74 O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?

² Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.

³ Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.

⁴ Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.

⁵ A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.

⁶ But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.

⁷ They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground.

⁸ They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.

⁹ We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.

¹⁰ O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?

¹¹ Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.

¹² For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

¹³ Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.

¹⁴ Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.

¹⁵ Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.

¹⁶ The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.

¹⁷ Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.

¹⁸ Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O Lord , and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.

¹⁹ O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever.

²⁰ Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.

²¹ O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name.

²² Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.

²³ Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually.

74 God, why have you turned away from us for so long?
Why are you still angry with us, your own flock?
² Remember the people you bought so long ago.
You saved us, and we belong to you.
And remember Mount Zion, the place where you lived.
³ God, come walk through these ancient ruins.
Come back to the Holy Place that the enemy destroyed.

⁴ The enemy shouted their war cries in the Temple.
They put up their flags there to show they had won the war.
⁵ Their soldiers attacked the doors,
like workmen chopping down trees.
⁶ Using axes and hatchets,
they smashed the carved panels inside.
⁷ They burned down your Holy Place.
It was built to honor your name,
but they pulled it down to the ground.
⁸ The enemy decided to crush us completely.
They burned every holy place ^{[ a ]} in the country.
⁹ We do not see any of our signs. ^{[ b ]}
There are no more prophets.
And no one knows how long this will last.
¹⁰ God, how much longer will the enemy make fun of us?
Will you let them insult your name forever?
¹¹ Why won’t you help us?
Use your power to defeat our enemies!
¹² God, you have been our King for a long time.
You have saved us many times on this earth.
¹³ With your great power you split open the sea
and broke the heads of the sea monster.
¹⁴ Yes, you smashed the heads of Leviathan ^{[ c ]}
and left his body for animals to eat.
¹⁵ You make the springs and rivers flow,
and you make the rivers dry up.
¹⁶ You control the day and the night.
You made the sun and the moon.
¹⁷ You set the limits for everything on earth.
And you created summer and winter.
¹⁸ Lord , remember, the enemy insulted you!
Those foolish people hate your name!
¹⁹ Don’t give us like a helpless dove to those wild animals.
Never forget your poor, suffering people.
²⁰ Remember the agreement you gave us,
because violence fills every dark place in this land.
²¹ Your people were treated badly.
Don’t let them be hurt anymore.
Let your poor, helpless people praise you.
²² God, get up and defend yourself!
Remember, those fools challenged you.
²³ Don’t forget the shouts of your enemies.
They insulted you again and again.

Footnotes

Psalm 74:8 holy place Or “El meeting place.” This means every place where people went to meet with God.
Psalm 74:9 signs These were probably signal fires that people burned as a way of passing messages from one town to the next. In war, this was a way people showed other towns that the enemy had not yet destroyed their own town.
Psalm 74:14 sea monster … Leviathan These were creatures from ancient stories. People believed that they kept the world from being a safe, orderly place. So this verse means that God controls every part of the world and everything in it.

74 O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever?
Why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?
² Remember thy congregation, which thou hast gotten of old,
Which thou hast redeemed to be the tribe of thine inheritance;
And mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
³ Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual ruins,
^{[ a ]} All the evil that the enemy hath done in the sanctuary.
⁴ Thine adversaries have roared in the midst of thine assembly;
They have set up their ensigns for signs.
⁵ They ^{[ b ]} seemed as men that lifted up
Axes upon a thicket of trees.
⁶ And now all the carved work thereof
They break down with hatchet and hammers.
⁷ They have set thy sanctuary on fire;
They have profaned the dwelling-place of thy name by casting it to the ground.
⁸ They said in their heart, Let us make havoc of them altogether:
They have burned up all the ^{[ c ]} synagogues of God in the land.
⁹ We see not our signs:
There is no more any prophet;
Neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
¹⁰ How long, O God, shall the adversary reproach?
Shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?
¹¹ Why drawest thou back thy hand, even thy right hand?
Pluck it out of thy bosom and consume them .

¹² Yet God is my King of old,
Working salvation in the midst of the earth.

²¹ Oh let not the oppressed return ashamed:
Let the poor and needy praise thy name.
²² Arise, O God, plead thine own cause:
Remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee all the day.
²³ Forget not the voice of thine adversaries:
The tumult of those that rise up against thee ^{[ k ]} ascendeth continually.

74 God, why have you rejected us forever?
Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
² Remember your congregation, which you purchased of old,
which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your inheritance:
Mount Zion, in which you have lived.
³ Lift up your feet to the perpetual ruins,
all the evil that the enemy has done in the sanctuary.
⁴ Your adversaries have roared in the middle of your assembly.
They have set up their standards as signs.
⁵ They behaved like men wielding axes,
cutting through a thicket of trees.
⁶ Now they break all its carved work down with hatchet and hammers.
⁷ They have burned your sanctuary to the ground.
They have profaned the dwelling place of your Name.
⁸ They said in their heart, “We will crush them completely.”
They have burned up all the places in the land where God was worshiped.
⁹ We see no miraculous signs.
There is no longer any prophet,
neither is there among us anyone who knows how long.
¹⁰ How long, God, shall the adversary reproach?
Shall the enemy blaspheme your name forever?
¹¹ Why do you draw back your hand, even your right hand?
Take it from your chest and consume them!

¹² Yet God is my King of old,
working salvation throughout the earth.
¹³ You divided the sea by your strength.
You broke the heads of the sea monsters in the waters.
¹⁴ You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces.
You gave him as food to people and desert creatures.
¹⁵ You opened up spring and stream.
You dried up mighty rivers.
¹⁶ The day is yours, the night is also yours.
You have prepared the light and the sun.
¹⁷ You have set all the boundaries of the earth.
You have made summer and winter.

¹⁸ Remember this, that the enemy has mocked you, Yahweh.
Foolish people have blasphemed your name.
¹⁹ Don’t deliver the soul of your dove to wild beasts.
Don’t forget the life of your poor forever.
²⁰ Honor your covenant,
for haunts of violence fill the dark places of the earth.
²¹ Don’t let the oppressed return ashamed.
Let the poor and needy praise your name.
²² Arise, God! Plead your own cause.
Remember how the foolish man mocks you all day.
²³ Don’t forget the voice of your adversaries.
The tumult of those who rise up against you ascends continually.

74 An Instruction of Asaph. Why, O God, hast Thou cast off for ever? Thine anger smoketh against the flock of Thy pasture.

² Remember Thy company. Thou didst purchase of old, Thou didst redeem the rod of Thy inheritance, This mount Zion -- Thou didst dwell in it.

³ Lift up Thy steps to the perpetual desolations, Everything the enemy did wickedly in the sanctuary.

⁴ Roared have thine adversaries, In the midst of Thy meeting-places, They have set their ensigns as ensigns.

⁵ He is known as one bringing in on high Against a thicket of wood -- axes.

⁶ And now, its carvings together With axe and hatchet they break down,

⁷ They have sent into fire Thy sanctuary, to the earth they polluted the tabernacle of Thy name,

⁸ They said in their hearts, `Let us oppress them together,' They did burn all the meeting-places of God in the land.

⁹ Our ensigns we have not seen, There is no more a prophet, Nor with us is one knowing how long.

¹⁰ Till when, O God, doth an adversary reproach? Doth an enemy despise thy name for ever?

¹¹ Why dost Thou turn back Thy hand, Even Thy right hand? From the midst of Thy bosom remove [it].

¹² And God [is] my king of old, Working salvation in the midst of the earth.

¹³ Thou hast broken by Thy strength a sea-[monster], Thou hast shivered Heads of dragons by the waters,

¹⁴ Thou hast broken the heads of leviathan, Thou makest him food, For the people of the dry places.

¹⁵ Thou hast cleaved a fountain and a stream, Thou hast dried up perennial flowings.

¹⁶ Thine [is] the day, also Thine [is] the night, Thou hast prepared a light giver -- the sun.

¹⁷ Thou hast set up all the borders of earth, Summer and winter Thou hast formed them.

¹⁸ Remember this -- an enemy reproached Jehovah, And a foolish people have despised Thy name.

¹⁹ Give not up to a company, The soul of Thy turtle-dove, The company of Thy poor ones forget not for ever.

²⁰ Look attentively to the covenant, For the dark places of earth, Have been full of habitations of violence.

²¹ Let not the oppressed turn back ashamed, Let the poor and needy praise Thy name,

²² Arise, O God, plead Thy plea, Remember Thy reproach from a fool all the day.

²³ Forget not the voice of Thine adversaries, The noise of Thy withstanders is going up continually!
