David wrote this song for the music leader. Use special music.

Trust God for help

69 Please rescue me, God,
because the deep water has come up to my neck.
2 I will soon sink into deep mud.
There is no safe place to put my feet.
I am now in deep water,
and the floods pour over me.
3 I have shouted so much for help
that I am tired and weak.
My mouth is so dry that it hurts.
I have looked so long for help from you, my God,
that my eyes have become weak.
4 Very many people hate me with no good reason.
They are more than the number of hairs on my head!
My enemies are too strong for me.
They want to destroy me with their lies.
They make me give back to them
things that I did not take from them!
5 You know, God, that I do foolish things.
I cannot hide my sins from you.
6 My Lord, Almighty Lord , Israel's God,
do not let anyone who trusts you
become ashamed because of me.
Do not let anyone who serves you
become ashamed because of me.
7 Because I belong to you,
people insult me.
They make me feel ashamed.
8 I have become like a stranger to my brothers.
I am like a foreigner to my family.
9 My love for your house burns inside me like a fire.
Anybody who insults you,
is also insulting me!
10 When I weep and I stop eating food,
it causes people to insult me.
11 When I wear rough clothes to show that I am sad,
people laugh at me.
12 People who sit at the city gate talk about me. [ a ]
People who are drunk make songs
to sing about me.
13 But as for me, Lord ,
I continue to pray to you.
Please answer me at the right time.
Be kind to me, God,
because of your faithful love.
Save me, as you have promised to do.
14 Save me out of the mud
and do not let me sink down into it.
Rescue me from the people that hate me.
Save me from the deep water.
15 Do not let the floods pour over me.
Do not let the deep sea cause me to drown.
Do not let me fall into the deep hole of death.
16 Please answer me, Lord ,
because your faithful love is great.
Turn to hear me,
because you are so very kind.
17 Do not turn away from me, your servant.
I am in great trouble,
so please answer me very soon.
18 Come very near to me,
and make me safe.
Rescue me from my enemies.
19 God, you know that people are insulting me.
They laugh at me
to make me feel ashamed.
You can see what all my enemies are doing.
20 When they insult me,
it makes me very upset.
I feel helpless.
I hoped that someone would be kind and help me,
but there was nobody.
I wanted someone to comfort me,
but I did not find anyone.
21 Instead, my enemies put poison in my food.
When I was thirsty,
they gave me vinegar to drink. [ b ]
22 Please God, cause their feasts to become a trap for them.
Let it bring trouble to them and their friends.
23 Let their eyes be in the dark
so that they cannot see.
Let their bodies become weak.
24 Yes, punish them,
because you are so angry with them!
25 Let their homes become empty,
so that nobody lives in them any more.
26 Do this, because they chase after
the people that you have already punished.
They talk about the pain
of the people that you have hurt.
27 Make a note of all their sins.
Do not ever forgive them,
so that they are righteous.
28 Remove their names from the book of living people.
Do not write their names
on the list of righteous people.
29 But I have pain in my body
and trouble in my mind.
God, rescue me and keep me safe!
30 I will sing to praise God's name!
I will thank him because he is great!
31 That will please the Lord more
than if I offer him an ox,
or a great bull with horns. [ c ]
32 When humble people see it,
they will be very happy.
People who want to serve God
will become strong in their lives.
33 For the Lord listens to the prayers of poor people.
He does not forget to help his people
when they are prisoners.
34 Heaven and earth should praise him!
The seas and everything that lives in them
should praise him!
35 For God will rescue Zion's people.
He will build again Judah's cities.
Then his people will live there.
The land will belong to them again.
36 Then the descendants of his servants
will have the land for themselves.
The people who love God
will live there safely.

Footnotes

  1. 69:12 The leaders of the people sat by the gate of their town. They talked together to decide what to do.
  2. 69:21 Vinegar has a bitter taste. It would not help someone who was thirsty.
  3. 69:31 The ox and the bull were sacrifices.

To the director: To the tune “The Lilies.” A song of David.

69 God, save me from all my troubles!
The rising water has reached my neck.
2 I have nothing to stand on.
I am sinking down, down into the mud.
I am in deep water,
and the waves are about to cover me.
3 I am getting weak from calling for help.
My throat is sore.
I have waited and looked for your help
until my eyes are hurting.
4 I have more enemies than the hairs on my head.
They hate me for no reason.
They try hard to destroy me.
My enemies tell lies about me.
They say I stole from them
and they demand that I pay for things I did not steal.
5 God, you know my faults.
I cannot hide my sins from you.
6 My Lord God All-Powerful, don’t let me embarrass your followers.
God of Israel, don’t let me bring disgrace to those who worship you.
7 My face is covered with shame.
I carry this shame for you.
8 My own brothers treat me like a stranger.
They act as if I came from a foreign land.
9 My strong devotion to your Temple is destroying me.
Those who insult you are also insulting me.
10 When I spend time crying and fasting,
they make fun of me.
11 When I wear sackcloth to show my sorrow,
they tell jokes about me.
12 They talk about me in public places.
The beer drinkers make up songs about me.
13 As for me, Lord , this is my prayer to you:
Please accept me!
God, I want you to answer me with love.
I know I can trust you to save me.
14 Pull me from the mud,
and don’t let me sink down deeper.
Save me from those who hate me.
Save me from this deep water.
15 Don’t let the waves drown me.
Don’t let the deep sea swallow me
or the grave close its mouth on me.
16 Answer me, Lord , from the goodness of your faithful love.
Out of your great kindness turn to me and help me!
17 Don’t turn away from your servant.
I am in trouble, so hurry and help me!
18 Come save my soul.
Rescue me from my enemies.
19 You know the shame I have suffered.
You know all my enemies.
You saw how they humiliated me.
20 I feel the pain of their insults.
The shame makes me feel like dying!
I wanted some sympathy,
but there was none.
I waited for someone to comfort me,
but no one came.
21 They gave me poison, not food.
They gave me vinegar, not wine.
22 Their tables are covered with food.
Let their fellowship meals destroy them.
23 Let them go blind and their backs become weak.
24 Show them how angry you are.
Let them feel what your anger can do.
25 Make their homes empty.
Don’t let anyone live there.
26 They try to hurt people you have already punished.
They tell everyone about the suffering you gave them.
27 Punish them for the bad things they have done.
Don’t show them how good you can be.
28 Erase their names from the book of life.
Don’t let their names appear on the list of those who do what is right.
29 I am sad and hurting.
God, lift me up and save me!
30 I will praise God’s name in song.
I will honor him by giving him thanks.
31 The Lord will be happier with this
than with the offering of an ox or a full-grown bull as a sacrifice.
32 Poor people, you came to worship God.
You will be happy to know these things.
33 The Lord listens to poor, helpless people.
He does not turn away from those who are in prison.
34 Praise him, heaven and earth!
Sea and everything in it, praise him!
35 God will save Zion.
He will rebuild the cities of Judah.
The people will settle there again and own the land.
36 The descendants of his servants will get that land.
Those who love his name will live there.

69 Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.

2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

3 I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

4 They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.

5 O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.

6 Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.

7 Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.

8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

11 I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

12 They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

13 But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Lord , in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

15 Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

16 Hear me, O Lord ; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

17 And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.

18 Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.

19 Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.

20 Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

22 Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.

23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.

24 Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

25 Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.

26 For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.

27 Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.

28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

29 But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.

30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.

31 This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.

32 The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.

33 For the Lord heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.

34 Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.

35 For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.

36 The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.

A Cry of Distress and a Curse on Adversaries.

For the music director; according to [ a ] Shoshannim. A Psalm of David.

69 Save me, God,
For the ( A ) waters have [ b ] threatened my life.
2 I have sunk in deep ( B ) mud, and there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters, and a [ c ] ( C ) flood overflows me.
3 I am ( D ) weary with my crying; my throat is parched;
My ( E ) eyes fail while I wait for my God.
4 Those ( F ) who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head;
Those who would [ d ] destroy me ( G ) are powerful, those who oppose me with lies;
( H ) What I did not steal, I then have to restore.

5 God, You know ( I ) my foolishness,
And ( J ) my guilt is not hidden from You.
6 May those who wait for You not ( K ) be ashamed because of me, Lord [ e ] God of armies;
May those who seek You not be dishonored because of me, God of Israel,
7 Because ( L ) for Your sake I have endured disgrace;
( M ) Dishonor has covered my face.
8 I have become ( N ) estranged [ f ] from my brothers,
And a stranger to my mother’s sons.
9 For ( O ) zeal for Your house has consumed me,
And ( P ) the taunts of those who taunt You have fallen on me.
10 When I wept ( Q ) in my soul with fasting,
It became my ( R ) disgrace.
11 When I made ( S ) sackcloth my clothing,
I became ( T ) a proverb to them.
12 Those who ( U ) sit in the gate talk about me,
And ( V ) songs of mockery by those habitually drunk are about me .

13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, Lord , ( W ) at an acceptable time;
God, in the ( X ) greatness of Your mercy,
Answer me with [ g ] Your saving truth.
14 Rescue me from the ( Y ) mud and do not let me sink;
May I be ( Z ) rescued from those who hate me, and from the ( AA ) depths of water.
15 May the [ h ] ( AB ) flood of water not overflow me
Nor the deep swallow me up,
Nor the ( AC ) pit close its mouth on me.

16 Answer me, Lord , for ( AD ) Your mercy is good;
( AE ) According to the greatness of Your compassion, ( AF ) turn to me,
17 And ( AG ) do not hide Your face from Your servant,
For I am ( AH ) in distress; answer me quickly.
18 Come near to my soul and ( AI ) redeem it;
( AJ ) Ransom me because of my enemies!
19 You know my ( AK ) disgrace, my shame, and my dishonor;
All my enemies are [ i ] known to You.

20 Disgrace has ( AL ) broken my heart, and I am so sick.
And ( AM ) I waited for sympathy, but there was none;
And for ( AN ) comforters, but I found none.
21 They also gave me [ j ] ( AO ) a bitter herb in my food,
And for my thirst they ( AP ) gave me vinegar to drink.

22 May ( AQ ) their table before them become a snare;
And [ k ] ( AR ) when they are at peace, may it become a trap.
23 May their ( AS ) eyes grow dim so that they cannot see,
And make their ( AT ) hips shake continually.
24 ( AU ) Pour out Your indignation on them,
And may Your burning anger overtake them.
25 May their [ l ] ( AV ) camp be desolated;
May there be none living in their tents.
26 For they have ( AW ) persecuted him whom ( AX ) You Yourself struck,
And they tell of the pain of those whom ( AY ) You have [ m ] wounded.
27 Add ( AZ ) guilt to their guilt,
And ( BA ) may they not come into ( BB ) Your righteousness.
28 May they be ( BC ) wiped out of the ( BD ) book of life,
And may they not be [ n ] ( BE ) recorded with the righteous.

29 But I am ( BF ) afflicted and in pain;
[ o ] May Your salvation, God, ( BG ) set me safely on high.
30 I will ( BH ) praise the name of God with song,
And ( BI ) exalt Him with ( BJ ) thanksgiving.
31 And it will ( BK ) please the Lord better than an ox
Or bull with horns and hoofs.
32 The ( BL ) humble [ p ] have seen it and are glad;
You who seek God, ( BM ) let your heart [ q ] revive.
33 For ( BN ) the Lord hears the needy,
And ( BO ) does not despise those of His who are prisoners.

34 ( BP ) Heaven and earth shall praise Him,
The seas and ( BQ ) everything that moves in them.
35 For God will ( BR ) save Zion and ( BS ) build the cities of Judah,
So that they may live there and ( BT ) possess it.
36 The [ r ] ( BU ) descendants of His servants will inherit it,
And those who love His name ( BV ) will live in it.

Psalm 69 [ a ]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.

1 Save me, O God,
for the waters ( A ) have come up to my neck. ( B )
2 I sink in the miry depths, ( C )
where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
the floods engulf me.
3 I am worn out calling for help; ( D )
my throat is parched.
My eyes fail, ( E )
looking for my God.
4 Those who hate me ( F ) without reason ( G )
outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause, ( H )
those who seek to destroy me. ( I )
I am forced to restore
what I did not steal.

5 You, God, know my folly; ( J )
my guilt is not hidden from you. ( K )

6 Lord, the Lord Almighty,
may those who hope in you
not be disgraced because of me;
God of Israel,
may those who seek you
not be put to shame because of me.
7 For I endure scorn ( L ) for your sake, ( M )
and shame covers my face. ( N )
8 I am a foreigner to my own family,
a stranger to my own mother’s children; ( O )
9 for zeal for your house consumes me, ( P )
and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. ( Q )
10 When I weep and fast, ( R )
I must endure scorn;
11 when I put on sackcloth, ( S )
people make sport of me.
12 Those who sit at the gate ( T ) mock me,
and I am the song of the drunkards. ( U )

13 But I pray to you, Lord ,
in the time of your favor; ( V )
in your great love, ( W ) O God,
answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Rescue me from the mire,
do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
from the deep waters. ( X )
15 Do not let the floodwaters ( Y ) engulf me
or the depths swallow me up ( Z )
or the pit close its mouth over me. ( AA )

in your great mercy turn to me.
17 Do not hide your face ( AC ) from your servant;
answer me quickly, ( AD ) for I am in trouble. ( AE )
18 Come near and rescue me;
deliver ( AF ) me because of my foes.

all my enemies are before you.

and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
for comforters, ( AH ) but I found none. ( AI )
21 They put gall in my food
and gave me vinegar ( AJ ) for my thirst. ( AK )

22 May the table set before them become a snare;
may it become retribution and [ b ] a trap. ( AL )
23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
and their backs be bent forever. ( AM )
24 Pour out your wrath ( AN ) on them;
let your fierce anger overtake them.
25 May their place be deserted; ( AO )
let there be no one to dwell in their tents. ( AP )
26 For they persecute those you wound
and talk about the pain of those you hurt. ( AQ )
27 Charge them with crime upon crime; ( AR )
do not let them share in your salvation. ( AS )
28 May they be blotted out of the book of life ( AT )
and not be listed with the righteous. ( AU )

29 But as for me, afflicted and in pain—
may your salvation, God, protect me. ( AV )

and glorify him ( AX ) with thanksgiving.

you who seek God, may your hearts live! ( BA )
33 The Lord hears the needy ( BB )
and does not despise his captive people.
