- Psalm Chapter 109
109 You are the God that I praise.
Let me hear you speak!
2 Wicked people are saying bad things against me.
They are telling lies about me.
3 They are all round me,
and they say cruel things.
I have done nothing against them,
but they still attack me.
4 I have loved them,
but they still accuse me.
I will continue to pray for them. [ b ]
5 I have been kind to them,
but they do bad things to me in return.
I have loved them,
but they hate me in return.
6 Find an evil man to judge my enemy!
Put somebody at his right side to accuse him!
7 When they judge him,
show that he is guilty.
Show that even his prayers are a sin.
8 Make his life very short!
Let somebody else do the job which he did.
9 May he soon die,
so that his children have no father,
and his wife has no husband.
10 Cause his children to have no home,
so that they go from place to place,
and ask people to give them food.
11 May the people who lent money to my enemy,
take away everything that belonged to him.
Let strangers take everything
that he worked hard to get for himself.
12 Do not let anyone be kind to him.
Do not let anyone help his children,
even when they have no father.
13 Remove all the descendants in his family.
When his children die,
may nobody remember his family any more!
14 Lord , please remember his ancestors sins.
Please do not forgive his mother's sins.
15 Lord , never forget his family's sins.
May nobody on earth remember his family's name.
16 My enemy was never kind to anyone.
He was cruel to poor, weak, and helpless people.
He even caused them to die,
17 He loved to curse people.
Now may those curses happen to him!
He never asked God to bless other people,
so nobody will ask God to bless him!
18 He always cursed others,
as he always put on clothes.
So those curses have become like his food and drink.
May they go deep inside him,
like olive oil that goes into his bones.
19 Then curses will truly be his clothes.
They will be like the belt that he wears every day.
20 Yes, Lord , please punish all my enemies like that,
because they say evil things to accuse me!
21 You, Almighty Lord , must help me!
Show that your name is great.
Rescue me,
because your faithful love is good.
22 I am weak and helpless.
My heart beats fast inside me.
23 I will soon be gone,
like a shadow that disappears in the evening.
I am like an insect
that the wind blows away.
24 I am so hungry that my knees shake.
I am so thin that my bones show.
25 My enemies laugh at me!
When they see me,
they shake their heads at me.
26 Lord my God, please help me!
Please rescue me,
because of your faithful love.
27 Lord , cause my enemies to know
that you are the one who has rescued me.
28 They may curse me,
but you will bless me.
When they attack me,
they will become ashamed.
But I will be very happy,
as your servant.
29 Shame will come on my enemies.
It will cover them like a coat.
30 I will thank the Lord with a loud voice!
I will praise him,
in front of a big crowd of people.
31 He stands beside poor people,
and he is ready to help them.
When cruel people accuse a weak person,
the Lord saves that person's life.
So I will praise the Lord .
109 God, I praise you!
Hear my prayer and do something!
2 Wicked people are telling lies about me.
They are saying things that are not true.
3 They are saying hateful things about me.
They are attacking me for no reason.
4 I loved them, but they were against me.
So I said a prayer.
5 I did good things to them,
but they are doing bad things to me.
I loved them,
but they hated me.
6 They said, “Choose someone evil to represent him.
Let the one at his side really be his accuser.
7 Let even his prayer be used as evidence against him,
and let the court find him guilty.
8 Let his life be cut short,
and let someone else take over his work.
9 Let his children become orphans and his wife a widow.
10 Make his children wander around as beggars,
forced from homes that lie in ruins.
11 Let the people he owes take everything he owns.
Let strangers get everything he worked for.
12 Let no one be kind to him.
Let no one show mercy to his children.
13 May his family come to an end.
May his name be unknown to future generations.
14 May the Lord remember the sins of his father,
and may his mother’s sins never be erased.
15 May the Lord remember their sins forever,
and may he cause people to forget his family completely.
16 He never did anything good.
He never loved anyone.
He made life hard for the poor and the helpless.
17 He loved to curse others,
so let those bad things happen to him.
He never blessed others,
so don’t let good things happen to him.
18 Cursing was a daily part of his life,
like the clothes he wears.
Cursing others became a part of him,
like the water he drinks and the oil he puts on his body.
19 So let curses cover him like the robe he wears
and always surround him like a belt.”
20 My enemies said these evil things against me.
But may those curses be the way the Lord punishes them.
21 My Lord God , treat me in a way that brings honor to your name.
Save me because of your faithful love.
22 I am only a poor, helpless man.
I am so sad; my heart is broken.
23 I feel my life is over, fading like a shadow at day’s end.
I feel like a bug that someone brushed away.
24 My knees are weak from fasting.
I have lost weight and become thin.
25 My enemies insult me.
They look at me and shake their heads.
26 Lord my God, help me!
Show your faithful love and save me!
27 Then they will know that you did it.
They will know that it was your power, Lord , that helped me.
28 They curse me, but you can bless me.
They attacked me, so defeat them.
Then I, your servant, will be happy.
29 Humiliate my enemies!
Let them wear their shame like a coat.
30 I give thanks to the Lord .
I praise him in front of everyone.
31 He stands by the helpless
and saves them from those who try to put them to death.
109 Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;
2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.
4 For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.
5 And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
6 Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand.
7 When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin.
8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
9 Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
10 Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.
12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.
13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the Lord ; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
15 Let them be before the Lord continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.
16 Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.
17 As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.
18 As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.
19 Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.
20 Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the Lord , and of them that speak evil against my soul.
21 But do thou for me, O God the Lord, for thy name's sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me.
22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
23 I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust.
24 My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness.
25 I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads.
26 Help me, O Lord my God: O save me according to thy mercy:
27 That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, Lord , hast done it.
28 Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice.
29 Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle.
30 I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude.
31 For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.
109 ( A ) God of my praise,
( B ) Do not be silent!
2 For they have opened a [ a ] wicked and ( C ) deceitful mouth against me;
They have spoken [ b ] against me with a ( D ) lying tongue.
3 They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And have fought against me ( E ) without cause.
4 In return ( F ) for my love they act as my accusers;
But ( G ) I am in prayer.
5 So they have [ c ] ( H ) repaid me evil for good,
And ( I ) hatred for my love.
6 Appoint a wicked person over him,
And may an [ d ] ( J ) accuser stand at his right hand.
7 When he is judged, may he ( K ) come out guilty,
And may his ( L ) prayer become sin.
8 May ( M ) his days be few;
May ( N ) another take his office.
9 May his ( O ) children be fatherless,
And his ( P ) wife a widow.
10 May his ( Q ) children wander about and beg;
And may they ( R ) seek sustenance [ e ] far from their ruined homes.
11 May ( S ) the creditor [ f ] seize everything that he has,
And may ( T ) strangers plunder the product of his labor.
12 May there be none to [ g ] ( U ) extend kindness to him,
Nor ( V ) any to be gracious to his fatherless children.
13 May his ( W ) descendants be [ h ] eliminated;
May their ( X ) name be wiped out in a following generation.
14 May ( Y ) the guilt of his fathers be remembered [ i ] before the Lord ,
And do not let the sin of his mother be ( Z ) wiped out.
15 May ( AA ) they be before the Lord continually,
So that He may ( AB ) eliminate their memory from the earth;
16 Because he did not remember to show mercy,
But persecuted the ( AC ) afflicted and needy person,
And the ( AD ) despondent in heart, to ( AE ) put them to death.
17 He also loved cursing, so ( AF ) it came to him;
And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.
18 But he ( AG ) clothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
And it ( AH ) entered [ j ] his body like water,
And like oil into his bones.
19 May it be to him as ( AI ) a garment with which he covers himself,
And as a belt which he constantly ( AJ ) wears around himself.
20 May this be the ( AK ) reward of my accusers from the Lord ,
And of those who ( AL ) speak evil against my soul.
21 But You, [ k ] God , the Lord, deal kindly with me ( AM ) for the sake of Your name;
Because ( AN ) Your mercy is good, rescue me;
22 For ( AO ) I am afflicted and needy,
And [ l ] my heart is ( AP ) wounded within me.
23 I am passing ( AQ ) like a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off ( AR ) like the locust.
24 My ( AS ) knees [ m ] are weak from ( AT ) fasting,
And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.
25 I also have become a ( AU ) disgrace to them;
When they see me, they ( AV ) shake their head.
26 ( AW ) Help me, Lord my God;
Save me according to Your mercy.
27 [ n ] And may they ( AX ) know that this is Your hand;
You, Lord , have done it.
28 ( AY ) They will curse, but You bless;
When they arise, they will be ashamed,
But Your ( AZ ) servant will be glad.
29 [ o ] May ( BA ) my accusers be clothed with dishonor,
And [ p ] may they ( BB ) cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.
30 With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the Lord ;
And ( BC ) I will praise Him in the midst of many.
31 For He stands ( BD ) at the right hand of the needy,
To save him from those who ( BE ) judge his soul.
1 My God, whom I praise, ( A )
do not remain silent, ( B )
2 for people who are wicked and deceitful ( C )
have opened their mouths against me;
they have spoken against me with lying tongues. ( D )
3 With words of hatred ( E ) they surround me;
they attack me without cause. ( F )
4 In return for my friendship they accuse me,
but I am a man of prayer. ( G )
5 They repay me evil for good, ( H )
and hatred for my friendship.
6 Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;
let an accuser ( I ) stand at his right hand.
7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty, ( J )
and may his prayers condemn ( K ) him.
8 May his days be few; ( L )
may another take his place ( M ) of leadership.
9 May his children be fatherless
and his wife a widow. ( N )
10 May his children be wandering beggars; ( O )
may they be driven [ a ] from their ruined homes.
11 May a creditor ( P ) seize all he has;
may strangers plunder ( Q ) the fruits of his labor. ( R )
12 May no one extend kindness to him
or take pity ( S ) on his fatherless children.
13 May his descendants be cut off, ( T )
their names blotted out ( U ) from the next generation.
14 May the iniquity of his fathers ( V ) be remembered before the Lord ;
may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
15 May their sins always remain before ( W ) the Lord ,
that he may blot out their name ( X ) from the earth.
16 For he never thought of doing a kindness,
but hounded to death the poor
and the needy ( Y ) and the brokenhearted. ( Z )
17 He loved to pronounce a curse—
may it come back on him. ( AA )
He found no pleasure in blessing—
may it be far from him.
18 He wore cursing ( AB ) as his garment;
it entered into his body like water, ( AC )
into his bones like oil.
19 May it be like a cloak wrapped ( AD ) about him,
like a belt tied forever around him.
20 May this be the Lord ’s payment ( AE ) to my accusers,
to those who speak evil ( AF ) of me.
21 But you, Sovereign Lord ,
help me for your name’s sake; ( AG )
out of the goodness of your love, ( AH ) deliver me. ( AI )
22 For I am poor and needy,
and my heart is wounded within me.
23 I fade away like an evening shadow; ( AJ )
I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees give ( AK ) way from fasting; ( AL )
my body is thin and gaunt. ( AM )
25 I am an object of scorn ( AN ) to my accusers;
when they see me, they shake their heads. ( AO )
26 Help me, ( AP ) Lord my God;
save me according to your unfailing love.
27 Let them know ( AQ ) that it is your hand,
that you, Lord , have done it.
28 While they curse, ( AR ) may you bless;
may those who attack me be put to shame,
but may your servant rejoice. ( AS )
29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace
and wrapped in shame ( AT ) as in a cloak.
