This is a song that David wrote.

The leader must use the music ‘Death of the son.’

A song to thank God [ a ]

9 A ll that I am says ‘thank you’ to the Lord .
I will tell people about all the great things that you have done.
2 I will be very happy because of you.
I will sing to praise your name, Most High God.
3 B ecause my enemies have seen your power,
they turned back and they fell down.
You won against them.
4 You showed that I was right.
You sat on your throne
as a judge who truly decides what is right.
5 C learly you spoke against the nations.
You destroyed the wicked people,
so that nobody will remember them ever again.
6 D own came the cities of our enemies!
You destroyed them for ever.
People will just forget them.
7 E very day the Lord will rule as king.
He sits on his throne as judge.
8 He is fair when he judges all the people in the world.
He brings justice to all the nations.
9 F or people who suffer, the Lord gives them a safe place.
When trouble comes to them, he keeps them safe.
10 Everyone who knows you, Lord , trusts in you.
You will never turn away from anyone who comes to you for help.
11 G ive a song to the Lord to praise him!
He rules as king in Zion.
Tell all the nations about the great things that he has done.
12 God punishes murderers,
and he takes care of people who receive pain from others.
When they call to him,
he does not refuse to help them.
13 H ow my enemies cause me to suffer!
Please be kind to me, Lord .
You are the one who can save me from death.
14 Then I will praise you for everyone to hear!
I will tell the people of Zion that you have saved me,
and I will be very happy!
15 I nto the deep hole that they dug,
the nations themselves fell.
The net that they hid to catch me,
caught their own feet!
16 The Lord has shown us who he is.
We know that he brings justice.
Wicked people will catch themselves
in their own traps.
Higgaion. [ b ] Selah.
17 J ustice sends the wicked people away,
into the deep hole of death.
This will happen to all the nations
that do not respect God.
18 K now this: God will not forget the poor for ever.
People who suffer should continue to hope.
19 Lord , stand up!
Do not let people turn against you!
Bring the nations to stand in front of you.
Judge them!
20 Lord , make them afraid!
Make the nations know
that they are only weak and human.
Selah.

Footnotes

  1. 9:1 David probably wrote Psalms 9 and 10 as one psalm. In the Hebrew language, each verse started with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet. In Psalm 10 not all the letters are there. We have used English letters here.
  2. 9:16 This word means a place for happy music.

[ a ] To the director: Use the Alamoth of Ben. [ b ] A song of David.

9 I will praise you, Lord , with all my heart.
I will tell about the wonderful things you have done.
2 You make me happy, so I will rejoice in you.
God Most High, I praise your name.
3 My enemies turned to run from you,
but they fell and were destroyed.

4 You listened to me from your throne like a good judge,
and you decided that I was right.
5 You told the nations how wrong they were.
You destroyed those evil people.
You erased their names from our memory forever and ever.
6 The enemy is finished!
You destroyed their cities.
There is nothing left to remind us of them.

7 The Lord set up his throne to bring justice,
and he will rule forever.
8 He judges everyone on earth fairly.
He judges all nations honestly.
9 Many people are suffering—
crushed by the weight of their troubles.
But the Lord is a refuge for them,
a safe place they can run to.

10 Lord , those who know your name
come to you for protection.
And when they come,
you do not leave them without help.

11 Sing praises to the Lord , who sits as King in Zion. [ c ]
Tell the nations about the great things he has done.
12 He punishes murderers
and remembers those who are in need.
When suffering people cry for help,
he does not ignore them.

13 I said this prayer: “ Lord , be kind to me.
See how my enemies are hurting me.
Save me from the ‘gates of death.’
14 Then, at the gates of Jerusalem, [ d ] I can sing praises to you.
I will be so happy because you saved me.”

15 Those other nations have fallen into the pit they dug to catch others.
They have been caught in their own trap.
16 The Lord showed that he judges fairly.
The wicked were caught by what they did to hurt others. Higgayon [ e ] Selah

17 The wicked will go to the place of death,
as will all the nations that forget God.
18 It may seem that those who are poor and needy have been forgotten,
but God will not forget them.
He will not leave them without hope.

19 Lord , get up [ f ] and judge the nations.
Don’t let anyone think they can win against you.
20 Teach them a lesson, Lord .
Let them know they are only human. Selah

  1. Psalm 9:1 Psalm 9 In many Hebrew copies and in the ancient Greek version, Psalms 9 and 10 are combined as one psalm.
  2. Psalm 9:1 Psalm 9 Alamoth of Ben This might be the name of a tune, “On the Death of the Son,” a music style, or one of the orchestral groups in the Temple. See 1 Chron. 15:20.
  3. Psalm 9:11 Sing … Zion Or “Inhabitants of Zion, sing praises to the Lord .” See “ Zion ” in the Word List.
  4. Psalm 9:14 Jerusalem Literally, “daughter Zion.” See “ Zion ” in the Word List.
  5. Psalm 9:16 Higgayon Or “Meditation.” Together with Selah this may mean a time to pause and think quietly.
  6. Psalm 9:19 Lord , get up The people said this when they lifted the Box of the Agreement and took it into battle, showing that God was with them. See Num. 10:35-36. Also in Ps. 10:12.

9 I will praise thee, O Lord , with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.

2 I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.

3 When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence.

4 For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right.

5 Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.

6 O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities; their memorial is perished with them.

7 But the Lord shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment.

8 And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

9 The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord , hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

11 Sing praises to the Lord , which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings.

12 When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble.

13 Have mercy upon me, O Lord ; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death:

14 That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion: I will rejoice in thy salvation.

15 The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.

16 The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.

19 Arise, O Lord ; let not man prevail: let the heathen be judged in thy sight.

20 Put them in fear, O Lord : that the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah.

Thanksgiving for God’s Justice.

For the music director; on [ a ] Muth-labben. A Psalm of David.

I will ( B ) tell of all Your [ b ] wonders.
2 I will rejoice and be ( C ) jubilant in You;
I will ( D ) sing praise to Your name, O ( E ) Most High.

3 When my enemies turn back,
They stumble and ( F ) perish before You.
4 For You have ( G ) maintained [ c ] my just cause;
You have sat on the throne [ d ] ( H ) judging righteously.
5 You have ( I ) rebuked the nations, You have eliminated the wicked;
You have ( J ) wiped out their name forever and ever.
6 [ e ] The enemy has come to an end in everlasting ruins,
And You have uprooted the cities;
The very ( K ) memory of them has perished.

7 But the ( L ) Lord [ f ] sits as King forever;
He has established His ( M ) throne for judgment,
8 And He will ( N ) judge the world in righteousness;
He will execute judgment for the peoples fairly.
9 [ g ] The Lord will also be a ( O ) stronghold for the oppressed,

( S ) Declare His deeds among the peoples.
12 For ( T ) He who [ i ] requires blood remembers them;
He does not forget ( U ) the cry of the needy.
13 Be gracious to me, Lord ;
See my oppression from those ( V ) who hate me,
You who ( W ) lift me up from the gates of death,
14 So that I may tell of ( X ) all Your praises,
That in the gates of the daughter of Zion
I may ( Y ) rejoice in Your [ j ] salvation.
15 The nations have sunk down ( Z ) into the pit which they have made;
In the ( AA ) net which they hid, their own foot has been caught.
16 The Lord has ( AB ) made Himself known;
He has ( AC ) executed judgment.
A wicked one is ensnared in the work of his own hands. [ k ] Higgaion Selah

All the nations who ( AE ) forget God.
18 For the ( AF ) needy will not always be forgotten,
Nor the ( AG ) hope of the afflicted perish forever.
