Titus must teach all the believers properly

2 But as for you, Titus, you must teach people to do what is right. Teach them only the things that belong to God's true message. 2 Tell the older men to control themselves properly. They must think carefully about how they live, so that people respect them. They must continue to believe in Christ. They must continue to love other people. They must continue to be patient and strong.

3 Also, tell the older women to live in a good way. Their lives must show that they respect God. They must not say bad things about other people. They must not be drunks. They must teach what is good. 4 In this way, they can teach the young women how they should live. As a result, the young women will love their husbands and their children. 5 The young women will control themselves well and be pure in how they live. They will be good housewives who are kind to other people. [ a ] They will respect their husbands. If they live in a good way like that, nobody will be able to say bad things about God's message.

6 As for the young men, tell them also to control themselves wisely in how they live. 7 You yourself must always do good things too. In that way, you will show the young men how they should live. When you teach the believers, be honest and serious. 8 Teach a message that is correct, so that nobody can say anything against it. Then our enemies will be ashamed, because they cannot say anything bad about us.

9 As for slaves, tell them to obey their masters always. They must not argue with their masters. Instead, they should work well to please their masters. 10 Slaves must not take things that belong to their masters. Their masters must be able to trust them completely. Then people will respect the message that we teach about God, our Saviour.

God gives believers a new life

11 God has shown us clearly how very kind he is. He has come to save all people. 12 Because God is kind, he teaches us to stop living in a bad way. We no longer do the bad things that do not make God happy. We turn away from the bad things that belong to this world. God teaches us to control ourselves wisely while we live in this world. He teaches us to do what is right. He teaches us to please him in the way that we live.

13 Remember this: We are waiting for Jesus Christ to return to this world. When he comes, that will make us very happy. Everyone will see how great Jesus Christ is. He is our great God. He is the one who saves us from our sins. 14 He gave himself as a sacrifice on our behalf. He did that to make us free from every kind of bad thing. As a result, we can be completely good and clean inside ourselves. We can become his own special people, who want to do good things.

15 You must teach these things to the believers. Help them to live in a good way. Warn them when they do wrong things. Use all the authority that you have as a leader in the church. Make sure that everyone respects you properly.

Following the True Teaching

2 You, however, must tell everyone how to live in a way that agrees with the true teaching. 2 Teach the older men to have self-control, to be serious, and to be wise. They must be strong in faith, in love, and in patience.

3 Also, teach the older women to live the way those who serve the Lord should live. They should not go around saying bad things about others or be in the habit of drinking too much. They should teach what is good. 4 By doing this they will teach the younger women to love their husbands and children. 5 They will teach them to be wise and pure, to take care of their homes, to be kind, and to be willing to serve their husbands. Then no one will be able to criticize the teaching God gave us.

6 In the same way, tell the young men to be wise. 7 You should be an example for them in every way by the good things you do. When you teach, be honest and serious. 8 And your teaching should be clearly right so that you cannot be criticized. Then anyone who is against you will be ashamed. There will not be anything bad they can say about us.

9 And tell this to those who are slaves: They should be willing to serve their masters at all times; they should try to please them, not argue with them; 10 they should not steal from them; and they should show their masters that they can be trusted. Then, in everything they do, they will show that the teaching of God our Savior is good.

11 That is the way we should live, because God’s grace has come. That grace can save everyone. 12 It teaches us not to live against God and not to do the bad things the world wants to do. It teaches us to live on earth now in a wise and right way—a way that shows true devotion to God. 13 We should live like that while we are waiting for the coming of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. He is our great hope, and he will come with glory. 14 He gave himself for us. He died to free us from all evil. He died to make us pure—people who belong only to him and who always want to do good.

15 These are the things you should tell people. Encourage them, and when they are wrong, correct them. You have full authority to do this, so don’t let anyone think they can ignore you.

2 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;

10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Proclaim Sound Doctrine

2 But as for you, proclaim the things which are fitting for ( A ) sound doctrine. 2 ( B ) Older men are to be [ a ] ( C ) temperate, dignified, self-controlled, ( D ) sound ( E ) in faith, in love, in [ b ] perseverance.

3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, ( F ) not malicious gossips nor ( G ) enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4 so that they may [ c ] encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, ( H ) workers at home, kind, being ( I ) subject to their own husbands, ( J ) so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

6 Likewise urge ( K ) the young men to be [ d ] sensible; 7 in all things show yourself to be ( L ) an example of good deeds, with [ e ] purity in doctrine, dignified, 8 sound in speech which is beyond reproach, ( M ) so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.

9 Urge [ f ] ( N ) slaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be pleasing, not [ g ] argumentative, 10 not stealing, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of ( O ) God our Savior in every respect.

11 For the grace of God has ( P ) appeared, [ h ] ( Q ) bringing salvation to all people, 12 [ i ] instructing us to deny ungodliness and ( R ) worldly desires and ( S ) to live sensibly, righteously, and in a godly manner ( T ) in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the ( U ) appearing of the glory of [ j ] ( V ) our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who ( W ) gave Himself for us ( X ) to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to ( Y ) purify for Himself a ( Z ) people for His own possession, ( AA ) eager for good deeds.

15 These things speak and ( AB ) [ k ] exhort, and ( AC ) rebuke with all authority. ( AD ) No one is to disregard you.

Doing Good for the Sake of the Gospel

2 You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. ( A ) 2 Teach the older men ( B ) to be temperate, ( C ) worthy of respect, self-controlled, ( D ) and sound in faith, ( E ) in love and in endurance.

3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers ( F ) or addicted to much wine, ( G ) but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can urge the younger women ( H ) to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled ( I ) and pure, to be busy at home, ( J ) to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, ( K ) so that no one will malign the word of God. ( L )

6 Similarly, encourage the young men ( M ) to be self-controlled. ( N ) 7 In everything set them an example ( O ) by doing what is good. ( P ) In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. ( Q )

9 Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, ( R ) to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior ( S ) attractive. ( T )

11 For the grace ( U ) of God has appeared ( V ) that offers salvation to all people. ( W ) 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, ( X ) and to live self-controlled, ( Y ) upright and godly lives ( Z ) in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing ( AA ) of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, ( AB ) 14 who gave himself for us ( AC ) to redeem us from all wickedness ( AD ) and to purify ( AE ) for himself a people that are his very own, ( AF ) eager to do what is good. ( AG )

15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.
