BibleStudyIt Psalm 94
- Psalm Chapter 94
94 Lord , you are the God
who punishes guilty people.
God, show your power
to punish people as they deserve! [ a ]
2 Judge of all people on the earth, do something!
Punish proud people as they deserve!
3 How long will wicked people continue to be happy?
Yes, Lord , how long?
4 Those people who do evil things
speak many proud words.
They boast about how great they are.
5 Lord , see how they hurt your own people.
They are cruel to the people that belong to you.
6 They kill widows
and foreign people who live in our land.
They murder children that have no family.
7 They say, ‘The Lord does not see us.
Israel's God does not see what we are doing.’
8 Think again, all you fools among the people!
Stupid people, become wise!
9 God made our ears!
Can he himself not hear?
He made our eyes!
Does he not see?
10 He teaches the nations what is right.
Will he not punish you,
when you do what is wrong?
He teaches people what they should know.
11 The Lord knows what people think.
He knows that their thoughts are empty.
12 Lord , when you teach people what is right,
you have really blessed them.
You use your Law to teach them.
13 When those people have troubles,
you keep them safe.
Then the wicked people fall into a deep hole
that you have dug to catch them.
14 The Lord will not leave his people alone.
He will not forget to help the people that belong to him.
15 Once again, judges will do what is right and fair,
and good, honest people will agree.
16 Who would fight for me
against the wicked people? [ b ]
Who would keep me safe
from the people who do evil things?
17 Unless the Lord had helped me,
I would soon have become silent in death.
18 When I think, ‘I am falling down,’
your faithful love keeps me safe, Lord .
19 When I have troubles in my mind,
so that I am afraid,
you help me to be happy again.
20 You will not become a friend of cruel rulers.
They make laws that only hurt people.
21 They join together to work against good people.
They say that people are guilty
who have done nothing wrong.
They say that they must die.
22 But the Lord is a strong place for me.
Yes, my God is a rock
where I can hide and be safe.
23 He will punish those wicked leaders.
He will destroy them,
because they do evil things.
The Lord our God will completely destroy them.
94 The Lord is a God who punishes people.
God, come punish them.
2 You are the judge of the whole earth.
Give proud people the punishment they deserve.
3 Lord , how long will the wicked have their fun?
How much longer?
4 How much longer will those criminals
brag about the evil they did?
5 Lord , they hurt your people
and make them suffer.
6 They kill widows and foreigners living in our country.
They murder orphans.
7 And they say the Lord does not see them doing these evil things!
They say the God of Jacob does not know what is happening.
8 You evil people are foolish.
When will you learn your lesson?
You are so stupid!
You must try to understand.
9 God made our ears,
so surely he can hear what is happening!
He made our eyes,
so surely he can see you!
10 The one who disciplines nations will surely correct you.
He is the one who teaches us everything.
11 The Lord knows what people are thinking.
He knows that their thoughts are like a puff of wind.
12 Lord , great blessings belong to those you discipline,
to those you teach from your law.
13 You help them stay calm when trouble comes.
You will help them until the wicked are put in their graves.
14 The Lord will not leave his people.
He will not leave them without help.
15 Justice will return and bring fairness.
And those who want to do right will be there to see it.
16 No one helped me fight against the wicked.
No one stood with me against those who do evil.
17 And if the Lord had not helped me,
I would have been silenced by death.
18 I know I was ready to fall,
but, Lord , your faithful love supported me.
19 I was very worried and upset,
but you comforted me and made me happy!
20 You don’t help crooked judges.
They use the law to make life hard for the people.
21 They attack those who do right.
They say innocent people are guilty and put them to death.
22 But the Lord is my place of safety, high on the mountain.
God, my Rock, is my safe place!
23 He will punish those evil judges for the bad things they did.
He will destroy them because they sinned.
The Lord our God will destroy them.
94 O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.
2 Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.
3 Lord , how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?
4 How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?
5 They break in pieces thy people, O Lord , and afflict thine heritage.
6 They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
7 Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.
8 Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?
9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?
11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
12 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord , and teachest him out of thy law;
13 That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.
15 But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it.
16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
17 Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.
18 When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord , held me up.
19 In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
20 Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?
21 They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.
22 But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.
23 And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.
94 Lord , God of [ a ] ( A ) vengeance,
God of [ b ] vengeance, [ c ] ( B ) shine forth!
2 ( C ) Rise up, ( D ) Judge of the earth,
Pay back retribution ( E ) to the proud.
3 How long, Lord , shall the wicked—
How long shall the ( F ) wicked triumph?
4 They pour out words , they ( G ) speak arrogantly;
All who do injustice ( H ) boast.
5 They ( I ) crush Your people, Lord ,
And ( J ) afflict Your inheritance.
6 They ( K ) kill the widow and the stranger
And murder the orphans.
7 ( L ) They have said, “ [ d ] The Lord does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob perceive.”
8 Pay attention, you ( M ) stupid ones among the people;
And when will you understand, ( N ) foolish ones?
9 He who ( O ) planted the ear, [ e ] does He not hear?
Or He who formed the eye, [ f ] does He not see?
10 He who [ g ] ( P ) disciplines the nations, will He not rebuke,
He who ( Q ) teaches mankind knowledge?
11 The Lord ( R ) knows human thoughts,
[ h ] That they are mere breath.
12 Blessed is the man whom ( S ) You discipline, [ i ] Lord ,
And ( T ) whom You teach from Your Law,
13 So that You may grant him ( U ) relief from the ( V ) days of adversity,
Until ( W ) a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For ( X ) the Lord will not abandon His people,
Nor will He ( Y ) abandon His inheritance.
15 For [ j ] ( Z ) judgment [ k ] will again be righteous,
And all the upright in heart [ l ] will follow it.
16 Who will ( AA ) stand up for me against evildoers?
Who will take his stand for me ( AB ) against those who do injustice?
17 If ( AC ) the Lord had not been my help,
My soul would soon have dwelt in the land of silence.
18 If I should say, “ ( AD ) My foot has slipped,”
Your faithfulness, Lord , will support me.
19 When my anxious thoughts [ m ] multiply within me,
Your ( AE ) comfort delights my soul.
20 Can a [ n ] ( AF ) throne of destruction be allied with You,
One ( AG ) which devises [ o ] mischief by decree?
21 They ( AH ) band themselves together against the [ p ] life of the righteous
And ( AI ) condemn [ q ] the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord has been my ( AJ ) refuge,
And my God the ( AK ) rock of my refuge.
23 He has ( AL ) brought back their injustice upon them,
And He will [ r ] ( AM ) destroy them in their evil;
The Lord our God will [ s ] destroy them.
1 The Lord is a God who avenges. ( A )
O God who avenges, shine forth. ( B )
2 Rise up, ( C ) Judge ( D ) of the earth;
pay back ( E ) to the proud what they deserve.
3 How long, Lord , will the wicked,
how long will the wicked be jubilant? ( F )
4 They pour out arrogant ( G ) words;
all the evildoers are full of boasting. ( H )
5 They crush your people, ( I ) Lord ;
they oppress your inheritance. ( J )
6 They slay the widow ( K ) and the foreigner;
they murder the fatherless. ( L )
7 They say, “The Lord does not see; ( M )
the God of Jacob ( N ) takes no notice.”
8 Take notice, you senseless ones ( O ) among the people;
you fools, when will you become wise?
9 Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?
Does he who formed the eye not see? ( P )
10 Does he who disciplines ( Q ) nations not punish?
Does he who teaches ( R ) mankind lack knowledge?
11 The Lord knows all human plans; ( S )
he knows that they are futile. ( T )
12 Blessed is the one you discipline, ( U ) Lord ,
the one you teach ( V ) from your law;
13 you grant them relief from days of trouble, ( W )
till a pit ( X ) is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not reject his people; ( Y )
he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, ( Z )
and all the upright in heart ( AA ) will follow it.
16 Who will rise up ( AB ) for me against the wicked?
Who will take a stand for me against evildoers? ( AC )
17 Unless the Lord had given me help, ( AD )
I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. ( AE )
18 When I said, “My foot is slipping, ( AF ) ”
your unfailing love, Lord , supported me.
19 When anxiety ( AG ) was great within me,
your consolation ( AH ) brought me joy.
20 Can a corrupt throne ( AI ) be allied with you—
a throne that brings on misery by its decrees? ( AJ )
21 The wicked band together ( AK ) against the righteous
and condemn the innocent ( AL ) to death. ( AM )
22 But the Lord has become my fortress,
and my God the rock ( AN ) in whom I take refuge. ( AO )
23 He will repay ( AP ) them for their sins
and destroy ( AQ ) them for their wickedness;
the Lord our God will destroy them.
