This psalm is a song for the music leader.

Praise God! [ a ]

66 Everyone on earth, shout aloud to praise God,
because you are very happy.
2 Sing to praise his great name!
Praise him in the way that he deserves.
3 Say to God, ‘You do great things!
Your great power makes your enemies afraid.
They come to you and they bend down to the ground.
4 The whole world bends down to worship you.
Everyone sings to praise your name.’
Selah.
5 Come and see the great things that God has done.
He has done wonderful miracles for people!
6 He caused the Red Sea to become dry land.
Then his people walked across the Jordan River! [ b ]
So we praise him for what he did there!
7 He has the power to rule for ever.
He watches everything that the nations do.
Wicked people should not be proud and turn against him.
Selah.
8 You people from every nation,
agree that our God is great!
Praise him with loud voices,
so that everyone can hear!
9 He keeps our lives safe.
He does not let us fall to the ground.
10 You have tested us, God.
You wanted to make us pure,
as they make silver pure in a hot fire.
11 You caused a trap to catch us,
so that we had much pain and trouble.
12 You gave people power to hurt us.
We went through dangerous fire and water.
But then you brought us into a safe, open place. [ c ]

13 I will bring burnt offerings to your Temple.
I will bring to you the gifts that I promised.
14 When I was in trouble, I made those promises.
I spoke them aloud.
15 I will offer to you gifts of fat animals,
to burn them as sacrifices.
I will also burn sheep as offerings,
and their smell will please you.
I will also offer to you bulls and goats.
Selah.
16 Come and listen,
all you people who serve God.
I will tell you about the things that God has done for me.
17 I called to him for help,
then I praised him aloud!
18 If I had kept wicked things in my mind,
the Lord would not have listened to me.
19 But God did hear me.
When I called to him,
he listened to my prayer.
20 So I praise God, as he deserves. [ d ]
He has not refused to listen to me.
He has continued to love me with his faithful love.

  1. 66:1 This psalm tells about the great things that God has done to help his people. As a result, his people should praise him as he deserves.
  2. 66:6 God led his people out of Egypt where they were slaves. He took them safely through the Red Sea on dry land. Then they walked across the Jordan River into Canaan.
  3. 66:12 Many times God tested his people to see if they really trusted him. Sometimes God let their enemies bring trouble and hurt them. God wanted to make them pure. Silver becomes pure when it is made very hot over a fire. Then the dirt becomes separate from the pure silver.
  4. 66:20 The writer wants everyone to praise God when they see all the good things that God has done.

66 Everything on earth, shout with joy to God!
2 Praise his glorious name!
Honor him with songs of praise!
3 Tell God, “Your works are wonderful!
Your great power makes your enemies bow down in fear before you.
4 Let the whole world worship you.
Let everyone sing praises to your name.” Selah

5 Look at what God has done!
These things amaze us.
6 He changed the sea to dry land, [ a ]
and his people went across the water [ b ] on foot.
So let’s celebrate because of what he has done!
7 He rules the world with his great power.
He watches people everywhere.
No one can rebel against him. Selah

8 People, praise our God.
Sing loud songs of praise to him.
9 He continues to give us life,
and he keeps us from falling.
10 God, you have tested us, as people test silver with fire.
11 You let us be trapped.
You put heavy burdens on us.
12 You let our enemies run over us.
We went through fire and water,
but you brought us to a safe place.
13-14 So I bring sacrifices to your Temple.
When I was in trouble, I asked for help
and made promises to you.
Now I am giving you what I promised.
15 I bring my best sheep as burnt offerings.
I offer the smoke from them up to you.
I give you sacrifices of bulls and goats. Selah

16 All you people who worship God,
come and I will tell you what he has done for me.
17-18 I cried out to him for help,
and I praised him.
If I had been hiding sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened to me.
19 But God did listen to me;
he heard my prayer.
20 Praise God!
He did not turn away from me—he listened to my prayer.
He continues to show his love to me!

  1. Psalm 66:6 changed the sea to dry land This was with Moses at the Red Sea. See Ex. 14.
  2. Psalm 66:6 water Literally, “river.” Although this word is not used for the Jordan River elsewhere, some think this line may refer to the later crossing there. See Josh. 3:14-17.

66 Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands:

2 Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious.

3 Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee.

4 All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah.

5 Come and see the works of God: he is terrible in his doing toward the children of men.

6 He turned the sea into dry land: they went through the flood on foot: there did we rejoice in him.

7 He ruleth by his power for ever; his eyes behold the nations: let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah.

8 O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard:

9 Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved.

10 For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.

11 Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins.

12 Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.

13 I will go into thy house with burnt offerings: I will pay thee my vows,

14 Which my lips have uttered, and my mouth hath spoken, when I was in trouble.

15 I will offer unto thee burnt sacrifices of fatlings, with the incense of rams; I will offer bullocks with goats. Selah.

16 Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.

17 I cried unto him with my mouth, and he was extolled with my tongue.

18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

19 But verily God hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer.

20 Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.

Praise for God’s Mighty Deeds and for His Answer to Prayer.

66 ( A ) Shout joyfully to God, all the earth;
2 Sing the ( B ) glory of His name;
Make His ( C ) praise glorious.
3 Say to God, “How ( D ) awesome are Your works!
Because of the greatness of Your power Your enemies will ( E ) pretend to obey You.
4 ( F ) All the earth will worship You,
And will ( G ) sing praises to You;
They will sing praises to Your name.” Selah

5 ( H ) Come and see the works of God,
Who is ( I ) awesome in His deeds toward the sons of mankind.
6 He ( J ) turned the sea into dry land;
They passed through ( K ) the river on foot;
Let’s ( L ) rejoice there, in Him!
7 He ( M ) rules by His might forever;
His ( N ) eyes keep watch on the nations;
The rebellious shall not ( O ) exalt themselves! Selah

8 Bless our God, you peoples,
And [ a ] ( P ) sound His praise abroad,
9 Who [ b ] ( Q ) keeps us in life,
And ( R ) does not allow our feet to [ c ] slip.
10 For You have ( S ) put us to the test, God;
You have ( T ) refined us as silver is refined.
11 You ( U ) brought us into the net;
You laid an oppressive burden upon [ d ] us.
12 You made men ( V ) ride over our heads;
We went through ( W ) fire and through water.
Yet You ( X ) brought us out into a place of abundance.
13 I shall ( Y ) come into Your house with burnt offerings;
I shall ( Z ) pay You my vows,
14 Which my lips uttered
And my mouth spoke when I was ( AA ) in distress.
15 I shall ( AB ) offer to You burnt offerings of fat animals,
With the smoke of ( AC ) rams;
I shall make an offering of [ e ] bulls with male goats. Selah

16 ( AD ) Come and hear, all who [ f ] fear God,
And I will ( AE ) tell of what He has done for my soul.
17 I cried to Him with my mouth,
And [ g ] He was ( AF ) exalted with my tongue.
18 If I [ h ] ( AG ) regard wickedness in my heart,
The ( AH ) Lord will not hear;
19 But ( AI ) God has heard;
He has given attention to the sound of my prayer.
20 ( AJ ) Blessed be God,
Who ( AK ) has not turned away my prayer
Nor His favor from me.

1 Shout for joy to God, all the earth! ( A )
2 Sing the glory of his name; ( B )
make his praise glorious. ( C )
3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! ( D )
So great is your power
that your enemies cringe ( E ) before you.
4 All the earth bows down ( F ) to you;
they sing praise ( G ) to you,
they sing the praises of your name.” [ a ]

5 Come and see what God has done,
his awesome deeds ( H ) for mankind!
6 He turned the sea into dry land, ( I )
they passed through ( J ) the waters on foot—
come, let us rejoice ( K ) in him.
7 He rules forever ( L ) by his power,
his eyes watch ( M ) the nations—
let not the rebellious ( N ) rise up against him.

8 Praise ( O ) our God, all peoples,
let the sound of his praise be heard;
9 he has preserved our lives ( P )
and kept our feet from slipping. ( Q )
10 For you, God, tested ( R ) us;
you refined us like silver. ( S )
11 You brought us into prison ( T )
and laid burdens ( U ) on our backs.
12 You let people ride over our heads; ( V )
we went through fire and water,
but you brought us to a place of abundance. ( W )

13 I will come to your temple with burnt offerings ( X )
and fulfill my vows ( Y ) to you—
14 vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
when I was in trouble.
15 I will sacrifice fat animals to you
and an offering of rams;
I will offer bulls and goats. ( Z )

16 Come and hear, ( AA ) all you who fear God;
let me tell ( AB ) you what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him with my mouth;
his praise was on my tongue.
18 If I had cherished sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened; ( AC )
19 but God has surely listened
and has heard ( AD ) my prayer.
20 Praise be to God,
who has not rejected ( AE ) my prayer
or withheld his love from me!
