BibleStudyIt Psalm 2
- Psalm Chapter 2
2 Why are nations making plans to turn against the Lord ?
All their plans will fail!
2 Kings and rulers decide to work together,
to fight against the Lord
and the king that he has chosen.
3 They say, ‘We will not accept their authority over us!
We will get free from their power!’ [ b ]
4 The Lord who sits on his throne in heaven laughs at them.
He says that their plans are useless.
5 Then he becomes very angry and he frightens them.
He warns them with strong words and he says,
6 ‘I have put my king on his throne in Zion. [ c ]
I have put him on my holy mountain.’
7 I will tell you what the Lord has promised to me, his king.
He said to me, ‘You are my son.
Yes, today I have become your father! [ d ]
8 Ask me and see what I will do!
I will give you all the nations on the earth.
They will all belong to you.
9 You will break them with an iron sceptre,
as if they are clay pots.’
10 So, you kings, think carefully!
You who rule the nations of the world, learn this lesson:
11 Respect the Lord and serve him.
Enjoy his rule with fear!
12 Bend down low in front of his son!
If not, the Lord will be angry.
He will quickly become very angry.
You will suddenly die!
But as for those who serve the Lord as their king,
he blesses them and he takes care of them all.
2 Why are the nations so angry?
Why are the people making such foolish plans?
2 Their kings and leaders join together
to fight against the Lord and his chosen king. [ a ]
3 They say, “Let’s rebel against them.
Let’s break free from them!”
4 But the one who rules in heaven laughs at them.
The Lord makes fun of them.
5 He speaks to them in anger,
and it fills them with fear.
6 He says, “I have chosen this man to be king,
and he will rule on Zion, my holy mountain.”
7 Let me tell you about the Lord ’s agreement:
He said to me, “Today I have become your father, [ b ]
and you are my son.
8 If you ask, I will give you the nations.
Everyone on earth will be yours.
9 You will rule over them with great power.
You will scatter your enemies like broken pieces of pottery!”
10 So, kings and rulers, be smart
and learn this lesson.
11 Serve the Lord with fear and trembling.
12 Show that you are loyal to his son, [ c ]
or the Lord will be angry and destroy you.
He is almost angry enough to do that now,
but those who go to him for protection will be blessed.
2 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord , and against his anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
2 Why are ( A ) the [ a ] nations restless
And the peoples ( B ) plotting in vain?
2 The ( C ) kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers conspire together
( D ) Against the Lord and against His [ b ] ( E ) Anointed, saying ,
3 “Let’s ( F ) tear their shackles apart
And throw their ropes away from us!”
4 He who [ c ] sits in the heavens ( G ) laughs,
The Lord ( H ) scoffs at them.
5 Then He will speak to them in His ( I ) anger
And ( J ) terrify them in His fury, saying ,
6 “But as for Me, I have installed ( K ) My King
Upon Zion, ( L ) My holy mountain.”
7 “I will announce the [ d ] decree of the Lord :
He said to Me, ‘You are ( M ) My Son,
Today I have fathered You.
8 Ask it of Me, and ( N ) I will certainly give ( O ) the [ e ] nations as Your inheritance,
And the ( P ) ends of the earth as Your possession.
9 You shall [ f ] ( Q ) break them with a [ g ] rod of iron,
You shall ( R ) shatter them like [ h ] earthenware.’”
10 Now then, you kings, ( S ) use insight;
Let yourselves be instructed, you [ i ] judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with [ j ] ( T ) reverence
And rejoice with ( U ) trembling.
12 [ k ] Kiss ( V ) the Son, that He not be angry and you perish on the way,
For ( W ) His wrath may be kindled quickly.
How blessed are all who ( X ) take refuge in Him!
1 Why do the nations conspire [ a ]
and the peoples plot ( A ) in vain?
2 The kings ( B ) of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord and against his anointed, ( C ) saying,
3 “Let us break their chains ( D )
and throw off their shackles.” ( E )
4 The One enthroned ( F ) in heaven laughs; ( G )
the Lord scoffs at them.
5 He rebukes them in his anger ( H )
and terrifies them in his wrath, ( I ) saying,
6 “I have installed my king ( J )
on Zion, ( K ) my holy mountain. ( L ) ”
7 I will proclaim the Lord ’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son; ( M )
today I have become your father. ( N )
8 Ask me,
and I will make the nations ( O ) your inheritance, ( P )
the ends of the earth ( Q ) your possession.
9 You will break them with a rod of iron [ b ] ; ( R )
you will dash them to pieces ( S ) like pottery. ( T ) ”
10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; ( U )
be warned, you rulers ( V ) of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear ( W )
and celebrate his rule ( X ) with trembling. ( Y )
12 Kiss his son, ( Z ) or he will be angry
and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath ( AA ) can flare up in a moment.
Blessed ( AB ) are all who take refuge ( AC ) in him.
