The Jewish leaders want to kill Jesus

14 It was now two days before the Passover festival. It was the time when Jews eat flat bread which has no yeast in it. [ a ] The leaders of the priests and the teachers of God's Law wanted to kill Jesus. But they wanted to take hold of him secretly. So they tried to decide how they could do that. 2 They said to each other, ‘We do not want to do it during the festival. If we do that, the people will be angry. Then they may fight against us.’

A woman pours special oil on Jesus' head

3 Then Jesus went to Bethany, and he visited Simon at his house. At one time, Simon had had a bad disease of the skin. While Jesus was eating a meal there, a woman came into the house. She brought a small stone jar that contained expensive oil with a very nice smell. They used nard to make it. The woman broke the jar to open it. Then she poured the oil over Jesus' head. [ b ]

4 But some people became angry. They said to each other, ‘This woman should not have wasted the oil. 5 She could have sold it and she could have given the money to poor people. She could have sold it for more than 300 coins. A man would have to work for a year to get that much money.’ So they spoke angrily to the woman.

6 But Jesus said, ‘Do not speak to her like that! Do not cause trouble for her. She has done a good thing to me. 7 You will always have poor people with you. You can help them at any time that you want. But you will not always have me with you. 8 This woman did what she was able to do. She poured oil over my body. So now, my body will be ready for people to bury me. 9 I tell you this: Everywhere in the world, people will speak about God's good news. At the same time, they will also tell people about the good thing that this woman has done. And so they will remember her.’

Judas agrees to help the leaders of the priests

10 Then Judas Iscariot went to the leaders of the priests. He said that he would help them to catch Jesus. (Judas was one of Jesus' 12 apostles.) 11 The leaders of the priests were very happy about this. They promised to give Judas some money. Then Judas waited for the right moment to help them to take hold of Jesus.

Jesus eats his last meal with his 12 apostles

12 The first day of the festival when the Jews eat flat bread arrived. On this day, each family kills a young sheep for the Passover meal. Jesus' disciples said to him, ‘We will go to prepare the Passover meal for you. Where do you want us to do that?’

13 So Jesus sent two disciples to prepare the meal. ‘Go into the city,’ he said to them. ‘A man, who is carrying a jar of water, will meet you. Follow him. 14 He will go to a house. You must say to the master of that house, “The Teacher sends this message to you: ‘Where is the room for visitors? I will eat the Passover meal there with my disciples.’ ” 15 Then the man will show you a large room upstairs. The room will have in it all the things that you will need. You should prepare the Passover meal for us there.’

16 Then the two disciples left and they went into the city. They found everything as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal there.

17 When it was evening, Jesus arrived with the 12 apostles. 18 While they were eating the meal, Jesus said, ‘I tell you this: One of you will help the Jewish leaders to take hold of me. It is someone who is eating this meal with me.’

19 The disciples became very sad. Each one of them said to Jesus, ‘Surely you do not mean me, do you?’

20 Jesus said to them, ‘It is one of you 12 apostles. That man is eating from the same dish as I am. [ c ] 21 The Son of Man must die in the way that the Bible says. But it will be very bad for the man who gives me to my enemies. It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.’

The Passover meal

22 While Jesus and his disciples were eating, he took a loaf of bread. He thanked God for it. Then he broke the bread into pieces. He gave some of it to each of his disciples. ‘Take this bread and eat it,’ he said to them. ‘This is my body.’

23 Then Jesus took a cup. He thanked God for the wine in the cup. Then he gave the cup to them and they all drank from it.

24 Jesus said to them, ‘This is my blood that shows God's promise. When I die, my blood will pour out of my body. In that way God will save many people. That is the promise that God makes because of my death. 25 I tell you this: I will not drink wine again until God rules in his kingdom. Then it will be new wine.’

26 Then Jesus and his disciples sang a song to praise God. Then they went out to the Mount of Olives. [ d ]

Jesus tells the disciples what will happen

27 Then Jesus said to the disciples, ‘All of you will turn away from me. It will happen as the Bible says:

God says, “I will kill the shepherd who leads the sheep.
Then the sheep will run away in different directions.” ’ [ e ]

28 Jesus then said, ‘But after that happens, I will become alive again. Then I will go to Galilee, and you will meet me there.’

29 Peter said to Jesus, ‘Even if everyone else runs away, I will not leave you.’

30 Jesus replied, ‘I tell you this: Even tonight, you will say that you do not know me. You will say that three times before the cockerel sings for the second time in the morning.’

31 But Peter said very strongly, ‘I will die with you if I need to. But I will never say that I do not know you.’ All the other disciples said the same thing.

Jesus prays in the garden called Gethsemane

32 Then they arrived at a garden called Gethsemane. Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ 33 Jesus took Peter, James and John with him. He started to feel very sad and upset. 34 He said to them, ‘I am very sad. I feel as if I could die because I feel so sad. Wait here and stay awake.’

35 Jesus went a short way beyond them. He went down on the ground. He prayed that, if possible, God would save him from this time of trouble. 36 He said, ‘Abba, my Father, you can do all things. Please take this great pain away from me. But I do not ask you to do what I want. Do what you want to do.’

37 Jesus returned to his three disciples. Now they were sleeping. He said to Peter, ‘Simon, you are asleep! You could not stay awake for even one hour! 38 You must keep awake and you must pray. Then you will not want to do something wrong. You really want to do the right thing, but your body is weak.’

39 Jesus went away again and he prayed in the same words. 40 Then Jesus returned again to Peter, James and John. He saw that they were sleeping. They could not keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Then Jesus returned a third time to the disciples. He said to them, ‘You should not still be sleeping and resting. That is enough! The moment has arrived. Look! Someone will now give me, the Son of Man, to my enemies. 42 Stand up, we will go now. Look! The man who will give me to my enemies is here.’

Judas leads the men who will take Jesus away

43 Jesus was still speaking when, immediately, Judas arrived. He was one of Jesus' 12 apostles. A crowd came with him. They were carrying swords and heavy sticks. The leaders of the priests, the teachers of God's Law and the important Jews had sent these men.

44 Before this, Judas had told these men, ‘I will kiss one of the men. You must take hold of that man. Lead him away and do not let him go.’ 45 When they arrived, Judas went immediately to Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said to Jesus. Then he kissed Jesus in a friendly way. 46 So the men took hold of Jesus to lead him away. 47 But a certain man who was standing there took hold of his sword. He hit the servant of the leader of the priests with it and he cut off the servant's ear.

48 Then Jesus spoke to the crowd. He said, ‘You have come out here with swords and heavy sticks to take hold of me. Do you really think that I am leading people to fight against our country's rulers? 49 No! I was with you every day when I was teaching people in the yard of the temple. You did not try to take hold of me then. But this must happen in the way that the Bible says it would happen.’ 50 Then all Jesus' disciples left him and they ran away.

51 A certain young man was following Jesus. [ f ] He was wearing only one piece of linen cloth to cover himself. The men tried to take hold of this young man. 52 But the young man left the piece of cloth behind and he ran away. So when he ran away, he was not wearing anything.

The most important priest asks Jesus questions

53 The men took Jesus to the house of the most important priest. All the leaders of the priests met together there with the important Jews and with the teachers of God's Law. [ g ]

54 Peter followed Jesus into the yard of Caiaphas's house. But he did not go near Jesus. He sat down in the yard with the guards and he made himself warm by the fire.

55 The leaders of the priests and all the Jewish leaders wanted to punish Jesus with death. So they tried to find some people who would say things against Jesus. But they did not find anyone who could help them. 56 Many people said things against Jesus that were not true. But they did not agree with each other in what they said. [ h ]

57 Then some men stood up and they said something false against Jesus. 58 They said, ‘We heard Jesus say, “I will destroy the temple, which men have built. In three days I will build another House for God. It will not be people who build this new house.” ’ 59 Even then, these people who were speaking against Jesus did not say the same thing.

60 Then Caiaphas stood up in front of everyone. He said to Jesus, ‘You must reply now to what these men have said against you. Are the things that they are saying true?’ 61 But Jesus did not reply. He did not say anything.

So again, Caiaphas asked Jesus, ‘Are you the Messiah? Are you the Son of God?’

62 ‘I am,’ Jesus replied. ‘And you will all see the Son of Man. He will be sitting in the most important place at the right side of the Most Powerful God. You will see him coming to earth. He will be riding on the clouds in the sky.’

63 Then Caiaphas tore his clothes to show that he was angry. [ i ] ‘We do not need anyone else to speak against Jesus,’ he said. 64 ‘You have heard the bad words that he has spoken against God. Do you think that he is guilty?’

Everyone agreed that Jesus deserved to die.

65 Then some of the men began to spit on Jesus. They covered his eyes with a cloth and they hit him many times with their fists. They said, ‘Show us that you are a prophet! Tell us who hit you!’ Then the guards took hold of Jesus and they beat him.

Peter says three times that he does not know Jesus

66 Peter was still sitting outside in the yard. One of the young women who was a servant of the most important priest came there. 67 She saw Peter, who was making himself warm by the fire.

She looked at him and she said, ‘You also were a friend of Jesus, the man from Nazareth.’

68 Peter replied, ‘That is not true! I do not even know what you are talking about!’ Then Peter went out to the gate of the yard. At that moment a cockerel sang.

69 The young woman watched him, and again she said to the other people there, ‘He is one of the men who were friends of Jesus.’ 70 But Peter again said that it was not true.

After a little time, the other people who were standing there said to Peter, ‘We know you are from Galilee. [ j ] So we are sure that you are one of those men.’

71 Then Peter began to speak very strongly to them. He said, ‘I do not know this man that you are talking about. God will surely punish me if this is not true!’ 72 Immediately a cockerel sang loudly for a second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him: ‘You will say three times that you do not know me. You will do it before the cockerel sings for the second time.’

When Peter thought about this, he wept very much.

  1. 14:1 ‘flat bread’ is bread which has no yeast in it.
  2. 14:3 Nard is a plant that people use to make expensive oil. The plant grows in the country called India. People kept the oil in a special stone jar. The woman had to break the jar so that she could pour out the oil.
  3. 14:20 There was a dish on the table with some food in it. They were all putting their bread into the same dish to pick up the food.
  4. 14:26 Judas was not still with the other disciples. He left earlier. See John 13:29-30 .
  5. 14:27 See Zechariah 13:7 .
  6. 14:51 We think that this young man was called Mark. Mark wrote this book.
  7. 14:53 The most important priest was called Caiaphas. When all these important Jews met together, they were called the Sanhedrin. They decided together about how to rule the people. There were 71 men in the Sanhedrin. They had a lot of power, but they could not punish a guilty person with death. Only the Roman rulers could do that.
  8. 14:56 In Jewish rules, two or more people had to say the same thing about a person. Then the judge would believe that their words were true. He would agree that the person had done something wrong.
  9. 14:63 Caiaphas tore his own clothes to show other people that he was very angry.
  10. 14:70 They knew that he was from Galilee. They knew it because of the way that he spoke. See Matthew 26:73 .

The Jewish Leaders Plan to Kill Jesus ( A )

14 It was now only two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and teachers of the law were trying to find a way to arrest Jesus without the people seeing it. Then they could kill him. 2 They said, “But we cannot arrest Jesus during the festival. We don’t want the people to be angry and cause a riot.”

A Woman Does Something Special ( B )

3 Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper. While he was eating there, a woman came to him. She had an alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume made of pure nard. She opened the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.

4 Some of the followers there saw this. They were upset and complained to each other. They said, “Why waste that perfume? 5 It was worth a full year’s pay. [ a ] It could have been sold and the money given to those who are poor.” And they told the woman what a bad thing she had done.

6 Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you giving her such trouble? She did a very good thing for me. 7 You will always have the poor with you, [ b ] and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8 This woman did the only thing she could do for me. She poured perfume on my body before I die to prepare it for burial. 9 The Good News will be told to people all over the world. And I can assure you that everywhere the Good News is told, the story of what this woman did will also be told, and people will remember her.”

Judas Agrees to Help Jesus’ Enemies ( C )

10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles, went to talk to the leading priests about handing Jesus over to them. 11 They were very happy about this, and they promised to pay him. So he waited for the best time to hand Jesus over to them.

The Passover Meal ( D )

12 It was now the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread—the day the lambs were killed for the Passover. Jesus’ followers came to him and said, “We will go and prepare everything for you to eat the Passover meal. Where do you want us to have the meal?”

13 Jesus sent two of his followers into the city. He said to them, “Go into the city. You will see a man carrying a jar of water. He will come to you. Follow him. 14 He will go into a house. Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks that you show us the room where he and his followers can eat the Passover meal.’ 15 The owner will show you a large room upstairs that is ready for us. Prepare the meal for us there.”

16 So the followers left and went into the city. Everything happened the way Jesus said. So the followers prepared the Passover meal.

17 In the evening Jesus went to that house with the twelve apostles. 18 While they were all at the table eating, he said, “Believe me when I say that one of you will hand me over to my enemies—one of you eating with me now.”

19 The followers were very sad to hear this. Each one said to Jesus, “Surely I am not the one!”

20 Jesus answered, “It is one of you twelve—the one who is dipping his bread in the same bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man will suffer what the Scriptures say will happen to him. But it will be very bad for the one who hands over the Son of Man to be killed. It would be better for him if he had never been born.”

The Lord’s Supper ( E )

22 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread and thanked God for it. He broke off some pieces, gave them to his followers and said, “Take and eat this bread. It is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup of wine, thanked God for it, and gave it to them. They all drank from the cup. 24 Then he said, “This wine is my blood, which will be poured out for many to begin the new agreement from God to his people. 25 I want you to know, I will not drink this wine again until that day when I drink it in God’s kingdom and the wine is new.”

26 They all sang a song and then went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Says His Followers Will Leave Him ( F )

27 Then Jesus told the followers, “You will all lose your faith. The Scriptures say,

‘I will kill the shepherd,
and the sheep will run away.’ ( G )

28 But after I am killed, I will rise from death. Then I will go to Galilee. I will be there before you come.”

29 Peter said, “All the other followers may lose their faith. But my faith will never be shaken.”

30 Jesus answered, “The truth is, tonight you will say you don’t know me. You will say it three times before the rooster crows twice.”

31 But Peter strongly protested, “I will never say I don’t know you! I will even die with you!” And all the other followers said the same thing.

Jesus Prays Alone ( H )

32 Jesus and his followers went to a place named Gethsemane. He said to them, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 But he told Peter, James, and John to come with him. He began to be very distressed and troubled, 34 and he said to them, “My heart is so heavy with grief, I feel as if I am dying. Wait here and stay awake.”

35 Jesus went on a little farther away from them, fell to the ground, and prayed. He asked that, if possible, he would not have this time of suffering. 36 He said, “ Abba , [ c ] Father! You can do all things. Don’t make me drink from this cup. [ d ] But do what you want, not what I want.”

37 Then he went back to his followers and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, why are you sleeping? Could you not stay awake with me for one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray for strength against temptation. Your spirit wants to do what is right, but your body is weak.”

39 Again Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40 Then he went back to the followers and again found them sleeping. They could not stay awake. They did not know what they should say to him.

41 After Jesus prayed a third time, he went back to his followers. He said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That’s enough! The time has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to the control of sinful men. 42 Stand up! We must go. Here comes the man who is handing me over to them.”

Jesus Is Arrested ( I )

43 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve apostles, came there. He had a big crowd of people with him, all carrying swords and clubs. They had been sent from the leading priests, the teachers of the law, and the older Jewish leaders.

44 Judas [ e ] planned to do something to show them which one was Jesus. He said, “The one I kiss will be Jesus. Arrest him and guard him while you lead him away.” 45 So Judas went over to Jesus and said, “Teacher!” Then he kissed him. 46 The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47 One of the followers standing near Jesus grabbed his sword and pulled it out. He swung it at the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.

48 Then Jesus said, “Why do you come to get me with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? 49 Every day I was with you teaching in the Temple area. You did not arrest me there. But all these things have happened to show the full meaning of what the Scriptures said.” 50 Then all of Jesus’ followers left him and ran away.

51 One of those following Jesus was a young man wearing only a linen cloth. When the people tried to grab him, 52 he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.

Jesus Before the Jewish Leaders ( J )

53 Those who arrested Jesus led him to the house of the high priest. All the leading priests, the older Jewish leaders, and the teachers of the law were gathered there. 54 Peter followed Jesus but stayed back at a distance. He followed him to the yard of the high priest’s house. He went into the yard and sat there with the guards, warming himself by their fire.

55 The leading priests and the whole high council tried to find something that Jesus had done wrong so they could kill him. But the council could find no proof that would allow them to kill Jesus. 56 Many people came and told lies against Jesus, but they all said different things. None of them agreed.

57 Then some others stood up and told more lies against Jesus. They said, 58 “We heard this man [ f ] say, ‘I will destroy this Temple built by human hands. And three days later, I will build another Temple not made by human hands.’” 59 But also what these people said did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before everyone and said to Jesus, “These people said things against you. Do you have something to say about their charges? Are they telling the truth?” 61 But Jesus said nothing to answer him.

The high priest asked Jesus another question: “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the blessed God?”

62 Jesus answered, “Yes, I am the Son of God. And in the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right side of God All-Powerful. And you will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.”

63 When the high priest heard this, he tore his clothes in anger. He said, “We don’t need any more witnesses! 64 You all heard these insults to God. What do you think?”

Everyone agreed that Jesus was guilty and must be killed. 65 Some of the people there spit at him. They covered his eyes and hit him with their fists. They said, “Be a prophet [ g ] and tell us who hit you!” Then the guards led Jesus away and beat him.

Peter Is Afraid to Say He Knows Jesus ( K )

66 While Peter was still in the yard, a servant girl of the high priest came there. 67 She saw him warming himself by the fire. She looked closely at him and said, “You were with Jesus, that man from Nazareth.”

68 But Peter said this was not true. “That makes no sense,” he said. “I don’t know what you are talking about!” Then he left and went to the entrance of the yard, and a rooster crowed. [ h ]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she began saying again to the people standing around, “This man is one of them.” 70 Again Peter said it was not true.

A short time later, the people standing there said, “We know you are one of them, because you are from Galilee.”

71 Then Peter began to curse. He said, “I swear to God, I don’t know this man you are talking about!”

72 As soon as Peter said this, the rooster crowed the second time. Then he remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Then Peter began to cry.

14 After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.

2 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.

3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.

4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?

5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

6 And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.

7 For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.

8 She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.

9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

10 And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.

11 And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

12 And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?

13 And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.

14 And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

15 And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.

16 And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

17 And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.

18 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.

19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?

20 And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.

21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.

22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.

23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

26 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

27 And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.

28 But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.

29 But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

30 And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

31 But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.

32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.

33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;

34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.

35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?

38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

39 And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.

40 And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.

41 And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42 Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

43 And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

44 And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.

45 And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.

46 And they laid their hands on him, and took him.

47 And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me?

49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.

50 And they all forsook him, and fled.

51 And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:

52 And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

54 And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.

55 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.

56 For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.

57 And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,

58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.

59 But neither so did their witness agree together.

60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?

64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.

66 And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:

67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.

68 But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.

69 And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.

70 And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.

71 But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.

72 And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.

Death Plot and Anointing

14 ( A ) Now ( B ) the Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes ( C ) were seeking how to arrest Him covertly and kill Him ; 2 for they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise there will be a riot of the people.”

3 ( D ) While He was in ( E ) Bethany at the home of Simon [ a ] the Leper, He was reclining at the table , and a woman came with an alabaster vial of very ( F ) expensive perfume of pure [ b ] nard. She broke the vial and poured the perfume over His head. 4 But there were some indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted? 5 For this perfume could have been sold for over three hundred [ c ] denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her. 6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good deed for Me. 7 For you always have ( G ) the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me. 8 She has done what she could; ( H ) she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial. 9 Truly I say to you, ( I ) wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

10 ( J ) Then Judas Iscariot, ( K ) who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to [ d ] betray Him to them. 11 They were delighted when they heard this , and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.

The Last Passover

12 ( L ) On the first day of [ e ] ( M ) Unleavened Bread, when [ f ] the Passover lamb was being ( N ) sacrificed, His disciples *said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 13 And He *sent two of His disciples and *said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him; 14 and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My ( O ) guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 And he himself will show you a large upstairs room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.” 16 The disciples left and came to the city, and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

17 ( P ) When it was evening He *came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will [ g ] betray Me— [ h ] one who is eating with Me.” 19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20 But He said to them, “ It is one of the twelve, the one who dips bread with Me in the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man is going away just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man [ i ] by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good [ j ] for that man if he had not been born.”

The Lord’s Supper

22 ( Q ) While they were eating, He took some bread, and [ k ] after a ( R ) blessing He broke it , and gave it to them, and said, “Take it ; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My ( S ) blood of the ( T ) covenant, which is being poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine again, until that day when I drink it, new, in the kingdom of God.”

26 ( U ) And after singing a [ l ] hymn, they went out to ( V ) the Mount of Olives.

27 ( W ) And Jesus *said to them, “You will all [ m ] fall away, because it is written: ‘ ( X ) I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered .’ 28 But after I am raised, ( Y ) I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 But Peter said to Him, “Even if they all [ n ] fall away, yet I will not!” 30 And Jesus *said to him, “Truly I say to you, that [ o ] ( Z ) this very night, before ( AA ) a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.” 31 But [ p ] Peter repeatedly said insistently, “ Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing as well.

Jesus in Gethsemane

32 ( AB ) They *came to a place named [ q ] Gethsemane; and He *said to His disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.” 33 And He *took with Him Peter, [ r ] James, and John, and began to be very ( AC ) distressed and troubled. 34 And He *said to them, “ ( AD ) My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and [ s ] keep watch.” 35 And He went a little beyond them , and fell to the ground and began praying that if it were possible, ( AE ) the hour might [ t ] pass Him by. 36 And He was saying, “ ( AF ) Abba! [ u ] Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; ( AG ) yet not what I will, but what You will .” 37 And He *came and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not [ v ] keep watch for one hour? 38 [ w ] ( AH ) Keep watching and praying, so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again He went away and prayed, saying the same [ x ] words. 40 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say in reply to Him. 41 And He *came the third time, and *said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough. ( AI ) The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being [ y ] betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”

Betrayal and Arrest

43 ( AJ ) And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up, [ z ] accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who were from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him and lead Him away [ aa ] under guard.” 45 And after coming, Judas immediately went to Him and *said, “ ( AK ) Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 And they laid hands on Him and arrested Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and [ ab ] cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 49 Every day I was with you ( AL ) within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me; but this has taken place so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled.” 50 And [ ac ] His disciples all left Him and fled.

51 A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body ; and they *seized him. 52 But he [ ad ] pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

Jesus before His Accusers

53 ( AM ) They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes *gathered together. 54 And Peter had followed Him at a distance, ( AN ) right into ( AO ) the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the [ ae ] officers and ( AP ) warming himself at the [ af ] fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the entire [ ag ] ( AQ ) Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56 For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent. 57 And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘ ( AR ) I will destroy this [ ah ] temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.’” 59 And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. 60 And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?” 61 ( AS ) But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. ( AT ) Again the high priest was questioning Him, and *said to Him, “Are You the [ ai ] Christ, the Son of [ aj ] the Blessed One ?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see ( AU ) the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and ( AV ) coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 ( AW ) Tearing his clothes, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the ( AX ) blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death. 65 And some began to ( AY ) spit on Him, and [ ak ] ( AZ ) to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him, “ ( BA ) Prophesy!” Then the officers took custody of Him [ al ] and slapped Him in the face .

Peter’s Denials

66 ( BB ) And while Peter was below in ( BC ) the courtyard, one of the slave women of the high priest *came, 67 and seeing Peter ( BD ) warming himself, she looked at him and *said, “You were with Jesus the ( BE ) Nazarene as well.” 68 But he denied it , saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he ( BF ) went out onto the [ am ] porch. [ an ] 69 The slave woman saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them!” 70 But again ( BG ) he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “You really are one of them, ( BH ) for you are a Galilean as well.” 71 But he began to [ ao ] curse himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak!” 72 And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before ( BI ) a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And [ ap ] he hurried on and began to weep.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany ( A ) ( B ) ( C )

14 Now the Passover ( D ) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. ( E ) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

3 While he was in Bethany, ( F ) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. ( G )

4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages [ a ] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you, [ b ] and you can help them any time you want. ( H ) But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. ( I ) 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, ( J ) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, ( K ) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. ( L ) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

The Last Supper ( M ) ( N )

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, ( O ) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, ( P ) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. ( Q ) 21 The Son of Man ( R ) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it ( S ) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. ( T )

24 “This is my blood of the [ c ] covenant, ( U ) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” ( V )

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. ( W )

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial ( X )

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’ [ d ] ( Y )

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” ( Z )

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice [ e ] you yourself will disown me three times.” ( AA )

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, ( AB ) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Gethsemane ( AC )

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John ( AD ) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” ( AE ) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour ( AF ) might pass from him. 36 “Abba , [ f ] Father,” ( AG ) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup ( AH ) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” ( AI )

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. ( AJ ) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ( AK )

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour ( AL ) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested ( AM )

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, ( AN ) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” ( AO ) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, ( AP ) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” ( AQ ) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled. ( AR )

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin ( AS ) ( AT )

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. ( AU ) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. ( AV )

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin ( AW ) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, ( AX ) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. ( AY )

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” ( AZ )

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” ( BA )

63 The high priest tore his clothes. ( BB ) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death. ( BC ) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him. ( BD )

Peter Disowns Jesus ( BE )

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, ( BF ) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, ( BG ) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” ( BH ) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” ( BI ) he said, and went out into the entryway. [ g ]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it. ( BJ )

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” ( BK )

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.” ( BL )

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. [ h ] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice [ i ] you will disown me three times.” ( BM ) And he broke down and wept.
