This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

God teaches us about himself

19 The heavens show us how great God is.
The sky above shows his good work.
2 Each day speaks about God,
until the next day continues the story.
Every night tells us how great God is.
3 They do not use words to speak with.
Nobody hears their voice.
4 But their message goes round all the earth.
All the world can understand what they say.

God has made a home for the sun in the sky.
5 Each morning, the sun comes out,
like a happy man who has just married.
It comes out,
like a strong man who wants to run a race.
6 The sun rises at one end of the heavens.
It travels in a big circle to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat. [ a ]

7 The law of the Lord is perfect.
It makes us strong again.
We can trust what the Lord teaches us.
He helps ordinary people to be wise.
8 The Lord 's rules are always right.
If we obey them, they make us really happy.
The Lord 's commands are completely good.
They show us how to live in a good way.
9 It is right for us to respect the Lord .
That will always help us.
The laws of the Lord are true.
They are right and fair.
10 They are more valuable than gold,
even the best gold.
They are sweeter than the best honey.
11 Your laws warn us to do what is right.
If we obey them, they are a great help to us. [ b ]

12 Nobody realizes every time they do something wrong.
Please forgive me for the sins that I do not know about.
13 Lord, stop me doing things that I know are wrong.
Do not let those sins rule my life.
Then I will not be guilty.
I will not have turned against you in a bad way.

14 Lord , I want to make you happy.
I want my words and my thoughts to please you.
You are my strong Rock
and you are my Redeemer. [ c ]

To the director: A song of David.

19 The heavens tell about the glory of God.
The skies announce what his hands have made.
2 Each new day tells more of the story,
and each night reveals more and more about God’s power. [ a ]
3 You cannot hear them say anything.
They don’t make any sound we can hear.
4 But their message goes throughout the world.
Their teaching reaches the ends of the earth.

The sun’s tent is set up in the heavens.
5 It comes out like a happy bridegroom from his bedroom.
It begins its path across the sky
like an athlete eager to run a race.
6 It starts at one end of the sky
and runs all the way to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.

7 The Lord ’s teachings are perfect.
They give strength to his people.
The Lord ’s rules can be trusted.
They help even the foolish become wise.
8 The Lord ’s laws are right.
They make people happy.
The Lord ’s commands are good.
They show people the right way to live.

9 Learning respect for the Lord is good.
It will last forever.
The Lord ’s judgments are right.
They are completely fair.
10 His teachings are worth more than pure gold.
They are sweeter than the best honey dripping from the honeycomb.
11 His teachings warn his servants,
and good things come to those who obey them.

12 People cannot see their own mistakes,
so don’t let me commit secret sins.
13 Don’t let me do what I know is wrong.
Don’t let sin control me.
If you help me, I can be pure
and free from sin.
14 May my words and thoughts please you.
Lord , you are my Rock—the one who rescues me.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 19:2 Or “ Like the changing of the guards, each day passes the news to the next day and each night passes information to the next night.”

19 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.

3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,

5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.

6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord , my strength, and my redeemer.

The Works and the Word of God.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

19 The ( A ) heavens tell of the glory of God;
And their ( B ) expanse declares the work of His hands.
2 Day to ( C ) day pours forth speech,
And ( D ) night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.
4 Their [ a ] ( E ) line has gone out into all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world.
In them He has ( F ) placed a tent for the sun,
5 Which is like a groom coming out of his chamber;
It rejoices like a strong person to run his course.
6 Its ( G ) rising is from [ b ] one end of the heavens,
And its circuit to the [ c ] other end of them;
And there is nothing hidden from its heat.

7 ( H ) The Law of the Lord is [ d ] ( I ) perfect, ( J ) restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is ( K ) sure, making ( L ) wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the Lord are ( M ) right, ( N ) rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is ( O ) pure, ( P ) enlightening the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are ( Q ) true; they are ( R ) righteous altogether.
10 They are more desirable than ( S ) gold, yes, than much pure gold;
( T ) Sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, ( U ) Your servant is warned by them;
In keeping them there is great ( V ) reward.
12 Who can ( W ) discern his errors? ( X ) Acquit me of ( Y ) hidden faults .
13 Also keep Your servant back ( Z ) from presumptuous sins ;
Let them not ( AA ) rule over me;
Then I will be ( AB ) innocent,
And I will be blameless of ( AC ) great wrongdoing.
14 May the words of my mouth and ( AD ) the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
Lord , ( AE ) my rock and my ( AF ) Redeemer.
