David wrote this song for the music leader.

A prayer [ a ]

41 If someone is kind to poor people,
God blesses him.
When he is in trouble,
the Lord rescues him.
2 The Lord keeps him safe.
The Lord saves his life!
God causes him to be happy
here in the land where he lives.
The Lord will not put him under the power of his enemies.
3 The Lord takes care of him
when he is ill in bed.
Whenever he is ill,
you will make him completely well again.

4 I said, ‘ Lord be kind to me
and forgive me.
I have done wrong things against you,
but please make me well again.’
5 My enemies say cruel things about me.
They say, ‘Surely he must die soon!
Then everyone will forget about him.’
6 When they come to see me,
they say that they are my friends.
But they think of ways to make me ashamed.
When they leave,
they tell everyone bad things about me.
7 All the people who hate me
insult me to other people.
My enemies make plans to hurt me.
8 They say, ‘He has a dangerous disease.
He will never get up from his bed.’
9 Even my special friend has turned against me.
He was someone that I trusted.
I often ate food with him in my home. [ b ]

10 But you, Lord , please be kind to me.
Raise me up to be well again.
Then I can punish my enemies as they have punished me. [ c ]
11 They have not won against me,
so I know that you are pleased with me!
12 You continue to help me because I do what is right.
You will let me stay near to you for ever.

13 Let us all praise the Lord ,
who is Israel's great God!
Yes, praise him now and for ever!
Amen! Amen!

Footnotes

  1. 41:1 David wrote this psalm when he was ill. He says he was ill because he had not obeyed God's laws. When David was ill, many people came to visit him. David thought that they were his friends, but they were not. They wanted him to die so that there would be a new king. One of David's visitors was his best friend, but he was not kind to David. It is only God who can really take care of David.
  2. 41:9 Jesus used these words to speak about Judas. See John 13:18 .
  3. 41:10 David was king, so it was his job to punish his enemies for the bad things that they had done to him.

To the director: A song of David.

41 Those who help the poor succeed will get many blessings. [ a ]
When trouble comes, the Lord will save them.
2 The Lord will protect them and save their lives.
He will bless them in this land.
He will not let their enemies harm them.
3 When they are sick in bed,
the Lord will give them strength and make them well!

4 I say, “ Lord , be kind to me.
I sinned against you, but forgive me and make me well.”
5 My enemies say bad things about me.
They ask, “When will he die and be forgotten?”
6 If they come to see me,
they don’t say what they are really thinking.
They come to gather a little gossip
and then go to spread their rumors.
7 Those who hate me whisper about me.
They think the worst about me.
8 They say, “He did something wrong.
That is why he is sick.
He will never get well.”
9 My best friend, the one I trusted,
the one who ate with me—even he has turned against me.
10 Lord , please be kind to me.
Let me get up, and I will pay them back.
11 Don’t let my enemy defeat me.
Then I will know that you care for me.
12 I was innocent and you supported me.
You let me stand and serve you forever.

13 Praise the Lord , the God of Israel.
He always was, and he always will be.

Amen and Amen!

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 41:1 Or “Those who teach the poor will be very fortunate.”

41 Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.

2 The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.

3 The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

4 I said, Lord , be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.

5 Mine enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish?

6 And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad, he telleth it.

7 All that hate me whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt.

8 An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.

9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

10 But thou, O Lord , be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them.

11 By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.

12 And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever.

13 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.

The Psalmist in Sickness Complains of Enemies and False Friends.

4 As for me, I said, “ Lord , be gracious to me;

5 My enemies ( H ) speak evil against me,

6 And [ e ] when he comes to see me , he ( I ) speaks [ f ] empty words;
His heart gathers wickedness to itself;
When he goes outside, he tells it.
7 All who hate me whisper together against me;
They ( J ) plot my harm against me, saying ,
8 “A wicked thing is poured out [ g ] upon him,
So that when he lies down, he will ( K ) not get up again.”
9 Even my [ h ] ( L ) close friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.

10 But You, Lord , be gracious to me and ( M ) raise me up,
That I may repay them.
11 By this I know that ( N ) You are pleased with me,
Because ( O ) my enemy does not shout in triumph over me.
