A song to sing as we climb.

The Lord has done great things for us! [ a ]

126 When the Lord turned us round,
so that we enjoyed a good life in Zion again,
we thought that we were dreaming!
2 At that time, we laughed a lot.
We shouted because we were so happy!
People in other countries said to each other,
‘The Lord has done great things for them!’
3 Yes, the Lord has done great things for us.
So we are very happy.
4 Lord , please bless us like before.
That will be like streams of water that return to the desert. [ b ]
5 When people went out to plant their seeds,
they were crying.
But they will be happy when they bring in the harvest!
6 People were weeping when they took their bags of seeds to plant. [ c ]
But when they carry their crops back home,
they will shout because they are so happy! [ d ]

Footnotes

  1. 126:1 Psalm 126 remembers how God helps his people when they have troubles. Even when things seem very bad for us, God can change everything. This psalm may remember the time when God took his people back to Jerusalem (Zion) after they had lived in Babylon for a long time.
  2. 126:4 There is no rain in the desert for a long time. The rivers and the streams become dry. But when rain falls, everything changes.
  3. 126:6 The people had not been able to plant seeds in their fields for a long time. So now it was hard work for them. They had to take their valuable seeds and plant them. So they had less food to eat. That is why they were sad.
  4. 126:6 When the time for harvest came, there would be much food and they would be very happy! It is very difficult when we have troubles. But God can change everything.

A song for going up to the Temple.

126 It will be like a dream
when the Lord comes back with the captives of Zion. [ a ]
2 We will laugh and sing happy songs!
Then the other nations will say,
“The Lord did a great thing for Zion!”
3 Yes, we will be happy
because the Lord did a great thing for us.

4 So, Lord , bring back the good times,
like a desert stream filled again with flowing water.
5 Then those who were sad when they planted
will be happy when they gather the harvest!
6 Those who cried as they carried the seeds [ b ]
will be happy when they bring in the crops!

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 126:1 when … Zion Or “when the Lord restores Zion.” See “ Zion ” in the Word List.
  2. Psalm 126:6 carried the seeds Or “carried all their possessions.”

126 When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.

3 The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

4 Turn again our captivity, O Lord , as the streams in the south.

5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

Thanksgiving for Return from Captivity.

A Song of Ascents.

126 When the Lord ( A ) brought back [ a ] the captives of Zion,

We are ( F ) joyful.

4 Restore our fortunes, Lord ,
As the [ b ] ( G ) streams in the [ c ] South.
5 Those who sow in ( H ) tears shall harvest with ( I ) joyful shouting.
6 One who goes here and there weeping, carrying his bag of seed,
Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him .
