- Numbers Chapter 27
27 Then the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, came to speak to Moses. Hepher was the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, the son of Joseph. So Zelophehad belonged to the tribe of Manasseh. His daughters were called Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. 2 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the people were standing at the front of the Tent of Meeting. Zelophehad's daughters said to them, 3 ‘Our father died in the desert. But he was not in Korah's group of men who came together to speak against the Lord . He died in the desert because of his own sin, and he did not have any sons. 4 We are his daughters, so please give us some land along with our father's male relatives. Then people will not forget our father's family name.’
5 Moses asked the Lord about this. 6 The Lord said to Moses, 7 ‘What the daughters of Zelophehad said is right. You must give to them some of the land that their father's family will receive. Give to them the land that their father would have received.
8 Tell the Israelites this: “Sometimes a man only has daughters. When he dies, his daughters must receive what belongs to their family. 9 If he does not have any sons or daughters, you must give his family's land to his brothers. 10 If he does not have any brothers, you must give his land to his father's brothers. 11 Sometimes the man's father may have no brothers. If that happens, you must give his land to another person in his family. This is a rule for all the people. The Lord gave this command to Moses.” ’
12 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go up to the top of the Abiram mountains. From there, look at the land that I am giving to the Israelites. 13 After that, you will die, just as your brother Aaron also died. 14 In the Zin desert, when the people turned against me, you did not obey my command. That happened when you hit the rock to get water at Meribah Kadesh. You did not show the people that I was holy, so now you will not go into the land of Canaan.’
15 Moses said to the Lord , 16 ‘You are the Lord , the God of the spirits of all people. Please choose another man to be leader over all the people. 17 He will lead them when they go out to fight, and he will bring them back safely. Then the Lord 's people will not be like sheep who have no shepherd.’
18 The Lord replied to Moses, ‘Choose Joshua, the son of Nun. My Spirit is in him to help him lead well. Put your hand on him to take your place as leader. 19 He must stand in front of Eleazar the priest and in front of all the Israelites. Let all the people see that he is the new leader that I have chosen. 20 Tell the people that they must obey him, because he now has your authority. 21 Eleazar the priest will use the Urim to find out from me what Joshua should do. Then Joshua can tell the people when to go out to fight, and he can lead them safely back again. He will tell all the Israelite people what they must do.’
22 Moses did as the Lord told him. He brought Joshua to stand in front of Eleazar the priest and all the people. 23 He put his hands on Joshua to show that he would be the new leader. Moses gave his authority to Joshua, as the Lord had told him to do.
27 Zelophehad was the son of Hepher. Hepher was the son of Gilead. Gilead was the son of Makir. Makir was the son of Manasseh. Manasseh was the son of Joseph. Zelophehad had five daughters. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 2 These five women went to the Meeting Tent and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and all the Israelites.
The five daughters said, 3 “Our father died while we were traveling through the desert. He died a natural death. He was not one of the men who joined Korah’s group. (Korah was the man who turned against the Lord .) But our father had no sons. 4 This means that our father’s name will not continue. It is not fair that our father’s name will not continue. His name will end because he had no sons. So we ask you to give us some of the land that our father’s brothers will get.”
5 So Moses asked the Lord what he should do. 6 The Lord said to him, 7 “The daughters of Zelophehad are right. They should share the land with their father’s brothers. So give them the land that you would have given to their father.
8 “So tell the Israelites, ‘If a man has no son, when he dies everything he owns will be given to his daughter. 9 If he has no daughter, everything he owns will be given to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, everything he owns will be given to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, everything he owns will be given to the closest relative in his family. This will be a law among the Israelites. The Lord has given this command to Moses.’”
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up on one of mountains in the desert east of the Jordan River. There you will see the land that I am giving to the Israelites. 13 After you have seen this land, you will die like your brother Aaron. 14 Remember when the people became angry at the water in the desert of Zin. Both you and Aaron refused to obey my command. You did not honor me and show the people that I am holy.” (This was at the water of Meribah [ a ] near Kadesh in the desert of Zin.)
15 Moses said to the Lord , 16 “ Lord , you are the God who knows what people are thinking. I pray that you will choose a leader for these people. [ b ] 17 I pray that you will choose a leader who will lead them out of this land and bring them into the new land. Then your people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Joshua son of Nun is very wise. [ c ] You will place your hand on him and make him the new leader. 19 Tell him to stand before Eleazar the priest and all the people. Then make him the new leader.
20 “Show the people that you are making him leader, [ d ] then all the people will obey him. 21 If Joshua needs to make a decision, he will go to Eleazar the priest. Eleazar will use the Urim to learn the Lord ’s answer. Then Joshua and all the Israelites will do the things God says. If he says, ‘go to war,’ they will go to war. And if he says, ‘go home,’ they will go home.”
22 Moses obeyed the Lord . Moses told Joshua to stand before Eleazar the priest and all the Israelites. 23 Then Moses put his hands on him to show that he was the new leader. He did this just as the Lord told him to.
27 Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.
2 And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.
4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.
5 And Moses brought their cause before the Lord .
6 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
8 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
9 And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.
10 And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father's brethren.
11 And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the Lord commanded Moses.
12 And the Lord said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.
13 And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered.
14 For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.
15 And Moses spake unto the Lord , saying,
16 Let the Lord , the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,
17 Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the Lord be not as sheep which have no shepherd.
18 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;
19 And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.
20 And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.
21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the Lord : at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.
22 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:
23 And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.
27 Then ( A ) the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came forward; and these are ( B ) the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 2 They stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, before the leaders, and all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying, 3 “Our father ( C ) died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the group of those who gathered together against the Lord , in the group of Korah; but he died in his own sin, and ( D ) he had no sons. 4 Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from among his family simply because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s brothers.” 5 ( E ) So Moses brought their case before the Lord .
6 Then the Lord said to [ a ] Moses, 7 “ ( F ) The daughters of Zelophehad are right about their statements. You shall certainly give them hereditary property among their father’s brothers, and you shall transfer the inheritance of their father to them. 8 Further, you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. 9 And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative in his own family, and he shall take possession of it; and it shall be a ( G ) statutory ordinance to the sons of Israel, just as the Lord has commanded Moses.’”
12 ( H ) Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up to this ( I ) mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel. 13 When you have seen it, you too ( J ) will be gathered to your people, ( K ) just as Aaron your brother [ b ] was; 14 for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, ( L ) you rebelled against My [ c ] command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water.” (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)
15 Then Moses spoke to the Lord , saying, 16 “ ( M ) May the Lord , the God of the spirits of [ d ] humanity, appoint a man over the congregation, 17 who ( N ) will go out [ e ] and come in before them, and lead them out and [ f ] bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord will not be ( O ) like sheep that have no shepherd.” 18 So the Lord said to Moses, “ [ g ] Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man ( P ) in whom is the Spirit, and ( Q ) lay your hand on him; 19 and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and ( R ) commission him in their sight. 20 And you shall put some of your [ h ] authority on him, so that all the congregation of the sons of Israel will obey him . 21 Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him ( S ) by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord . At his [ i ] command they shall go out, and at his [ j ] command they shall come in, both he and all the sons of Israel with him, all the congregation.” 22 Then Moses did just as the Lord commanded him; he took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and ( T ) commissioned him, just as the Lord had spoken [ k ] through Moses.
27 The daughters of Zelophehad ( B ) son of Hepher, ( C ) the son of Gilead, ( D ) the son of Makir, ( E ) the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward 2 and stood before Moses, ( F ) Eleazar the priest, the leaders ( G ) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting ( H ) and said, 3 “Our father died in the wilderness. ( I ) He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord , ( J ) but he died for his own sin and left no sons. ( K ) 4 Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
5 So Moses brought their case ( L ) before the Lord , ( M ) 6 and the Lord said to him, 7 “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance ( N ) among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them. ( O )
8 “Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law ( P ) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain ( Q ) in the Abarim Range ( R ) and see the land ( S ) I have given the Israelites. ( T ) 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, ( U ) as your brother Aaron ( V ) was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, ( W ) both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy ( X ) before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah ( Y ) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)
15 Moses said to the Lord , 16 “May the Lord , the God who gives breath to all living things, ( Z ) appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord ’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” ( AA )
18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, [ a ] ( AB ) and lay your hand on him. ( AC ) 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him ( AD ) in their presence. ( AE ) 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. ( AF ) 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring ( AG ) of the Urim ( AH ) before the Lord . At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”
22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, ( AI ) as the Lord instructed through Moses.
