49 Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:

² Both low and high, rich and poor, together.

³ My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

⁴ I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

⁵ Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

⁶ They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

⁷ None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

⁸ (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

⁹ That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

¹⁰ For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.

¹¹ Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

¹² Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

¹³ This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

¹⁵ But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

¹⁶ Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

¹⁷ For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.

¹⁸ Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.

¹⁹ He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.

²⁰ Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

49 Listen to this, all you nations.
Pay attention, all you people on earth.
² Everyone, rich and poor, listen to me.
³ I have some very wise words for you.
My thoughts will give you understanding.
⁴ I listened to these sayings.
And now, with my harp, I will sing and make the hidden meaning clear.

⁵ Why should I be afraid when trouble comes?
There is no need to fear when evil enemies surround me.
⁶ They think their wealth will protect them.
They brag about how rich they are.
⁷ But no one has enough to buy back a life,
and you cannot bribe ^{[ a ]} God.
⁸ You will never get enough money
to pay for your own life.
⁹ You will never have enough
to buy the right to live forever
and keep your body out of the grave.
¹⁰ Look, the wise die the same as fools and stupid people. ^{[ b ]}
They die and leave their wealth to others.
¹¹ The grave will be their new home forever.
And how much land they owned will not make any difference.
¹² People might be wealthy, but they cannot stay here forever.
They will die like the animals.
¹³ That is what happens to all who trust in themselves
and to anyone who accepts their way of life. Selah
¹⁴ They are just like sheep, but the grave will be their pen.
Death will be their shepherd.
When morning comes, the good people will enjoy victory,
as the bodies of the proud slowly rot in the grave,
far away from their fancy houses.

¹⁵ But God will pay the price to save me from the grave.
He will take me to be with him. Selah

¹⁶ Don’t be afraid of people just because they are rich.
Don’t be afraid of people just because they have big, fancy houses.
¹⁷ They will not take anything with them when they die.
They will not take their wealth with them.
¹⁸ A wealthy man might tell himself how well he has done in life.
And other people might praise him.
¹⁹ But the time will come for him to die and go to his ancestors.
And he will never again see the light of day.
²⁰ Wealthy people don’t seem to understand
that they will die like the animals.

49 Hear this, all ye peoples;
Give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world,
² Both low and high,
Rich and poor together.
³ My mouth shall speak wisdom;
And the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

And it faileth for ever),
⁹ That he should still live alway,
That he should not see ^{[ b ]} corruption.
¹⁰ For ^{[ c ]} he shall see it. Wise men die;
The fool and the brutish alike perish,
And leave their wealth to others.
¹¹ Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever,
And their dwelling-places to all generations;
They call their lands after their own names.

That there be no habitation for it.
¹⁵ But God will redeem my soul from the ^{[ g ]} power of Sheol;
For he will receive me. Selah

Listen, all you inhabitants of the world,
² both low and high,
rich and poor together.
³ My mouth will speak words of wisdom.
My heart will utter understanding.
⁴ I will incline my ear to a proverb.
I will solve my riddle on the harp.
⁵ Why should I fear in the days of evil,
when iniquity at my heels surrounds me?
⁶ Those who trust in their wealth,
and boast in the multitude of their riches—
⁷ none of them can by any means redeem his brother,
nor give God a ransom for him.
⁸ For the redemption of their life is costly,
no payment is ever enough,
⁹ that he should live on forever,
that he should not see corruption.
¹⁰ For he sees that wise men die;
likewise the fool and the senseless perish,
and leave their wealth to others.
¹¹ Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever,
and their dwelling places to all generations.
They name their lands after themselves.
¹² But man, despite his riches, doesn’t endure.
He is like the animals that perish.

¹³ This is the destiny of those who are foolish,
and of those who approve their sayings. Selah.
¹⁴ They are appointed as a flock for Sheol. ^{[ a ]}
Death shall be their shepherd.
The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning.
Their beauty shall decay in Sheol, ^{[ b ]}
far from their mansion.
¹⁵ But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, ^{[ c ]}
for he will receive me. Selah.
¹⁶ Don’t be afraid when a man is made rich,
when the glory of his house is increased;
¹⁷ for when he dies he will carry nothing away.
His glory won’t descend after him.
¹⁸ Though while he lived he blessed his soul—
and men praise you when you do well for yourself—
¹⁹ he shall go to the generation of his fathers.
They shall never see the light.
²⁰ A man who has riches without understanding,
is like the animals that perish.

⁵ Why do I fear in days of evil? The iniquity of my supplanters doth compass me.

⁶ Those trusting on their wealth, And in the multitude of their riches, Do shew themselves foolish.

⁷ A brother doth no one at all ransom, He doth not give to God his atonement.

⁸ And precious [is] the redemption of their soul, And it hath ceased -- to the age.

⁹ And still he liveth for ever, He seeth not the pit.

¹⁰ For he seeth wise men die, Together the foolish and brutish perish, And have left to others their wealth.

¹¹ Their heart [is]: Their houses [are] to the age, Their tabernacles to all generations. They proclaimed their names over the lands.

¹² And man in honour doth not remain, He hath been like the beasts, they have been cut off.

¹³ This their way [is] folly for them, And their posterity with their sayings are pleased. Selah.

¹⁴ As sheep for Sheol they have set themselves, Death doth afflict them, And the upright rule over them in the morning, And their form [is] for consumption. Sheol [is] a dwelling for him.

¹⁵ Only, God doth ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol, For He doth receive me. Selah.

¹⁶ Fear not, when one maketh wealth, When the honour of his house is abundant,

¹⁷ For at his death he receiveth nothing, His honour goeth not down after him.

¹⁸ For his soul in his life he blesseth, (And they praise thee when thou dost well for thyself.)

¹⁹ It cometh to the generation of his fathers, For ever they see not the light.

²⁰ Man in honour, who understandest not, Hath been like the beasts, they have been cut off!

49 A psalm for Asaph. The God of gods, the Lord hath spoken: and he hath called the earth. From the rising of the sun, to the going down thereof:

² Out of Sion the loveliness of his beauty.

³ God shall come manifestly: our God shall come, and shall not keep silence. A fire shall burn before him: and a mighty tempest shall be round about him.

⁴ He shall call heaven from above, and the earth, to judge his people.

⁵ Gather ye together his saints to him: who set his covenant before sacrifices.

⁶ And the heavens shall declare his justice: for God is judge.

⁷ Hear, O my people, and I will speak: O Israel, and I will testify to thee: I am God, thy God.

⁸ I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices: and thy burnt offerings are always in my sight.

⁹ I will not take calves out of thy house: nor he goats out of thy flocks.

¹⁰ For all the beasts of the woods are mine: the cattle on the hills, and the oxen.

¹¹ I know all the fowls of the air: and with me is the beauty of the field.

¹² If I should be hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

¹³ Shall I eat the flesh of bullocks? or shall I drink the blood of goats?

¹⁴ Offer to God the sacrifice of praise: and pay thy vows to the most High.

¹⁵ And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

¹⁶ But to the sinner God hath said: Why dost thou declare my justices, and take my covenant in thy mouth?

¹⁷ Seeing thou hast hated discipline: and hast cast my words behind thee.

¹⁸ If thou didst see a thief thou didst run with him: and with adulterers thou hast been a partaker.

¹⁹ Thy mouth hath abounded with evil, and thy tongue framed deceits.

²⁰ Sitting thou didst speak against thy brother, and didst lay a scandal against thy mother's son:

²¹ These things hast thou done, and I was silent. Thou thoughtest unjustly that I should be like to thee: but I will reprove thee, and set before thy face.

²² Understand these things, you that forget God; lest he snatch you away, and there be none to deliver you.

²³ The sacrifice of praise shall glorify me: and there is the way by which I will shew him the salvation of God.
