Do what is right

3 Tell the believers there to respect the government and those who have authority. They must remember to obey their rulers. They must always be ready to help other people. 2 They must not say bad things about anyone. They must not quarrel with people. Instead, they should be kind and polite to everyone.

3 Before we believed in Christ, we ourselves were fools too. We did not obey God. We believed a false message. We wanted to do many kinds of bad things to make us happy. We could not stop doing them. Every day we did evil things. We were jealous of other people. People hated us, and we hated each other.

4 But then God, our Saviour, showed clearly that he is very kind. He showed that he loves all people. 5 God did not save us because of any good things that we ourselves had done. He saved us because he chose to forgive us. God has washed us so that we are clean inside. We have been born again, so that we live a new life. God's Holy Spirit has done this for us. 6 Jesus Christ died as a sacrifice to save us. So now God has poured his Holy Spirit into us, to fill us. 7 Because God is very kind, he has accepted us as right with himself. As a result, we know that we will receive the good things that God has prepared for us. We know that we will live with God for ever.

8 That message is certainly true. So you must teach people the things that I have said in this letter. Make sure that they understand them well. Then the people who have believed in God will be careful to do good things. Good things like that will help everyone.

9 But stay away from people who argue about silly things. They study long lists of their families' names from years ago. Refuse to quarrel with people like that. Refuse to argue about the rules in God's Law. All those kinds of things have no value and they do not help anyone. 10 If someone teaches a false message that causes trouble, warn him. If you warn him twice and he still does not stop, stay away from him. 11 You know that a person like that has chosen not to believe the true message. He knows that he is doing a bad thing, but he continues to do it.

Paul finishes his letter

12 I will send either Artemas or Tychicus to you. [ a ] After one of them has arrived, please come to meet me in Nicopolis. Come as quickly as you can. I have decided that I will stay in Nicopolis during the winter. [ b ]

13 Please help Zenas, the lawyer, and Apollos as much as you can. [ c ] Make sure that they have everything that they need for their journey. 14 Our Christian friends there must learn to do good things. They should supply things to people who need help. That will show that their lives are really useful.

15 Everyone who is here with me says ‘hello’ to you. Please say ‘hello’ on our behalf to the believers there who love us. I pray that God will continue to be very kind to all of you.

  1. 3:12 We do not know who Artemas was. Tychicus was a man who had travelled with Paul. See Acts 20:4 ; Ephesians 6:21-22 ; Colossians 4:7 ; 2 Timothy 4:12 .
  2. 3:12 Nicopolis was a city on the west coast of the country that we call Greece.
  3. 3:13 The name ‘Apollos’ is also in Acts 18:24 ; 19:1 , and in 1 Corinthians 1:12 ; 3:4 ; 16:12 .

The Right Way to Live

3 Remind your people that they should always be under the authority of rulers and government leaders. They should obey these leaders and be ready to do good. 2 Tell them not to speak evil of anyone but to live in peace with others. They should be gentle and polite to everyone.

3 In the past we were foolish too. We did not obey, we were wrong, and we were slaves to the many things our bodies wanted and enjoyed. We lived doing evil and being jealous. People hated us and we hated each other. 4 But then the kindness and love of God our Savior was made known. 5 He saved us because of his mercy, not because of any good things we did. He saved us through the washing that made us new people. He saved us by making us new through the Holy Spirit. 6 God poured out to us that Holy Spirit fully through Jesus Christ our Savior. 7 We were made right with God by his grace. God saved us so that we could be his children and look forward to receiving life that never ends. 8 This is a true statement.

And I want you to be sure that the people understand these things. Then those who believe in God will be careful to use their lives for doing good. These things are good and will help everyone.

9 Stay away from those who have foolish arguments, who talk about useless family histories, or who make trouble and fight about what the Law of Moses teaches. These things are useless and will not help anyone. 10 Give a warning to all those who cause arguments. If they continue to cause trouble after a second warning, then don’t associate with them. 11 You know that people like that are evil and sinful. Their sins prove they are wrong.

Final Instructions and Greetings

12 I will send Artemas and Tychicus to you. When I send them, try hard to come to me at Nicopolis. I have decided to stay there this winter. 13 Zenas the lawyer and Apollos will be traveling from there. Do all that you can to help them prepare for their trip. Be sure that they have everything they need. 14 Our people must learn to use their lives for doing good and helping anyone who has a need. Then they will not have empty lives.

15 All the people with me here send you their greetings. Give my greetings to those who love us in the faith.

Grace be with you all.

3 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,

5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;

11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

12 When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.

13 Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.

14 And let our's also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.

15 All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Godly Living

3 ( A ) Remind them ( B ) to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ( C ) ready for every good deed, 2 to slander no one, ( D ) not to be contentious, to be ( E ) gentle, ( F ) showing every consideration for all people. 3 ( G ) For we too were once foolish, ( H ) disobedient, ( I ) deceived, ( J ) enslaved to ( K ) various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in ( L ) malice and ( M ) envy, hateful, hating one another. 4 But when the ( N ) kindness of ( O ) God our Savior and His love for mankind ( P ) appeared, 5 ( Q ) He saved us, ( R ) not on the basis of deeds which we did in righteousness, but ( S ) in accordance with His mercy, by the ( T ) washing of regeneration and ( U ) renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 ( V ) whom He ( W ) richly poured out upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made ( X ) heirs [ a ] according to the hope of eternal life. 8 ( Y ) This statement is trustworthy; and concerning these things I ( Z ) want you to speak confidently, so that those who have ( AA ) believed God will be careful to ( AB ) engage in good deeds. These things are good and beneficial for people. 9 But ( AC ) avoid ( AD ) foolish controversies and ( AE ) genealogies and strife and ( AF ) disputes about the Law, for they are ( AG ) useless and worthless. 10 ( AH ) Reject a [ b ] ( AI ) divisive person ( AJ ) after a first and second warning, 11 knowing that such a person has ( AK ) deviated from what is right and is sinning, being self-condemned.

Personal Concerns

12 When I send Artemas or ( AL ) Tychicus to you, ( AM ) make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to ( AN ) spend the winter there. 13 Diligently help Zenas the ( AO ) lawyer and ( AP ) Apollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them. 14 ( AQ ) Our people must also learn to ( AR ) engage in good [ c ] deeds to meet ( AS ) pressing needs, so that they will not be ( AT ) unproductive.

15 ( AU ) All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us ( AV ) in the faith.

( AW ) Grace be with you all.

Saved in Order to Do Good

3 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, ( A ) to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, ( B ) 2 to slander no one, ( C ) to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.

3 At one time ( D ) we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness ( E ) and love of God our Savior ( F ) appeared, ( G ) 5 he saved us, ( H ) not because of righteous things we had done, ( I ) but because of his mercy. ( J ) He saved us through the washing ( K ) of rebirth and renewal ( L ) by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us ( M ) generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, ( N ) we might become heirs ( O ) having the hope ( P ) of eternal life. ( Q ) 8 This is a trustworthy saying. ( R ) And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. ( S ) These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

9 But avoid ( T ) foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels ( U ) about the law, ( V ) because these are unprofitable and useless. ( W ) 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. ( X ) 11 You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.

Final Remarks

12 As soon as I send Artemas or Tychicus ( Y ) to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, because I have decided to winter there. ( Z ) 13 Do everything you can to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos ( AA ) on their way and see that they have everything they need. 14 Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, ( AB ) in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.

15 Everyone with me sends you greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith. ( AC )
