10 Why standest thou afar off, O Lord ? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?

² The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.

³ For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth.

⁴ The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

⁵ His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them.

⁶ He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

⁸ He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor.

⁹ He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.

¹⁰ He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.

¹¹ He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.

¹² Arise, O Lord ; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble.

¹³ Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it.

¹⁴ Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.

¹⁵ Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none.

¹⁶ The Lord is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land.

¹⁷ Lord , thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

¹⁸ To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

10 Lord , why do you stay so far away?
Why do you hide from people in times of trouble?
² The wicked are proud and make evil plans to hurt the poor,
who are caught in their traps and made to suffer.
³ Those greedy people brag about the things they want to get.
They curse the Lord and show that they hate him.
⁴ The wicked are too proud to ask God for help.
He does not fit into their plans.
⁵ They succeed in everything they do.
They don’t understand how you can judge them.
They make fun of all their enemies.
⁶ They say to themselves, “Nothing bad will ever happen to us.
We will have our fun and never be punished.”
⁷ They are always cursing, lying,
and planning evil things to do.
⁸ They hide just outside the villages,
waiting to kill innocent people,
always looking for any helpless person they can hurt.
⁹ They are like lions hiding in the bushes
to catch weak and helpless animals.
They lay their traps for the poor,
who are caught in their nets.
¹⁰ Again and again they hurt people
who are already weak and suffering.
¹¹ They say to themselves, “God has forgotten about us.
He is not watching.
He will never see what we are doing.”

¹² Lord , get up and do something.
Punish those who are wicked, God.
Don’t forget those who are poor and helpless.

¹³ The wicked turn against God
because they think he will not punish them.
¹⁴ But, Lord, you do see the pain and suffering they cause.
You see it, so punish them.
Those who were left helpless put their trust in you.
After all, you are the one who cares for orphans.

¹⁵ Break the arms of those who are wicked and evil.
Punish them for the evil they have done,
and stop them from doing any more.
¹⁶ Lord , you are King forever and ever,
so I know you will remove the wicked nations from your land.
¹⁷ Lord , you have heard what the poor want.
Listen to their prayers, and do what they ask.
¹⁸ Protect the orphans and those who have been hurt.
Don’t let powerful people drive us from our land!

A prayer for the overthrow of the wicked.

Why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?
² In the pride of the wicked ^{[ a ]} the poor ^{[ b ]} is hotly pursued;
^{[ c ]} Let them be taken in the devices that they have conceived.
³ For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire,
And ^{[ d ]} the covetous renounceth, yea , ^{[ e ]} contemneth Jehovah.
⁴ The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, saith , He will not require it .
All his thoughts are, There is no God.
⁵ His ways are ^{[ f ]} firm at all times;
Thy judgments are far above out of his sight:
As for all his adversaries, he puffeth at them.
⁶ He saith in his heart, I shall not be moved;
To all generations I shall not be in adversity.
⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and ^{[ g ]} oppression:
Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.
⁸ He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages;
In the secret places doth he murder the innocent;
His eyes are privily set against the ^{[ h ]} helpless.
⁹ He lurketh in secret as a lion in his covert;
He lieth in wait to catch the poor:
He doth catch the poor, when he draweth him in his net.
¹⁰ ^{[ i ]} He croucheth, he boweth down,
And the ^{[ j ]} helpless fall by his strong ones.
¹¹ He saith in his heart: God hath forgotten;
He hideth his face, he will never see it.
¹² Arise, O Jehovah; O God, lift up thy hand:
Forget not the ^{[ k ]} poor.
¹³ Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God,
And say in his heart, Thou wilt not require it ?
¹⁴ Thou hast seen it ; for thou beholdest ^{[ l ]} mischief and spite, ^{[ m ]} to requite it with thy hand:
The ^{[ n ]} helpless committeth himself unto thee;
Thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.
¹⁵ Break thou the arm of the wicked;
And as for the evil man, seek out his wickedness till thou find none.
¹⁶ Jehovah is King for ever and ever:
The ^{[ o ]} nations are perished out of his land.
¹⁷ Jehovah, thou hast heard the desire of the meek:
Thou wilt ^{[ p ]} prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear;
¹⁸ To judge the fatherless and the oppressed,
That man who is of the earth may be terrible no more.

10 Why do you stand far off, Yahweh?
Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
² In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak.
They are caught in the schemes that they devise.
³ For the wicked boasts of his heart’s cravings.
He blesses the greedy and condemns Yahweh.
⁴ The wicked, in the pride of his face,
has no room in his thoughts for God.
⁵ His ways are prosperous at all times.
He is arrogant, and your laws are far from his sight.
As for all his adversaries, he sneers at them.
⁶ He says in his heart, “I shall not be shaken.
For generations I shall have no trouble.”
⁷ His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and oppression.
Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.
⁸ He lies in wait near the villages.
From ambushes, he murders the innocent.
His eyes are secretly set against the helpless.
⁹ He lurks in secret as a lion in his ambush.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless.
He catches the helpless when he draws him in his net.
¹⁰ The helpless are crushed.
They collapse.
They fall under his strength.
¹¹ He says in his heart, “God has forgotten.
He hides his face.
He will never see it.”

¹² Arise, Yahweh!
God, lift up your hand!
Don’t forget the helpless.
¹³ Why does the wicked person condemn God,
and say in his heart, “God won’t call me into account?”
¹⁴ But you do see trouble and grief.
You consider it to take it into your hand.
You help the victim and the fatherless.
¹⁵ Break the arm of the wicked.
As for the evil man, seek out his wickedness until you find none.
¹⁶ Yahweh is King forever and ever!
The nations will perish out of his land.
¹⁷ Yahweh, you have heard the desire of the humble.
You will prepare their heart.
You will cause your ear to hear,
¹⁸ to judge the fatherless and the oppressed,
that man who is of the earth may terrify no more.

10 Why, Jehovah, dost Thou stand at a distance? Thou dost hide in times of adversity,

² Through the pride of the wicked, Is the poor inflamed, They are caught in devices that they devised.

³ Because the wicked hath boasted Of the desire of his soul, And a dishonest gainer he hath blessed, He hath despised Jehovah.

⁴ The wicked according to the height of his face, inquireth not. `God is not!' [are] all his devices.

⁵ Pain do his ways at all times, On high [are] Thy judgments before him, All his adversaries -- he puffeth at them.

⁶ He hath said in his heart, `I am not moved,' To generation and generation not in evil.

⁷ Of oaths his mouth is full, And deceits, and fraud: Under his tongue [is] perverseness and iniquity,

⁸ He doth sit in an ambush of the villages, In secret places he doth slay the innocent. His eyes for the afflicted watch secretly,

⁹ He lieth in wait in a secret place, as a lion in a covert. He lieth in wait to catch the poor, He catcheth the poor, drawing him into his net.

¹⁰ He is bruised -- he boweth down, Fallen by his mighty ones hath the afflicted.

¹¹ He said in his heart, `God hath forgotten, He hath hid His face, He hath never seen.'

¹² Arise, O Jehovah! O God, lift up Thy hand! Forget not the humble.

¹³ Wherefore hath the wicked despised God? He hath said in his heart, `It is not required.'

¹⁴ Thou hast seen, For Thou perverseness and anger beholdest; By giving into Thy hand, On Thee doth the afflicted leave [it], Of the fatherless Thou hast been an helper.

¹⁵ Break the arm of the wicked and the evil, Seek out his wickedness, find none;

¹⁶ Jehovah [is] king to the age, and for ever, The nations have perished out of His land!

¹⁷ The desire of the humble Thou hast heard, O Jehovah. Thou preparest their heart; Thou causest Thine ear to attend,

¹⁸ To judge the fatherless and bruised: He addeth no more to oppress -- man of the earth!
