Sin does not rule us any longer

6 Someone might say, ‘Perhaps we should continue to do wrong things. Then God can be kind to us in more and more ways.’ 2 No! Certainly we should not do that! Sin does not rule our lives any longer. That old life is dead! So it is not right that we should continue to do wrong things. 3 Remember what your baptism shows: When they baptized you, it shows that you are united with Christ Jesus. It also shows that, because Christ died, your old life also died. [ a ] 4 Your baptism shows that they buried you, just like they buried Christ after his death. It is like you died with him and they buried you with him. Because of that, God will also raise us, just as he raised Christ from death. God, the Father, is so great and powerful that he raised Christ to a new life. That means that we also can live our lives in a new way.

5 We have become united with Christ, and we have died like he died. Because of that, we will also be united with him in his new life. Just like Christ rose, we also will rise to a new life. 6 We know that God has caused our old nature to die with Christ on the cross. This happened so that God could make us free from the power of sin in our lives. We are no longer like slaves who have sin as their master. 7 Sin no longer has any authority over someone who has died.

8 So, if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 God raised Christ, so that he became alive again after his death. Because of that, we know that he will never die again. Death has no authority over him any more. 10 When Christ died, he died once to destroy the power of sin for ever. Now that he is alive again, he lives to serve God. 11 So you also should think about yourselves in the same way. Sin has no power over you, as if you were dead. In your new life, you live to serve God, because you belong to Christ Jesus.

12 So do not let sin rule your life in this world. Do not do the wrong things that your body wants to do. 13 Sin can use your body to do things that are wrong. So do not let any parts of your body serve sin as their master. Instead, be ready to serve God as your Master. You can do that because you now have a new life. Your old life is dead. So give every part of your body to God. Then he will use you to do right things. 14 Sin will no longer have authority over you. You do not have a new life because you obey the Law which God gave to Moses. You have a new life because God is very kind to you.

Be careful to do what is right

15 Someone might say: ‘So we have a new life because God is kind to us. God's Law that he gave to Moses does not rule us any more. Then maybe we should continue to do wrong things. It will not make any difference.’ No, that is not true! 16 Remember this: When you agree to serve someone as a slave, you have to obey that person as your master. You may choose to serve sin as your master. If you do that, you will die. [ b ] Or you may choose to obey God. If you do that, you will live in a way that is right. 17 At one time, you were slaves to sin. But then you received God's true message, and you were happy to obey it. I thank God because of that! 18 As a result, God has made you free from the power of sin. You are now like slaves who serve everything that is right and good.

19 It is difficult for you to understand these things, because you are still weak. So I am using a human picture of slaves to help you to understand better. At one time, you agreed to serve bad things as your master. You let your body do wrong and disgusting things. You continued to do more and more bad things. So now, you must use your body to serve what is right and good. Then you will do more and more good things which show that you belong to God.

20 When you were slaves to sin, you did not even have to think about what was right and good. 21 You did things that you are ashamed about now. Nothing good came from them. In the end, the result of those things is death. 22 But now God has made you free from the power of sin. You have become God's slaves. Many good things come from that, because God is helping you to live in a good way. In the end, the result will be that you will live with him for ever.

23 If you serve sin as your master, it will pay you with death. But if you belong to our Lord Jesus Christ, God gives you a gift! That gift is life with God for ever.

  1. 6:3 Baptism shows that we are united with Christ in our spirits. In our spirits, we die with Christ and then we rise again, to live a new life. So we have a new nature because of Christ. See Colossians 2:12 .
  2. 6:16 When Paul talks about death here, he means that people die in their spirits. They have become separate from God and the true life which he gives to believers. See Romans 5:12-14 .

Dead to Sin but Alive in Christ

6 So do you think we should continue sinning so that God will give us more and more grace? 2 Of course not! Our old sinful life ended. It’s dead. So how can we continue living in sin? 3 Did you forget that all of us became part of Christ Jesus when we were baptized? In our baptism we shared in his death. 4 So when we were baptized, we were buried with Christ and took part in his death. And just as Christ was raised from death by the wonderful power of the Father, so we can now live a new life.

5 Christ died, and we have been joined with him by dying too. So we will also be joined with him by rising from death as he did. 6 We know that our old life was put to death on the cross with Christ. This happened so that our sinful selves would have no power over us. Then we would not be slaves to sin. 7 Anyone who has died is made free from sin’s control.

8 If we died with Christ, we know that we will also live with him. 9 Christ was raised from death. And we know that he cannot die again. Death has no power over him now. 10 Yes, when Christ died, he died to defeat the power of sin one time—enough for all time. He now has a new life, and his new life is with God. 11 In the same way, you should see yourselves as being dead to the power of sin and alive for God through Christ Jesus.

12 But don’t let sin control your life here on earth. You must not be ruled by the things your sinful self makes you want to do. 13 Don’t offer the parts of your body to serve sin. Don’t use your bodies to do evil, but offer yourselves to God, as people who have died and now live. Offer the parts of your body to God to be used for doing good. 14 Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God’s grace.

Slaves of Goodness

15 So what should we do? Should we sin because we are under grace and not under law? Certainly not! 16 Surely you know that you become the slaves of whatever you give yourselves to. Anything or anyone you follow will be your master. You can follow sin, or you can obey God. Following sin brings spiritual death, but obeying God makes you right with him. 17 In the past you were slaves to sin—sin controlled you. But thank God, you fully obeyed what you were taught. 18 You were made free from sin, and now you are slaves to what is right. 19 I use this example from everyday life because you need help in understanding spiritual truths. In the past you offered the parts of your body to be slaves to your immoral and sinful thoughts. The result was that you lived only for sin. In the same way, you must now offer yourselves to be slaves to what is right. Then you will live only for God.

20 In the past you were slaves to sin, and you did not even think about doing right. 21 You did evil things, and now you are ashamed of what you did. Did those things help you? No, they only brought death. 22 But now you are free from sin. You have become slaves of God, and the result is that you live only for God. This will bring you eternal life. 23 When people sin, they earn what sin pays—death. But God gives his people a free gift—eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Believers Are Dead to Sin, Alive to God

6 ( A ) What shall we say then? Are we to ( B ) continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 [ a ] ( C ) Far from it! How shall we who ( D ) died to sin still live in it? 3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been ( E ) baptized into ( F ) Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been ( G ) buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was ( H ) raised from the dead through the ( I ) glory of the Father, so we too may walk in ( J ) newness of life. 5 For ( K ) if we have become [ b ] united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be [ c ] in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our ( L ) old [ d ] self was ( M ) crucified with Him , in order that our ( N ) body of sin might be [ e ] done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for ( O ) the one who has died is [ f ] freed from sin.

8 Now ( P ) if we have died with Christ, we believe that ( Q ) we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been ( R ) raised from the dead, [ g ] is never to die again; ( S ) death no longer is master over Him. 10 For [ h ] the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time ; but [ i ] the life that He lives, He lives to [ j ] God. 11 So you too, consider yourselves to be ( T ) dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore sin is not to ( U ) reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on ( V ) presenting [ k ] the parts of your body to sin as [ l ] instruments of unrighteousness; but ( W ) present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and [ m ] your body’s parts as [ n ] instruments of righteousness for God. 14 For ( X ) sin shall not ( Y ) be master over you, for ( Z ) you are not under [ o ] the Law but ( AA ) under grace.

15 What then? ( AB ) Are we to sin because we are not under [ p ] the Law but under grace? [ q ] ( AC ) Far from it! 16 Do you not ( AD ) know that the one to whom you present yourselves as ( AE ) slaves for obedience, you are slaves of that same one whom you obey, either of ( AF ) sin [ r ] resulting in death, or of obedience [ s ] resulting in righteousness? 17 But ( AG ) thanks be to God that [ t ] though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that [ u ] ( AH ) form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and after being ( AI ) freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness. 19 ( AJ ) I am speaking [ v ] in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just ( AK ) as you presented [ w ] the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, [ x ] resulting in further lawlessness, so now present [ y ] your body’s parts as slaves to righteousness, [ z ] resulting in sanctification.

20 For ( AL ) when you were slaves of sin, you were free in relation to righteousness. 21 Therefore what [ aa ] ( AM ) benefit were you then [ ab ] deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is ( AN ) death. 22 But now having been ( AO ) freed from sin and ( AP ) enslaved to God, you [ ac ] derive your [ ad ] ( AQ ) benefit, [ ae ] resulting in sanctification, and ( AR ) the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of ( AS ) sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is ( AT ) eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

6 What shall we say, then? ( A ) Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? ( B ) 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; ( C ) how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized ( D ) into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death ( E ) in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead ( F ) through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. ( G )

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. ( H ) 6 For we know that our old self ( I ) was crucified with him ( J ) so that the body ruled by sin ( K ) might be done away with, [ a ] that we should no longer be slaves to sin ( L ) — 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. ( M )

8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. ( N ) 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, ( O ) he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. ( P ) 10 The death he died, he died to sin ( Q ) once for all; ( R ) but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin ( S ) but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign ( T ) in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, ( U ) but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. ( V ) 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, ( W ) because you are not under the law, ( X ) but under grace. ( Y )

Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? ( Z ) By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey ( AA ) —whether you are slaves to sin, ( AB ) which leads to death, ( AC ) or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God ( AD ) that, though you used to be slaves to sin, ( AE ) you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching ( AF ) that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin ( AG ) and have become slaves to righteousness. ( AH )

19 I am using an example from everyday life ( AI ) because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness ( AJ ) leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to sin, ( AK ) you were free from the control of righteousness. ( AL ) 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! ( AM ) 22 But now that you have been set free from sin ( AN ) and have become slaves of God, ( AO ) the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. ( AP ) 23 For the wages of sin is death, ( AQ ) but the gift of God is eternal life ( AR ) in [ b ] Christ Jesus our Lord.
