David wrote this song for the music leader.

God will keep us safe [ a ]

64 God, please listen to me
as I tell you about my troubles.
Keep me safe from my enemies
when they attack me.
2 When evil men think of ways to hurt me,
hide me in a safe place.
Those people work together as a group
to do wicked things.
3 Their tongues are like
sharp swords that hurt people.
Their cruel words are like
arrows that they shoot at people.
4 They hide in secret places,
and they quickly shoot lies at good people.
They are not afraid that anyone will punish them.
5 They help each other to do evil things.
They decide where they will hide their traps,
and they say, ‘Nobody will see them!’
6 They think of wicked ideas to hurt people.
They say, ‘That is a great idea!’ [ b ]
Nobody really understands what people think
deep inside themselves.
7 But God will punish them!
He will suddenly shoot an arrow at them
and it will hurt them a lot. [ c ]
8 Their own evil words will turn against them
and make them fall.
Everyone who sees them will shake their heads.
9 People will be afraid.
They will say, ‘Look at what God has done!’
They will think carefully about it all.
10 But people who serve the Lord should be happy
because of what he has done.
They should trust him to keep them safe.
Good, honest people should praise God,
because he is great!

Footnotes

  1. 64:1 David wants God to keep him safe from bad people who wanted to hurt him. At the end of the psalm he says what God will do. People who trust him do not need to be afraid.
  2. 64:6 David gives us a picture of the bad men. They hide so nobody can see them. They are like people who shoot arrows at other people to hurt them. They think that nobody will ever find out what they have done.
  3. 64:7 Arrows are a picture of how God will punish them. The things that bad people do to hurt other people are like arrows. So God's punishment will also be like arrows.

To the director: A song of David.

64 God, listen to my complaint.
Save me from the terrible threats of my enemies!
2 Protect me from the secret plans of the wicked.
Hide me from that gang of evil people.
3 They sharpen their tongues to use like swords.
They aim their poisonous words like arrows.
4 Suddenly, from their hiding places, they let their arrows fly.
They shoot to kill innocent people.
5 They encourage each other to do wrong.
They talk about setting traps and say, “No one will see them here!
6 No one will discover our crime.
We have the perfect plan!”
Yes, people can be very tricky and hard to understand.
7 But suddenly, God will shoot his arrows,
and those wicked people will be hit.
8 He will use their own words against them,
and they will be destroyed.
Then everyone who sees them
will shake their heads in amazement.
9 People will see what God has done.
They will tell other people about him.
Then everyone will learn more about God.
They will learn to fear and respect him.
10 Good people are happy to serve the Lord .
They depend on him to protect them.
All those who want to do right will praise him!

64 Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:

3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:

4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.

5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?

6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.

8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.

9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.

10 The righteous shall be glad in the Lord , and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.

Prayer for Rescue from Secret Enemies.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

64 Hear my voice, God, in ( A ) my [ a ] complaint;
( B ) Protect my life from dread of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the ( C ) secret discussion of evildoers,
From the restlessness of ( D ) the workers of injustice,
3 Who ( E ) have sharpened their tongues like a sword.
They ( F ) aimed bitter speech as their arrows,
4 To ( G ) shoot [ b ] from concealment at the innocent;
Suddenly they shoot at him, and ( H ) do not fear.
5 They make firm for themselves an evil [ c ] purpose;
They [ d ] talk of ( I ) setting snares secretly;
They say, “ ( J ) Who can see them?”
6 They [ e ] devise injustices, saying ,
“We are [ f ] ready with a well-conceived plot”;
For the [ g ] ( K ) inward thought and the heart of a person are [ h ] deep.

7 But ( L ) God [ i ] will shoot an arrow at them;
Suddenly [ j ] they will be wounded.
8 So [ k ] they [ l ] will ( M ) make him stumble;
( N ) Their own tongue is against them;
All who see them will ( O ) shake their heads.
9 Then all people [ m ] will ( P ) fear,
And they [ n ] will ( Q ) declare the work of God,
And [ o ] will consider [ p ] what He has done.
10 The righteous person will be ( R ) glad in the Lord and ( S ) take refuge in Him;
And all the upright in heart will boast.

Psalm 64 [ a ]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

1 Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint; ( A )
protect my life from the threat of the enemy. ( B )

2 Hide me from the conspiracy ( C ) of the wicked, ( D )
from the plots of evildoers.
3 They sharpen their tongues like swords ( E )
and aim cruel words like deadly arrows. ( F )
4 They shoot from ambush at the innocent; ( G )
they shoot suddenly, without fear. ( H )

5 They encourage each other in evil plans,
they talk about hiding their snares; ( I )
they say, “Who will see it [ b ] ?” ( J )
6 They plot injustice and say,
“We have devised a perfect plan!”
Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.

7 But God will shoot them with his arrows;
they will suddenly be struck down.
8 He will turn their own tongues against them ( K )
and bring them to ruin;
all who see them will shake their heads ( L ) in scorn. ( M )
9 All people will fear; ( N )
they will proclaim the works of God
and ponder what he has done. ( O )

10 The righteous will rejoice in the Lord ( P )
and take refuge in him; ( Q )
all the upright in heart will glory in him! ( R )
