- Psalm Chapter 80
80 Shepherd of Israel, listen to us!
You lead us, Joseph's family,
as your sheep. [ b ]
God, you sit on your throne as king,
above the cherubs. [ c ]
Show everyone your bright glory!
2 Shine on Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.
Show your great power!
Come and rescue us!
3 God, turn us to come back to you.
Look at us with a smile on your face!
Then we will be safe.
4 Lord God Almighty,
we, your people, are praying to you.
How long will you continue to be angry with us?
5 You have caused us to eat tears as our food.
Buckets full of tears is what we drink.
6 You have caused the people who live near us
to laugh at us.
Our enemies insult us.
7 God Almighty, turn us to come back to you.
Look at us with a smile on your face!
Then we will be safe.
8 You pulled us out from Egypt,
like a vine that you dug out of the ground.
You chased nations out of this land,
and you planted us here. [ d ]
9 You prepared the ground ready for us.
We put down roots like a vine. [ e ]
We grew well and we covered all the land.
10 Our branches gave shade to the mountains,
and to the big cedar trees.
11 Our branches reached the Mediterranean Sea,
and as far as the Euphrates River.
12 Why have you knocked down the walls
that protected us? [ f ]
Now, anyone who passes can rob our fruit.
13 Wild pigs from the forest attack your vine.
Other wild animals eat all the fruit.
14 Come back to us, God Almighty!
Look down from heaven
and see what is happening!
Take care of your special vine.
15 You planted it with your own right hand.
You caused it to grow, like a strong son. [ g ]
16 But now the enemy has cut down your vine,
and they have burned it with fire.
Show them that you are angry with them,
and destroy them!
17 Give strength to the one who sits at your right hand.
He is the man that you have chosen to serve you. [ h ]
18 Then we will never turn away from you.
Give to us new life and strength,
so that we may always worship you.
19 Lord God Almighty, turn us to come back to you.
Look at us with a smile on your face!
Then we will be safe.
80 Shepherd of Israel, listen to us.
You lead your people [ a ] like sheep.
You sit on your throne above the Cherub angels.
Let us see you.
2 Shepherd of Israel, show your greatness to the tribes of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh.
Come and save your people.
3 God, accept us again.
Smile down on us and save us!
4 Lord God All-Powerful, when will you listen to our prayers?
How long will you be angry with us?
5 Instead of bread and water,
you gave your people tears.
6 You made us the target of everyone’s hatred.
Our enemies make fun of us.
7 God All-Powerful, accept us again.
Smile down on us and save us!
8 When you brought us out of Egypt,
we were like your special vine.
You forced other nations to leave this land,
and you planted that vine here.
9 You prepared the ground for it,
and it sent its roots down deep and spread throughout the land.
10 It covered the mountains,
and its leaves shaded even the giant cedar trees.
11 Its branches spread to the Mediterranean Sea,
its shoots to the Euphrates River.
12 God, why did you pull down the walls that protect your vine?
Now everyone who passes by picks its grapes.
13 Wild pigs come and ruin it.
Wild animals eat the leaves.
14 God All-Powerful, come back.
Look down from heaven at your vine and protect it.
15 Look at the vine you planted with your own hands.
Look at the young plant [ b ] you raised.
16 Our enemies have cut it down and burned it up.
Show them how angry you are and destroy them.
17 Reach out and help your chosen one. [ c ]
Reach out to the people [ d ] you raised up.
18 Then we will never leave you.
Let us live, and we will worship you.
19 Lord God All-Powerful, accept us again.
Smile down on us and save us!
80 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.
2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us.
3 Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
4 O Lord God of hosts, how long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people?
5 Thou feedest them with the bread of tears; and givest them tears to drink in great measure.
6 Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
8 Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.
9 Thou preparedst room before it, and didst cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land.
10 The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.
11 She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river.
12 Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?
13 The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field doth devour it.
14 Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine;
15 And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself.
16 It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
17 Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.
18 So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.
19 Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
80 Listen, ( A ) Shepherd of Israel,
Who leads ( B ) Joseph like a flock;
You who ( C ) are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!
2 Before ( D ) Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, ( E ) awaken Your power,
And come to save us!
3 God, ( F ) restore us
And ( G ) make Your face shine upon us , [ c ] and we will be saved.
4 ( H ) Lord God of armies,
( I ) How long will You [ d ] be angry with the prayer of Your people?
5 You have fed them with the ( J ) bread of tears,
And You have made them drink tears in [ e ] large measure.
6 You make us [ f ] an object of contention ( K ) to our neighbors,
And our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 God of armies, restore us
And make Your face shine upon us , [ g ] and we will be saved.
8 You removed a ( L ) vine from Egypt;
You ( M ) drove out the [ h ] nations and ( N ) planted it.
9 You ( O ) cleared the ground before it,
And it ( P ) took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shadow,
And [ i ] the cedars of God with its ( Q ) branches.
11 It was sending out its branches ( R ) to the sea
And its shoots to the Euphrates River.
12 Why have You ( S ) broken down its [ j ] hedges,
So that all who pass that way pick its fruit ?
13 A boar from the forest ( T ) eats it away,
And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.
14 God of armies, do ( U ) turn back;
( V ) Look down from heaven and see, and take care of this vine,
15 The [ k ] ( W ) shoot which Your right hand has planted,
And of the [ l ] son whom You have [ m ] strengthened for Yourself.
16 It is ( X ) burned with fire, it is cut down;
They perish from the ( Y ) rebuke of Your face.
17 Let ( Z ) Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,
Upon the son of man whom You ( AA ) made strong for Yourself.
18 Then we will not ( AB ) turn back from You;
( AC ) Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.
19 Lord God of armies, ( AD ) restore us;
Make Your face shine upon us , [ n ] and we will be saved.
1 Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock. ( A )
You who sit enthroned between the cherubim, ( B )
shine forth 2 before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh. ( C )
Awaken ( D ) your might;
come and save us. ( E )
4 How long, ( I ) Lord God Almighty,
will your anger smolder ( J )
against the prayers of your people?
5 You have fed them with the bread of tears; ( K )
you have made them drink tears by the bowlful. ( L )
6 You have made us an object of derision [ b ] to our neighbors,
and our enemies mock us. ( M )
7 Restore us, God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved. ( N )
8 You transplanted a vine ( O ) from Egypt;
you drove out ( P ) the nations and planted ( Q ) it.
9 You cleared the ground for it,
and it took root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11 Its branches reached as far as the Sea, [ c ]
its shoots as far as the River. [ d ] ( R )
12 Why have you broken down its walls ( S )
so that all who pass by pick its grapes?
13 Boars from the forest ravage ( T ) it,
and insects from the fields feed on it.
14 Return to us, God Almighty!
Look down from heaven and see! ( U )
Watch over this vine,
15 the root your right hand has planted,
the son [ e ] you have raised up for yourself.
16 Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire; ( V )
at your rebuke ( W ) your people perish.
17 Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand,
the son of man ( X ) you have raised up for yourself.
18 Then we will not turn away from you;
revive ( Y ) us, and we will call on your name.
19 Restore us, Lord God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.
