- Romans Chapter 2
2 So I say this to each one of you: Do not judge other people. If you decide that someone else has done a bad thing, remember that you also do the same bad things. You are really saying that God should punish you also! When you judge someone, God will not punish them and then forgive you. 2 When God judges people, he does it in a way that is right and fair. He punishes people who do those kind of bad things.
3 I ask each of you again: ‘Do you speak against people who do bad things, but you do those same bad things yourself?’ Then God will certainly punish you and you will not go free. 4 Remember that God is very kind and patient with us. He waits a long time before he punishes us. Do you not think that that is important? You should understand that God is giving you a chance to change. He waits patiently, so that you may turn away from wrong things.
5 But you refuse to change the way that you live. You are not sorry about the wrong things that you have done. As a result, you cause God to become even angrier with you. So he will punish you even more on the day when he will judge everyone. On that day, he will show how angry he is against people who do bad things. Everyone will know that he judges people in a right way. 6 He will give to each person what they ought to have because of the things that they have done. 7 Some people continue patiently to do good things. They want to do what is right so that God will praise them. They want to live the kind of life which death will not spoil. God will cause people like that to live with him always. 8 But other people think only about themselves. They refuse to obey God's true message. Instead, they continue to do things that are wrong. God will be very angry with people like that and he will punish them. 9 God will punish everyone who does bad things. He will do that first to the Jews, and he will do it also to the Gentiles. There will be much trouble and pain for every person who does bad things. 10 But God will praise every person who does good things. He will make them great and they will have peace in their minds. He will do that first for the Jews, and he will do it also for the Gentiles. 11 God is always fair when he judges people, whoever they are.
12 The Gentiles do not have God's Law that he gave to Moses. [ a ] If Gentiles do wrong things, God will punish them. But he will not use his Law when he judges the Gentiles. But the Jews do have God's Law. So, if Jews do wrong things, God will use his Law to judge them. The Law will show that they have done wrong things. 13 Who does God accept as right with himself? It is those people who obey his Law. It is not the people who only know his Law but do not obey them.
14 The Gentiles do not have God's Law. But they may still do the right things that the Law teaches. They do right things because of what they themselves think is right. In that way they are showing that they have a certain law in their minds, even though they do not know God's Law. 15 Those people show that they know what is right. It is as if God has written his Law deep inside them. Their thoughts tell them the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Sometimes their thoughts say: ‘You did something that is wrong.’ And sometimes their thoughts say: ‘You did what is right.’
16 That is the message that I tell people. God knows everything that people think secretly. One day he will judge everyone. He has given Jesus Christ the authority to do that.
17 Do you say that you are a Jew? Maybe you trust in the Law that God gave to Moses. You are proud that you belong to God. 18 You know what God wants people to do. His Law teaches you what is good and right. 19 You are sure that you yourself can teach other people about God. You think that you can be like a guide to blind people. You think that you can be like a light to people who are in the dark. 20 You are sure that you can teach fools and people who do not know very much. You know that God's Law tells you everything about what is true. Because it helps you to know so much, you think that you can be a great teacher!
21 So you teach other people, do you? But do you teach yourself? You tell other people, ‘Do not rob anyone.’ But maybe you yourself rob other people. 22 You say, ‘People must not have sex with anyone who is not their wife or their husband.’ But maybe you yourself have sex in a wrong way. You say that you hate idols. But do you rob places where people worship idols? 23 You are proud that you know God's Law. But you do not obey that Law. As a result, you cause other people to speak against God. 24 This is written in the Bible:
‘Because of you Jews, the Gentiles say bad things against God.’
25 As a Jewish man, you are proud that someone has circumcised you. [ b ] That is a help to you, if you obey God's Law in your life. But if you do not obey God's Law, then it is worth nothing. You have become like a Gentile that nobody has ever circumcised. 26 But a Gentile may obey what God's Law teaches. Then he has shown that he belongs to God even though nobody has circumcised him. 27 In that way, even Gentiles will show that you who are Jews are wrong. God's Law was written to help you Jews. They circumcised you to show that you belong to God. But if you refuse to obey God's Law, then God will punish you. The Gentiles who do obey God's Law will show that God is right to punish you.
28 Not everyone who seems to be a Jew is really a Jew who belongs to God. God does not accept a man just because someone has circumcised that man's body. 29 No! A true Jew is someone who belongs to God in his spirit. He belongs to God because God's Spirit has changed his life. It is like God has circumcised him in his spirit, not in his body. The rules in God's Law cannot do that work in a person. Other people may not praise a person like that, but God will praise him.
2 So do you think that you can judge those other people? You are wrong. You too are guilty of sin. You judge them, but you do the same things they do. So when you judge them, you are really condemning yourself. 2 God judges all who do such things, and we know his judgment is right. 3 And since you do the same things as those people you judge, surely you understand that God will punish you too. How could you think you would be able to escape his judgment? 4 God has been kind to you. He has been very patient, waiting for you to change. But you think nothing of his kindness. Maybe you don’t understand that God is kind to you so that you will decide to change your lives.
5 But you are so stubborn! You refuse to change. So you are making your own punishment greater and greater. You will be punished on the day when God will show his anger. On that day everyone will see how right God is to judge people. 6 He will reward or punish everyone for what they have done. 7 Some people live for God’s glory, for honor, and for life that cannot be destroyed. They live for those things by always continuing to do good. God will give eternal life to them. 8 But others are selfish and refuse to follow truth. They follow evil. God will show his anger and punish them. 9 He will give trouble and suffering to everyone who does evil—to the Jews first and also to those who are not Jews. 10 But he will give glory, honor, and peace to everyone who does good—to the Jews first and also to those who are not Jews. 11 God judges everyone the same. It doesn’t matter who they are.
12 People who have the law and those who have never heard of the law are all the same when they sin. People who don’t have the law and are sinners will be lost. And, in the same way, those who have the law and are sinners will be judged by the law. 13 Hearing the law does not make people right with God. They will be right before him only if they always do what the law says.
14 Those who are not Jews don’t have the law. But when they naturally do what the law commands without even knowing the law, then they are their own law. This is true even though they don’t have the written law. 15 They show that in their hearts they know what is right and wrong, the same as the law commands, and their consciences agree. Sometimes their thoughts tell them that they have done wrong, and this makes them guilty. And sometimes their thoughts tell them that they have done right, and this makes them not guilty.
16 All this will happen on the day when God will judge people’s secret thoughts through Jesus Christ. This is part of the Good News that I tell everyone.
17 What about you? You say you are a Jew. You trust in the law and proudly claim to be close to God. 18 You know what God wants you to do. And you know what is important, because you have learned the law. 19 You think you are a guide for people who don’t know the right way, a light for those who are in the dark. 20 You think you can show foolish people what is right. And you think you are a teacher for those who are just beginning to learn. You have the law, and so you think you know everything and have all truth. 21 You teach others, so why don’t you teach yourself? You tell them not to steal, but you yourself steal. 22 You say they must not commit adultery, but you yourself are guilty of that sin. You hate idols, but you steal them from their temples. 23 You are so proud that you have God’s law, but you bring shame to God by breaking his law. 24 As the Scriptures say, “People in other nations insult God because of you.” [ a ]
25 If you follow the law, then your circumcision has meaning. But if you break the law, then it is as if you were never circumcised. 26 Those who are not Jews are not circumcised. But if they do what the law says, it is as if they were circumcised. 27 You have the written law and circumcision, but you break the law. So those who are not circumcised in their bodies, but still obey the law, will show that you are guilty.
28 You are not a true Jew if you are only a Jew in your physical body. True circumcision is not only on the outside of the body. 29 A true Jew is one who is a Jew inside. True circumcision is done in the heart. It is done by the Spirit, not by the written law. And anyone who is circumcised in the heart by the Spirit gets praise from God, not from people.
2 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.
3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?
22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?
23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?
28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
2 Therefore you have ( A ) no excuse, [ a ] you foolish person, ( B ) everyone of you who passes judgment; for [ b ] in that matter in which ( C ) you judge someone else, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2 And we know that the judgment of God [ c ] rightly falls upon those who practice such things. 3 But do you suppose this, [ d ] ( D ) you foolish person who passes judgment on those who practice such things, and yet does them as well , that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you think lightly of ( E ) the riches of His ( F ) kindness and [ e ] ( G ) restraint and ( H ) patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But [ f ] because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart ( I ) you are storing up wrath for yourself ( J ) on the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 ( K ) who will repay each person according to his deeds : 7 to those who by ( L ) perseverance in doing good seek ( M ) glory, honor, and ( N ) immortality, He will give ( O ) eternal life; 8 but to those who are ( P ) self-serving and ( Q ) do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, He will give wrath and indignation. 9 There will be ( R ) tribulation and distress [ g ] for every soul of mankind who does evil, [ h ] for the Jew ( S ) first and also [ i ] for the Greek, 10 but ( T ) glory, honor, and peace to everyone who does what is good, to the Jew ( U ) first and also to the Greek. 11 For ( V ) there is no partiality with God.
12 For all who have sinned [ j ] ( W ) without the Law will also perish [ k ] without the Law, and all who have sinned [ l ] under the Law will be judged [ m ] by the Law; 13 for it is ( X ) not the hearers [ n ] of the Law who are [ o ] righteous before God, but the doers [ p ] of the Law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles who do not have [ q ] the Law [ r ] ( Y ) instinctively perform the requirements of the Law, these, though not having [ s ] the Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they show ( Z ) the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, ( AA ) according to my gospel, ( AB ) God will judge the secrets of mankind through Christ Jesus.
17 But if you call yourself a [ t ] Jew and ( AC ) rely [ u ] upon the Law and boast in God, 18 and know His will and [ v ] ( AD ) distinguish the things that matter, being instructed from the Law, 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to people who are blind, a light to those in darkness, 20 a [ w ] corrector of the foolish, a teacher of [ x ] the immature, possessing in the Law ( AE ) the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth— 21 you , therefore, ( AF ) who teach someone else, do you not teach yourself? You who [ y ] preach that one is not to steal, do you steal? 22 You who say that one is not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who loathe idols, do you ( AG ) rob temples? 23 You who ( AH ) boast [ z ] in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? 24 For “ ( AI ) the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles ( AJ ) because of you ,” just as it is written.
25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you ( AK ) practice [ aa ] the Law; but if you are a violator [ ab ] of the Law, ( AL ) your circumcision has turned into uncircumcision. 26 ( AM ) So if ( AN ) the [ ac ] uncircumcised man ( AO ) keeps the requirements of the Law, will his uncircumcision not be regarded as circumcision? 27 And ( AP ) he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not ( AQ ) judge you who [ ad ] though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a violator [ ae ] of the Law? 28 For ( AR ) he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29 But ( AS ) he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and ( AT ) circumcision is of the heart, by the ( AU ) Spirit, not by the letter; ( AV ) and his praise is not from people, but from God.
2 You, therefore, have no excuse, ( A ) you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. ( B ) 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches ( C ) of his kindness, ( D ) forbearance ( E ) and patience, ( F ) not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? ( G )
5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath ( H ) , when his righteous judgment ( I ) will be revealed. 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” [ a ] ( J ) 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor ( K ) and immortality, ( L ) he will give eternal life. ( M ) 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, ( N ) there will be wrath and anger. ( O ) 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: ( P ) first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; ( Q ) 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. ( R ) 11 For God does not show favoritism. ( S )
12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law ( T ) will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey ( U ) the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, ( V ) they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets ( W ) through Jesus Christ, ( X ) as my gospel ( Y ) declares.
17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; ( Z ) 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? ( AA ) 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? ( AB ) 23 You who boast in the law, ( AC ) do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” [ b ] ( AD )
25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law, ( AE ) but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised. ( AF ) 26 So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, ( AG ) will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? ( AH ) 27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you ( AI ) who, even though you have the [ c ] written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.
28 A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, ( AJ ) nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. ( AK ) 29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, ( AL ) by the Spirit, ( AM ) not by the written code. ( AN ) Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God. ( AO )
