1 chronicles 16

The people worship the Lord

16 David had put up a special tent for God's Covenant Box, so they took it there. They put it in its place inside the tent. Then they offered burnt offerings and friendship offerings to God. 2 After David had offered those sacrifices, he prayed that the Lord would bless the people. 3 Then he gave a gift to every Israelite man and woman. Each person received a loaf of bread, some dates and some raisins.

4 Then David chose some Levites to serve the Lord at the Covenant Box. They would lead prayers and songs to thank the Lord , Israel's God, and to praise him. 5 Asaph was the leader of that group and Zechariah was the second leader. Then there were Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. Those men made music with harps and lyres. Asaph used the cymbals. 6 The priests Benaiah and Jahaziel would make a noise with trumpets in front of God's Covenant Box many times each day.

A song to thank God [ a ]

7 On that day, David first told Asaph and the other Levites to sing this song to thank the Lord :

8 Thank the Lord !
Make his name famous!
Tell people in all the nations what he has done.
9 Sing songs and make music
to praise him!
Tell people about the miracles that he has done.
10 Boast about his holy name.
Everybody who wants to worship the Lord should be very happy!
11 Ask the Lord to help you!
Ask him to give you strength.
Always try to be near him
and worship him.
12 Remember the great things that he has done.
Remember his miracles,
and the commands that he has spoken.
13 You are the descendants of God's servant, Israel.
You are Jacob's descendants,
and God has chosen you to be his people.
14 He is the Lord our God.
He rules the whole earth with justice.
15 Always remember the covenant that he has made with us.
He made that promise to continue for ever.
16 That is the promise that he made to Abraham,
and that he also made to Isaac.
17 He repeated it to Jacob as a law.
It was a covenant with Israel's people
that would continue for ever.
18 He promised, ‘I will give the land of Canaan to you.
It will belong to you and to your descendants.’
19 At one time, God's people were only a few.
They lived in Canaan as strangers.
20 They travelled among different nations
and different kingdoms.
21 But the Lord did not let anyone hurt them.
He punished kings,
to keep his people safe.
22 He said, ‘Do not even touch the people that I have chosen to be mine.
Do not hurt my prophets.’
23 Sing to the Lord , all the world.
Every day, tell people the message that he has rescued us.
24 Tell the other nations that he is very great.
Tell all of them about the great things that he has done.
25 Yes, the Lord is great!
Everyone should praise him, as he deserves.
People should respect him with fear,
more than all other gods.
26 All the other nations' gods are useless idols.
But the Lord made the heavens.
27 We see that he is a very great king.
Strength and joy are in his home.
28 You people of other nations,
recognize that the Lord is great and powerful.
29 Agree that the Lord 's name is great.
Bring a gift to offer to him in his temple.
Worship the Lord ,
who is beautiful and holy.
30 Everyone on earth must shake with fear in front of him.
He has fixed the world in its place,
so that nothing can shake it.
31 The earth and the sky should be happy!
The people of all nations should say,
‘The Lord rules as king!’
32 The sea and everything in it should shout aloud!
The fields and all their crops should shout with joy!
33 Then all the trees in the forests will also sing,
because they are so happy.
They will be happy because the Lord is coming
to judge the earth.
34 Thank the Lord , because he is good.
His faithful love will always be with us.
35 Say to him, ‘God, you are the one who rescues us!
Please save us now!
Bring us safely home from among the other nations.
Then we will thank you!
We will shout aloud to praise your holy name.’
36 Praise the Lord , Israel's God,
as he deserves!
Praise him now and for ever!

Then all the people said, ‘Amen! We agree! Praise the Lord !’

37 King David had chosen Asaph and his relatives to serve the Lord at the Covenant Box. They must do that each day, as the rules said that they should do. 38 They included Obed-Edom and 68 men from his clan. Jeduthun's son, Obed-Edom and Hosah were guards at the entrance of the tent.

39 Zadok and the other priests served the Lord at the tabernacle in Gibeon. That was still the place where the Israelites worshipped God. 40 Their job was to offer burnt offerings as sacrifices to the Lord on the big altar there. They did that every morning and every evening, as the law of the Lord commanded. The Israelites had to obey that law. 41 Heman and Jeduthun were with them at the tabernacle in Gibeon. There were also other Levites that David had chosen to help them. Their special job was to give thanks to the Lord with songs, because his faithful love continues for ever. 42 Heman and Jeduthun also had authority for the trumpets, the cymbals and the other musical instruments. The musicians used them to praise God with their music. Jeduthun's sons stood as guards at the entrance of the tabernacle.

43 After that, all the people left to return to their homes. David also went home to ask God to bless his family.

  1. 16:7 Parts of this song are in Psalms 105 ; 96 ; 106 .

16 The Levites brought God’s Holy Box and put it inside the tent David had set up for it. Then they offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to God. 2 After David had finished giving the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he used the Lord ’s name to bless the people. 3 Then he gave a loaf of bread, some dates, and raisins to every Israelite man and woman.

4 Then David chose some of the Levites to serve before the Lord ’s Holy Box. They had the job of celebrating and giving thanks and praise to the Lord , the God of Israel. 5 Asaph was the leader of the first group. His group played the cymbals. Zechariah was the leader of the second group. The other Levites were Uzziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed Edom, and Jeiel. These men played the lyres and harps. 6 Benaiah and Jahaziel were the priests who always blew the trumpets before the Box of God’s Agreement. 7 This was when David first gave Asaph and his brothers the job of singing praises to the Lord .

David’s Song of Thanks

8 Give thanks to the Lord and call out to him!
Tell the nations what he has done!
9 Sing to him; sing praises to him.
Tell about the amazing things he has done.
10 Be proud of his holy name.
You followers of the Lord , be happy!
11 Depend on the Lord for strength.
Always go to him for help.
12 Remember the amazing things he has done.
Remember his miracles and his fair decisions.
13 The people of Israel are his servants.
The descendants of Jacob are his chosen people.
14 The Lord is our God.
He rules the whole world.
15 Remember his agreement forever,
the promise he gave that will never end.
16 Remember the agreement he made with Abraham
Remember his promise to Isaac.
17 He gave it as a law for Jacob,
as an agreement with Israel that will last forever.
18 He said, “I will give you the land of Canaan.
It will be your very own.”

19 At the time God said this, there were only a few of his people,
and they were strangers there.
20 They traveled around from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
21 But the Lord did not let anyone mistreat them.
He warned kings not to harm them.
22 He said, “Don’t hurt my chosen people.
Don’t hurt my prophets.”
23 Let the whole world sing to the Lord !
Tell the good news every day about how he saves us.
24 Tell all the nations how wonderful he is!
Tell people everywhere about the amazing things he does.
25 The Lord is great and worthy of praise.
He is more awesome than any of the “gods.”
26 All the “gods” in other nations are nothing but statues,
but the Lord made the heavens!
27 He lives in the presence of glory and honor.
His Temple is a place of power and joy.
28 Praise the Lord , all people of every nation;
praise the Lord ’s glory and power!
29 Give the Lord praise worthy of his glory.
Come into his presence with your offerings.
Worship the Lord in all his holy beauty.
30 Everyone on earth should tremble before him!
But the world stands firm and cannot be moved.
31 Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be happy!
Let people everywhere say, “The Lord rules!”
32 Let the sea and everything in it shout for joy!
Let the fields and everything in them be happy!
33 The trees of the forest will sing for joy when they see the Lord ,
because he is coming to rule the world.
34 Give thanks to the Lord because he is good.
His faithful love will last forever.
35 Say to him,
“Save us, God our Savior.
Bring us back together,
and save us from the other nations.
Then we will give thanks to your holy name
and joyfully praise you.”
36 Praise the Lord , the God of Israel!
He always was and will always be worthy of praise!

All the people praised the Lord and said “Amen!”

37 Then David left Asaph and his brothers there in front of the Box of the Lord ’s Agreement. David left them there to serve in front of it every day. 38 He also left Obed Edom and 68 other Levites to serve with Asaph and his brothers. Obed Edom and Hosah were guards. Obed Edom was Jeduthun’s son.

39 David left Zadok the priest and the other priests who served with him in front of the Lord ’s Tent [ a ] at the high place in Gibeon. 40 Every morning and evening Zadok and the other priests offered burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offerings. They did this to follow the rules written in the law of the Lord , which he had given Israel. 41 Heman, Jeduthun, and all the other Levites were chosen by name to praise the Lord , singing, “His faithful love will last forever.” 42 Heman and Jeduthun were with them. They had the job of blowing the trumpets and playing cymbals. They also had the job of playing other musical instruments when songs were sung to God. Jeduthun’s sons guarded the gates.

43 After the celebration, all the people left and went home. David also went home to bless his family.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Chronicles 16:39 Lord ’s Tent Or “Tabernacle.” Also called the “Meeting Tent.” The people would go to this tent to meet with God. They used this tent until Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem.

16 So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.

2 And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord .

3 And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine.

4 And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord , and to record, and to thank and praise the Lord God of Israel:

5 Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obededom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;

6 Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.

7 Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the Lord into the hand of Asaph and his brethren.

8 Give thanks unto the Lord , call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.

9 Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.

10 Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord .

11 Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.

12 Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

13 O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14 He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

15 Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;

16 Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;

17 And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,

18 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;

19 When ye were but few, even a few, and strangers in it.

20 And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people;

21 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,

22 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

23 Sing unto the Lord , all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.

24 Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations.

25 For great is the Lord , and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.

26 For all the gods of the people are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.

27 Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place.

28 Give unto the Lord , ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength.

29 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

30 Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.

31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The Lord reigneth.

32 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein.

33 Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the Lord , because he cometh to judge the earth.

34 O give thanks unto the Lord ; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

35 And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.

36 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the Lord .

37 So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day's work required:

38 And Obededom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obededom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be porters:

39 And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the Lord in the high place that was at Gibeon,

40 To offer burnt offerings unto the Lord upon the altar of the burnt offering continually morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the law of the Lord , which he commanded Israel;

41 And with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name, to give thanks to the Lord , because his mercy endureth for ever;

42 And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were porters.

43 And all the people departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless his house.
