This is a song that David wrote.

Tell the music leader, ‘Use harps when you sing this song.’

David prays for health [ a ]

6 Lord , when you are angry,
please do not punish me.
2 I do not feel strong, Lord ,
so please be kind to me.
Lord , please make me well again.
Even my bones are shaking.
3 I am very frightened.
Lord , when will you do something to help me? [ b ]
4 Lord , turn back to me. Give me back my life.
Make me safe because of your faithful love.
5 If I die, I will no longer remember you.
Nobody can praise you in their grave!
6 I am crying so much that I have no more strength.
My bed becomes wet because I weep all night.
My tears run into my pillow. [ c ]
7 I am so sad that my eyes do not see well any more.
They are becoming weak because of all my enemies. [ d ]

8 Go away from me, you people who do wicked things!
Now the Lord has heard me when I weep. [ e ]
9 I asked the Lord to be kind and to help me.
Now he has answered me!
10 All my enemies will become ashamed!
They will go away from me in fear!
Shame will suddenly come to them!

Footnotes

  1. 6:1 David was not happy. He was ill. He thought that God had left him. This made David very sad. Sometimes we feel as David did. We think that God has left us. But God will help us if we continue to pray to him, as David did.
  2. 6:3 David is praying, ‘How long will my illness continue?’
  3. 6:6 A pillow is a cushion that you put your head on to sleep.
  4. 6:7 God does not answer David immediately. David cries until God answers him.
  5. 6:8 David is brave again when he knows that God has heard his prayer.

To the director: With stringed instruments, on the sheminith. A song of David.

6 Lord , don’t punish me.
Don’t correct me when you are so angry.
2 Lord , be kind to me.
I am sick and weak.
Heal me, Lord !
My bones are shaking.
3 I am trembling all over.
Lord , how long until you heal me? [ a ]
4 Lord , come back and make me strong again.
Save me because you are so loyal and kind.
5 If I am dead, I cannot sing about you.
Those in the grave don’t praise you.

6 Lord, I am so weak.
I cried to you all night.
My pillow is soaked;
my bed is dripping wet from my tears.
7 My enemies have caused me such sorrow
that my eyes are worn out from crying.

8 Go away, you wicked people,
because the Lord has heard my cries.
9 The Lord has heard my request for mercy.
The Lord has accepted my prayer.

10 All my enemies will be filled with fear and shame.
They will be sorry when disgrace suddenly comes upon them.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 6:3 Lord … heal me Literally, “As for you, Lord , how long?”

6 O Lord , rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

2 Have mercy upon me, O Lord ; for I am weak: O Lord , heal me; for my bones are vexed.

3 My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O Lord , how long?

4 Return, O Lord , deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies' sake.

5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?

6 I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.

7 Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies.

8 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping.

9 The Lord hath heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer.

10 Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: let them return and be ashamed suddenly.

I flood my couch with ( J ) my tears.
7 My ( K ) eye has wasted away with grief;

8 ( L ) Leave me, all you who practice injustice,
For the Lord ( M ) has heard the sound of my weeping.
9 The Lord ( N ) has heard my pleading,
The Lord ( O ) receives my prayer.
