This is a song that David wrote for the music leader, Jeduthun.

Only God can save me!

62 I will be patient as I wait for God to help me.
He is the only one who can make me safe.
2 He alone is the strong rock
where I can hide and be safe.
With him, nothing will make me fall.

3 How long will you all continue to attack me?
I am just one man,
and you want to kill me!
You want to knock me down,
like a weak wall or a fence that is falling down. [ a ]
4 You only want to push me off my high place.
You love to tell lies to deceive people.
When you say words to bless people,
you are cursing them in your thoughts.
Selah.
5 I must be patient as I wait for God to help me.
He is the only one that I can trust for help.
6 He alone is the strong rock
where I can hide and be safe.
With him, nothing will make me fall.
7 It is God who has kept me safe,
and he has made me great.
He is the strong place
where I can hide and be safe.
8 Yes, my friends,
you should always trust in God!
Tell him about all the troubles in your thoughts.
God is our safe place to hide!
Selah.
9 People are only as light as a breath!
Whoever they are, they are not important.
If you try to weigh them, all together,
they weigh less than a breath of air. [ b ]
10 Do not cheat people,
or rob them to get money!
That will not give you anything
that you can trust to help you.
Even if you become very rich,
do not think it is important.
11 I have heard God speak his truth
once, no twice!
God has great strength.
12 And also, my Lord, you have a faithful love.
You pay back to everybody what they should get
for the things that they have done.

Footnotes

  1. 62:3 ‘fence’ A wall made of wood, not stones.
  2. 62:9 David understands that God can choose to do what he wants to do with people. They are not important enough to stand against God. All people need to trust God to save them because of his special love. They are not able to save themselves.

To the director, Jeduthun. [ a ] A song of David.

62 I must calm down and turn to God;
only he can rescue me.
2 He is my Rock, the only one who can save me.
He is my high place of safety, where no army can defeat me.

3 How long will you people attack me?
Do you all want to kill me?
I am like a leaning wall,
like a fence ready to fall.
4 You want only to destroy me,
to bring me down from my important position.
It makes you happy to tell lies about me.
In public, you say nice things,
but in private, you curse me. Selah

5 I must calm down and turn to God;
he is my only hope.
6 He is my Rock, the only one who can save me.
He is my high place of safety, where no army can defeat me.
7 My victory and honor come from God.
He is the mighty Rock, where I am safe.
8 People, always put your trust in God!
Tell him all your problems.
God is our place of safety. Selah

9 People cannot really help.
You cannot depend on them.
Compared to God, they are nothing—
no more than a gentle puff of air!
10 Don’t trust in your power to take things by force.
Don’t think you will gain anything by stealing.
And if you become wealthy,
don’t put your trust in riches.
11 God says there is one thing you can really depend on, and I believe it:
“Strength comes from God!”

12 My Lord, your love is real.
You reward all people for what they do.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 62:1 Psalm 62 Jeduthun Or “and to Jeduthun,” one of the three main temple musicians. See 1 Chron. 9:16; 16:38-42.

62 Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.

2 He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

3 How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.

4 They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.

5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

9 Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

10 Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

11 God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

12 Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.

God Alone a Refuge from Treachery and Oppression.

For the music director; [ a ] according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

62 ( A ) My soul waits in silence for God alone;
From Him ( B ) comes my salvation.
2 He alone is my ( C ) rock and my salvation,
My ( D ) stronghold; I will not be greatly shaken.

3 How long will you attack a man,
That you may murder him , all of you,
Like a ( E ) leaning wall, like a tottering fence?
4 They have planned only to thrust him down from his high position;
They ( F ) delight in falsehood;
They ( G ) bless with [ b ] their mouth,
But inwardly they curse. Selah

5 My soul, ( H ) wait in silence for God alone,
For my hope is from Him.
6 He alone is ( I ) my rock and my salvation,
My refuge; I will not be shaken.
7 My ( J ) salvation and my glory rest on God;
The rock of my strength, my ( K ) refuge is in God.
8 ( L ) Trust in Him at all times, you people;
( M ) Pour out your hearts before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah

9 People of ( N ) low standing are only ( O ) breath, and people of rank are a ( P ) lie;
In the ( Q ) balances they go up.
Together they are lighter than breath.
10 ( R ) Do not trust in oppression,
And do not vainly rely on ( S ) robbery;
If wealth increases, ( T ) do not set your heart on it .

11 God has ( U ) spoken [ c ] once;
[ d ] Twice I have heard this:
That ( V ) power belongs to God;
12 And faithfulness ( W ) is Yours, Lord,
For You ( X ) reward a person according to his work.

Psalm 62 [ a ]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

1 Truly my soul finds rest ( A ) in God; ( B )
my salvation comes from him.
2 Truly he is my rock ( C ) and my salvation; ( D )
he is my fortress, ( E ) I will never be shaken. ( F )

3 How long will you assault me?
Would all of you throw me down—
this leaning wall, ( G ) this tottering fence?
4 Surely they intend to topple me
from my lofty place;
they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
but in their hearts they curse. [ b ] ( H )

5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God; ( I )
my hope comes from him.
6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
7 My salvation and my honor depend on God [ c ] ;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge. ( J )

the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance, ( O ) they are nothing;
together they are only a breath.
10 Do not trust in extortion ( P )
or put vain hope in stolen goods; ( Q )
though your riches increase,
do not set your heart on them. ( R )

11 One thing God has spoken,
two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God, ( S )
12 and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”; ( T )
and, “You reward everyone
according to what they have done.” ( U )
