This is a special song that David wrote.

Tell God about your sins [ a ]

32 When God has forgiven someone's sins,
they are truly happy!
They may have turned against God,
but when God forgives them, they are happy.
2 They may have done something bad,
but when the Lord says, ‘Not guilty!’,
he has truly blessed them.
They are happy because they no longer try to hide their sins.

3 When I said nothing to God about my sin,
my whole body became weak.
I cried all the time because of the pain.
4 In the day and in the night,
you punished me very much.
It seemed as if the hot sun was taking away my strength.
Selah.
5 Then I told you about my sins.
I did not try to hide the bad things that I had done.
I said, ‘I will tell the Lord
about the things that I have done against him.’
When I did that, you forgave my sins.
Selah.
6 Because of this, all your own people should pray to you.
They should pray while they still have the chance. [ b ]
Then, when danger comes to them like a river of deep water,
they will still be safe.
7 Yes, Lord , you are a place where I can hide.
You will keep me safe from trouble.
I will hear happy songs all around me,
because you save your people from danger.
Selah.
8 I will teach you the right way to live.
I will be your guide
and I will take care of you. [ c ]
9 Do not be like a silly horse, or a mule.
You have to use a rope to show them which way to go.
Without that, they will not obey you.
10 Wicked people will receive a lot of trouble and pain.
But if anyone trusts in the Lord ,
they will know that God always loves them.
11 So all you people who belong to the Lord ,
praise him and be happy!
All of you who are good, honest people,
shout aloud because you are so happy!

Footnotes

  1. 32:1 This psalm helps us to tell God when we have done something that is wrong. God already knows about it, but he will not forgive us until we show him that we are sorry. David knew that he had done bad things that did not please God. When he knew that God had forgiven him, he could be happy again. There are other Psalms which say ‘sorry’ to God. See Psalms 38 ; 51 ; 102 ; 130 ; 143 .
  2. 32:6 ‘while they still have the chance’ or ‘when they know about their sin’.
  3. 32:8 These are God's words. He is promising to take care of David.

A maskil of David.

32 It is a great blessing
when people are forgiven for the wrongs they have done,
when their sins are erased. [ a ]
2 It is a great blessing
when the Lord says they are not guilty,
when they don’t try to hide their sins.

3 Lord, I prayed to you again and again,
but I did not talk about my sins.
So I only became weaker and more miserable.
4 Every day you made life harder for me.
I became like a dry land in the hot summertime. Selah

5 But then I decided to confess my sins to the Lord .
I stopped hiding my guilt and told you about my sins.
And you forgave them all! Selah

6 That is why your loyal followers pray to you while there is still time.
Then when trouble rises like a flood, it will not reach them.
7 You are a hiding place for me.
You protect me from my troubles.
You surround me and protect me,
so I sing about the way you saved me. Selah

8 The Lord says, “I will teach you
and guide you in the way you should live.
I will watch over you and be your guide.
9 Don’t be like a stupid horse or mule that will not come to you
unless you put a bit in its mouth and pull it with reins.”

10 Many pains will come to the wicked,
but the Lord ’s faithful love will surround those who trust in him.
11 Good people, rejoice and be very happy in the Lord .
All you who want to do right, rejoice!

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 32:1 erased Or “covered over” or “atoned.”

32 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

2 Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

3 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.

4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

5 I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord ; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

6 For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

7 Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord , mercy shall compass him about.

11 Be glad in the Lord , and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

Blessedness of Forgiveness and of Trust in God.

A Psalm of David. A [ a ] Maskil.

32 ( A ) How blessed is he whose wrongdoing is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered!
2 How blessed is a person whose guilt the Lord ( B ) does not take into account,
And in whose spirit there is ( C ) no deceit!

3 When ( D ) I kept silent about my sin , ( E ) my [ b ] body wasted away
Through my [ c ] ( F ) groaning all day long.
4 For day and night ( G ) Your hand was heavy upon me;
My [ d ] ( H ) vitality failed as with the dry heat of summer. Selah
5 I ( I ) acknowledged my sin to You,
And I ( J ) did not hide my guilt;
I said, “ ( K ) I will confess my wrongdoings to the Lord ”;
And You ( L ) forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah
6 Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You [ e ] ( M ) in a time when You may be found;
Certainly ( N ) in a flood of great waters, they will not reach him.
7 You are ( O ) my hiding place; You ( P ) keep me from trouble;
You surround me with [ f ] ( Q ) songs of deliverance. Selah

8 I will ( R ) instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go;
I will advise you ( S ) with My eye upon you.
9 Do not be ( T ) like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding,
Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check,
Otherwise they will not come near to you.
10 The ( U ) sorrows of the wicked are many,
But ( V ) the one who trusts in the Lord , goodness will surround him.
11 Be ( W ) glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones;
And shout for joy, all you who are ( X ) upright in heart.
