The Israelites destroy the Canaanites

21 The king of Arad city lived in the Negev desert. That was in the south part of Canaan. People told him that the Israelites were coming on the road to Atharim. So he attacked the Israelites and he caught some of them. 2 The Israelites made this promise to the Lord : ‘If you put these people under our power, we will destroy their towns for you.’ 3 The Lord accepted the Israelites' promise. He put the Canaanites under their power. The Israelites destroyed them and all their towns. After that, the place was called Hormah. [ a ]

The bronze snake

4 The Israelites left Hor mountain. They travelled round the edge of Edom to the Red Sea. As they travelled, the people were upset. 5 They complained to God and to Moses, ‘You should not have brought us from Egypt to die here in the desert. There is nothing to eat. There is no water to drink. We do not like this bad food, manna.’

6 Then the Lord sent snakes among the people. They bit the people and many of the Israelites died. 7 So the people came to Moses and they said, ‘We did a bad thing when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Please pray to the Lord on our behalf. Ask him to remove the snakes from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people.

8 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a model of a snake and put it up high on a pole. When a snake bites anyone, they must look at the bronze snake. Then they will not die.’ 9 Moses made a bronze snake and he put it on a pole. When a snake bit anyone and they looked at the bronze snake, they did not die.

The Israelites travel to Moab

10 The Israelites put up their tents at Oboth. 11 Then they travelled from Oboth, and they put up their tents at Iye-Abarim, in the desert. That place is on the east border of the country called Moab. 12 Then they put up their tents in Zered valley. 13 Then they left there and they put up their tents on the north side of the River Arnon. The River Arnon is the border between the Moabites and the Amorites. 14 You can read about this in the Book of the Lord 's Wars. It talks about Waheb in Suphah and about the valleys of the River Arnon. 15 It also speaks about the sides of the valleys on the border of Moab that lead to the town of Ar.

16 From there, the Israelites continued to travel until they arrived at Beer. That is the well where the Lord had said to Moses, ‘Bring the people together. Then I will give water to them.’ 17 The Israelites sang this song at that well:

‘Sing to this well.
Ask it to give water to us.
18 This was the well that our rulers dug.
Our leaders dug it with their sceptres and their ruler's sticks.’

After that, the Israelites went from the desert to Mattanah. 19 Then they went from Mattanah to Nahaliel. They went from Nahaliel to Bamoth. 20 They went from Bamoth to the valley in the region of Moab. They put up their tents near the top of Pisgah mountain that is high above the desert. [ b ]

The Israelites fight against Sihon and Og

21 The Israelites sent men with a message to Sihon, the king of the Amorites. 22 They said, ‘Please let us travel through your country. We will not go through any fields or through any vineyards. We will not even drink water from your wells. We will go along the main road. We will not leave that road on either side until we have gone through all your land.’

23 But Sihon would not let the Israelites travel through his land. Sihon and his army marched to Jahaz, in the desert. They attacked the Israelites there. 24 The Israelites fought against the army of Sihon and they won. They got power over the land from the River Arnon to the River Jabbok. But the border of the Ammonites' land had strong towns, so they could not go beyond them. 25 They got power over all the cities of the Amorites. Those cities included Heshbon and the towns round it. 26 Heshbon was the city of Sihon, the king of the Amorites. He had fought against the king of Moab. He took from the king of Moab the land as far as the River Arnon. 27 So the people who write songs wrote this:

‘Come to Heshbon and build it up again.
Build the city of Sihon again.
28 An army that was like a fire went out from Heshbon.
It was like a flame that went out from Sihon's city.
It destroyed Ar in Moab,
and everything on the hills near the River Arnon.
29 It will be very bad for you, people of Moab.
Sihon has killed you people who worship the god Chemosh.
Your god has let the king of the Amorites put you in prison.
30 But now, we have won against them!
We have destroyed Heshbon, and as far as Dibon.
We have killed them from Nophah to Medeba.’

31 So the Israelites stayed in the land of the Amorites. 32 Moses sent men to find the best way to attack Jazer. Then the Israelites attacked Jazer and the towns round it. They caused the Amorites who lived there to run away.

33 After that, the Israelites travelled towards Bashan. Og, the king of Bashan, marched out with his army to fight against them at Edrei.

34 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Do not be afraid of Og. I will put him under your power, as well as his army and his land. Attack him in the same way that you attacked Sihon, the king of the Amorites who ruled in Heshbon.’

35 So they killed Og and his sons and all his army. Nobody was left alive. Their land became the Israelites' land.

Footnotes

  1. 21:3 Hormah means ‘destroyed’.
  2. 21:20 The Israelites continued to travel north towards Canaan.

War With the Canaanites

21 The Canaanite king of Arad lived in the Negev. He heard that the Israelites were coming on the road to Atharim, so the king went out and attacked the Israelites. Arad captured some of the people and made them prisoners. 2 Then the Israelites made a special promise to the Lord : “Please help us defeat these people. If you do this, we will give their cities to you. We will totally destroy them.”

3 The Lord listened to the Israelites and helped them defeat the Canaanites. They completely destroyed the Canaanites and their cities. So that place was named Hormah. [ a ]

The Bronze Snake

4 The Israelites left Mount Hor and traveled on the road that goes to the Red Sea. They did this to go around the country of Edom. But the people became impatient. 5 They began complaining against God and Moses. The people said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? We will die here in the desert! There is no bread and no water! And we hate this terrible food!”

6 So the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people. The snakes bit the people, and many of the Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, “We know that we sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord . Ask him to take away these snakes.” So Moses prayed for them.

8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. If anyone is bitten by a snake, that person should look at the bronze snake on the pole. Then that person will not die.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Then when a snake bit anyone, that person looked at the bronze snake on the pole and lived.

The Trip to Moab

10 The Israelites left that place and camped at Oboth. 11 Then they left Oboth and camped at Iye Abarim in the desert east of Moab. 12 They left that place and camped in Zered Valley. 13 Then they moved and camped across from the Arnon River in the desert. This river started at the Ammonite border. The valley was the border between Moab and the Amorites. 14 That is why these words are written in the Book of the Wars of the Lord :

“… and Waheb in Suphah, and the Valleys of the Arnon, 15 and the hills by the valleys that lead to the town of Ar. These places are at the border of Moab.”

16 The Israelites left that place and traveled to Beer. [ b ] There is a well in Beer, where the Lord said to Moses, “Bring the people together here, and I will give them water.” 17 Then the Israelites sang this song:

“Well, flow with water!
Sing about it!
18 Great men dug this well.
Important leaders dug this well.
They dug this well with their staffs and walking sticks.
It is a gift in the desert.” [ c ]

19 The people traveled from Mattanah to Nahaliel. Then they traveled from Nahaliel to Bamoth. 20 They traveled from Bamoth to the Valley of Moab. In this place the top of the Pisgah Mountain looks over the desert.

Sihon and Og

21 The Israelites sent some men to King Sihon of the Amorites. The men said to the king,

22 “Allow us to travel through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard. We will not drink water from any of your wells. We will travel only along King’s Road. We will stay on that road until we have traveled through your country.”

23 But King Sihon would not allow the Israelites to travel through his country. He gathered together his army and marched out to the desert to fight against the Israelites. The king’s army fought against the Israelites at Jahaz.

24 But the Israelites defeated the king and took his land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River. The Israelites took the land as far as the Ammonite border. They stopped at that border because it was strongly defended by the Ammonites. 25 Israel took all the Amorite cities and began living in them. They even defeated the city of Heshbon and all the small towns around it. 26 Heshbon was the city where Sihon, the Amorite king, lived. In the past Sihon had fought with the king of Moab. Sihon had taken the land as far as the Arnon River. 27 That is why the singers sing this song:

“Go in and rebuild Heshbon!
Make Sihon’s city strong.
28 A fire began in Heshbon.
That fire began in Sihon’s city.
The fire destroyed Ar in Moab.
It burned the hills above Arnon River.
29 It is bad for you, Moab.
You lost Chemosh’s people.
His sons ran away.
His daughters were taken prisoners by Sihon, king of the Amorites.
30 But we defeated those Amorites.
We destroyed their towns from Heshbon to Dibon,
from Nashim to Nophah, near Medeba.”

31 So the Israelites made their camp in the land of the Amorites.

32 Moses sent some men to look at the town of Jazer. Then the Israelites captured that town and the small towns that were around it. They forced the Amorites who were living there to leave.

33 Then the Israelites traveled on the road toward Bashan. King Og of Bashan got his army and marched out to meet the Israelites. He fought against them at Edrei.

34 But the Lord said to Moses, “Don’t be afraid of that king. I will allow you to defeat him. You will take his whole army and all his land. Do the same to him as you did to Sihon, the Amorite king who lived in Heshbon.”

35 So the Israelites defeated Og and his army. They killed him, his sons, and all his army. Then the Israelites took all his land.

Footnotes

  1. Numbers 21:3 Hormah This name means “completely destroyed” or “a gift given totally to God.” See Lev. 27:28-29.
  2. Numbers 21:16 Beer This Hebrew name means “well.”
  3. Numbers 21:18 gift in the desert In Hebrew this is the name “Mattanah.”

21 And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.

2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord , and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

3 And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.

4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

6 And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord , and against thee; pray unto the Lord , that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

8 And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

10 And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth.

11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ijeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.

12 From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.

13 From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord , What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

15 And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Moab.

16 And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the Lord spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

17 Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

18 The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:

19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:

20 And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon.

21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

22 Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king's high way, until we be past thy borders.

23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

25 And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.

27 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:

28 For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.

29 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.

31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

32 And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and og the king of bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at edrei.

34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.

Arad Conquered

21 When the Canaanite, the king of ( A ) Arad, who lived in the [ a ] Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. 2 So ( B ) Israel made a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed hand over this people to me, then I will [ b ] utterly destroy their cities.” 3 The Lord heard the voice of Israel and turned over the Canaanites; then they [ c ] utterly destroyed them and their cities. And the place was named [ d ] ( C ) Hormah.

4 Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the [ e ] Red Sea, to ( D ) go around the land of Edom; and the [ f ] people became impatient because of the journey. 5 So the people spoke against God and Moses: “ ( E ) Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no [ g ] food and no water, and [ h ] ( F ) we are disgusted with [ i ] this miserable food.”

The Bronze Serpent

6 ( G ) Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people and ( H ) they bit the people, so that ( I ) many people of Israel died. 7 ( J ) So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and against you; ( K ) intercede with the Lord , that He will remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people. 8 Then the Lord said to Moses, “ [ j ] Make a ( L ) fiery serpent , and put it on a flag pole ; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, and looks at it, will live.” 9 So Moses made a ( M ) bronze serpent and put it on the flag pole ; and it came about, that if a serpent bit someone, and he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

10 ( N ) Now the sons of Israel moved out and camped in Oboth. 11 Then they journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, to the [ k ] east. 12 ( O ) From there they set out and camped in [ l ] Wadi Zered. 13 From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites; ( P ) for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 For that reason it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord ,

“Waheb in Suphah,
And the [ m ] wadis of the Arnon,
15 And the slope of the wadis
That extends to the site of ( Q ) Ar,
And leans to the border of Moab.”

16 ( R ) From there they continued to [ n ] Beer, that is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Assemble the people, that I may give them water.”

17 ( S ) Then Israel sang this song:

“Spring up, O well! Sing to it!
18 The well, which the leaders dug,
Which the nobles of the people hollowed out,
With the scepter and with their staffs.”

And from the wilderness they continued to Mattanah, 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the land of Moab, at the top of Pisgah, which overlooks the [ o ] desert.

Two Victories

21 ( T ) Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying, 22 ( U ) Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king’s road until we have passed through your border.” 23 ( V ) But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border. Instead, Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and came to ( W ) Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 Then ( X ) Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the ( Y ) border of the sons of Ammon was [ p ] Jazer. 25 Israel took all these cities, and ( Z ) Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all her [ q ] villages. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon. 27 For that reason those who use proverbs say,

“Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!
So let the city of Sihon be established.
28 ( AA ) For a fire spread from Heshbon,
A flame from the town of Sihon;
It devoured ( AB ) Ar of Moab,
The [ r ] ( AC ) dominant [ s ] heights of the Arnon.
29 ( AD ) Woe to you, Moab!
You are destroyed, people of ( AE ) Chemosh!
( AF ) He has given his sons as fugitives,
( AG ) And his daughters into captivity,
To an Amorite king, Sihon.
30 But we have shot them down with arrows ,
Heshbon is destroyed as far as ( AH ) Dibon,
Then we have laid waste as far as Nophah,
Which reaches to Medeba.”

31 So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites. 32 Now Moses sent men to spy out ( AI ) Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.

33 ( AJ ) Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out against them [ t ] with all his people, for battle at ( AK ) Edrei. 34 But the Lord said to Moses, “ ( AL ) Do not fear him, for I have handed him over to you, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.” 35 So ( AM ) they [ u ] killed him and his sons and all his people, until there was no survivor left; and they took possession of his land.

Arad Destroyed

21 When the Canaanite king of Arad, ( A ) who lived in the Negev, ( B ) heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. 2 Then Israel made this vow ( C ) to the Lord : “If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy [ a ] ( D ) their cities.” 3 The Lord listened to Israel’s plea and gave the Canaanites ( E ) over to them. They completely destroyed them ( F ) and their towns; so the place was named Hormah. [ b ] ( G )

The Bronze Snake

4 They traveled from Mount Hor ( H ) along the route to the Red Sea, [ c ] ( I ) to go around Edom. ( J ) But the people grew impatient on the way; ( K ) 5 they spoke against God ( L ) and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt ( M ) to die in the wilderness? ( N ) There is no bread! There is no water! ( O ) And we detest this miserable food!” ( P )

6 Then the Lord sent venomous snakes ( Q ) among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. ( R ) 7 The people came to Moses ( S ) and said, “We sinned ( T ) when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord ( U ) will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed ( V ) for the people.

8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; ( W ) anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake ( X ) and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived. ( Y )

The Journey to Moab

10 The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth. ( Z ) 11 Then they set out from Oboth and camped in Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that faces Moab ( AA ) toward the sunrise. 12 From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley. ( AB ) 13 They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon ( AC ) , which is in the wilderness extending into Amorite territory. The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. ( AD ) 14 That is why the Book of the Wars ( AE ) of the Lord says:

“. . . Zahab [ d ] in Suphah and the ravines,
the Arnon 15 and [ e ] the slopes of the ravines
that lead to the settlement of Ar ( AF )
and lie along the border of Moab.”

16 From there they continued on to Beer, ( AG ) the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together and I will give them water.”

17 Then Israel sang this song: ( AH )

“Spring up, O well!
Sing about it,
18 about the well that the princes dug,
that the nobles of the people sank—
the nobles with scepters and staffs.”

Then they went from the wilderness to Mattanah, 19 from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah ( AI ) overlooks the wasteland.

Defeat of Sihon and Og

21 Israel sent messengers ( AJ ) to say to Sihon ( AK ) king of the Amorites: ( AL )

22 “Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory. ( AM )

23 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. ( AN ) He mustered his entire army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, ( AO ) he fought with Israel. ( AP ) 24 Israel, however, put him to the sword ( AQ ) and took over his land ( AR ) from the Arnon to the Jabbok, ( AS ) but only as far as the Ammonites, ( AT ) because their border was fortified. 25 Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites ( AU ) and occupied them, ( AV ) including Heshbon ( AW ) and all its surrounding settlements. 26 Heshbon was the city of Sihon ( AX ) king of the Amorites, ( AY ) who had fought against the former king of Moab ( AZ ) and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon. ( BA )

27 That is why the poets say:

“Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt;
let Sihon’s city be restored.

28 “Fire went out from Heshbon,
a blaze from the city of Sihon. ( BB )
It consumed ( BC ) Ar ( BD ) of Moab,
the citizens of Arnon’s heights. ( BE )
29 Woe to you, Moab! ( BF )
You are destroyed, people of Chemosh! ( BG )
He has given up his sons as fugitives ( BH )
and his daughters as captives ( BI )
to Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 “But we have overthrown them;
Heshbon’s dominion has been destroyed all the way to Dibon. ( BJ )
We have demolished them as far as Nophah,
which extends to Medeba. ( BK )

31 So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites. ( BL )

32 After Moses had sent spies ( BM ) to Jazer, ( BN ) the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. 33 Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan ( BO ) , ( BP ) and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei. ( BQ )

34 The Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. ( BR )

35 So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors. ( BS ) And they took possession of his land. ( BT )
