This psalm is a song that Asaph wrote.

Israel's enemies

83 God, do not continue to be silent!
Do not remain quiet.
Please do something!
2 Look! Your enemies are causing trouble.
The people who hate you are ready to attack.
3 They decide carefully how they will attack your people.
They want to hurt the people that you love.
4 They say, ‘Come now! We will destroy them.
They will no longer be a nation.
Nobody will remember the name of Israel any more.’
5 They agree together what they will do.
They join one another to fight against you.
6 Those enemies are Edomites and Ishmaelites,
Moabites and Hagrites.
7 They also come from Gebal, Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia and Tyre.
8 Even the Assyrian army has joined with them.
They have given strength to Lot's descendants,
the Moabites and the Ammonites.
Selah.
9 God, punish them as you punished Midian.
Do what you did to Sisera and Jabin at the River Kishon. [ a ]
10 You destroyed them at Endor.
Their bodies remained on the ground, like dirt.
11 Do to their leaders
what you did to Oreb and Zeeb.
Let their rulers die,
like Zebah and Zalmunna. [ b ]
12 Those people said,
‘Let us take God's valuable country for ourselves!’
13 God, blow them away like dust,
like chaff that blows away in the wind!
14 Go after them,
like a fire that burns both forest and mountains.
15 Chase them away with your storms.
Frighten them with your strong winds.
16 Cause them to be very ashamed, Lord ,
so that they might turn to you.
17 May they always be ashamed and frightened.
Let them die with shame! [ c ]
18 Then they will understand that you are the Lord .
They will know that you are the Most High God
who rules over all the earth.

Footnotes

  1. 83:9 Jabin was king of Hazor. Sisera was the leader of his army. A woman (Jael) killed Sisera as he hid in her tent. Two leaders of Israel destroyed Jabin's army at the River Kishon. See Judges 4:1-24 .
  2. 83:11 Oreb and Zeeb were rulers in Midian. People from Ephraim killed them. See Judges 7:24-25 . Gideon killed Zebah and Zalmunna. See Judges 8:21 . They were kings of Midian.
  3. 83:17 The writer wants Israel's enemies to turn to God when they see his power. But he knows that this may not happen. So he prays that God will punish them if they do not turn to worship him.

One of Asaph’s songs of praise.

83 God, don’t keep quiet!
Don’t close your ears!
Please say something, God.
2 Your enemies are getting ready to do something.
Those who hate you will soon attack.
3 They are making secret plans against your people.
Your enemies are discussing plans against the people you love.
4 They say, “Come, let us destroy them completely.
Then no one will ever again remember the name Israel.”
5 God, they have all joined together.
They have united against you.
6-7 Their army includes the Edomites, Ishmaelites, Moabites, and Hagar’s descendants,
the people of Byblos, Ammon, and Amalek,
the Philistines, and the people of Tyre.
8 Even the Assyrians have joined them.
They have made Lot’s descendants very powerful. Selah

9 God, defeat them just as you defeated Midian.
Do what you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River.
10 You destroyed the enemy at Endor,
and their bodies rotted on the ground.
11 Punish their leaders as you did Oreb and Zeeb.
Do what you did to Zebah and Zalmunna.
12 They said, “Let’s make this land our own—
these fields of grass that belong to God!”
13 Make them like weeds blown by the wind.
Scatter them the way wind scatters straw.
14 Be like a fire that destroys a forest
or like a flame that sets the hills on fire.
15 Chase them away with your blasts of wind;
frighten them with your storms.
16 Lord , cover them with shame
until they come to you for help.
17 May they be forever ashamed and afraid.
Disgrace and defeat them.
18 Then they will know that your name is Yahweh
that you alone are the Lord .
They will know that you are God Most High,
ruler over all the earth!

83 Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.

2 For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.

3 They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.

4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

5 For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:

6 The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes;

7 Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;

8 Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.

9 Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison:

10 Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth.

11 Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna:

12 Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession.

13 O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind.

14 As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire;

15 So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.

16 Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O Lord .

17 Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:

18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah , art the most high over all the earth.

God Implored to Confound His Enemies.

A Song, a Psalm of Asaph.

83 God, ( A ) do not remain quiet;
( B ) Do not be silent and, God, do not be still.
2 For behold, Your enemies ( C ) make an uproar,
And ( D ) those who hate You have [ a ] ( E ) exalted themselves.
3 They ( F ) make shrewd plans against Your people,
And [ b ] conspire together against ( G ) Your [ c ] treasured ones.
4 They have said, “Come, and ( H ) let’s wipe them out [ d ] as a nation,
So that the ( I ) name of Israel will no longer be remembered.”
5 For they have [ e ] ( J ) conspired together with one mind;
They make a covenant against You:
6 The tents of ( K ) Edom and the ( L ) Ishmaelites,
( M ) Moab and the ( N ) Hagrites;
7 ( O ) Gebal, ( P ) Ammon, and ( Q ) Amalek,
( R ) Philistia with the inhabitants of ( S ) Tyre;
8 ( T ) Assyria also has joined them;
They have become [ f ] a help to the ( U ) children of Lot. Selah

9 Deal with them ( V ) as with Midian,
As ( W ) with Sisera and Jabin at the river of Kishon,
10 Who were destroyed at En-dor,
Who ( X ) became like dung for the ground.
11 Make their nobles like ( Y ) Oreb and Zeeb,
And all their leaders like ( Z ) Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 Who said, “ ( AA ) Let’s possess for ourselves
The ( AB ) pastures of God.”

13 My God, make them like the [ g ] ( AC ) whirling dust,
Like ( AD ) chaff before the wind.
14 Like ( AE ) fire that burns the forest,
And like a flame that ( AF ) sets the mountains on fire,
15 So pursue them ( AG ) with Your heavy gale,
And terrify them with Your storm.
16 ( AH ) Fill their faces with dishonor,
So that they will seek Your name, Lord .
17 May they be ( AI ) ashamed and dismayed forever,
And may they be humiliated and perish,
18 So that they will ( AJ ) know that ( AK ) You alone, whose name is the Lord ,
Are the ( AL ) Most High over all the earth.

Psalm 83 [ a ]

A song. A psalm of Asaph.

1 O God, do not remain silent; ( A )
do not turn a deaf ear,
do not stand aloof, O God.
2 See how your enemies growl, ( B )
how your foes rear their heads. ( C )
3 With cunning they conspire ( D ) against your people;
they plot against those you cherish. ( E )
4 “Come,” they say, “let us destroy ( F ) them as a nation, ( G )
so that Israel’s name is remembered ( H ) no more.”

5 With one mind they plot together; ( I )
they form an alliance against you—
6 the tents of Edom ( J ) and the Ishmaelites,
of Moab ( K ) and the Hagrites, ( L )
7 Byblos, ( M ) Ammon ( N ) and Amalek, ( O )
Philistia, ( P ) with the people of Tyre. ( Q )
8 Even Assyria ( R ) has joined them
to reinforce Lot’s descendants. [ b ] ( S )

9 Do to them as you did to Midian, ( T )
as you did to Sisera ( U ) and Jabin ( V ) at the river Kishon, ( W )
10 who perished at Endor ( X )
and became like dung ( Y ) on the ground.
11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, ( Z )
all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, ( AA )
12 who said, “Let us take possession ( AB )
of the pasturelands of God.”

13 Make them like tumbleweed, my God,
like chaff ( AC ) before the wind.
14 As fire consumes the forest
or a flame sets the mountains ablaze, ( AD )
15 so pursue them with your tempest ( AE )
and terrify them with your storm. ( AF )
16 Cover their faces with shame, ( AG ) Lord ,
so that they will seek your name.

17 May they ever be ashamed and dismayed; ( AH )
may they perish in disgrace. ( AI )
18 Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord ( AJ )
that you alone are the Most High ( AK ) over all the earth. ( AL )
