- Zechariah Chapter 4
4 The angel that talked with me before woke me. I, Zechariah, was like a man who wakes out of his sleep. 2 The angel said to me, ‘What do you see?’ I said, ‘I see a lampstand that is made from gold. It has seven lamps and a bowl on top which contains oil. And it has seven branches that take the oil to each lamp. 3 And two olive trees are standing by the lampstand. One tree is on the right and one tree is on the left.’
4 I, Zechariah, said to the angel that talked with me, ‘What does this light mean, my lord?’
5 He said, ‘Do you not know what these are?’
I said, ‘No, my lord.’
6 Then the angel said to me, ‘The Lord said this to Zerubbabel: “You will need my Spirit. You yourself are too weak. [ a ] And you do not have enough power.” This is what the Lord Almighty says: 7 “Big mountain, you are no problem. You will become flat ground in front of Zerubbabel. Then he will bring out the last and biggest stone of my house. The people will shout, ‘God bless it! God bless it!’ ” ’
8 Then the Lord 's message came to me, Zechariah. He said, 9 ‘Zerubbabel has put down the first stone of my house. He will also finish it.’ [ b ] Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.
10 Everyone should know that the day of small things is important.
Men will see Zerubbabel. Then they will sing and they will be happy. They will see him with a line in his hand to measure the walls.
The Lord sees everything in the whole earth. (The seven lights are the seven eyes of the Lord .)
11 Then I said to the angel, ‘What are these two olive trees that stand on the right and on the left of the lampstand?’
12 A second time I spoke to the angel, ‘What are these two branches of the olive trees? They are next to the gold pipes and oil comes from those pipes.’
13 The angel replied, ‘Do you not know what these olive trees mean?’
‘No, my lord,’ I said.
14 So the angel said, ‘These are the two men that the Lord of all the earth has chosen to be his servants.’ [ c ]
4 Then the angel who was talking to me returned and woke me up. I was like a person waking up from sleep. 2 Then the angel asked me, “What do you see?”
I said, “I see a solid gold lampstand. There are seven lamps [ a ] on the lampstand, and there is a bowl on top of it. There are seven tubes coming from the bowl. One tube goes to each lamp. The tubes bring the oil in the bowl to each of the lamps. 3 There are two olive trees by the bowl, one on the right side and one on the left side. These trees produce the oil for the lamps. ” 4 Then I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “Sir, what do these things mean?”
5 The angel speaking with me said, “Don’t you know what these things are?”
“No sir,” I said.
6 He said, “This is the message from the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Your help will not come from your own strength and power. No, your help will come from my Spirit.’ This is what the Lord All-Powerful says. 7 That tall mountain will be like a flat place for Zerubbabel. He will build the Temple, and when the most important stone is put in place, the people will shout, ‘Beautiful! Beautiful!’”
8 The Lord ’s message to me also said, 9 “Zerubbabel will lay the foundations for my Temple, and he will finish building it. Then you will know that the Lord All-Powerful sent me to you people. 10 People will not be ashamed of the small beginnings, and they will be very happy when they see Zerubbabel with the plumb line, [ b ] measuring and checking the finished building. Now the seven sides [ c ] of the stone you saw represent the eyes of the Lord looking in every direction. They see everything on earth.”
11 Then I said to him, “I saw one olive tree on the right side of the lampstand and one on the left side. What do those two olive trees mean?” 12 I also said to him, “I saw two olive branches by the gold tubes with gold colored oil flowing from them. What do these things mean?”
13 Then the angel said to me, “Don’t you know what these things mean?”
I said, “No, sir.”
14 So he said, “They represent the two men chosen [ d ] to serve the Lord of the whole world.”
4 And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep.
2 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.
4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?
5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.
7 Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.
8 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you.
10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord , which run to and fro through the whole earth.
11 Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof?
12 And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?
13 And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.
4 Then ( A ) the angel who had been speaking with me returned and ( B ) woke me, like a person who is awakened from his sleep. 2 And he said to me, “ ( C ) What do you see?” And I said, “I see, and behold, a ( D ) lampstand all of gold with its bowl on the top of it, and its ( E ) seven lamps on it with seven [ a ] spouts belonging to each of the lamps which are on the top of it; 3 also ( F ) two olive trees by it, one on the right side of the bowl and the other on its left side.” 4 Then I said to the angel who was speaking with me, saying, “What are these, ( G ) my lord?” 5 So ( H ) the angel who was speaking with me answered and said to me, “ ( I ) Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.” 6 Then he said to [ b ] me, “This is the word of the Lord to ( J ) Zerubbabel, saying, ‘ ( K ) Not by might nor by power, but by My ( L ) Spirit,’ says the Lord of armies. 7 ‘What are you, you great ( M ) mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain; and he will bring out the top stone with ( N ) shouts of “Grace, grace to it!”’”
8 Also the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 9 “The hands of Zerubbabel have ( O ) laid the foundation of this house, and his hands will ( P ) finish it . Then you will know that the Lord of armies has sent me to [ c ] you. 10 For who has shown contempt for the day of ( Q ) small things? [ d ] But these ( R ) seven will rejoice when they see the [ e ] ( S ) plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel—they are the ( T ) eyes of the Lord ( U ) roaming throughout the earth.”
11 Then I said to him, “What are these ( V ) two olive trees on the right of the lampstand and on its left?” 12 And I responded the second time and said to him, “What are the two olive [ f ] branches which are beside the two golden pipes, which empty the golden oil from themselves?” 13 So he answered me, saying, “ ( W ) Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, ( X ) my lord.” 14 Then he said, “These are the two [ g ] ( Y ) anointed ones, who are ( Z ) standing by the ( AA ) Lord of the whole earth.”
4 Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke ( A ) me up, like someone awakened from sleep. ( B ) 2 He asked me, “What do you see?” ( C )
I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand ( D ) with a bowl at the top and seven lamps ( E ) on it, with seven channels to the lamps. 3 Also there are two olive trees ( F ) by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”
4 I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”
5 He answered, “Do you not know what these are?”
“No, my lord,” I replied. ( G )
6 So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ( H ) ‘Not ( I ) by might nor by power, ( J ) but by my Spirit,’ ( K ) says the Lord Almighty.
7 “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. ( L ) Then he will bring out the capstone ( M ) to shouts ( N ) of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”
8 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9 “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation ( O ) of this temple; his hands will also complete it. ( P ) Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me ( Q ) to you.
10 “Who dares despise the day ( R ) of small things, ( S ) since the seven eyes ( T ) of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone [ a ] in the hand of Zerubbabel?” ( U )
11 Then I asked the angel, “What are these two olive trees ( V ) on the right and the left of the lampstand?”
12 Again I asked him, “What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?”
13 He replied, “Do you not know what these are?”
“No, my lord,” I said.
14 So he said, “These are the two who are anointed ( W ) to [ b ] serve the Lord of all the earth.”
