This psalm is a song that the sons of Korah wrote.

God's holy city [ a ]

87 The Lord built his city on the holy mountain.
2 The Lord loves Zion city,
more than any other place where Jacob's family lives. [ b ]
3 People say great things about you!
You are God's own city!
Selah.
4 I will speak about the nations that serve God.
Rahab and Babylon are now among them,
also Philistia, Tyre and Ethiopia. [ c ]
They say about themselves,
‘This man was born in Zion.’
5 They say this about Zion:
‘Each one of these people was born there.’
It is the Most High God who makes that city strong.
6 The Lord will write a list of all their names.
For the people from different nations,
he will say, ‘This person was born in Zion.’
Selah.
7 The singers and the musicians will say,
‘All our blessings come from you, Zion.’

  1. 87:1 This psalm is about Zion, God's special home. Zion was the name of the hill on which King Solomon built the temple. The writer looks ahead to a time when people from many nations will worship God. Then they will belong to God's city, as God's people. They will say, ‘I was born there.’
  2. 87:2 Jacob's family means the Israelite people.
  3. 87:4 Rahab is another name for Egypt.

A song of praise from the Korah family.

87 The Lord built his city on the holy hills.
2 He loves the gates of Zion more than any other place in Israel.
3 Wonderful things are said about you, City of God. Selah

4 God says, “Some of my people live in Egypt [ a ] and Babylon.
Some of them were born in Philistia, Tyre, and even Ethiopia.”
5 But about Zion he says,
“I know each and every person born there.”
It is the city built by God Most High.
6 The Lord keeps a list of all his people,
and he knows where each of them was born. Selah

7 At the festivals, people will dance and sing,
“All good things come from Zion.”

  1. Psalm 87:4 Egypt Literally, “Rahab.” This name means the “Dragon.” It became a popular name for Egypt.

3 Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah.

4 I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.

5 And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her.

6 The Lord shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah.

7 As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.

More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob.
3 ( C ) Glorious things are spoken of you,
( D ) City of God. Selah
4 “I shall mention [ a ] ( E ) Rahab and Babylon [ b ] among those who know Me;
Behold, Philistia and ( F ) Tyre with [ c ] ( G ) Cush:
‘This one was born there.’”
5 But of Zion it will be said, “This one and that one were born in her”;
And the Most High Himself will ( H ) establish her.
6 The Lord will count when He ( I ) registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah
7 Then those who ( J ) sing as well as those who [ d ] ( K ) play the flutes will say ,
“All my ( L ) springs of joy are in you.”

Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm. A song.

1 He has founded his city on the holy mountain. ( A )
2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion ( B )
more than all the other dwellings of Jacob.

3 Glorious things are said of you,
city of God: [ a ] ( C )
4 “I will record Rahab [ b ] ( D ) and Babylon
among those who acknowledge me—
Philistia ( E ) too, and Tyre ( F ) , along with Cush [ c ] —
and will say, ‘This one was born in Zion.’” [ d ] ( G )
5 Indeed, of Zion it will be said,
“This one and that one were born in her,
and the Most High himself will establish her.”
6 The Lord will write in the register ( H ) of the peoples:
“This one was born in Zion.”

7 As they make music ( I ) they will sing,
“All my fountains ( J ) are in you.”
