This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

A prayer for help

12 Lord , please help me!
All the good people have gone away!
No kind or faithful people remain.
2 Everybody tells lies to one another.
When they say nice things,
they do it to deceive their friends.
3 Lord , please shut their mouths!
When they deceive people or they boast,
stop them doing that!
4 They say:
‘Nobody can tell us what to do!
We will say what we like to get what we want!’
5 But the Lord says:
‘Now I will do something!
I know the cruel things that wicked people do to poor people.
When weak people cry with pain, I hear them.
So I will make them safe,
as they want me to do for them.’
6 The Lord 's promises are true.
We can trust them,
because they are pure.
They are as pure as silver
that people have put in a hot fire seven times. [ a ]
7 Yes Lord , you will take care of the poor people.
You will always keep each one of them safe
from all those evil people.
8 But if people praise evil things,
then wicked people will boast more and more.

Footnotes

  1. 12:6 People dig silver from the ground. They use a hot fire to make it clean and pure. It is then very beautiful and of great value. David is saying that God's words are also like this. We can trust that he will do what he says.

To the director: With the sheminith. A song of David.

12 Save me, Lord !
We can no longer trust anyone!
All the good, loyal people are gone.
2 People lie to their neighbors.
They say whatever they think people want to hear.
3 The Lord should cut off their lying lips
and cut out their bragging tongues.
4 Those people think they can win any argument.
They say, “We are so good with words,
no one will be our master.”

5 They took advantage of the poor
and stole what little they had.
But the Lord knows what they did, and he says,
“I will rescue those who are poor and helpless,
and I will punish those who hurt them.” [ a ]

6 The Lord ’s words are true and pure,
like silver purified by fire,
like silver melted seven times to make it perfectly pure.

7 Lord , take care of the helpless.
Protect them forever from the wicked people in this world.
8 The wicked are all around us,
and everyone thinks evil is something to be praised!

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 12:5 I will rescue … hurt them Or “I will rescue poor, helpless people who were hurt and asked me for help.”

12 Help, Lord ; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

3 The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:

4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord ; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.

6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

7 Thou shalt keep them, O Lord , thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

God, a Helper against the Treacherous.

For the music director; [ a ] upon an eight-stringed lyre. A Psalm of David.

12 Help, Lord , for ( A ) the godly person has come to an end,
For the faithful have disappeared from the sons of mankind.
2 They ( B ) speak [ b ] lies to one another;
They speak with [ c ] ( C ) flattering lips and a double heart.
3 May the Lord cut off all [ d ] flattering lips,
The tongue that ( D ) speaks great things;
4 Who ( E ) have said, “With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are [ e ] our own; who is lord over us?”
5 “Because of the ( F ) devastation of the poor, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now ( G ) I will arise,” says the Lord ; “I will ( H ) put him in the safety for which he longs.”

6 The ( I ) words of the Lord are pure words;
Like silver ( J ) refined in a furnace on the ground, filtered seven times.
7 You, Lord , will keep them;
You will ( K ) protect him from this generation forever.
8 The ( L ) wicked strut about on every side
When [ f ] ( M ) vileness is exalted among the sons of mankind.
