9 The Lord spoke to Moses in the Sinai desert. The Israelites had left Egypt. It was the second year after the Israelites had left that country. It was the first month during that year. The Lord said, 2 ‘The Israelites must eat the Passover meal at the proper time. They must eat it as the rules about it say. 3 The proper time is during the evening of the 14th day of this month. It is when it starts to become dark. That is when you must eat it. You must obey all its rules and its laws.’
4 So Moses told the Israelites that they should eat the Passover. 5 So they ate the Passover in the first month, on the 14th day when it started to become dark. That was in the Sinai desert. The Israelites did everything that the Lord had said to Moses about it.
6 But there were some people who were not clean. That was because they had touched a dead body. So they could not eat the Passover on that day. So they came to Moses and Aaron on that day. 7 And those people said to Moses, ‘We are not clean because of the dead body that we touched. But we would like to bring our gift to the Lord at the proper time with the other Israelites.’
8 So Moses said to them, ‘Wait here. Then I will ask the Lord about this.’
9 Then the Lord said to Moses, 10 ‘Say to the Israelites, “Anyone among you or your descendants may become not clean because of a dead body. Or they may be away because they are travelling. They can still eat the Passover meal to thank the Lord . 11 They must eat it during the evening of the 14th day of the second month. They must eat it when it starts to become dark. They must eat it with bread and with bitter herbs. The bread must not have yeast in it. 12 They must not keep any of the food until the next morning. And they must not break any of the bones of the lamb. And they must obey all the rules about the Passover. 13 But perhaps a clean person who is at home chooses not to eat the Passover meal. You must make that person separate from his people. That is because he did not offer the proper sacrifices to the Lord at the proper time. So that person must receive the punishment for his sin.
14 People from foreign countries may also eat the Lord 's Passover meal, if they are living among you. But they must obey all the rules about the Passover festival. The rules are the same for a foreign person and for an Israelite.” ’
15 On the day that Moses put up the Tent of Meeting, a cloud covered it. In the evening it became something like a fire over the Tent, until morning. 16 It was like that all the time. The cloud covered it during the day. But at night, the cloud seemed to have fire in it. 17 When the cloud went up from God's Tent, the Israelites started to travel. And when the cloud came down, the Israelites made their camp in that place. 18 The Lord decided when the Israelites should start to travel. And the Lord decided where they should stop and make their camp. During all the time that the cloud was over the tabernacle, they stayed in their camp. 19 Even when the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for many days, the Israelites obeyed the Lord . They did not start to travel. 20 Sometimes the cloud stayed over God's Tent for a few days. Then they remained in their camp. When the Lord showed them that they should travel, they started to travel. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed there from evening until morning. But, when the cloud went up in the morning, they started to travel. But sometimes it stayed for one day and one night. Then when the cloud went up, they started to travel again. 22 Sometimes the cloud continued to be over God's Tent for two days or for a month or for a year. It stayed above it. Then, the Israelites stayed in their camp. They did not start to travel. But when it went up, they did start to travel. 23 The Lord decided when they should make their camp. And the Lord decided when they should start to travel. So they obeyed the Lord about everything that the Lord said to Moses.
9 The Lord spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai. This was during the first month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to celebrate Passover at the chosen time. 3 They must eat the Passover meal just before dark on the 14th day of this month. They must do this at the chosen time, and they must follow all the rules about Passover.”
4 So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate Passover. 5 The people did this in the desert of Sinai just before dark on the 14th day of the first month. The Israelites did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.
6 But some of the people could not celebrate Passover that day. They were unclean because they had touched a dead body. So they went to Moses and Aaron that day 7 and said to Moses, “We touched a dead body and became unclean. But why must we be kept from offering our gifts to the Lord at the chosen time with the rest of the Israelites?”
8 Moses said to them, “I will ask the Lord what he says about this.”
9 Then the Lord said to Moses, 10 “Tell the Israelites this: It might happen sometimes that you or your descendants cannot celebrate the Lord ’s Passover at the right time. Someone might be unclean because they touched a dead body, or they might be away on a trip. They will still be able to celebrate Passover at another time. 11 They must celebrate Passover just before dark on the 14th day of the second month. At that time they must eat the lamb, the bread made without yeast, and the bitter herbs. 12 They must not leave any of that food until the next morning. And they must not break any of the bones of the lamb. They must follow all the rules about Passover. 13 But anyone who is able must celebrate Passover at the right time. If they are clean and they are not away on a trip, there is no excuse for them not to do it. If they don’t celebrate Passover at the right time, they must be separated from their people. They are guilty and must be punished, because they did not give the Lord his gift at the right time.
14 “A foreigner living among you might want to share in the Lord ’s Passover with you. This is allowed, but that person must follow all the rules about Passover. The same rules are for everyone.”
15 On the day the Holy Tent, the Tent of the Agreement, was set up, a cloud covered it. At night the cloud over the Holy Tent looked like fire. 16 The cloud stayed over the Holy Tent all the time. And at night the cloud looked like fire. 17 When the cloud moved from its place over the Holy Tent, the Israelites followed it. When the cloud stopped, that is the place where the Israelites camped. 18 This was the way the Lord showed the Israelites when to move and when to stop and set up camp. While the cloud stayed over the Holy Tent, the people continued to camp in that same place. 19 Sometimes the cloud would stay over the Holy Tent for a long time. The Israelites obeyed the Lord and did not move. 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the Holy Tent for only a few days. So the people obeyed the Lord ’s command—they followed the cloud when it moved. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only during the night—the next morning the cloud moved. So the people gathered their things and followed it. If the cloud moved, during the day or during the night, they followed it. 22 If the cloud stayed over the Holy Tent for two days, a month, or a year, the people stayed at that place. They did not leave until the cloud moved. When the cloud rose from its place and moved, they also moved. 23 So the people obeyed the Lord ’s commands. They camped when the Lord told them to, and they moved when he told them to. They watched carefully and obeyed the Lord ’s commands to Moses.
9 And the Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,
2 Let the children of Israel also keep the passover at his appointed season.
3 In the fourteenth day of this month, at even, ye shall keep it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall ye keep it.
4 And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, that they should keep the passover.
5 And they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month at even in the wilderness of Sinai: according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel.
6 And there were certain men, who were defiled by the dead body of a man, that they could not keep the passover on that day: and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day:
7 And those men said unto him, We are defiled by the dead body of a man: wherefore are we kept back, that we may not offer an offering of the Lord in his appointed season among the children of Israel?
8 And Moses said unto them, Stand still, and I will hear what the Lord will command concerning you.
9 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
10 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If any man of you or of your posterity shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be in a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the passover unto the Lord .
11 The fourteenth day of the second month at even they shall keep it, and eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
12 They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it.
13 But the man that is clean, and is not in a journey, and forbeareth to keep the passover, even the same soul shall be cut off from among his people: because he brought not the offering of the Lord in his appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.
14 And if a stranger shall sojourn among you, and will keep the passover unto the Lord ; according to the ordinance of the passover, and according to the manner thereof, so shall he do: ye shall have one ordinance, both for the stranger, and for him that was born in the land.
15 And on the day that the tabernacle was reared up the cloud covered the tabernacle, namely, the tent of the testimony: and at even there was upon the tabernacle as it were the appearance of fire, until the morning.
16 So it was alway: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night.
17 And when the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, then after that the children of Israel journeyed: and in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Israel pitched their tents.
18 At the commandment of the Lord the children of Israel journeyed, and at the commandment of the Lord they pitched: as long as the cloud abode upon the tabernacle they rested in their tents.
19 And when the cloud tarried long upon the tabernacle many days, then the children of Israel kept the charge of the Lord , and journeyed not.
20 And so it was, when the cloud was a few days upon the tabernacle; according to the commandment of the Lord they abode in their tents, and according to the commandment of the Lord they journeyed.
21 And so it was, when the cloud abode from even unto the morning, and that the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed: whether it was by day or by night that the cloud was taken up, they journeyed.
22 Or whether it were two days, or a month, or a year, that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle, remaining thereon, the children of Israel abode in their tents, and journeyed not: but when it was taken up, they journeyed.
23 At the commandment of the Lord they rested in the tents, and at the commandment of the Lord they journeyed: they kept the charge of the Lord , at the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
9 Now the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in ( A ) the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2 “Now the sons of Israel are to [ a ] celebrate the Passover at ( B ) its appointed time. 3 On the fourteenth day of this month, [ b ] at twilight, you shall celebrate it at its appointed time; you shall celebrate it in accordance with all its statutes and all its ordinances.” 4 So Moses [ c ] told the sons of Israel to celebrate the Passover. 5 And ( C ) they celebrated the Passover in the first month , on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; ( D ) in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did. 6 But there were some men who were ( E ) unclean because of contact with a [ d ] dead person, so that they could not celebrate Passover on that day; and ( F ) they came before Moses and Aaron on that day. 7 Those men said to him, “ Though we are unclean because of a [ e ] dead person, why are we kept from presenting the offering of the Lord at its appointed time among the sons of Israel?” 8 Moses then said to them, “ [ f ] ( G ) Wait, and I will listen to what the Lord will command concerning you.”
9 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If any one of you or of your generations becomes unclean because of a dead [ g ] person, or is on a distant journey, he may, however, celebrate the Passover to the Lord . 11 In the second month on the ( H ) fourteenth day at twilight, they shall celebrate it; they ( I ) shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12 They ( J ) shall not leave any of it until morning, ( K ) nor break a bone of it; they shall celebrate it in accordance with the whole statute of the Passover. 13 ( L ) But the person who is clean and is not on a journey, yet refrains from celebrating the Passover, that [ h ] person shall then be cut off from his people, because he did not present the offering of the Lord at its appointed time. That person ( M ) will bear the responsibility for his sin. 14 And ( N ) if a stranger resides among you and [ i ] celebrates the Passover to the Lord , according to the statute of the Passover and its ordinance, so he shall celebrate it ; you shall have [ j ] the ( O ) same statute, both for the stranger and for the native of the land.’”
15 Now on ( P ) the day that the tabernacle was erected, ( Q ) the cloud covered the tabernacle, the ( R ) tent of the testimony, and ( S ) in the evening it was like the appearance of fire over the tabernacle until morning. 16 That is how it was continuously; ( T ) the cloud would cover it by day , and the appearance of fire by night. 17 ( U ) Whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent, afterward the sons of Israel would set out; and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the sons of Israel would camp. 18 At the [ k ] command of the Lord the sons of Israel would set out, and at the [ l ] command of the Lord they would camp; ( V ) as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle, they remained camped. 19 Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle for many days, [ m ] the sons of Israel would comply with the Lord ’ s ordinance and not set out. 20 If [ n ] sometimes the cloud remained a few days over the tabernacle, ( W ) in accordance with the [ o ] command of the Lord they remained camped. Then in accordance with the [ p ] command of the Lord they set out. 21 If [ q ] sometimes the cloud [ r ] remained from evening until morning, when the cloud was lifted in the morning they would set out; or if it remained in the daytime and at night, whenever the cloud was lifted, they would set out. 22 Whether it was two days, a month, or a year that the cloud lingered over the tabernacle, staying above it, the sons of Israel remained camped and did not set out; but ( X ) when it was lifted, they did set out. 23 ( Y ) At the [ s ] command of the Lord they camped, and at the [ t ] command of the Lord they set out; they did what the Lord required, in accordance with the [ u ] command of the Lord through Moses.
9 The Lord spoke to Moses in the Desert of Sinai in the first month ( A ) of the second year after they came out of Egypt. ( B ) He said, 2 “Have the Israelites celebrate the Passover ( C ) at the appointed time. ( D ) 3 Celebrate it at the appointed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of this month, ( E ) in accordance with all its rules and regulations. ( F ) ”
4 So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover, ( G ) 5 and they did so in the Desert of Sinai ( H ) at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. ( I ) The Israelites did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses. ( J )
6 But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean ( K ) on account of a dead body. ( L ) So they came to Moses and Aaron ( M ) that same day 7 and said to Moses, “We have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting the Lord ’s offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time? ( N ) ”
8 Moses answered them, “Wait until I find out what the Lord commands concerning you.” ( O )
9 Then the Lord said to Moses, 10 “Tell the Israelites: ‘When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body ( P ) or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate ( Q ) the Lord ’s Passover, 11 but they are to do it on the fourteenth day of the second month ( R ) at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. ( S ) 12 They must not leave any of it till morning ( T ) or break any of its bones. ( U ) When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations. ( V ) 13 But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people ( W ) for not presenting the Lord ’s offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.
14 “‘A foreigner ( X ) residing among you is also to celebrate the Lord ’s Passover in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for both the foreigner and the native-born.’”
15 On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law, ( Y ) was set up, ( Z ) the cloud ( AA ) covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire. ( AB ) 16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire. ( AC ) 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; ( AD ) wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped. ( AE ) 18 At the Lord ’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained ( AF ) in camp. 19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the Lord ’s order ( AG ) and did not set out. ( AH ) 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the Lord ’s command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23 At the Lord ’s command they encamped, and at the Lord ’s command they set out. They obeyed the Lord ’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.
