This is a special song that the sons of Korah wrote for the music leader. Sing it to the music that they call ‘Lilies.’

A love song ^{[ a ]}

45 This beautiful song makes my heart very happy.
I will sing this special poem to the king.
My voice is ready to sing it very well,
as well as a clever writer can write with a pen.

² You are the most handsome man that there is.
You speak kind words in a beautiful way.
And so God will continue to bless you for ever.
³ Brave soldier, wear your sword at your side!
Show what a great king you are!
⁴ Wear your royal clothes
and ride out to win against your enemies!
Win the war on behalf of truth and justice!
Then your strong right hand will do powerful things!
⁵ Your sharp arrows will cut into the heart of your enemies.
Nations will fall down under your feet.
⁶ God, you will continue to rule as king
always and for ever.
Your authority as king will bring justice to your people.
⁷ You love people to do what is right,
and you hate anything that is evil.
So God, your God, has chosen you
to be greater than all your people.
He has put special olive oil on you,
to make you happy.
⁸ All your clothes have the beautiful smell
of myrrh, aloes and cassia.
You hear the music of stringed instruments
that comes from beautiful palaces.
That makes you happy.
⁹ The daughters of kings are among your visitors.
Your royal bride stands at your right hand.
She is wearing gold from Ophir.

¹⁰ Royal daughter, listen to me.
Listen carefully to what I am saying.
Forget your people and your family.
¹¹ You are very beautiful
and the king will want to be with you.
He is your master, so respect him.
¹² Rich people will come from Tyre to give gifts to you.
They will want you to help them.

¹³ The king's bride is in the palace,
and she looks beautiful!
Her dress has gold threads in it. ^{[ b ]}
¹⁴ Now they lead her to the king in her beautiful clothes.
Her young friends follow after her
to bring her to the king.
¹⁵ They are very happy as they walk together
and they go into the king's palace.

¹⁶ You will have sons to become kings,
as your ancestors were kings before you.
You will make them princes
to rule over all the land.
¹⁷ In future years I will cause people to remember
that you are a great king!
Then people will praise you always and for ever.

45:1 The king in verses 2-9 was the king of Judah or Israel. A king like this was called ‘Messiah’, because God had chosen him to rule his people. The queen in verses 10-15 was the woman that the king married. Christians also know that Jesus is the true Messiah. His ‘queen’ or ‘bride’ is the church, the people that belong to him. Verses 2-9 are words that the writer says to the king. Verses 10-12 are words that the writer says to the queen.
45:13 ‘threads’ are very thin strings of material.

45 Beautiful thoughts fill my mind
as I speak these lines for the king.
These words come from my tongue
as from the pen of a skilled writer.

² You are more handsome than anyone,
and you say such pleasant things.
So God will always bless you.
³ Put on your sword, mighty warrior,
so impressive in your splendid uniform.
⁴ Go out in your greatness to win the victory for what is true and right.
Let us see the amazing things you can do with your powerful right arm. ^{[ b ]}
⁵ Your sharp arrows will go deep into the hearts of your enemies,
who will fall to the ground in front of you.
⁶ God, ^{[ c ]} your kingdom will last forever.
You use your authority for justice.
⁷ You love what is right and hate what is wrong.
So God, your God, chose you to be king,
giving you more joy and honor than anyone like you. ^{[ d ]}
⁸ From your clothes comes the wonderful smell of myrrh, aloes, and cassia.
In palaces decorated with ivory, you enjoy the music of stringed instruments.
⁹ Here are ladies of honor, daughters of kings.
Your bride ^{[ e ]} stands at your right side, wearing a gown decorated with the finest gold.

¹⁰ My lady, ^{[ f ]} listen to me.
Listen carefully and understand me.
Forget your people and your father’s family,
¹¹ so that the king will be pleased with your beauty.
He will be your new husband, ^{[ g ]}
so you must honor him.
¹² People from Tyre will bring you gifts.
Their richest people will try to win your friendship.

¹³ The princess is so beautiful in her gown,
like a pearl set in gold.
¹⁴ Clothed in beauty, she is led to the king,
followed by her bridesmaids.
¹⁵ Filled with joy and excitement,
they enter into the king’s palace.

¹⁶ Your sons will be kings like their ancestors.
You will make them rulers throughout the land.
¹⁷ You will be famous for generations.
People will praise you forever and ever.

Psalm 45:4 right arm This pictures God as a warrior-king. The right arm is a symbol of his power and authority.
Psalm 45:6 God This might be a song to God as king. Or here, the writer might be using the word “God” as a title for the king.
Psalm 45:7 chose … anyone like you Literally, “anointed you with the oil of gladness above your companions.” This refers to the special oil used in the dedication of a new priest or king.
Psalm 45:9 bride Or “queen.”
Psalm 45:10 My lady Literally, “Daughter.”
Psalm 45:11 husband Or “master.”

45 My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

² Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.

³ Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty.

⁴ And in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.

⁵ Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; whereby the people fall under thee.

⁶ Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.

⁷ Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

⁸ All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.

⁹ Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir.

¹⁰ Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house;

¹¹ So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.

¹² And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat thy favour.

¹³ The king's daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold.

¹⁴ She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee.

¹⁵ With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king's palace.

¹⁶ Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children, whom thou mayest make princes in all the earth.

¹⁷ I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.

45 My heart is moved with a good theme;
I ^{[ c ]} address my ^{[ d ]} verses to the ^{[ e ]} King;
My tongue is the pen of ^{( A )} a ready writer.
² You are the most handsome of the sons of mankind;
^{( B )} Grace is poured ^{[ f ]} upon Your lips;
Therefore God has ^{( C )} blessed You forever.

³ Strap ^{( D )} Your sword on Your thigh, ^{[ g ]} ^{( E )} Mighty One,
In Your splendor and majesty!
⁴ And in Your majesty ride on victoriously,
For the cause of truth, ^{( F )} humility, and righteousness;
Let Your ^{( G )} right hand teach You ^{[ h ]} awesome things.
⁵ Your ^{( H )} arrows are sharp;
The ^{( I )} peoples fall under You;
Your arrows are ^{( J )} in the heart of the King’s enemies.

⁶ ^{( K )} Your throne, God, is forever and ever;
^{( L )} The scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of justice.
⁷ You have ^{( M )} loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
Therefore God, Your God, has ^{( N )} anointed You
With the oil of joy above Your companions.
⁸ All Your garments are fragrant with ^{( O )} myrrh, aloes, and cassia;
From ivory palaces ^{( P )} stringed instruments have made You joyful.
⁹ Kings’ daughters are among ^{( Q )} Your noble women;
At Your ^{( R )} right hand stands the queen in ^{( S )} gold from Ophir.

¹⁰ Listen, daughter, look and incline your ear:
^{( T )} Forget your people and your father’s house;
¹¹ Then the King will crave your beauty.
Because He is your ^{( U )} Lord, ^{( V )} bow down to Him.
¹² The daughter of ^{( W )} Tyre will come with a gift;
The ^{( X )} wealthy among the people will seek your favor.

¹³ The King’s daughter is all glorious within;
Her clothing is ^{( Y )} interwoven with gold.
¹⁴ She will be ^{( Z )} brought to the King ^{( AA )} in colorful garments;
The ^{( AB )} virgins, her companions who follow her,
Will be brought to You.
¹⁵ They will be brought with joy and rejoicing;
They will enter into the King’s palace.

¹⁶ In place of your fathers will be your sons;
You shall make them princes in all the earth.
¹⁷ I will make ^{( AC )} Your name known among all generations;
Therefore the peoples ^{( AD )} will praise You forever and ever.
