The Israelites worship false gods

25 The Israelites were staying in Shittim. The men began to have sex with the women from Moab. 2 The women from Moab took Israelite men to watch them as they offered sacrifices to the gods of Moab. The Israelite men joined with the Moabite women to eat at their feasts. They also worshipped the gods of Moab. 3 The Israelites joined the Moabite women to worship their god, Baal of Peor. So the Lord became very angry with them.

4 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Take hold of all the leaders of these people. Hang them up during the day so that they die and people see them. Do what I tell you, so that I will no longer be angry against the Israelites.’

5 Moses told the officers of the Israelites, ‘Each of you, kill the men who have worshipped the god, Baal of Peor.’

6 Moses and all the people were at the door of the Tent of Meeting. They were weeping. While they were there, an Israelite man brought a Midianite woman into his tent. Moses and all the people could see them. 7 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest, saw what happened. So he stood up among all the people and he took a spear in his hand. 8 He went into the man's tent. He pushed the spear through the body of the man and the Midianite woman. When he did that, the bad disease that was killing the Israelites stopped. 9 But 24,000 people had already died as a result of the disease.

10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 ‘I am no longer angry with the Israelites. That is because of what Phinehas, the son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest, did. He did not want the people to worship any god except me. Because of him, I did not kill all the Israelites. 12 So you must tell him that I have promised that my peace will be with him. 13 That promise will be for him and for his descendants after him. They will always be priests. That is because he did not want the people to worship any god except me. He has removed the sin of the Israelites so that I could forgive them.’

14 The name of the man that Phinehas killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri. He was the son of Salu. Salu was the leader of a clan from the tribe of Simeon. 15 The name of the Midianite woman was Cozbi. She was the daughter of Zur. Zur was a leader of a Midianite clan.

16 The Lord said to Moses, 17 ‘Attack the Midianites and destroy them. 18 They have deceived you and they have become your enemies. They took some of you to worship their god Peor. They used Cozbi to make you do a wrong thing, and she was the daughter of a Midianite leader. Phinehas killed her on the day when the bad disease killed many Israelites at Peor mountain.’

Israel at Peor

25 While the Israelites were camped near Acacia, the men committed sexual sins [ a ] with Moabite women. 2-3 The Moabite women invited the men to come and join in their sacrifices to their false gods. So the Israelites joined in worshiping these false gods—they ate the sacrifices and worshiped these gods. There the Israelites began worshiping the false god, Baal of Peor. And the Lord became very angry with them.

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Get all the leaders of these people. Then kill them so that all the people can see. [ b ] Lay their bodies before the Lord . Then the Lord will not show his anger against all the Israelites.”

5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must find the men in your tribe who have led people to worship the false god, Baal of Peor. Then you must kill these men.”

6 At the time Moses and all the elders of Israel were gathered together at the entrance to the Meeting Tent. An Israelite man brought a Midianite woman home to his brothers. [ c ] He did this where Moses and all the leaders could see. Moses and the leaders were very sad. 7 Phinehas was the son of Eleazar and the grandson of Aaron the priest. Phinehas saw this man bring the woman into camp. So he left the meeting and got his spear. 8 He followed the Israelite into the tent. Then he used the spear to kill the Israelite man and the Midianite woman in her tent. [ d ] He pushed the spear through both of their bodies. At that time there was a great sickness among the Israelites. But when Phinehas killed these two people, the sickness stopped. 9 A total of 24,000 people died from that sickness.

10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “I was so angry with the Israelites that I wanted to kill them. But Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest, has saved them from my anger. He did this by showing that he feels strongly, just as I do, that my people must worship only me. 12 Tell Phinehas that I am making a peace agreement with him. 13 This is the agreement: He and all of his family who live after him will always be priests, because he had strong feelings for his God. And he did what was needed to make the Israelites pure.”

14 The Israelite man who was killed with the Midianite woman was named Zimri son of Salu. He was the leader of a family in the tribe of Simeon. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi. [ e ] She was the daughter of Zur. Zur was the head of a family and leader of a Midianite tribe.

16 The Lord said to Moses, 17 “The Midianites are your enemies. You must kill them. 18 They have already made you their enemies. They tricked you at Peor. And they tricked you with the woman named Cozbi. She was the daughter of a Midianite leader, but she was killed when the sickness came to the Israelites. That sickness was caused because the people were tricked into worshiping the false god Baal of Peor.”

Footnotes

  1. Numbers 25:1 sexual sins Sexual sin was often connected with temples for false gods. So this can mean that the men were unfaithful to their wives and also that they were unfaithful to God by going to their temples.
  2. Numbers 25:4 so that all the people can see Literally, “before the sun.”
  3. Numbers 25:6 brothers Or “family.”
  4. Numbers 25:8 her tent This was probably a special tent that showed this woman was a prostitute serving the false god, Baal of Peor.
  5. Numbers 25:15 Cozbi This name is like the Hebrew word meaning “my lie.”

25 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.

4 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel.

5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

10 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

14 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.

15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

16 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them:

18 For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.

The Sin of Peor

25 While Israel remained at ( A ) Shittim, the people began ( B ) to commit infidelity with the daughters of Moab. 2 For ( C ) they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3 So ( D ) Israel [ a ] became followers of [ b ] Baal of Peor, and the Lord was angry with Israel. 4 And the Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and [ c ] execute them [ d ] in broad daylight before the Lord , ( E ) so that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.” 5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you ( F ) kill his men who have [ e ] become followers of [ f ] Baal of Peor.”

6 Then behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought to his relatives a ( G ) Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, ( H ) while they were weeping at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 7 ( I ) When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand, 8 and he went after the man of Israel into the inner room of the tent and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman, through the abdomen. ( J ) So the plague on the sons of Israel was brought to a halt. 9 ( K ) But those who died from the plague were twenty-four thousand in number .

The Zeal of Phinehas

10 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 11 ( L ) Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has averted My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was [ g ] jealous with My [ h ] jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel ( M ) in My [ i ] jealousy. 12 Therefore say, ‘ ( N ) Behold, I am giving him My ( O ) covenant of peace; 13 and it shall be for him and for his [ j ] descendants after him, a covenant of a ( P ) permanent priesthood, because he was [ k ] jealous for his God and ( Q ) made atonement for the sons of Israel.’”

14 Now the name of the [ l ] dead man of Israel who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s household among the Simeonites. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was ( R ) Cozbi the daughter of ( S ) Zur, [ m ] who was head of the people of a father’s household in Midian.

16 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 17 ( T ) Be hostile to the Midianites and attack them; 18 for they have been hostile to you with their tricks, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was killed on the day of the plague because of Peor.”

Moab Seduces Israel

25 While Israel was staying in Shittim, ( A ) the men began to indulge in sexual immorality ( B ) with Moabite ( C ) women, ( D ) 2 who invited them to the sacrifices ( E ) to their gods. ( F ) The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to ( G ) the Baal of Peor. ( H ) And the Lord ’s anger burned against them.

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders ( I ) of these people, kill them and expose ( J ) them in broad daylight before the Lord , ( K ) so that the Lord ’s fierce anger ( L ) may turn away from Israel.”

5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death ( M ) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.” ( N )

6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite ( O ) woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping ( P ) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas ( Q ) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear ( R ) in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; ( S ) 9 but those who died in the plague ( T ) numbered 24,000. ( U )

10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. ( V ) Since he was as zealous for my honor ( W ) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace ( X ) with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, ( Y ) because he was zealous ( Z ) for the honor ( AA ) of his God and made atonement ( AB ) for the Israelites.” ( AC )

14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman ( AD ) was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. ( AE ) 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi ( AF ) daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family. ( AG )

16 The Lord said to Moses, ( AH ) 17 “Treat the Midianites ( AI ) as enemies ( AJ ) and kill them. ( AK ) 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident ( AL ) involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
