- Psalm Chapter 50
50 God, the great God, the Lord , is speaking.
He is calling everybody on the earth,
from where the sun rises in the east,
to where it goes down in the west.
2 God is shining out from Zion,
that most beautiful place.
3 Our God is coming,
and he does not come quietly!
A fire burns up everything that is in front of him.
There is a great storm all round him.
4 He calls to the skies above,
and to the earth below.
They must watch while he judges his people.
5 He says, ‘Bring my people to me.
They are the people who offered sacrifices to me,
to agree our covenant.’
6 The skies above show that God is righteous,
and God himself is the judge.
Selah.
7 He says, ‘Listen to me, my people,
and I will speak to you.
I have something to say against you, Israel.
I am God, your God.
8 You offer sacrifices and burnt offerings to me all the time
but that is not why I speak against you.
9 I do not need a bull from your farm,
or goats from your fields.
10 All the wild animals of the forest belong to me!
All the cows on a thousand hills belong to me!
11 I know every bird in the mountains,
as well as all the insects.
12 Even if I did become hungry,
I would not tell you.
All the world belongs to me,
and everything that is in it.
13 Do I eat the meat of bulls? No!
Do I drink the blood of goats? No!
14 Say “thank you” to me as your offering.
Do whatever you have promised to do for me,
the Most High God.
15 Pray to me when you are in trouble.
Then I will rescue you,
and you will praise me.’ [ b ]
16 But God says this to the wicked people:
‘It is useless for you to speak about my commands,
or about my covenant.
17 For you hate my teaching,
and you refuse to accept my message.
18 If you see a robber,
you run to help him!
You become friends with adulterers.
19 You speak about evil things,
and you are always telling lies.
20 You say bad things about your own brother,
and you speak against your own family!
21 You did all these things,
and I said nothing.
So you thought that I was as bad as you are.
But now I am warning you!
I will tell you clearly
what you have done wrong.
22 So think carefully about this,
all you people who have turned away from me.
If not, I will tear you into pieces,
and nobody will be able to save you.
23 If anyone wants to praise me,
they should say “thank you” to me as their offering.
If anyone obeys my commands,
I will show them my power to save people.’
50 The Lord God Most Powerful has spoken.
He calls to everyone on earth, from where the sun rises to where it sets.
2 God appeared from Zion, the city of perfect beauty. [ a ]
3 Our God is coming and will not keep quiet.
Fire burns in front of him.
There is a great storm around him.
4 He tells the sky and the earth to be witnesses
as he judges his people.
5 He says, “My followers, gather around me.
Come, my worshipers, who made an agreement with me.”
6 God is the judge,
and the skies tell how fair he is. Selah
7 God says, “My people, listen to me!
People of Israel, I will show my evidence against you.
I am God, your God.
8 The problem I have with you is not your sacrifices
or the burnt offerings you bring to me everyday.
9 Why would I want more bulls from your barns
or goats from your pens?
10 I already own all the animals in the forest.
I own all the animals on a thousand hills.
11 I know every bird in the mountains.
Everything that moves in the fields is mine.
12 If I were hungry, I would not ask you for food.
I already own the world and everything in it.
13 I don’t eat the meat of bulls or drink the blood of goats.”
14 You made promises to God Most High, so give him what you promised.
Bring your sacrifices and thank offerings.
15 God says, “Call me when trouble comes.
I will help you, and you will honor me.”
16 But God says to the wicked,
“Stop quoting my laws!
Stop talking about my agreement!
17 You hate for me to tell you what to do.
You ignore what I say.
18 You see a thief and run to join him.
You jump into bed with those who commit adultery.
19 You say evil things and tell lies.
20 You sit around talking about people,
finding fault with your own brothers.
21 When you did these things, I said nothing.
So you thought that I [ b ] was just like you.
But I will not be quiet any longer.
I will correct you and make clear what I have against you.
22 You people who have forgotten God,
understand what I am telling you,
or I will tear you apart,
and no one will be able to save you!
23 Whoever gives a thank offering shows me honor.
And whoever decides to live right will see my power to save.”
50 The mighty God, even the Lord , hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.
3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.
4 He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.
5 Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.
7 Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.
8 I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.
9 I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.
10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.
11 I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.
12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.
13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:
15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
16 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?
17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and casteth my words behind thee.
18 When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.
19 Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.
20 Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.
21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
22 Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.
23 Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.
50 ( A ) The Mighty One, God, the Lord , has spoken
And summoned the earth, ( B ) from [ b ] the rising of the sun to its setting.
2 Out of Zion, ( C ) the perfection of beauty,
God ( D ) has shone.
3 May our God ( E ) come and not keep silent;
( F ) Fire devours before Him,
And a storm is violently ( G ) raging around Him.
4 He ( H ) summons the heavens above,
And the earth, to judge His people:
5 “Gather My ( I ) godly ones to Me,
Those who have made a ( J ) covenant with Me by ( K ) sacrifice.”
6 And the ( L ) heavens declare His righteousness,
For ( M ) God Himself is judge. Selah
7 “ ( N ) Hear, My people, and I will speak;
Israel, I will testify [ c ] against you;
I am God, ( O ) your God.
8 I do ( P ) not rebuke you for your sacrifices,
And your burnt offerings are continually before Me.
9 I will not take a ( Q ) bull from your house,
Nor male goats from your folds.
10 For ( R ) every animal of the forest is Mine,
The cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know every ( S ) bird of the mountains,
And everything that moves in the field is [ d ] Mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
For the ( T ) world is Mine, and [ e ] everything it contains.
13 Shall I eat the flesh of [ f ] ( U ) bulls
Or drink the blood of male goats?
14 Offer God ( V ) a sacrifice of thanksgiving
And ( W ) pay your vows to the Most High;
15 ( X ) Call upon Me on the day of trouble;
I will ( Y ) rescue you, and you will ( Z ) honor Me.”
16 But to the wicked God says,
“What right do you have to tell of My statutes
And to take ( AA ) My covenant in your mouth?
17 For you yourself ( AB ) hate discipline,
And you ( AC ) throw My words behind you.
18 When you see a thief, you ( AD ) become friends with him,
And [ g ] you ( AE ) associate with adulterers.
19 You [ h ] ( AF ) let your mouth loose in evil,
And your ( AG ) tongue harnesses deceit.
20 You sit and ( AH ) speak against your brother;
You slander your own mother’s son.
21 These things you have done and ( AI ) I kept silent;
You thought that I was just like you;
I will ( AJ ) rebuke you and present the case before your eyes.
22 “Now consider this, you who ( AK ) forget God,
Or I will ( AL ) tear you in pieces, and there will be no one to save you .
23 He who ( AM ) offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me;
And to him who ( AN ) sets his way properly
I will ( AO ) show the salvation of God.”
1 The Mighty One, God, the Lord , ( A )
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to where it sets. ( B )
2 From Zion, ( C ) perfect in beauty, ( D )
God shines forth. ( E )
3 Our God comes ( F )
and will not be silent; ( G )
a fire devours ( H ) before him, ( I )
and around him a tempest ( J ) rages.
4 He summons the heavens above,
and the earth, ( K ) that he may judge his people: ( L )
5 “Gather to me this consecrated people, ( M )
who made a covenant ( N ) with me by sacrifice.”
6 And the heavens proclaim ( O ) his righteousness,
for he is a God of justice. [ a ] [ b ] ( P )
7 “Listen, my people, and I will speak;
I will testify ( Q ) against you, Israel:
I am God, your God. ( R )
8 I bring no charges ( S ) against you concerning your sacrifices
or concerning your burnt offerings, ( T ) which are ever before me.
9 I have no need of a bull ( U ) from your stall
or of goats ( V ) from your pens, ( W )
10 for every animal of the forest ( X ) is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills. ( Y )
11 I know every bird ( Z ) in the mountains,
and the insects in the fields ( AA ) are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
for the world ( AB ) is mine, and all that is in it. ( AC )
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
or drink the blood of goats?
14 “Sacrifice thank offerings ( AD ) to God,
fulfill your vows ( AE ) to the Most High, ( AF )
15 and call ( AG ) on me in the day of trouble; ( AH )
I will deliver ( AI ) you, and you will honor ( AJ ) me.”
16 But to the wicked person, God says:
“What right have you to recite my laws
or take my covenant ( AK ) on your lips? ( AL )
17 You hate ( AM ) my instruction
and cast my words behind ( AN ) you.
18 When you see a thief, you join ( AO ) with him;
you throw in your lot with adulterers. ( AP )
19 You use your mouth for evil
and harness your tongue to deceit. ( AQ )
20 You sit and testify against your brother ( AR )
and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent, ( AS )
you thought I was exactly [ c ] like you.
But I now arraign ( AT ) you
and set my accusations ( AU ) before you.
