81 Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.

² Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.

³ Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

⁴ For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.

⁵ This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.

⁶ I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots.

⁷ Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.

⁸ Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;

⁹ There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.

¹⁰ I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

¹¹ But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.

¹² So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

¹³ Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!

¹⁴ I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.

¹⁵ The haters of the Lord should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.

¹⁶ He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.

81 Be happy and sing to God, our strength.
Shout with joy to the God of Jacob.
² Begin the music.
Play the tambourines.
Play the pleasant harps and lyres.
³ Blow the ram’s horn at the time of the new moon ^{[ a ]}
and at the time of the full moon, ^{[ b ]} when our festival begins.
⁴ This is the law for the people of Israel.
The God of Jacob gave the command.
⁵ God made this agreement with Joseph’s people,
when he led them out of Egypt.
In a language we didn’t understand, God said,
⁶ “I took the load from your shoulder.
I let you drop the worker’s basket.
⁷ When you were in trouble, you called for help, and I set you free.
I was hidden in the storm clouds, and I answered you.
I tested you by the water at Meribah. ^{[ c ]} ” Selah

⁸ “My people, I am warning you.
Israel, listen to me!
⁹ Don’t worship any of the false gods
that the foreigners worship.
¹⁰ I, the Lord , am your God.
I brought you out of Egypt.
Israel, open your mouth,
and I will feed you.

¹¹ “But my people did not listen to me.
Israel did not obey me.
¹² So I let them go their own stubborn way
and do whatever they wanted.
¹³ If my people would listen to me
and would live the way I want,
¹⁴ then I would defeat their enemies.
I would punish those who cause them trouble.
¹⁵ Those who hate the Lord would shake with fear.
They would be punished forever.
¹⁶ I would give the best wheat to my people.
I would give them the purest honey, until they were satisfied.”

Psalm 81:3 new moon The first day of the Hebrew month. There were special meetings on these days when the people shared fellowship offerings as part of their worship to God.
Psalm 81:3 full moon The middle of the Hebrew month. Many of the special meetings and festivals started at the time of a full moon.

The pleasant harp with the psaltery.
³ Blow the trumpet at the new moon,
At the full moon, on our feast-day.
⁴ For it is a statute for Israel,
An ordinance of the God of Jacob.
⁵ He appointed it in Joseph for a testimony,
When he went out ^{[ b ]} over the land of Egypt,
Where I heard ^{[ c ]} a language that I knew not.

His hands were freed from the basket.

That they might walk in their own counsels.
¹³ Oh that my people would hearken unto me,
That Israel would walk in my ways!
¹⁴ I would soon subdue their enemies,
And turn my hand against their adversaries.
¹⁵ The haters of Jehovah should ^{[ d ]} submit themselves unto him:
But their time should endure for ever.
¹⁶ He would feed them also with the ^{[ e ]} finest of the wheat;
And with honey out of the rock would I satisfy thee.

when he went out over the land of Egypt,
I heard a language that I didn’t know.

I answered you in the secret place of thunder.
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.” Selah.

⁸ “Hear, my people, and I will testify to you,
Israel, if you would listen to me!

neither shall you worship any foreign god.
¹⁰ I am Yahweh, your God,
who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
¹¹ But my people didn’t listen to my voice.
Israel desired none of me.
¹² So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts,
that they might walk in their own counsels.
¹³ Oh that my people would listen to me,
that Israel would walk in my ways!
¹⁴ I would soon subdue their enemies,
and turn my hand against their adversaries.
¹⁵ The haters of Yahweh would cringe before him,
and their punishment would last forever.
¹⁶ But he would have also fed them with the finest of the wheat.
I will satisfy you with honey out of the rock.”

81 To the Overseer. -- `On the Gittith.' By Asaph. Cry aloud to God our strength, Shout to the God of Jacob.

² Lift up a song, and give out a timbrel, A pleasant harp with psaltery.

³ Blow in the month a trumpet, In the new moon, at the day of our festival,

⁴ For a statute to Israel it [is], An ordinance of the God of Jacob.

⁵ A testimony on Joseph He hath placed it, In his going forth over the land of Egypt. A lip, I have not known -- I hear.

⁶ From the burden his shoulder I turned aside, His hands from the basket pass over.

⁷ In distress thou hast called and I deliver thee, I answer thee in the secret place of thunder, I try thee by the waters of Meribah. Selah.

⁸ Hear, O My people, and I testify to thee, O Israel, if thou dost hearken to me:

⁹ There is not in thee a strange god, And thou bowest not thyself to a strange god.

¹⁰ I [am] Jehovah thy God, Who bringeth thee up out of the land of Egypt. Enlarge thy mouth, and I fill it.

¹¹ But, My people hearkened not to My voice, And Israel hath not consented to Me.

¹² And I send them away in the enmity of their heart, They walk in their own counsels.

¹³ O that My people were hearkening to Me, Israel in My ways would walk.

¹⁴ As a little thing their enemies I cause to bow, And against their adversaries I turn back My hand,

¹⁵ Those hating Jehovah feign obedience to Him, But their time is -- to the age.

¹⁶ He causeth him to eat of the fat of wheat, And [with] honey from a rock I satisfy thee!
