A song to sing as we climb.

The house of God

132 Lord , remember King David
and all the troubles that he suffered.
2 He made a special promise to the Lord .
He promised you, the Mighty One of Jacob. [ a ]
3 He said, ‘I will not go into my house or get into my bed;
4 I will not sleep even for a moment,
5 until I find a house for the Lord .
Yes, the Mighty One of Jacob needs a proper home.’ [ b ]

6 Listen! We heard the news at Ephrathah. [ c ]
We found God's Covenant Box in the fields of Jaar. [ d ]
7 We will go to the Lord 's home!
We will worship him on his throne!
8 Lord , come now and stay here, in your home!
Come with the Covenant Box that shows your great power. [ e ]
9 May your priests serve you in a good way.
Cause your faithful people to shout with joy!
10 Remember your servant, King David.
Do not turn away from your chosen king. [ f ]
11 The Lord made a strong promise to David.
He will not change what he has promised to do.
The Lord said,
‘I will put one of your sons on your throne to rule as king.
12 If your sons obey my covenant and my rules,
their descendants will rule for ever.’
13 The Lord has chosen Zion to be his home.
14 He said, ‘This is where I will live for ever.
This is where I want my home to be.
15 I will give Zion's people everything that they need.
Zion's poor people will have plenty of food to eat.
16 I will keep Zion's priests safe.
The people who serve God faithfully will shout loudly,
because they are so happy.
17 In Zion I will give strength to King David's family.
My chosen king will continue to rule well,
like a light that shines brightly.
18 I will cause his enemies to be ashamed.
But his own kingdom will be great!’

Footnotes

  1. 132:2 ‘The Mighty One of Jacob’ is another name for God, who ruled over the Israelites.
  2. 132:5 David wanted God to have a proper home. He wanted to build a temple for the Lord . It was his son, Solomon, who then built the temple.
  3. 132:6 Ephrathah is another name for Bethlehem.
  4. 132:6 See 1 Chronicles 13:5-6 .
  5. 132:8 They brought the Covenant Box to Jerusalem before they built the Temple. They put it in a special tent. When the Temple was built, they put God's Covenant Box in the inside room of the temple, the Most Holy Place.
  6. 132:10 The word for ‘chosen king’ is ‘Messiah’ in the Hebrew language. Jesus was King David's great descendant who became king for ever.

A song for going up to the Temple.

132 Lord , remember how David suffered.
2 He made a promise to you, Lord ,
an oath to the Mighty God of Jacob.
3 He said, “I will not go into my house
or lie down on my bed.
4 I will not sleep
or let my eyes rest,
5 until I find a home for the Lord ,
a tent for the Mighty God of Jacob!”

6 We heard about this in Ephrathah. [ a ]
We found the Box of the Agreement at Kiriath Jearim. [ b ]
7 Now, let’s go to the Lord’s house.
Let’s worship at his throne. [ c ]
8 Lord , get up [ d ] and go to your resting place;
go with the Box that shows your power.
9 May your priests be clothed in victory
and your loyal followers be filled with joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
don’t reject your chosen king. [ e ]
11 The Lord made a promise to David, an oath of loyalty to him:
“I will always put one of your descendants on your throne.
12 If your descendants obey my agreement and the laws I teach them,
then the king will always be someone from your family.”

13 The Lord has chosen Zion to be the place for his Temple,
the place he wanted for his home.
14 He said, “This will always be my place of rest.
This is where I want to sit on my throne.
15 I will bless this city with plenty of food.
Even the poor will have enough to eat.
16 I will clothe the priests with salvation,
and my followers will be filled with joy.
17 This is where I will make David’s family strong.
I will never let the lamp of my chosen king stop burning.
18 I will cover his enemies with shame,
and on his head will be a shining crown.”

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 132:6 Ephrathah Bethlehem, the town where David was born.
  2. Psalm 132:6 Kiriath Jearim Literally, “fields of the forest.” The Hebrew word meaning “forest” is like the name of this city.
  3. Psalm 132:7 at his throne Literally, “at his footstool.” This can mean the Box of the Agreement, the Holy Tent, or the Temple. God is like a king sitting on his throne and resting his feet on the place where people worship him.
  4. Psalm 132:8 Lord , get up The people said this when they lifted the Box of the Agreement and took it into battle with them. This showed that God was with them. See Num. 10:35-36.
  5. Psalm 132:10 chosen king Literally, “anointed one.”

132 Lord, remember David, and all his afflictions:

2 How he sware unto the Lord , and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;

3 Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;

4 I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,

5 Until I find out a place for the Lord , an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

6 Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.

7 We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.

8 Arise, O Lord , into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.

9 Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy.

10 For thy servant David's sake turn not away the face of thine anointed.

11 The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

12 If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore.

13 For the Lord hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation.

14 This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

15 I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.

16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

17 There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.

18 His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

Prayer for the Lord s Blessing upon the Sanctuary.

A Song of Ascents.
