- Numbers Chapter 10
10 The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Make two trumpets from one piece of silver. Use a hammer to make them in the right shape. Make a noise with them to tell the people that they must come together. Also, use the trumpets to tell the people that they must move the camp. 3 When the people hear the sound from both trumpets, all the people must meet you. They must meet you at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 4 But you may want only the leaders of Israel's tribes to meet you. If you want that, a priest should make the sound from only one trumpet. 5 But when the sound is one short sound, the tribes on the east side of the camp must start to travel. 6 When they hear the next short sound, the tribes on the south side of the camp must start to travel. Short sounds from the trumpet will tell the people that they must start to travel. 7 But when you want everyone to meet together, make a different sound with the trumpet.
8 The priests, the sons of Aaron, must use the trumpets to make a noise. This is a rule for you and for all your descendants. 9 Use the trumpets to tell everyone when an enemy is attacking you in your own land. Make a sound with the trumpets to tell the people that they must fight the enemy. Then the Lord your God will hear and he will save you from your enemies. 10 You must make sounds with the trumpets on your happy days, too. And you must make sounds with the trumpets at your regular festivals and on the first days of your months. And you must make sounds with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over your friendship offerings. God will hear and he will remember you. I am the Lord your God.’
11 In the second year, in the second month, on the 20th day of the month, the cloud went up. It went away from God's Tent of Meeting. 12 So the Israelites started to travel on their journey away from the Sinai desert. [ a ] Then the cloud stopped in the desert called Paran. 13 They started to travel for the first time, in the way that the Lord had told them to do, through Moses.
14 The flag of the camp of Judah's tribe, started to travel first, with all their armies. And Nahshon the son of Amminadab was over all their armies. 15 Nethanel, the son of Zuar, was over the army of the tribe of Issachar. 16 Eliab, the son of Helon, was over the army of the tribe of Zebulun. 17 Then the Levites packed God's Tent. Then Gershon's clan and Merari's clan, who were carrying God's Tent, started to travel.
18 Next the flag of the camp of Reuben started to travel, with all their armies. Elizur, the son of Shedeur, was over all their armies. 19 Shelumiel, the son of Zurishaddai, was over the army of the tribe of Simeon. 20 Eliasaph, the son of Deuel, was over the army of the tribe of Gad. 21 Then Kohath's clan started to travel. They were carrying the holy things. Before they arrived at the new camp, the other Levites would put up God's Tent.
22 Next the flag of the camp of the tribe of Ephraim started to travel, with all their armies. Elishama the son of Ammihud was over all their armies. 23 And Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur was over the army of the tribe of Manasseh. 24 And Abidan the son of Gideoni was over the army of the tribe of Benjamin.
25 Then the flag of the camp of the tribe of Dan started to travel last, with all their armies. They could keep the Israelites safe if an enemy attacked them from behind them. Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai was over all their armies. 26 And Pagiel the son of Ocran was over the army of the tribe of Asher. 27 And Ahira the son of Enan was over the army of the tribe of Naphtali. 28 The Israelites marched out like that every time that they started to travel.
29 Moses spoke to Reuel's son, Hobab. He was the brother of Moses' wife. He was a Midianite. Moses said to Hobab, ‘We are leaving here now to go to another place. The Lord has said to us, “I will give that place to you.” The Lord has promised to help Israel's people with good things. So come with us and we will take care of you.’
30 But Hobab said to him, ‘I will not come. Instead, I will return to my own country and to my family there.’
31 Moses said, ‘Please do not leave us. You know good places for us to put up our tents in the desert. So you can be our guide. 32 And if you come with us, we will share with you the good things that the Lord gives to us.’
33 So the Israelites left the Lord 's mountain. They travelled for three days. During that time, the Levites carried the Lord 's Covenant Box in front of them. That was so that the Lord could show them where to make their camp. 34 And the Lord 's cloud was over them during the day, whenever they started to travel from the camp.
35 Each time that the Covenant Box started to travel Moses said, ‘Be ready, Lord ! Cause your enemies to run away in every direction!’ 36 When they stopped travelling, Moses said, ‘Return, Lord , to be near to the thousands of Israel's people.’
10 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Make two trumpets. Use silver and hammer it to make the trumpets. These trumpets will be for calling the people together and for telling them when it is time to move the camp. 3 If you blow long blasts on both trumpets, all the people must meet together at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. 4 But if you blow long blasts on only one trumpet, only the leaders will come to meet with you. (These are the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel.)
5 “Short blasts on the trumpets will be the way to tell the people to move the camp. The first time you blow a short blast on the trumpets, the tribes camping on the east side of the Meeting Tent must begin to move. 6 The second time you blow a short blast on the trumpets, the tribes camping on the south side of the Meeting Tent will begin to move. 7 But if you want to gather the people together for a special meeting, blow the trumpets in a different way—blow a long steady blast on the trumpets. 8 Only Aaron’s sons, the priests, should blow the trumpets. This is a law for you that will continue forever, for generations to come.
9 “If you are fighting an enemy in your own land, blow loudly on the trumpets before you go to fight them. The Lord your God will hear you, and he will save you from your enemies. 10 Also blow these trumpets for your special meetings, New Moon celebrations, and all your happy times together. Blow the trumpets when you give your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. This will be a special way for your God to remember you. I command you to do this; I am the Lord your God.”
11 On the 20th day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites left Egypt, the cloud rose from above the Tent of the Agreement. 12 So the Israelites began their journey. They left the desert of Sinai and traveled until the cloud stopped in the desert of Paran. 13 This was the first time the people moved their camp. They moved it the way the Lord commanded Moses.
14 The three divisions from Judah’s camp went first. They traveled under their flag. The first group was the tribe of Judah. Nahshon son of Amminadab was the commander of that group. 15 Next came the tribe of Issachar. Nethanel son of Zuar was the commander of that group. 16 And then came the tribe of Zebulun. Eliab son of Helon was the commander of that group.
17 Then the Holy Tent was taken down. And the men from the Gershon and the Merari families carried the Holy Tent. So the people from these families were next in line.
18 Then came the three divisions from Reuben’s camp. They traveled under their flag. The first group was the tribe of Reuben. Elizur son of Shedeur was the commander of that group. 19 Next came the tribe of Simeon. Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was the commander of that group. 20 And then came the tribe of Gad. Eliasaph son of Deuel [ a ] was the commander of that group. 21 Then came the Kohath family. They carried the holy things from inside the Holy Tent. These people came at this time so that the other people could set up the Holy Tent and make it ready at the new camp before these people arrived.
22 Next came the three groups from Ephraim’s camp. They traveled under their flag. The first group was the tribe of Ephraim. Elishama son of Ammihud was the commander of that group. 23 Next came the tribe of Manasseh. Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was the commander of that group. 24 Then came the tribe of Benjamin. Abidan son of Gideoni was the commander of that group.
25 The last three tribes in the line were the rear guard for all the other tribes. These were the groups from Dan’s camp. They traveled under their flag. The first group was the tribe of Dan. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai was their commander. 26 Next came the tribe of Asher. Pagiel son of Ocran was the commander of that group. 27 Then came the tribe of Naphtali. Ahira son of Enan was the commander of that group. 28 That was the way the Israelites marched when they moved from place to place.
29 Hobab was the son of Reuel, the Midianite. (Reuel was Moses’ father-in-law.) Moses said to Hobab, “We are traveling to the land that the Lord promised to give to us. Come with us and we will be good to you. The Lord has promised good things to the Israelites.”
30 But Hobab answered, “No, I will not go with you. I will go back to my homeland and to my own people.”
31 Then Moses said, “Please don’t leave us. You know more about the desert than we do. You can be our guide. 32 If you come with us, we will share with you all the good things that the Lord gives us.”
33 So they began traveling from the mountain of the Lord . The priests took the Box of the Lord ’s Agreement and walked in front of the people. They carried the Holy Box for three days, looking for a place to camp. 34 The Lord ’s cloud was over them every day. And when they left their camp every morning, the cloud was there to lead them.
35 When the people lifted the Holy Box to move the camp, Moses always said,
“Get up, Lord !
May your enemies be scattered.
May your enemies run away from you.”
36 And when the Holy Box was put in its place, Moses always said,
“Come back, Lord ,
to the millions of Israelites.”
10 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.
3 And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
4 And if they blow but with one trumpet, then the princes, which are heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee.
5 When ye blow an alarm, then the camps that lie on the east parts shall go forward.
6 When ye blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.
7 But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm.
8 And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations.
9 And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the Lord your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.
10 Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the Lord your God.
11 And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony.
12 And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.
13 And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
14 In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah according to their armies: and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.
15 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethaneel the son of Zuar.
16 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.
17 And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the tabernacle.
18 And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur.
19 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.
20 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.
21 And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and the other did set up the tabernacle against they came.
22 And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud.
23 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.
24 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni.
25 And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan set forward, which was the rereward of all the camps throughout their hosts: and over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
26 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ocran.
27 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.
28 Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their armies, when they set forward.
29 And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the Lord said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the Lord hath spoken good concerning Israel.
30 And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.
31 And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes.
32 And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the Lord shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.
33 And they departed from the mount of the Lord three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.
34 And the cloud of the Lord was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp.
35 And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, Lord , and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee.
36 And when it rested, he said, Return, O Lord , unto the many thousands of Israel.
10 The Lord spoke further to Moses, saying, 2 “Make yourself two trumpets of silver, you shall make them of hammered work; and you shall use them for ( A ) summoning the congregation and breaking camp. 3 Now ( B ) when both are blown, all the congregation shall meet you at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 4 But if only one is blown, then the ( C ) leaders, the heads of the [ a ] divisions of Israel, shall meet you. 5 And when you blow an alarm, the camps that are pitched ( D ) on the east side shall set out. 6 Then when you sound an alarm the second time, the camps that are pitched on ( E ) the south side shall set out; an alarm is to be sounded for them to break camp. 7 When convening the assembly, however, you shall blow the trumpets without ( F ) sounding an alarm. 8 ( G ) The sons of Aaron, moreover, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and this shall be a permanent statute for you throughout your generations. 9 And when you go to war in your land against the enemy who ( H ) attacks you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, so that you will be ( I ) thought of by the Lord your God, and be saved from your enemies. 10 Also on the day of your joy and at your appointed [ b ] feasts, and on the first days of your months, ( J ) you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. I am the Lord your God.”
11 Now in ( K ) the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, the cloud was lifted from above the [ c ] tabernacle of the testimony; 12 and the sons of Israel set out on ( L ) their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai. Then the cloud settled in the ( M ) wilderness of Paran. 13 ( N ) So they moved on for the first time in accordance with the [ d ] command of the Lord through Moses. 14 The [ e ] flag of the camp of the sons of Judah, by their armies, ( O ) set out first, with Nahshon the son of Amminadab, over its army, 15 and Nethanel the son of Zuar, over the tribal army of the sons of Issachar; 16 and Eliab the son of Helon over the tribal army of the sons of Zebulun.
17 ( P ) Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who were carrying the tabernacle, set out. 18 Next ( Q ) the flag of the camp of Reuben, by their armies, set out with Elizur the son of Shedeur, over its army, 19 and Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai over the tribal army of the sons of Simeon, 20 and Eliasaph the son of Deuel was over the tribal army of the sons of Gad.
21 ( R ) Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy objects ; and ( S ) the tabernacle was set up before their arrival. 22 ( T ) Next the flag of the camp of the sons of Ephraim, by their armies, set out, with Elishama the son of Ammihud over its army, 23 and Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur over the tribal army of the sons of Manasseh; 24 and Abidan the son of Gideoni over the tribal army of the sons of Benjamin.
25 ( U ) Then the flag of the camp of the sons of Dan, by their armies, which formed the ( V ) rear guard for all the camps, set out, with Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai over its army, 26 and Pagiel the son of Ochran over the tribal army of the sons of Asher; 27 and Ahira the son of Enan over the tribal army of the sons of Naphtali. 28 [ f ] This was the order of marching for the sons of Israel by their armies as they set out.
29 Then Moses said to ( W ) Hobab the son of ( X ) Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out to the place of which the Lord said, ‘ ( Y ) I will give it to you.’ ( Z ) Come with us and we will do you good, for the Lord ( AA ) has [ g ] promised good concerning Israel.” 30 But he said to him, “ ( AB ) I will not come, but rather will go to my own land and relatives.” 31 Then he said, “Please do not leave us, since you know [ h ] where we should camp in the wilderness, and you ( AC ) will be as eyes for us. 32 So it will be, if you go with us, that [ i ] ( AD ) whatever good the Lord [ j ] does for us, ( AE ) we will [ k ] do for you.”
33 ( AF ) So they moved on from the mountain of the Lord three days’ journey, with ( AG ) the ark of the covenant of the Lord going on in front of them for the [ l ] three days, to seek out ( AH ) a resting place for them. 34 ( AI ) And the cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.
35 Then it came about when the ark set out that Moses said,
“ ( AJ ) Rise up, Lord !
And may Your enemies be scattered,
And those ( AK ) who hate You flee from Your presence.”
36 And when it came to rest, he said,
10 The Lord said to Moses: 2 “Make two trumpets ( A ) of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community ( B ) together and for having the camps set out. ( C ) 3 When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 4 If only one is sounded, the leaders ( D ) —the heads of the clans of Israel—are to assemble before you. 5 When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east are to set out. ( E ) 6 At the sounding of a second blast, the camps on the south are to set out. ( F ) The blast will be the signal for setting out. 7 To gather the assembly, blow the trumpets, ( G ) but not with the signal for setting out. ( H )
8 “The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come. ( I ) 9 When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you, ( J ) sound a blast on the trumpets. ( K ) Then you will be remembered ( L ) by the Lord your God and rescued from your enemies. ( M ) 10 Also at your times of rejoicing—your appointed festivals and New Moon feasts ( N ) —you are to sound the trumpets ( O ) over your burnt offerings ( P ) and fellowship offerings, ( Q ) and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the Lord your God. ( R ) ”
11 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, ( S ) the cloud lifted ( T ) from above the tabernacle of the covenant law. ( U ) 12 Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran. ( V ) 13 They set out, this first time, at the Lord ’s command through Moses. ( W )
14 The divisions of the camp of Judah went first, under their standard. ( X ) Nahshon son of Amminadab ( Y ) was in command. 15 Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe ( Z ) of Issachar, ( AA ) 16 and Eliab son of Helon ( AB ) was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun. ( AC ) 17 Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out. ( AD )
18 The divisions of the camp of Reuben ( AE ) went next, under their standard. ( AF ) Elizur son of Shedeur ( AG ) was in command. 19 Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the tribe of Simeon, ( AH ) 20 and Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad. ( AI ) 21 Then the Kohathites ( AJ ) set out, carrying the holy things. ( AK ) The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived. ( AL )
22 The divisions of the camp of Ephraim ( AM ) went next, under their standard. Elishama son of Ammihud ( AN ) was in command. 23 Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh, ( AO ) 24 and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin. ( AP )
25 Finally, as the rear guard ( AQ ) for all the units, the divisions of the camp of Dan set out under their standard. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai ( AR ) was in command. 26 Pagiel son of Okran was over the division of the tribe of Asher, ( AS ) 27 and Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali. ( AT ) 28 This was the order of march for the Israelite divisions as they set out.
29 Now Moses said to Hobab ( AU ) son of Reuel ( AV ) the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, ( AW ) “We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’ ( AX ) Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”
30 He answered, “No, I will not go; ( AY ) I am going back to my own land and my own people. ( AZ ) ”
31 But Moses said, “Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes. ( BA ) 32 If you come with us, we will share with you ( BB ) whatever good things the Lord gives us. ( BC ) ”
33 So they set out ( BD ) from the mountain of the Lord and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the Lord ( BE ) went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest. ( BF ) 34 The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp. ( BG )
35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses said,
“Rise up, ( BH ) Lord !
May your enemies be scattered; ( BI )
may your foes flee before you. ( BJ ) ” ( BK )
36 Whenever it came to rest, he said,
