A prayer of Moses, God's servant.

God lives for ever! [ a ]

90 Lord, from long ago,
you have always been a safe home for us. [ b ]
2 From before the mountains began,
and before you made the world,
you were already there, as God.
You have no beginning and no end.
3 People return to dust in the ground when they die.
You say, ‘Become dust again, you people.’ [ c ]
4 For you, a thousand years is only a short time.
They pass as quickly as a day for you,
or just a few hours in the night.
5 You cause people's lives to end,
as a dream finishes when you wake up.
People are like grass that appears in the morning.
6 During the morning, it grows well.
By the evening,
it becomes dry and it dies.
7 Your anger destroys us,
and we become very afraid.
8 All our sins are there for you to see.
You even see the sins that we have tried to hide.
9 Your anger gives us trouble all through our lives.
Then our lives end in a short groan.
10 The number of our days make 70 years,
or maybe 80 years if we are strong enough.
But even in the best years of our lives,
we have trouble and pain.
Our lives quickly pass,
and we hurry towards death.
11 Lord , nobody knows all the power of your anger.
It is your anger that causes people to be afraid of you.
12 Teach us to count carefully the days of our short lives.
Then we will be wise in how we live.
13 Lord , return to help us!
How long will you be angry with us?
Please be kind to us, your servants!
14 Show your faithful love to us every morning.
Then we will sing with joy,
and we will be happy for as long as we live.
15 For many years you have sent trouble to us.
Now, please make us happy
for as many years as you have given us pain.
16 Do great things again,
so that we, your servants, see them!
Let our children see that you rule as King!
17 Yes, may the Lord our God bless us.
May everything that we do go well!
Yes, may everything go well!

  1. 90:1 These are words that Moses prayed. This psalm makes us think of Genesis 3 and Deuteronomy 32 . We learn about God (verses 1-2) and about people (verses 3-6). We learn that God is angry when we do wrong things (verses 7-11), so we should be careful in how we live our short lives (verses 12-17).

Book 4

(Psalms 90-106)

The prayer of Moses, the man of God.

90 My Lord, you have been our home forever and ever.
2 You were God before the mountains were born,
before the earth and the world were made.
You have always been and will always be God!

3 You bring people into this world,
and you change them into dust again.
4 To you, a thousand years is like yesterday,
like a few hours in the night.
5 Our life is like a dream that ends when morning comes.
We are like grass
6 that grows and looks so fresh in the morning,
but in the evening it is dry and dying.
7 Your anger could destroy us.
Your anger frightens us!
8 You know about all our sins.
You see every one of our secret sins.
9 Your anger can end our life.
Our lives fade away like a whisper.
10 We live about 70 years
or, if we are strong, 80 years.
But most of them are filled with hard work and pain.
Then, suddenly, the years are gone, and we fly away.
11 No one really knows the full power of your anger,
but our fear and respect for you is as great as your anger.
12 Teach us how short our lives are
so that we can become wise.
13 Lord , come back to us.
Be kind to your servants.
14 Fill us with your love every morning.
Let us be happy and enjoy our lives.
15 For years you have made life hard for us and have given us many troubles.
Now make us happy for just as long.
16 Let your servants see the wonderful things you can do for them.
And let their children see your glory.
17 Lord, our God, be kind to us.
Make everything we do successful.
Yes, make it all successful.

90 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

3 Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.

4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

6 In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

7 For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.

8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

9 For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.

10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.

12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

13 Return, O Lord , how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.

16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.

17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

BOOK 4

God’s Eternity and the Brevity of Human Life.

A Prayer of [ a ] Moses, the man of God.

90 Lord, You have been our [ b ] ( A ) dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before ( B ) the mountains were born
[ c ] Or You ( C ) gave birth to the earth and the world,
Even ( D ) from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

3 You ( E ) turn mortals back into dust
And say, “Return, you sons of mankind.”
4 For ( F ) a thousand years in Your sight
Are like ( G ) yesterday when it passes by,
[ d ] Or like a ( H ) watch in the night.
5 You ( I ) have [ e ] swept them away like a flood, they [ f ] ( J ) fall asleep;
In the morning they are like ( K ) grass that [ g ] sprouts anew.
6 In the morning it ( L ) flourishes and [ h ] sprouts anew;
Toward evening it ( M ) wilts and ( N ) withers away.

7 For we have been ( O ) consumed by Your anger,
And we have been terrified by Your wrath.
8 You have ( P ) placed our guilty deeds before You,
Our ( Q ) hidden sins in the light of Your presence.
9 For ( R ) all our days have dwindled away in Your fury;
We have finished our years like a [ i ] sigh.
10 As for the days of our [ j ] life, [ k ] they contain seventy years,
Or if due to strength, ( S ) eighty years,
Yet their pride is only ( T ) trouble and tragedy;
For it quickly passes, and we ( U ) disappear.
11 Who [ l ] understands the ( V ) power of Your anger
And Your fury, according to the ( W ) fear [ m ] that is due You?
12 So ( X ) teach us to number our days,
That we may [ n ] ( Y ) present to You a heart of wisdom.

13 Do ( Z ) return, Lord ; ( AA ) how long will it be ?
And [ o ] be ( AB ) sorry for Your servants.
14 ( AC ) Satisfy us in the morning with Your graciousness,
That we may ( AD ) sing for joy and rejoice all our days.
15 ( AE ) Make us glad [ p ] according to the days You have afflicted us,
And the ( AF ) years we have seen [ q ] evil.
16 Let Your ( AG ) work appear to Your servants
And Your ( AH ) majesty [ r ] to their children.
17 May the ( AI ) kindness of the Lord our God be upon us;
And [ s ] ( AJ ) confirm for us the work of our hands;
Yes, [ t ] confirm the work of our hands.

Psalm 90

A prayer of Moses the man of God.

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place ( A )
throughout all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born ( B )
or you brought forth the whole world,
from everlasting to everlasting ( C ) you are God. ( D )

3 You turn people back to dust,
saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.” ( E )
4 A thousand years in your sight
are like a day that has just gone by,
or like a watch in the night. ( F )
5 Yet you sweep people away ( G ) in the sleep of death—
they are like the new grass of the morning:
6 In the morning it springs up new,
but by evening it is dry and withered. ( H )

7 We are consumed by your anger
and terrified by your indignation.
8 You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins ( I ) in the light of your presence. ( J )
9 All our days pass away under your wrath;
we finish our years with a moan. ( K )
10 Our days may come to seventy years, ( L )
or eighty, ( M ) if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, ( N )
for they quickly pass, and we fly away. ( O )
11 If only we knew the power of your anger!
Your wrath ( P ) is as great as the fear that is your due. ( Q )
12 Teach us to number our days, ( R )
that we may gain a heart of wisdom. ( S )

13 Relent, Lord ! How long ( T ) will it be?
Have compassion on your servants. ( U )
14 Satisfy ( V ) us in the morning with your unfailing love, ( W )
that we may sing for joy ( X ) and be glad all our days. ( Y )
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16 May your deeds be shown to your servants,
your splendor to their children. ( Z )

17 May the favor [ a ] of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands. ( AA )
