- Psalm Chapter 5
5 Lord , listen to what I say to you.
I am upset, so think about what I am saying.
2 My King and my God, listen to my voice.
I am asking you to help me.
I am praying to you!
3 Lord , every morning you listen to my voice.
At sunrise I will turn to you for help,
and I will wait for you to answer. [ b ]
4 My God, you do not like anything that is bad.
Evil people cannot live near you.
5 Proud people cannot stand in front of you.
God, you hate everyone who does evil things.
6 You destroy those who tell lies.
The Lord hates murderers,
and those who deceive others. [ c ]
7 But I will come into your house,
because of your faithful love.
I will bend low in your holy temple,
and I will worship you.
8 Lord , help me to follow your right way.
My enemies are waiting to attack me.
Show the right way clearly to me,
so that I do not go the wrong way.
9 My enemies never speak what is true.
They only want to destroy people.
Their mouth has the smell of an open grave. [ d ]
Their tongues say nice things,
but they are all lies!
10 God, say that they are guilty!
Let their own wicked ideas bring punishment to them.
Send them away because they do so many bad things.
Yes, they have turned against you.
11 Please make people who turn to you happy.
Make them always sing with joy,
because you keep them safe.
Take care of those who are faithful to you.
Then they will be really happy.
12 Lord , you bless those who live in a right way.
Your love is like a shield that keeps them safe.
5 Lord , listen to me
and understand what I am trying to say.
2 My God and King,
listen to my prayer.
3 Every morning, Lord , I lay my gifts before you
and look to you for help.
And every morning you hear my prayers.
4 God, you don’t want evil people near you.
They cannot stay in your presence. [ b ]
5 Fools [ c ] cannot come near you.
You hate those who do evil.
6 You destroy those who tell lies.
Lord , you hate those who make secret plans to hurt others.
7 But by your great mercy, I can enter your house.
I can worship in your holy Temple with fear and respect for you.
8 Lord , show me your right way of living,
and make it easy for me to follow.
People are looking for my weaknesses,
so show me how you want me to live.
9 My enemies never tell the truth.
They only want to destroy people.
Their words come from mouths that are like open graves.
They use their lying tongues to deceive others. [ d ]
10 Punish them, God!
Let them be caught in their own traps.
They have turned against you,
so punish them for their many crimes.
11 But let those who trust in you be happy forever.
Protect and strengthen those who love your name.
12 Lord , when you bless good people,
you surround them with your love, like a large shield that protects them.
5 Give ear to my words, O Lord , consider my meditation.
2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.
3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord ; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
8 Lead me, O Lord , in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.
9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.
11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.
12 For thou, Lord , wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
5 ( A ) Listen to my words, Lord ,
Consider my ( B ) sighing.
2 Listen to ( C ) the sound of my cry for help, ( D ) my King and my God,
For to You I pray.
3 In the morning, Lord , [ b ] You will hear my voice;
In the ( E ) morning I will present my [ c ] prayer to You and be on the ( F ) watch.
4 For You are not a God ( G ) who takes pleasure in wickedness;
( H ) No evil can dwell with You.
5 The ( I ) boastful will not ( J ) stand before Your eyes;
You ( K ) hate all who do injustice.
6 You ( L ) destroy those who speak lies;
The Lord loathes ( M ) the person of bloodshed and deceit.
7 But as for me, ( N ) by Your abundant graciousness I will enter Your house,
[ d ] At Your holy temple I will ( O ) bow in ( P ) reverence for You.
8 Lord , ( Q ) lead me ( R ) in Your righteousness ( S ) because of my enemies;
Make Your way [ e ] straight before me.
9 For there is ( T ) nothing [ f ] trustworthy in [ g ] their mouth;
Their ( U ) inward part is destruction itself .
Their ( V ) throat is an open grave;
They [ h ] flatter with their tongue.
10 Make them pay, God;
( W ) Have them fall by their own schemes!
( X ) Scatter them in the multitude of their wrongdoings,
For they are ( Y ) rebellious against You.
11 But ( Z ) rejoice, all who ( AA ) take refuge in You,
Sing for joy forever!
And [ i ] may You ( AB ) shelter them,
That those who ( AC ) love Your name may rejoice in You.
12 For You ( AD ) bless the righteous person, Lord ,
You ( AE ) surround him with favor as with a shield.
1 Listen ( A ) to my words, Lord ,
consider my lament. ( B )
2 Hear my cry for help, ( C )
my King and my God, ( D )
for to you I pray.
3 In the morning, ( E ) Lord , you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you
and wait expectantly. ( F )
4 For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness;
with you, evil people ( G ) are not welcome.
5 The arrogant ( H ) cannot stand ( I )
in your presence.
You hate ( J ) all who do wrong;
6 you destroy those who tell lies. ( K )
The bloodthirsty and deceitful
you, Lord , detest.
7 But I, by your great love,
can come into your house;
in reverence ( L ) I bow down ( M )
toward your holy temple. ( N )
8 Lead me, Lord , in your righteousness ( O )
because of my enemies—
make your way straight ( P ) before me.
9 Not a word from their mouth can be trusted;
their heart is filled with malice.
Their throat is an open grave; ( Q )
with their tongues they tell lies. ( R )
10 Declare them guilty, O God!
Let their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish them for their many sins, ( S )
for they have rebelled ( T ) against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
let them ever sing for joy. ( U )
Spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name ( V ) may rejoice in you. ( W )
