father of Tekoa.

The descendants of Jerahmeel

25 Hezron's firstborn son was Jerahmeel. Jerahmeel's sons were: Ram (his firstborn son), Bunah, Oren, Ozem and Ahijah. 26 Jerahmeel had another wife, called Atarah. She gave birth to Onam.

27 The sons of Jerahmeel's firstborn son, Ram, were: Maaz, Jamin and Eker.

28 Onam's sons were: Shammai and Jada.

Shammai's sons were: Nadab and Abishur.

29 Abishur's wife was called Abihail. She gave birth to Ahban and Molid.

30 Nadab's sons were: Seled and Appaim. When Seled died, he had no sons.

31 Appaim's son was Ishi. Ishi's son was Sheshan. Sheshan's son was Ahlai.

32 The sons of Jada, Shammai's brother, were: Jether and Jonathan. When Jether died, he had no sons.

33 Jonathan's sons were: Peleth and Zaza.

All those men were Jerahmeel's descendants.

34 Sheshan did not have any sons but he did have daughters. He had a servant from Egypt called Jarha. 35 Sheshan gave his daughter to his servant Jarha, to be his wife. She gave birth to a son for him, called Attai.

36 Attai became the father of Nathan. Nathan became the father of Zabad. 37 Zabad became the father of Ephlal. Ephlal became the father of Obed. 38 Obed became the father of Jehu. Jehu became the father of Azariah. 39 Azariah became the father of Helez. Helez became the father of Eleasah. 40 Eleasah became the father of Sismai. Sismai became the father of Shallum. 41 Shallum became the father of Jekamiah. Jekamiah became the father of Elishama.

More descendants of Caleb

42 The sons of Jerahmeel's brother, Caleb, were: Mesha, his firstborn son. Mesha became the father of Ziph. His son Mareshah became the father of Hebron.

43 Hebron's sons were: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem and Shema. 44 Shema became the father of Raham, who became the father of Jorkeam. Rekem became the father of Shammai. 45 Shammai's son was Maon, who became the father of Beth-Zur.

46 Caleb had a slave wife called Ephah. She gave birth to Haran, Moza and Gazez. Haran became the father of Gazez.

47 Jahdai's sons were: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah and Shaaph.

48 Caleb's other slave wife Maakah gave birth to Sheber, Tirhanah, 49 Shaaph and Sheva. Shaaph became the father of Madmannah. Sheva became the father of Makbenah and Gibea. Caleb had a daughter called Aksah.

50-51 Those people were Caleb's descendants.

The sons of Ephrath's firstborn son, Hur, were: Shobal, Salma and Hareph. Shobal became the ancestor of Kiriath-Jearim. Salma became the ancestor of Bethlehem. Hareph became the ancestor of Beth-Gader.

52 The sons of Shobal, the ancestor of Kiriath-Jearim, were: Haroeh, half the Manahath people 53 and the clans of Kiriath-Jearim: the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites and Mishraites. The Zorathites and Eshtaolites were descendants of these clans.

54 Salma's descendants were: the people of Bethlehem, the people of Netophath, the clan of Atroth-Beth-Joab, half the Manahath people and the Zorites. 55 His descendants also included the people who lived in Jabez. They were people who could write down important things. Their clans were called the Tirathites, Shimeathites and Sucathites. These clans were descendants of Hammath, the Kenite man. He was also the ancestor of the Rekabites.

  1. 2:2 Israel was the name that God gave to Jacob. Jacob's 12 sons became the ancestors of the 12 tribes of Israel.
  2. 2:3 When we write Lord like this, it is a special name for God. Sometimes people write it as ‘Yahweh’, or as ‘Jehovah’. It is his own name that he told Moses. See Exodus 3:14 . It means ‘I am who I am’. This shows that God has always been there and he always will be there.
  3. 2:9 ‘Caleb’ or ‘Chelubai’.
  4. 2:11 Boaz married Ruth. You can read more about her in the Book of Ruth.
  5. 2:17 In these family lists, ‘son’ can mean ‘descendant’.
  6. 2:18 This Caleb is not the same as the man who was Moses' helper.

Israel’s Sons

2 Israel’s sons were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, 2 Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Judah’s Sons

3 Judah’s sons were Er, Onan, and Shelah. Bathshua [ a ] from Canaan was their mother. The Lord killed Er, the first son, because he saw that he was evil. 4 Judah’s daughter-in-law Tamar gave birth to Perez and Zerah. [ b ] So Judah had five sons.

5 Perez’s sons were Hezron and Hamul.

6 Zerah had five sons. They were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda.

7 Zimri’s son was Carmi. Carmi’s son was Achar. [ c ] Achar was the man who brought many troubles to Israel. Achar kept the things he took in battle, but he was supposed to give them all to God.

8 Ethan’s son was Azariah.

9 Hezron’s sons were Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb. [ d ]

Ram’s Descendants

10 Ram was Amminadab’s father, and Amminadab was Nahshon’s father. Nahshon was the leader of the people of Judah. [ e ] 11 Nahshon was Salmon’s father. Salmon was Boaz’s father. 12 Boaz was Obed’s father. Obed was Jesse’s father. 13 Jesse was Eliab’s father. Eliab was Jesse’s first son. Jesse’s second son was Abinadab. His third son was Shimea. 14 Nethanel was Jesse’s fourth son. Jesse’s fifth son was Raddai. 15 Ozem was Jesse’s sixth son, and David was his seventh son. 16 Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah’s three sons were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. 17 Abigail was Amasa’s mother. Amasa’s father was Jether. Jether was from the Ishmaelites.

Caleb’s Descendants

18 Caleb was Hezron’s son. Caleb had children with his wife Azubah. Azubah was the daughter of Jerioth. [ f ] Azubah’s sons were Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19 When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath. Caleb and Ephrath had a son. They named him Hur. 20 Hur was Uri’s father. Uri was Bezalel’s father.

21 Later when Hezron was 60 years old, he married Makir’s daughter. Makir was the father of Gilead. Hezron had sexual relations with Makir’s daughter, and she gave birth to Segub. 22 Segub was Jair’s father. Jair had 23 cities in the country of Gilead. 23 But Geshur and Aram took Jair’s villages. Among them were Kenath and the small towns around it. There were 60 small towns in all. All these towns belonged to the sons of Makir, the father of Gilead.

24 After Hezron died in the town of Caleb Ephrathah, his wife Abijah had his son, who was named Ashhur. Ashhur was the father of Tekoa.

Jerahmeel’s Descendants

25 Jerahmeel was Hezron’s first son. Jerahmeel’s sons were Ram, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. Ram was Jerahmeel’s first son. 26 Jerahmeel had another wife named Atarah. Onam’s mother was Atarah.

27 Jerahmeel’s first son, Ram, had sons. They were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.

28 Onam’s sons were Shammai and Jada. Shammai’s sons were Nadab and Abishur.

29 Abishur’s wife was named Abihail. They had two sons. Their names were Ahban and Molid.

30 Nadab’s sons were Seled and Appaim. Seled died without having children.

31 Appaim’s son was Ishi. Ishi’s son was Sheshan. Sheshan’s son was Ahlai.

32 Jada was Shammai’s brother. Jada’s sons were Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without having children.

33 Jonathan’s sons were Peleth and Zaza. This was the list of Jerahmeel’s children.

34 Sheshan did not have sons. He only had daughters. Sheshan had a servant from Egypt named Jarha. 35 Sheshan let his daughter marry Jarha. They had a son. His name was Attai.

36 Attai was Nathan’s father. Nathan was Zabad’s father. 37 Zabad was Ephlal’s father. Ephlal was Obed’s father. 38 Obed was Jehu’s father. Jehu was Azariah’s father. 39 Azariah was Helez’s father. Helez was Eleasah’s father. 40 Eleasah was Sismai’s father. Sismai was Shallum’s father. 41 Shallum was Jekamiah’s father, and Jekamiah was Elishama’s father.

Other Descendants of Caleb

42 Caleb was Jerahmeel’s brother. Caleb had some sons. His first son was Mesha. Mesha was Ziph’s father. There was also Caleb’s son Mareshah. Mareshah was the father of Hebron.

43 Hebron’s sons were Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. 44 Shema was Raham’s father. Raham was Jorkeam’s father. Rekem was Shammai’s father. 45 Shammai’s son was Maon. Maon was Beth Zur’s father.

46 Caleb’s slave woman was named Ephah. Ephah was the mother of Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran was Gazez’s father.

47 Jahdai’s sons were Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph.

48 Maacah was another slave woman of Caleb. Maacah was the mother of Sheber and Tirhanah. 49 Maacah was also the mother of Shaaph and Sheva. Shaaph was Madmannah’s father. Sheva was the father of Macbenah and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Acsah.

50 This is a list of Caleb’s descendants: Hur was Caleb’s first son. He was born to Ephrathah. Hur’s sons were Shobal, the founder [ g ] of Kiriath Jearim, 51 Salma, the founder of Bethlehem, and Hareph, the founder of Beth Gader.

52 Shobal was the founder of Kiriath Jearim. This is a list of Shobal’s descendants: Haroeh, half the people in Manahti, 53 and the tribes from Kiriath Jearim. These are the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites, and Mishraites. The Zorathites and the Eshtaolites came from the Mishraites.

54 This is a list of Salma’s descendants: the people from Bethlehem, Netophah, Atroth Beth Joab, half the people from Manahti, the Zorites, 55 and the families of scribes who lived at Jabez, Tirath, Shimeath, and Sucah. These scribes are the Kenites who came from Hammath. Hammath was the founder of Beth Recab.

14 Nethaneel the fourth, Raddai the fifth,

15 Ozem the sixth, David the seventh:

16 Whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah; Abishai, and Joab, and Asahel, three.

17 And Abigail bare Amasa: and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmeelite.

18 And Caleb the son of Hezron begat children of Azubah his wife, and of Jerioth: her sons are these; Jesher, and Shobab, and Ardon.

19 And when Azubah was dead, Caleb took unto him Ephrath, which bare him Hur.

20 And Hur begat Uri, and Uri begat Bezaleel.

21 And afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was threescore years old; and she bare him Segub.

22 And Segub begat Jair, who had three and twenty cities in the land of Gilead.

23 And he took Geshur, and Aram, with the towns of Jair, from them, with Kenath, and the towns thereof, even threescore cities. All these belonged to the sons of Machir the father of Gilead.

24 And after that Hezron was dead in Calebephratah, then Abiah Hezron's wife bare him Ashur the father of Tekoa.

25 And the sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron were, Ram the firstborn, and Bunah, and Oren, and Ozem, and Ahijah.

26 Jerahmeel had also another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam.

27 And the sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel were, Maaz, and Jamin, and Eker.

28 And the sons of Onam were, Shammai, and Jada. And the sons of Shammai; Nadab and Abishur.

29 And the name of the wife of Abishur was Abihail, and she bare him Ahban, and Molid.

30 And the sons of Nadab; Seled, and Appaim: but Seled died without children.

31 And the sons of Appaim; Ishi. And the sons of Ishi; Sheshan. And the children of Sheshan; Ahlai.

32 And the sons of Jada the brother of Shammai; Jether, and Jonathan: and Jether died without children.

33 And the sons of Jonathan; Peleth, and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmeel.

34 Now Sheshan had no sons, but daughters. And Sheshan had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Jarha.

35 And Sheshan gave his daughter to Jarha his servant to wife; and she bare him Attai.

44 And Shema begat Raham, the father of Jorkoam: and Rekem begat Shammai.

45 And the son of Shammai was Maon: and Maon was the father of Bethzur.

46 And Ephah, Caleb's concubine, bare Haran, and Moza, and Gazez: and Haran begat Gazez.

47 And the sons of Jahdai; Regem, and Jotham, and Gesham, and Pelet, and Ephah, and Shaaph.

48 Maachah, Caleb's concubine, bare Sheber, and Tirhanah.

49 She bare also Shaaph the father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbenah, and the father of Gibea: and the daughter of Caleb was Achsa.

50 These were the sons of Caleb the son of Hur, the firstborn of Ephratah; Shobal the father of Kirjathjearim.

51 Salma the father of Bethlehem, Hareph the father of Bethgader.

52 And Shobal the father of Kirjathjearim had sons; Haroeh, and half of the Manahethites.

53 And the families of Kirjathjearim; the Ithrites, and the Puhites, and the Shumathites, and the Mishraites; of them came the Zareathites, and the Eshtaulites,

54 The sons of Salma; Bethlehem, and the Netophathites, Ataroth, the house of Joab, and half of the Manahethites, the Zorites.

55 And the families of the scribes which dwelt at Jabez; the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and Suchathites. These are the Kenites that came of Hemath, the father of the house of Rechab.

Genealogy: Twelve Sons of Israel (Jacob)

2 ( A ) These were the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, 2 Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

3 ( B ) The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, and Shelah; these three were born to him by Bath-shua the Canaanitess. But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was evil in the sight of the Lord , so He put him to death. 4 ( C ) His daughter-in-law Tamar bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.

5 The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 6 The sons of Zerah were [ a ] Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and [ b ] Dara; five of them in all. 7 The [ c ] son of Carmi was [ d ] ( D ) Achar, the one who brought disaster on Israel [ e ] by violating the [ f ] ban. 8 The [ g ] son of Ethan was Azariah.

9 Now the sons of Hezron who were born to him were Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai. 10 Ram fathered Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, leader of the sons of Judah; 11 Nahshon fathered Salma, Salma fathered Boaz, 12 Boaz fathered Obed, and Obed fathered Jesse; 13 and Jesse fathered Eliab his firstborn, then Abinadab, the second, [ h ] Shimea, the third, 14 Nethanel, the fourth, Raddai, the fifth, 15 Ozem, the sixth, and David, the seventh. 16 Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. And the three sons of Zeruiah were [ i ] Abshai, Joab, and Asahel. 17 Abigail gave birth to Amasa, and the father of Amasa was [ j ] Jether the Ishmaelite.

18 Now Caleb the son of Hezron had sons by Azubah his wife, and by Jerioth; and these were her sons: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19 When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, who bore to him Hur. 20 Hur fathered Uri, and Uri fathered Bezalel.

21 Later, Hezron had relations with the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was sixty years old; and she bore to him Segub. 22 Segub fathered Jair, who had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. 23 But Geshur and Aram took [ k ] the villages of Jair from them, with Kenath and its villages, sixty settlements. All of these were the sons of Machir, the father of Gilead. 24 After the death of Hezron in Caleb-ephrathah, Abijah, Hezron’s wife, bore to him Ashhur the father of Tekoa.

25 Now the sons of Jerahmeel, the firstborn of Hezron, were Ram the firstborn, then Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. 26 Jerahmeel had another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam. 27 The sons of Ram, the firstborn of Jerahmeel, were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker. 28 The sons of Onam were Shammai and Jada. And the sons of Shammai were Nadab and Abishur. 29 The name of Abishur’s wife was Abihail, and she bore to him Ahban and Molid. 30 The sons of Nadab were Seled and Appaim, and Seled died without sons. 31 The [ l ] son of Appaim was Ishi. And the [ m ] son of Ishi was Sheshan, and the [ n ] son of Sheshan, Ahlai. 32 The sons of Jada the brother of Shammai were Jether and Jonathan, and Jether died without sons. 33 The sons of Jonathan were Peleth and Zaza. These were the [ o ] descendants of Jerahmeel. 34 Now Sheshan had no sons, only daughters. The [ q ] sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah, were Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim, 51 Salma the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph the father of Beth-gader. 52 Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim had sons: Haroeh, half of the Manahathites, 53 and the families of Kiriath-jearim: the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites; from these came the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites. 54 The sons of Salma were Bethlehem and the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab, and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites. 55 The families of scribes who lived at Jabez were the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sucathites. Those are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab.

Hezron ( K ) and Hamul.

6 The sons of Zerah:

Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalkol and Darda [ a ] —five in all.

7 The son of Karmi:

Achar, [ b ] ( L ) who brought trouble on Israel by violating the ban on taking devoted things. [ c ] ( M )

8 The son of Ethan:

Azariah.

9 The sons born to Hezron ( N ) were:

Jerahmeel, Ram and Caleb. [ d ]

From Ram Son of Hezron

10 Ram ( O ) was the father of

Amminadab ( P ) , and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, ( Q ) the leader of the people of Judah. 11 Nahshon was the father of Salmon, [ e ] Salmon the father of Boaz, 12 Boaz ( R ) the father of Obed and Obed the father of Jesse. ( S )

13 Jesse ( T ) was the father of

Eliab ( U ) his firstborn; the second son was Abinadab, the third Shimea, 14 the fourth Nethanel, the fifth Raddai, 15 the sixth Ozem and the seventh David. 16 Their sisters were Zeruiah ( V ) and Abigail. Zeruiah’s ( W ) three sons were Abishai, Joab ( X ) and Asahel. 17 Abigail was the mother of Amasa, ( Y ) whose father was Jether the Ishmaelite.

Caleb Son of Hezron

18 Caleb son of Hezron had children by his wife Azubah (and by Jerioth). These were her sons: Jesher, Shobab and Ardon. 19 When Azubah died, Caleb ( Z ) married Ephrath, who bore him Hur. 20 Hur was the father of Uri, and Uri the father of Bezalel. ( AA )

21 Later, Hezron, when he was sixty years old, married the daughter of Makir the father of Gilead. ( AB ) He made love to her, and she bore him Segub. 22 Segub was the father of Jair, who controlled twenty-three towns in Gilead. 23 (But Geshur and Aram captured Havvoth Jair, [ f ] ( AC ) as well as Kenath ( AD ) with its surrounding settlements—sixty towns.) All these were descendants of Makir the father of Gilead.

24 After Hezron died in Caleb Ephrathah, Abijah the wife of Hezron bore him Ashhur ( AE ) the father [ g ] of Tekoa.

Jerahmeel Son of Hezron

25 The sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron:

Ram his firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem and [ h ] Ahijah. 26 Jerahmeel had another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam.

27 The sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel:

Maaz, Jamin and Eker.

28 The sons of Onam:

Shammai and Jada.

The sons of Shammai:

Nadab and Abishur.

29 Abishur’s wife was named Abihail, who bore him Ahban and Molid.

30 The sons of Nadab:

Seled and Appaim. Seled died without children.

31 The son of Appaim:

Ishi, who was the father of Sheshan.

Sheshan was the father of Ahlai.

32 The sons of Jada, Shammai’s brother:

Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without children.

33 The sons of Jonathan:

Peleth and Zaza.

These were the descendants of Jerahmeel.

34 Sheshan had no sons—only daughters.

He had an Egyptian servant named Jarha. 35 Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha, and she bore him Attai.

36 Attai was the father of Nathan,

Nathan the father of Zabad, ( AF )

37 Zabad the father of Ephlal,

Ephlal the father of Obed,

38 Obed the father of Jehu,

Jehu the father of Azariah,

39 Azariah the father of Helez,

Helez the father of Eleasah,

42 The sons of Caleb ( AG ) the brother of Jerahmeel:

43 The sons of Hebron:

Korah, Tappuah, Rekem and Shema. 44 Shema was the father of Raham, and Raham the father of Jorkeam. Rekem was the father of Shammai. 45 The son of Shammai was Maon ( AH ) , and Maon was the father of Beth Zur. ( AI )

46 Caleb’s concubine Ephah was the mother of Haran, Moza and Gazez. Haran was the father of Gazez.

47 The sons of Jahdai:

Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah and Shaaph.

48 Caleb’s concubine Maakah was the mother of Sheber and Tirhanah. 49 She also gave birth to Shaaph the father of Madmannah ( AJ ) and to Sheva the father of Makbenah and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Aksah. ( AK ) 50 These were the descendants of Caleb.

54 The descendants of Salma:
