A song to sing as we climb.

David wrote this song. [ a ]

124 If the Lord was not fighting for us,
what would have happened?
Israel's people, now answer:
2 ‘If the Lord was not fighting for us when men attacked us,
3 our enemies would have eaten us alive! [ b ]
They would have destroyed us,
because they were so angry against us.
4 They would have been too strong for us,
like rivers of waters that covered us,
5 They would have been like deep water over our heads
that drowned us. [ c ]

6 We should praise the Lord !
He did not let our enemies destroy us,
like wild animals that kill their food and eat it.
7 Now we have become free,
like a bird that got free out of a trap.
Our enemies lost their power, and we are free! [ d ]
8 The one who helped us is the Lord .
He made the whole universe.’

Footnotes

  1. 124:0 David may have written this psalm when he was fighting the Philistines. David thought that the Philistines would win, but they did not. God gave David and his people help. The psalm says that if God had not helped his people, the enemy would have destroyed them.
  2. 124:3 ‘Eaten us alive’ is like a picture that means ‘destroyed us’.
  3. 124:5 The rivers and deep water are pictures of the power of the enemy.
  4. 124:7 A trap is something to catch an animal or bird in. David felt that Israel was in a trap. But God made them free!

A song of David for going up to the Temple.

124 What would have happened to us if the Lord had not been on our side?
Tell us about it, Israel.
2 What would have happened to us if the Lord had not been on our side
when people attacked us?
3 They would have swallowed us alive
when they became angry with us.
4 Their armies would have been
like a flood washing over us,
like a river drowning us.
5 Those proud people would have been
like water rising up to our mouth and drowning us.

6 Praise the Lord !
He did not let our enemies tear us apart.

7 We escaped like a bird from the net of a hunter.
The net broke, and we escaped!
8 Our help came from the Lord ,
the one who made heaven and earth!

124 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say;

2 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

6 Blessed be the Lord , who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

8 Our help is in the name of the Lord , who made heaven and earth.

Praise for Rescue from Enemies.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

124 ( A ) Had it not been the Lord who was on our side,”
( B ) Let Israel say,
2 “Had it not been the Lord who was on our side
When people rose up against us,
3 Then they would have ( C ) swallowed us alive,
When their ( D ) anger was kindled against us;
4 Then the ( E ) waters would have flooded over us,
The stream would have [ a ] swept over our souls;
5 Then the ( F ) raging waters would have [ b ] swept over our souls.”

6 Blessed be the Lord ,
Who has not given us [ c ] to be ( G ) torn by their teeth.
7 Our souls have ( H ) escaped ( I ) like a bird from the trapper’s ( J ) snare;
The snare is broken and we have escaped.
8 Our ( K ) help is in the name of the Lord ,
Who ( L ) made heaven and earth.

would have swept us away.

who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
