Asaph wrote this song for the music leader. He should use special music.

God judges people fairly

75 God, we thank you!
Yes, we thank you!
You are very near to us.
People everywhere say what great things you have done.
2 God says, ‘I choose the time when I will judge people,
and I will be a fair judge.
3 When the earth shakes and the people in it are afraid,
I will keep its foundations strong.’
Selah.
4 I say to people who are proud,
‘Do not be proud.’
I say to wicked people,
‘Do not boast about your power.
5 Do not boast against God.
Do not speak with such proud words.’
6 Who has the power to judge people?
Nobody from the east, or from the west,
or from the desert can be judge.
7 God is the one who judges people.
He decides who to bring down
and who to lift up. [ a ]
8 The Lord holds a cup of punishment in his hand. [ b ]
It is full of wine, with spices in it.
The Lord pours out his anger from this cup.
All the wicked people in the world will have to drink it.
They will drink all of it, so that none remains.

9 But as for me, I will always thank you, God.
I will sing to praise you,
the God of Jacob.
10 You say, ‘I will destroy the power of wicked people.
I will give strength to my righteous people.’

Footnotes

  1. 75:7 God says that one person is wrong (he brings them down) and another person is right (he lifts them up).
  2. 75:8 A cup with strong wine in it is a picture of God's anger and punishment.

To the director: To the tune “Don’t Destroy.” One of Asaph’s songs of praise.

75 We praise you, God!
We praise you because you [ a ] are near to us.
We tell about the amazing things you have done.

2 God says, “I have chosen a time for judgment,
and I will judge fairly.
3 The earth and all its people may shake,
but I am the one who keeps it steady. Selah

4 “To those who are proud I say, ‘Stop your boasting.’
I warn the wicked, ‘Don’t brag about how strong you are.
5 Don’t be so sure that you will win.
Don’t boast that victory is yours!’”

6 There is no power on earth
that can make a person important. [ b ]
7 God is the judge.
He decides who will be important.
He lifts one person up and brings another down.
8 The Lord has a cup in his hand.
It is filled with the poisoned wine of his anger.
He will pour out this wine,
and the wicked will drink it to the last drop.
9 I will always tell people how great God is.
I will sing praise to the God of Jacob.
10 God says, “I will take away any power the wicked have
and give it to those who are good.”

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 75:1 you Literally, “your name.”
  2. Psalm 75:6 Literally, “Not from the east or the west and not from the desert mountains.”

75 Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.

2 When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly.

3 The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah.

4 I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:

5 Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.

6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.

7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

8 For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.

9 But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.

10 All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.

God Humbles the Proud, but Exalts the Righteous.

For the music director; set to [ a ] Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.

75 We ( A ) give thanks to You, God, we give thanks,
For Your name is ( B ) near;
People declare ( C ) Your wondrous works.
2 “When I select an ( D ) appointed time,
It is I who ( E ) judge fairly.
3 The ( F ) earth and all who inhabit it [ b ] are unsteady;
It is I who have firmly set its ( G ) pillars. Selah
4 I said to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
And to the wicked, ‘ ( H ) Do not lift up the horn;
5 Do not lift up your horn on high,
( I ) Do not speak with insolent [ c ] pride.’”

6 For not from the east, nor from the west,
Nor from the [ d ] ( J ) desert comes exaltation;
7 But ( K ) God is the Judge;
He ( L ) puts down one and exalts another.
8 For a ( M ) cup is in the hand of the Lord , and the wine foams;
It is [ e ] ( N ) well mixed, and He pours out of this;
Certainly all the wicked of the earth must drain and ( O ) drink its dregs.

9 But as for me, I will ( P ) declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 And [ f ] He will cut off all the ( Q ) horns of the wicked,
But ( R ) the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.
