A prayer for help [ a ]

10 M ust you stand so far away, Lord ?
Why do you hide when there is trouble?
2 Wicked people are cruel to poor people.
They use their evil ideas
to take hold of weak people.
3 N ot only do wicked people boast
because they get the things that they want.
They also praise robbers,
and they curse the Lord .
4 Wicked people are too proud to worry about God.
They think, ‘God will not give me any trouble.’
5 O ften the wicked person seems to have success.
He does not respect your commands, God.
He laughs at all his enemies.
6 He says to himself, ‘There will be no trouble for me.
Nothing bad will ever happen to me or to my children.’
7 P lenty of lies come from his mouth,
and he curses people.
The bad words that he speaks are very cruel,
and they hurt people.
8 He hides near the villages,
so that he can jump out and catch people.
He watches in secret to find a weak person that he can kill.
He murders people who have done nothing wrong.
9 Q uietly, he hides like a lion among some bushes.
He waits there to catch a poor, weak person.
Like a hunter, he catches poor people in his net.
10 He stamps on the people that he catches,
and he knocks them down to the ground.
The weak person falls down,
because the wicked person is too strong.
11 The wicked person says to himself,
‘God will give me no trouble!
He does not even see what I do.’
12 R ise up, Lord !
Do something, God,
and knock down the wicked person!
Do not forget to help weak people.
13 Why do wicked people insult God?
They say to themselves,
‘God will not give me any trouble.’
14 S urely, God, you see what is happening.
You see how wicked people bring pain and trouble.
You decide what to do about it.
The weak person trusts that you will help him.
You take care of children who have no father.
15 T ake hold of the arm of the wicked, evil man!
Break it and take away his strength!
Punish him for the bad things that he has done,
so that he has to stop.
16 The Lord will rule as king for ever!
The nations who do not serve him
will not remain in his land.
17 Y ou, Lord , hear the prayers
of people who are suffering.
When they ask you to help them,
you make them feel strong.
18 You stand beside those who have no father,
and those who are poor and weak.
As a result, they will no longer be afraid.
No human on the earth can frighten them.

Footnotes

  1. 10:1 Psalm 10 continues on from Psalm 9. It continues with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, but not all the letters are there.

10 Lord , why do you stay so far away?
Why do you hide from people in times of trouble?
2 The wicked are proud and make evil plans to hurt the poor,
who are caught in their traps and made to suffer.
3 Those greedy people brag about the things they want to get.
They curse the Lord and show that they hate him.
4 The wicked are too proud to ask God for help.
He does not fit into their plans.
5 They succeed in everything they do.
They don’t understand how you can judge them.
They make fun of all their enemies.
6 They say to themselves, “Nothing bad will ever happen to us.
We will have our fun and never be punished.”
7 They are always cursing, lying,
and planning evil things to do.
8 They hide just outside the villages,
waiting to kill innocent people,
always looking for any helpless person they can hurt.
9 They are like lions hiding in the bushes
to catch weak and helpless animals.
They lay their traps for the poor,
who are caught in their nets.
10 Again and again they hurt people
who are already weak and suffering.
11 They say to themselves, “God has forgotten about us.
He is not watching.
He will never see what we are doing.”

12 Lord , get up and do something.
Punish those who are wicked, God.
Don’t forget those who are poor and helpless.

13 The wicked turn against God
because they think he will not punish them.
14 But, Lord, you do see the pain and suffering they cause.
You see it, so punish them.
Those who were left helpless put their trust in you.
After all, you are the one who cares for orphans.

15 Break the arms of those who are wicked and evil.
Punish them for the evil they have done,
and stop them from doing any more.
16 Lord , you are King forever and ever,
so I know you will remove the wicked nations from your land.
17 Lord , you have heard what the poor want.
Listen to their prayers, and do what they ask.
18 Protect the orphans and those who have been hurt.
Don’t let powerful people drive us from our land!

10 Why standest thou afar off, O Lord ? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?

2 The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.

3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth.

4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

5 His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them.

6 He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity.

7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

8 He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor.

9 He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.

10 He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.

11 He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.

12 Arise, O Lord ; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble.

13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it.

14 Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.

15 Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none.

16 The Lord is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land.

17 Lord , thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

18 To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

A Prayer for the Overthrow of the Wicked.

10 Why ( A ) do You stand far away, Lord ?
Why ( B ) do You hide [ a ] Yourself in times of trouble?
2 In ( C ) arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the needy;
[ b ] Let them be ( D ) caught in the plots which they have devised.

3 For the wicked ( E ) boasts of his ( F ) soul’s desire,
And [ c ] the greedy person curses and ( G ) shows disrespect to the Lord .
4 The wicked, [ d ] in his haughtiness, ( H ) does not seek Him .
( I ) There is no God in all his schemes.

5 His ways ( J ) succeed at all times;
Yet Your judgments are on high, ( K ) out of his sight;
As for all his enemies, he snorts at them.
6 He says to himself, “ ( L ) I will not be moved;
[ e ] Throughout the generations ( M ) I will not be in adversity.”
7 His ( N ) mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and ( O ) oppression;
( P ) Under his tongue is harm and injustice.
8 He sits in the ( Q ) lurking places of the villages;
He ( R ) kills the innocent in the secret places;
His eyes [ f ] surreptitiously watch for the [ g ] ( S ) unfortunate.
9 He lurks in secret like ( T ) a lion in his [ h ] lair;
He ( U ) lurks to catch ( V ) the needy;
He catches the needy when he pulls him into his ( W ) net.
10 Then he crushes the needy one, who cowers;
And [ i ] unfortunate people fall by his mighty power .
11 He ( X ) says to himself, “God has forgotten;
He has hidden His face; He will never see it.”

12 Arise, Lord ; God, ( Y ) lift up Your hand.
( Z ) Do not forget the humble.
13 Why has the wicked ( AA ) treated God disrespectfully?
He has said to himself, “ [ j ] You will not require an account .”
14 You have seen it , for You have looked at ( AB ) harm and provocation to [ k ] take it into Your hand.
The [ l ] ( AC ) unfortunate commits himself to You;
You have been the ( AD ) helper of the orphan.
15 ( AE ) Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer,
[ m ] ( AF ) Seek out his wickedness until You find none.

16 The Lord is ( AG ) King forever and ever;
( AH ) Nations have perished from His land.
17 Lord , You have heard the ( AI ) desire of the humble;
You will ( AJ ) strengthen their heart, ( AK ) You will make Your ear attentive
18 To [ n ] vindicate the ( AL ) orphan and the ( AM ) oppressed,
So that mankind, which is of the earth, will no longer cause ( AN ) terror.

The victims commit themselves to you; ( X )
you are the helper ( Y ) of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked man; ( Z )
call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
that would not otherwise be found out.

16 The Lord is King for ever and ever; ( AA )
the nations ( AB ) will perish from his land.
17 You, Lord , hear the desire of the afflicted; ( AC )
you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, ( AD )
18 defending the fatherless ( AE ) and the oppressed, ( AF )
so that mere earthly mortals
will never again strike terror.

  1. Psalm 10:1 Psalms 9 and 10 may originally have been a single acrostic poem in which alternating lines began with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet. In the Septuagint they constitute one psalm.
