- Revelation Chapter 13
13 Then I saw a wild animal that was coming up out of the sea. [ a ] It had ten horns and there was a crown on each horn. The animal also had seven heads. On each head there was a bad name that insulted God. 2 The wild animal that I saw was like a leopard. But its feet were like a bear's feet and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. The dragon gave his own power and great authority to the wild animal so that it could rule as king.
3 Someone had hurt one of the wild animal's heads with a bad wound. It seemed that it would soon die. But the wound in the animal's head had become well again. This surprised all the people who were living on the earth. As a result, they were ready to obey what the wild animal said. 4 People worshipped the dragon because he had given his authority to the wild animal. They also worshipped the wild animal. They said, ‘Nobody is like this animal! Nobody is strong enough to fight against him!’
5 The wild animal received authority to rule people for 42 months. It could speak proud words and insult God. 6 So it started to speak against God. It insulted God's name and the place where he lives, as well as the people who live there in heaven. 7 It received power to fight a war against God's own people and to win against them. It received authority to rule over people from every nation, people from every tribe and people from every language. 8 Nearly all the people who live on the earth will worship the wild animal. But those people whose names are in the Lamb's book of life will not worship it. [ b ] The Lamb wrote the names of these believers in his book from the beginning of the world. He is the Lamb that people killed as a sacrifice.
9 Everyone who can understand should listen carefully to these words:
10 ‘If it is right for someone's enemy to catch him, that is what will happen.
If it is right for someone's enemy to kill him with a sword, that is what will happen.’
This means that God's people must be patient and strong. They must continue to trust God. [ c ]
11 Then I saw a second wild animal. This one was coming up out of the ground. [ d ] It had two horns like a lamb's horns. But it spoke like a dragon. 12 It worked for the first wild animal and it used the authority of the first wild animal. It made all the people on earth worship the first wild animal. That first animal was the one that someone had hurt very much. It seemed that it would soon die but it had become well again.
13 The second wild animal did great miracles. It even caused fire to come down from heaven to the earth, while people watched. 14 It used the authority of the first wild animal to do many miracles. In that way, it deceived the people who lived on the earth. It told them to make an image of the first wild animal. This was the animal that was still alive after a sword had given it a bad wound. 15 The second wild animal received power to give life to the image of the first wild animal. As a result, the image could speak. It said, ‘Anyone who refuses to worship me must die!’
16 The second wild animal also caused everyone to receive a mark. Everyone received a mark on their right hand or on the front of their head. This included important people and ordinary people, rich people and poor people, free people and slaves. 17 Nobody could buy anything unless they had this mark on them. Nor could they sell anything. This mark shows the wild animal's name or the number of its name.
18 You must think carefully so that you can understand this number. Anyone who is wise should try to understand what the wild animal's number means. It is a human number. The number is 666.
13 Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads. There was a crown on each of its horns. It had an evil name written on each head. 2 This beast looked like a leopard, with feet like a bear’s feet. It had a mouth like a lion’s mouth. The dragon gave the beast all of its power and its throne and great authority.
3 One of the heads of the beast looked as if it had been wounded and killed, but the death wound was healed. All the people in the world were amazed, and they all followed the beast. 4 People worshiped the dragon because it had given its power to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast. They asked, “Who is as powerful as the beast? Who can make war against it?”
5 The beast was allowed to boast and speak insults against God. It was allowed to use its power for 42 months. 6 The beast opened its mouth to insult God—to insult his name, the place where he lives, and all those who live in heaven. 7 It was given power to make war against God’s holy people and to defeat them. It was given power over every tribe, race of people, language, and nation. 8 Everyone living on earth would worship the beast. These are all the people since the beginning of the world whose names are not written in the Lamb’s book of life. The Lamb is the one who was killed.
9 Anyone who hears these things should listen to this:
10 Whoever is to be a prisoner,
will be a prisoner.
Whoever is to be killed with a sword,
will be killed with a sword.
This means that God’s holy people must have patience and faith.
11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he talked like a dragon. 12 This beast stood before the first beast and used the same power the first beast had. He used this power to make everyone living on the earth worship the first beast. The first beast was the one that had the death wound that was healed. 13 The second beast did great miracles. [ a ] He even made fire come down from heaven to earth while people were watching.
14 This second beast fooled the people living on earth by using the miracles that he had been given the power to do for the first beast. He ordered people to make an idol to honor the first beast, the one that was wounded by the sword but did not die. 15 The second beast was given power to give life to the idol of the first beast. Then the idol could speak and order all those who did not worship it to be killed. 16 The second beast also forced all people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to have a mark put on their right hand or on their forehead. 17 No one could buy or sell without this mark. (This mark is the name of the beast or the number of its name.)
18 Anyone who has understanding can find the meaning of the beast’s number. This requires wisdom. This number is the number of a man. It is 666.
13 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
13 And the dragon stood on the sand of the [ a ] seashore.
Then I saw a ( A ) beast coming up out of the sea, having ( B ) ten horns and ( C ) seven heads, and on his horns were ( D ) ten crowns, and on his heads were ( E ) blasphemous names. 2 And the beast that I saw was ( F ) like a leopard, and his feet were like those of ( G ) a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of ( H ) a lion. And the ( I ) dragon gave him his power and his ( J ) throne, and great authority. 3 I saw one of his heads as if it had been [ b ] fatally wounded, and his ( K ) fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth ( L ) was amazed and followed after the beast; 4 they worshiped the ( M ) dragon because he ( N ) gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “ ( O ) Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?” 5 A mouth was given to him ( P ) speaking [ c ] arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for ( Q ) forty-two months was given to him. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is , ( R ) those who dwell in heaven.
7 It was also given to him to ( S ) make war with the [ d ] saints and to overcome them, and authority was given to him over ( T ) every tribe, people, language, and nation. 8 All who ( U ) live on the earth will worship him, everyone ( V ) whose name has not been [ e ] written ( W ) since the foundation of the world in the ( X ) book of life of ( Y ) the Lamb who has been slaughtered. 9 ( Z ) If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 ( AA ) If anyone [ f ] is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; ( AB ) if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is ( AC ) the [ g ] perseverance and the faith of the [ h ] saints.
11 Then ( AD ) I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had ( AE ) two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a ( AF ) dragon. 12 He ( AG ) exercises all the authority of the first beast [ i ] ( AH ) in his presence. And he makes ( AI ) the earth and those who live on it ( AJ ) worship the first beast, whose ( AK ) fatal wound was healed. 13 He ( AL ) performs great signs, so that he even makes ( AM ) fire come down out of the sky to the earth in the presence of people. 14 And he ( AN ) deceives ( AO ) those who live on the earth because of ( AP ) the signs which it was given him to perform [ j ] ( AQ ) in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image to the beast who *had the ( AR ) wound of the sword and has come to life. 15 And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even [ k ] speak and cause ( AS ) all who do not ( AT ) worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 And he causes all, ( AU ) the small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, [ l ] to be given a ( AV ) mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 and he decrees that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the ( AW ) mark, either ( AX ) the name of the beast or ( AY ) the number of his name. 18 ( AZ ) Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that ( BA ) of a [ m ] man; and his number is [ n ] six hundred and sixty-six.
13 The dragon [ a ] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. ( A ) It had ten horns and seven heads, ( B ) with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. ( C ) 2 The beast I saw resembled a leopard, ( D ) but had feet like those of a bear ( E ) and a mouth like that of a lion. ( F ) The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. ( G ) 3 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. ( H ) The whole world was filled with wonder ( I ) and followed the beast. 4 People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like ( J ) the beast? Who can wage war against it?”
5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies ( K ) and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. ( L ) 6 It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. ( M ) 7 It was given power to wage war ( N ) against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. ( O ) 8 All inhabitants of the earth ( P ) will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, ( Q ) the Lamb ( R ) who was slain from the creation of the world. [ b ] ( S )
9 Whoever has ears, let them hear. ( T )
10 “If anyone is to go into captivity,
into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed [ c ] with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.” [ d ] ( U )
This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness ( V ) on the part of God’s people. ( W )
11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. ( X ) It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. ( Y ) 12 It exercised all the authority ( Z ) of the first beast on its behalf, ( AA ) and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, ( AB ) whose fatal wound had been healed. ( AC ) 13 And it performed great signs, ( AD ) even causing fire to come down from heaven ( AE ) to the earth in full view of the people. 14 Because of the signs ( AF ) it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived ( AG ) the inhabitants of the earth. ( AH ) It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. ( AI ) 15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship ( AJ ) the image to be killed. ( AK ) 16 It also forced all people, great and small, ( AL ) rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, ( AM ) 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, ( AN ) which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. ( AO )
18 This calls for wisdom. ( AP ) Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. [ e ] ( AQ ) That number is 666.
