Where the tribes put up their tents

2 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 2 ‘The Israelites must put up their tents on each side of the Tent of Meeting. They must not be very near to it but they must be all around it. They must live together in their tribes. Each person must be with his own tribe. Each tribe must have its own flag. [ a ]

3 The people in Judah's tribe must be on the east side of the Tent. They must have their flag with them, and they must put up their tents in groups. The leader of the tribe of Judah is Nahshon, the son of Amminadab. 4 There will be 74,600 soldiers in his army.

5 The tribe of Issachar will put up their tents on one side of Judah's camp. The leader of the tribe of Issachar is Nethanel, the son of Zuar. 6 There will be 54,400 soldiers in his army.

7 The tribe of Zebulun will be on the other side of Judah's camp. The leader of the tribe of Zebulun is Eliab, the son of Helon. 8 There will be 57,400 soldiers in his army.

9 So there will be 186,400 soldiers in the three groups on Judah's side of the camp. When the people travel, these tribes will march first.

10 The tribe of Reuben must be on the south side of the Tent. They must have their flag with them, and they must put up their tents in groups. The leader of the tribe of Reuben is Elizur, the son of Shedeur. 11 There will be 46,500 soldiers in his army.

12 The tribe of Simeon will put up their tents on one side of Reuben's camp. The leader of the tribe of Simeon is Shelumiel, the son of Zurishaddai. 13 There will be 59,300 soldiers in his army.

14 The tribe of Gad will be on the other side of Reuben's camp. The leader of the tribe of Gad is Eliasaph, the son of Deuel. 15 There will be 45,650 soldiers in his army.

16 So there will be 151,450 soldiers in the three groups on Reuben's side of the camp. When the people travel, they will march second.

17 The Levites must march next. The Levites must carry the Tent of Meeting. They must march between the first two groups of tribes and the last two groups of tribes. Each man must be in his own place. They must march with their flag.

18 The tribe of Ephraim must be on the west side of the Tent. They must have their flag with them and they must live in groups. The leader of the tribe of Ephraim is Elishama, the son of Ammihud. 19 There will be 40,500 soldiers in his army.

20 The tribe of Manasseh will be on one side of Ephraim's camp. The leader of the tribe of Manasseh is Gamaliel, the son of Pedahzur. 21 There will be 32,200 soldiers in his army.

22 The tribe of Benjamin will be on the other side of Ephraim's camp. The leader of the tribe of Benjamin is Abidan, the son of Gideoni. 23 There will be 35,400 soldiers in his army.

24 So there will be 108,100 soldiers in the three groups on Ephraim's side of the camp. When the people travel, they will march third.

25 The tribe of Dan must be on the north side of the Tent. They must have their flag with them and they must live in groups. The leader of the tribe of Dan is Ahiezer, the son of Ammishaddai. 26 There will be 62,700 soldiers in his army.

27 The tribe of Asher will put up their tents on one side of Dan's camp. The leader of the tribe of Asher is Pagiel, the son of Ocran. 28 There will be 41,500 soldiers in his army.

29 The tribe of Naphtali will be on the other side of Dan's camp. The leader of the tribe of Naphtali is Ahira, the son of Enan. 30 There will be 53,400 soldiers in his army.

31 So there will be 157,600 soldiers in the three groups on Dan's side of the camp. They will march last with their flag.’

32 In that way, Moses and his helpers counted all the Israelite men who were able to fight. They counted them in groups, clan by clan. There were 603,550 soldiers. 33 They did not count the Levites among the other Israelites. That was what the Lord had told Moses.

34 The Israelites did everything that the Lord had told Moses. They put up their tents in groups, as the Lord wanted. Each tribe put up its tents under its own flag. When they started to travel, each man walked with his own clan and his own family.

Footnotes

  1. 2:2 The tribes put up their tents in a square, with the Tent of Meeting in the middle.

The Camp Arrangement

2 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 2 “The Israelites should make their camps around the Meeting Tent. Each division will have its own special flag, and everyone will camp near their group’s flag.

3 “The flag of the camp of Judah will be on the east side, where the sun rises. The people of Judah will camp near its flag. The leader of the people of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab. 4 There are 74,600 men in his division.

5 “The tribe of Issachar will camp next to the tribe of Judah. The leader of the tribe of Issachar is Nethanel son of Zuar. 6 There are 54,400 men in his division.

7 “The tribe of Zebulun will also camp next to the tribe of Judah. The leader of the tribe of Zebulun is Eliab son of Helon. 8 There are 57,400 men in his division.

9 “The total number of men in Judah’s camp is 186,400. All these men are divided into their different tribes. Judah will be the first group to move when the people travel from one place to another.

10 “The flag of Reuben’s camp will be south of the Holy Tent. Each group will camp near its flag. The leader of the tribe of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur. 11 There are 46,500 men in this division.

12 “The tribe of Simeon will camp next to the tribe of Reuben. The leader of the tribe of Simeon is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 13 There are 59,300 men in this division.

14 “The tribe of Gad will also camp next to the tribe of Reuben. The leader of the tribe of Gad is Eliasaph son of Deuel. [ a ] 15 There are 45,650 men in this division.

16 “The total number of men in all the divisions of Reuben’s camp is 151,450. His camp will be the second group to move when the people travel from place to place.

17 “When the people travel, Levi’s camp will move next. The Meeting Tent will be with them between the other camps. The people will make their camps in the same order that they move.

18 “The flag of the camp of Ephraim will be on the west side. The division of Ephraim will camp there. The leader of the tribe of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud. 19 There are 40,500 men in this division.

20 “The tribe of Manasseh will camp next to Ephraim’s family. The leader of the tribe of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 21 There are 32,200 men in this division.

22 “The tribe of Benjamin will also camp next to Ephraim’s family. The leader of the tribe of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni. 23 There are 35,400 men in this division.

24 “The total number of men in Ephraim’s camp is 108,100. They will be the third family to move when the people travel from one place to another.

25 “The flag of Dan’s camp will be on the north side. The tribes of Dan will camp there. The leader of the tribe of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26 There are 62,700 men in this division.

27 “The people from the tribe of Asher will camp next to the tribe of Dan. The leader of the tribe of Asher is Pagiel son of Ocran. 28 There are 41,500 men in this division.

29 “The tribe of Naphtali will also camp next to the tribe of Dan. The leader of the tribe of Naphtali is Ahira son of Enan. 30 There are 53,400 men in this division.

31 “There are 157,600 men in Dan’s camp. They will be the last to move when the people travel from place to place. Each group will have its own flag.”

32 So these were the Israelites. They were counted by families. The total number of Israelite men in the camps, counted by divisions, is 603,550. 33 Moses obeyed the Lord and did not count the Levites with the other Israelites.

34 So the Israelites did everything the Lord told Moses. Each group camped under its own flag. And everyone stayed with their own family and family group.

32 These are those which were numbered of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers: all those that were numbered of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

33 But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the Lord commanded Moses.

34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses: so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, every one after their families, according to the house of their fathers.

Arrangement of the Camps

2 Now the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 2 ( A ) The sons of Israel shall camp, each by his own [ a ] flag, with the banners of their fathers’ households; they shall camp around the tent of meeting [ b ] at a distance. 3 Now those who camp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the flag of the camp of Judah, by their armies; and the leader of the sons of Judah: ( B ) Nahshon the son of Amminadab, 4 and his army, their [ c ] numbered men: 74,600. 5 Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar; and the leader of the sons of Issachar: ( C ) Nethanel the son of Zuar, 6 and his army, their numbered men: 54,400. 7 Then follows the tribe of Zebulun; and the leader of the sons of Zebulun: ( D ) Eliab the son of Helon, 8 and his army, his numbered men: 57,400. 9 The total of the numbered men of the camp of Judah: 186,400, by their armies. ( E ) They shall set out first.

10 “On the south side shall be the flag of the camp of Reuben by their armies; and the leader of the sons of Reuben: ( F ) Elizur the son of Shedeur, 11 and his army, their numbered men: 46,500. 12 And those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Simeon; and the leader of the sons of Simeon: ( G ) Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, 13 and his army, their numbered men: 59,300. 14 Then follows the tribe of Gad; and the leader of the sons of Gad: ( H ) Eliasaph the son of [ d ] Deuel, 15 and his army, their numbered men: 45,650. 16 The total of the numbered men of the camp of Reuben: 151,450 by their armies. And ( I ) they shall set out second.

17 ( J ) Then the tent of meeting shall set out with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps; just as they camp, so they shall set out, every man in his place by their flags.

18 “On the west side shall be the flag of the camp of ( K ) Ephraim by their armies; and the leader of the sons of Ephraim: ( L ) Elishama the son of Ammihud, 19 and his army, their numbered men: 40,500. 20 Next to him shall be the tribe of Manasseh; and the leader of the sons of Manasseh: ( M ) Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur, 21 and his army, their numbered men, 32,200. 22 Then follows the tribe of ( N ) Benjamin; and the leader of the sons of Benjamin: ( O ) Abidan the son of Gideoni, 23 and his army, their numbered men, 35,400. 24 The total of the numbered men of the camp of Ephraim: 108,100, by their armies. And ( P ) they shall set out third.

25 “On the north side shall be the flag of the camp of Dan by their armies; and the leader of the sons of Dan: ( Q ) Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai, 26 and his army, their numbered men: 62,700. 27 Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher; and the leader of the sons of Asher: ( R ) Pagiel the son of Ochran, 28 and his army, their numbered men: 41,500. 29 Then follows the tribe of ( S ) Naphtali; and the leader of the sons of Naphtali: ( T ) Ahira the son of Enan, 30 and his army, their numbered men: 53,400. 31 The total of the numbered men of the camp of Dan was 157,600. ( U ) They shall set out last by their flags.”

32 These are the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers’ households; the total of the numbered men of the camps by their armies, ( V ) 603,550. 33 ( W ) The Levites, however, were not counted among the sons of Israel, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 34 So the sons of Israel did all this ; according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so they camped by their flags, and so they set out, everyone by his family according to his father’s household.

16 All the men assigned to the camp of Reuben, ( M ) according to their divisions, number 151,450. They will set out second.

17 Then the tent of meeting and the camp of the Levites ( N ) will set out in the middle of the camps. They will set out in the same order as they encamp, each in their own place under their standard.

18 On the west ( O ) will be the divisions of the camp of Ephraim ( P ) under their standard. The leader of the people of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud. ( Q ) 19 His division numbers 40,500.

20 The tribe of Manasseh ( R ) will be next to them. The leader of the people of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. ( S ) 21 His division numbers 32,200.

22 The tribe of Benjamin ( T ) will be next. The leader of the people of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni. ( U ) 23 His division numbers 35,400.

24 All the men assigned to the camp of Ephraim, ( V ) according to their divisions, number 108,100. They will set out third. ( W )

25 On the north ( X ) will be the divisions of the camp of Dan under their standard. ( Y ) The leader of the people of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. ( Z ) 26 His division numbers 62,700.

32 These are the Israelites, counted according to their families. ( AE ) All the men in the camps, by their divisions, number 603,550. ( AF ) 33 The Levites, however, were not counted ( AG ) along with the other Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.

34 So the Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses; that is the way they encamped under their standards, and that is the way they set out, each of them with their clan and family.
