Jesus sends out the 12 apostles

9 Jesus asked his 12 apostles to come to him. He gave them power and authority. They could make sick people well. They could also send bad spirits out of people. 2 Then he sent them out to tell people about the kingdom of God. He told them that they should also make sick people well again. 3 He said to them, ‘Do not take anything for your journey. Do not take a stick, or a bag, or food. Do not take any money. Do not take extra clothes. [ a ] 4 In each town, continue to stay at the first house that you go into. Stay there until you leave that town. 5 In some towns, the people will not accept you. You should leave that place. Clean that town's dirt from your feet. Then it will be clear that they have done something wrong.’

6 Then the apostles started out. They went to visit all the villages. In every place they told people the good news about Jesus and they made sick people well.

A ruler hears about Jesus

7 People told the ruler, Herod, about all the things that were happening. [ b ] His mind was confused because people were saying lots of different things about Jesus. Some people were saying, ‘John the Baptist died but now he has become alive again.’ 8 Other people were saying, ‘It is Elijah that has come back.’ Some other people were saying, ‘This is one of God's prophets who lived a long time ago. Now he has become alive again.’ [ c ]

9 Herod said, ‘I sent a soldier to cut off John's head. [ d ] So who is this man? I hear many things about him.’ After that, Herod was trying to meet Jesus.

Jesus feeds 5,000 men and their families

10 The 12 apostles that Jesus had sent out returned. They told him what they had done. Then he took them away from the crowd, so that he could be alone with them. They went to a town called Bethsaida. 11 But the crowds found out about this. So they went to find Jesus. When he saw the crowds coming, he welcomed them. He taught them about the kingdom of God. Some sick people were there and he made them well again.

12 When it was nearly evening, the 12 apostles came to Jesus. ‘There are no houses in this place,’ they said. ‘Send the crowd away now. Tell them to go to the villages and farms near here. Then they can get food to eat and they can find a place to sleep.’

13 Jesus said to them, ‘You should give them some food to eat.’

But the disciples said, ‘We have only five loaves of bread and two fish. Do you want us to go and buy food for all these people?’ 14 There were about 5,000 men in the crowd.

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Tell the people that they should sit down on the ground in groups. There should be about 50 people in each group.’

15 So they did this. When the people had sat down, 16 Jesus took the five loaves of bread and the two fish. Then he looked up towards heaven and he thanked God for the food. He broke the bread into pieces. He gave the pieces of bread to the disciples, and they gave the bread to the crowd. 17 Everybody ate and they all had enough food. They were not hungry any more. Then the disciples picked up the bits of food that people had not eaten. They filled 12 baskets with all the little bits of food. [ e ]

Peter says who Jesus is

18 One day, Jesus was alone and he was praying. The disciples came to him. Jesus asked them, ‘When the crowds talk about me, who do they say that I am?’

19 They replied, ‘Some people say that you are John the Baptist. Other people say that you are Elijah. And some other people say that you are one of God's prophets from long ago. They think that this prophet has become alive again.’ [ f ]

20 ‘But what do you think?’ Jesus then asked them. ‘Who do you say that I am?’

Peter replied, ‘You are the Messiah. God has sent you.’ [ g ]

21 Jesus spoke very strongly to them. He told them that they must not tell anyone about this. [ h ]

22 Then he said, ‘The Son of Man will have to suffer in many ways. The important Jews, the leaders of the priests and the teachers of God's Law will turn against him. People will kill him, but three days later God will cause him to become alive again.’ [ i ]

23 Then Jesus said to all the people that were there, ‘A person who wants to be my disciple must not think about himself. He must decide that his own life is not important. Every day he must be like someone who carries his own cross to go and die. Then he may come with me as my disciple.

24 Whoever wants to keep his own life safe will lose it. But whoever gives his life to serve me will have true life. 25 A person may get everything in the whole world for himself. But if he loses his life, it would not be any good for him. He will have destroyed himself in the end. 26 You must not be ashamed of me and of my words. If you are, then the Son of Man will be ashamed of you. One day he will return and everyone will see his power. He will come with God's holy angels and he will have the bright glory of his Father God. He will be ashamed of you on that day, if you are ashamed of him now.’

Three disciples see how great Jesus is

27 Then Jesus said, ‘What I tell you is true. Some people who are standing here will see clearly God begin to rule in his kingdom. They will see that before they die.’

28 About eight days after Jesus had said these things, he went up a mountain to pray. He took Peter, John and James with him. 29 While Jesus was praying, his face became different to look at. [ j ] His clothes also became very white. They were shining brightly.

30 Then two men appeared and they were talking with him. They were Moses and Elijah. [ k ] 31 They were very bright to look at. They talked with Jesus about how he would soon die in Jerusalem. This was how God wanted him to leave this world.

32 While this was happening, Peter and his friends were sleeping. Then they really woke up and they saw that Jesus was very great and beautiful. They also saw the two men that were standing near to him. 33 Then the two men began to leave. So Peter said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, it is good that we are here. Please, let us build three huts. One hut will be for you. One hut will be for Moses and one hut will be for Elijah.’ But Peter did not really know what he was saying. [ l ]

34 While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared. It covered them all. When the cloud came over them, the three disciples were afraid. 35 Then a voice spoke from the cloud and it said, ‘This is my Son. He is the one that I have chosen. Listen to him.’

36 The voice stopped speaking. Then the three disciples saw that only Jesus was there with them now.

They did not tell anyone at this time about what they had seen.

Jesus makes a boy well

37 The next day Jesus came down from the mountain with the three disciples. A large crowd met him. 38 A man from the crowd shouted to him. ‘Teacher, please, I ask you to help my son. He is my only child. 39 Sometimes a bad spirit takes hold of him and then he screams. The spirit throws his body first one way then another and water comes out of his mouth. The spirit gives him a lot of pain and it does not leave him alone very much. 40 I asked your disciples to send the bad spirit out of him. But they could not do it.’

41 Jesus said, ‘You people today still do not believe in God. You have turned away from him. I have been with you for a long time and still you do not believe. It is difficult for me to be patient with you.’ Then Jesus said to the man, ‘Bring your son here.’

42 While the boy was coming, the bad spirit threw him to the ground. It threw the boy first one way and then the other. ‘Stop!’ Jesus said to it. He then made the boy well and he gave him back to his father.

43 Everybody was very surprised at what they saw. They knew that God was very powerful.

Jesus speaks again about his death

The people were still thinking with surprise about everything that Jesus was doing. Then he began to talk to his disciples. 44 He said to them, ‘Do not forget what I am telling you now. Soon they will deliver the Son of Man to powerful people to kill him.’ 45 But they did not understand what Jesus had said. Its meaning was a secret to them, so they could not understand. But they were afraid to ask Jesus, ‘What do you mean?’

Who will be the most important?

46 Then the disciples began to argue with each other. They argued about which of them was the most important. 47 Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he took a child and he made him stand there at his side. 48 Jesus said, ‘If someone accepts this child because of me, then he also accepts me. And anyone who accepts me also accepts my Father God, who sent me. The person who makes himself the least important among you is really the greatest.’ [ m ]

49 John then said, ‘Teacher, we saw a man who was speaking to people that had bad spirits in them. He was saying, “Jesus says that you must come out.” We told the man that he must not do this. We said that because he is not in our group.’

50 ‘Do not try to stop him,’ Jesus said, ‘If someone is not against you, he is working to help you.’

People in a village in Samaria do not accept Jesus

51 The time came when God would soon take Jesus up to heaven. Jesus knew this, so he began to go towards Jerusalem. 52 He arrived near a village in the country of Samaria. He sent some people into the village with a message. They went to ask for a place to stay for the night. 53 But the people in the village would not let him stay there. This was because he was going to Jerusalem. [ n ]

54 Then James and John heard about what had happened. They asked Jesus, ‘Master, do you want us to ask God to send fire down from the sky? Do you want us to kill these people?’

55 Jesus turned round. ‘No!’ he said, ‘Do not do that. That would be wrong.’ 56 Then they all went on to another village.

What it costs to obey Jesus

57 They continued on their journey. A man came and spoke to Jesus. He said, ‘I will go with you. And I will go with you everywhere that you go.’

58 Jesus replied, ‘Wild animals and birds have their own places to live. But I, the Son of Man, have no place of my own to lie down and rest.’

59 Then Jesus said to another man, ‘Come with me!’ The man replied, ‘First let me go home and bury my father. Then I will come with you.’

60 ‘No!’ Jesus said, ‘Let people who are dead themselves bury their own dead people. You should go and tell people about the kingdom of God.’ [ o ]

61 Another man said, ‘Sir, I will come with you. But please let me first go home to say “Goodbye” to my family.’

62 Jesus replied, ‘A man that ploughs a field must continue to look straight in front of him. If he looks behind him, he cannot plough well. People that look back behind them cannot work well for the kingdom of God.’

  1. 9:3 Jesus wanted those that he was sending out to trust him. The Holy Spirit would cause other people to give them what they needed.
  2. 9:7 This was Herod Antipas. See Luke 3:1 .
  3. 9:8 Elijah was a man that spoke messages from God. He lived about 850 years before Jesus was born. God took Elijah up to heaven while he was still alive. See 2 Kings 2 .
  4. 9:9 You can read about the death of John the Baptist in Mark 6 .
  5. 9:17 Only God could make five loaves of bread and two fish enough to feed 5,000 men and their families. This showed that Jesus' power came from God.
  6. 9:19 This is the same report that Herod heard in 9:7-8 .
  7. 9:20 The people were waiting for God to send the Messiah. They thought that this person would save them from the Roman government. They thought that he would be a great soldier.
  8. 9:21 Jesus knew that the people had wrong ideas about the Messiah. So he wanted to teach them how God rules in the lives of his people. He wanted to show them this by his life and death. Only then would the people understand that he really was the Messiah.
  9. 9:22 Jesus told his friends what would happen to him. This is the first time that he told them.
  10. 9:29 Matthew says in Matthew 17:2 that Jesus' face shone like the sun.
  11. 9:30 Moses was a leader of the people of God. He died about 1400 years before Jesus was born. We can read about him in the book of Exodus. Elijah was a prophet who spoke messages from God. He lived about 850 years before Jesus was born. God took Elijah up to heaven while he was still alive. See 2 Kings 2 .
  12. 9:33 Peter wanted these important men to remain on the mountain. That is why he wanted to build the huts. This would not have been the right thing to do.
  13. 9:48 Jesus' friends were thinking that a child was not important. Jesus showed them that a child is important to God. The way that they accept a child shows if they understand this. We should not think that we are more important than other people.
  14. 9:53 The people in Samaria did not like Jews to stay in their village.
  15. 9:60 The man wanted to wait until his father had died. Then he would follow Jesus. Jesus did not agree. He called people that did not obey him ‘dead’. Those people could bury someone that had died. Jesus needed people now to tell the good news about how God rules.

Jesus Sends His Apostles on a Mission ( A )

9 Jesus called his twelve apostles together. He gave them power to heal sicknesses and power to force demons out of people. 2 He sent them to tell about God’s kingdom and to heal the sick. 3 He said to them, “When you travel, don’t take a walking stick. Also, don’t carry a bag, food, or money. Take for your trip only the clothes you are wearing. 4 When you go into a house, stay there until it is time to leave. 5 If the people in the town will not welcome you, go outside the town and shake the dust off your feet as a warning to them.”

6 So the apostles went out. They traveled through all the towns. They told the Good News and healed people everywhere.

Herod Is Confused About Jesus ( B )

7 Herod the ruler heard about all these things that were happening. He was confused because some people said, “John the Baptizer has risen from death.” 8 Others said, “Elijah has come to us.” And some others said, “One of the prophets from long ago has risen from death.” 9 Herod said, “I cut off John’s head. So who is this man I hear these things about?” Herod continued trying to see Jesus.

Jesus Feeds More Than 5000 ( C )

10 When the apostles came back, they told Jesus what they had done on their trip. Then he took them away to a town called Bethsaida. There, he and his apostles could be alone together. 11 But the people learned where Jesus went and followed him. He welcomed them and talked with them about God’s kingdom. He healed the people who were sick.

12 Late in the afternoon, the twelve apostles came to Jesus and said, “No one lives in this place. Send the people away. They need to find food and places to sleep in the farms and towns around here.”

13 But Jesus said to the apostles, “You give them something to eat.”

They said, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish. Do you want us to go buy food for all these people?” There are too many! 14 (There were about 5000 men there.)

Jesus said to his followers, “Tell the people to sit in groups of about 50 people.”

15 So the followers did this and everyone sat down. 16 Then Jesus took the five loaves of bread and two fish. He looked up into the sky and thanked God for the food. Then he broke it into pieces, which he gave to the followers to give to the people. 17 They all ate until they were full. And there was a lot of food left. Twelve baskets were filled with the pieces of food that were not eaten.

Peter Says Jesus Is the Messiah ( D )

18 One time Jesus was praying alone. His followers came together there, and he asked them, “Who do the people say I am?”

19 They answered, “Some people say you are John the Baptizer. Others say you are Elijah. And some people say you are one of the prophets from long ago that has come back to life.”

20 Then Jesus said to his followers, “And who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah from God.”

21 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone.

Jesus Says He Must Die ( E )

22 Then Jesus said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the older Jewish leaders, the leading priests, and teachers of the law. And he will be killed. But after three days he will be raised from death.”

23 Jesus continued to say to all of them, “Any of you who want to be my follower must stop thinking about yourself and what you want. You must be willing to carry the cross that is given to you every day for following me. 24 Any of you who try to save the life you have will lose it. But you who give up your life for me will save it. 25 It is worth nothing for you to have the whole world if you yourself are destroyed or lost. 26 Don’t be ashamed of me and my teaching. If that happens, I [ a ] will be ashamed of you when I come with my divine greatness and that of the Father and the holy angels. 27 Believe me when I say that some of you people standing here will see God’s kingdom before you die.”

Jesus Is Seen With Moses and Elijah ( F )

28 About eight days after Jesus said these things, he took Peter, John, and James and went up on a mountain to pray. 29 While Jesus was praying, his face began to change. His clothes became shining white. 30 Then two men were there, talking with him. They were Moses and Elijah. 31 They also looked bright and glorious. They were talking with Jesus about his death that would happen in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and the others were asleep. But they woke up and saw the glory of Jesus. They also saw the two men who were standing with him. 33 When Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said, “Master, it is good that we are here. We will put three tents here—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34 While Peter was saying these things, a cloud came all around them. Peter, John, and James were afraid when the cloud covered them. 35 A voice came from the cloud and said, “This is my Son. He is the one I have chosen. Obey him.”

36 When the voice stopped, only Jesus was there. Peter, John, and James said nothing. And for a long time after that, they told no one about what they had seen.

Jesus Frees a Boy From an Evil Spirit ( G )

37 The next day, Jesus, Peter, John, and James came down from the mountain. A large group of people met Jesus. 38 A man in the group shouted to him, “Teacher, please come and look at my son. He is the only child I have. 39 An evil spirit comes into him, and then he shouts. He loses control of himself and foams at the mouth. The evil spirit continues to hurt him and almost never leaves him. 40 I begged your followers to make the evil spirit leave my son, but they could not do it.”

41 Jesus answered, “You people today have no faith. Your lives are all wrong. How long must I be with you and be patient with you?” Then Jesus said to the man, “Bring your son here.”

42 While the boy was coming, the demon threw the boy to the ground. The boy lost control of himself. But Jesus gave a strong command to the evil spirit. Then the boy was healed, and Jesus gave him back to his father. 43 All the people were amazed at the great power of God.

Jesus Talks About His Death ( H )

The people were still amazed about all the things Jesus did. He said to his followers, 44 “Don’t forget what I will tell you now: The Son of Man will soon be handed over to the control of other men.” 45 But the followers did not understand what he meant. The meaning was hidden from them so that they could not understand it. But they were afraid to ask Jesus about what he said.

Who Is the Greatest? ( I )

46 Jesus’ followers began to have an argument about which one of them was the greatest. 47 Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he took a little child and stood the child beside him. 48 Then he said to the followers, “Whoever accepts a little child like this in my name is accepting me. And anyone who accepts me is also accepting the one who sent me. The one among you who is the most humble—this is the one who is great.”

Whoever Is Not Against You Is for You ( J )

49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone using your name to force demons out of people. We told him to stop because he does not belong to our group.”

50 Jesus said to him, “Don’t stop him. Whoever is not against you is for you.”

A Samaritan Town

51 The time was coming near when Jesus would leave and go back to heaven. He decided to go to Jerusalem. 52 He sent some men ahead of him. They went into a town in Samaria to make everything ready for him. 53 But the people there would not welcome Jesus because he was going toward Jerusalem. 54 James and John, the followers of Jesus, saw this. They said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven and destroy those people?” [ b ]

55 But Jesus turned and criticized them for saying this. [ c ] 56 Then he and his followers went to another town.

Following Jesus ( K )

57 They were all traveling along the road. Someone said to Jesus, “I will follow you anywhere you go.”

58 He answered, “The foxes have holes to live in. The birds have nests. But the Son of Man has no place where he can rest his head.”

59 Jesus said to another man, “Follow me!”

But the man said, “Lord, let me go and bury my father first.”

60 But Jesus said to him, “Let the people who are dead bury their own dead. You must go and tell about God’s kingdom.”

61 Another man said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say goodbye to my family.”

62 Jesus said, “Anyone who begins to plow a field but looks back is not prepared for God’s kingdom.”

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

8 And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.

11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?

19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.

38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.

39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.

40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,

48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Ministry of the Twelve

9 ( A ) Now He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and the power to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to ( B ) proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing. 3 And He said to them, “ ( C ) Take nothing for your journey, ( D ) neither a staff, nor a [ a ] bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two [ b ] tunics. 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there [ c ] until you leave that city. 5 And as for all who do not receive you, when you leave that city, ( E ) shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And as they were leaving, they began going [ d ] throughout the villages, ( F ) preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

7 ( G ) Now ( H ) Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that ( I ) John had risen from the dead, 8 and by some that ( J ) Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9 Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And ( K ) he kept trying to see Him.

10 ( L ) When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. ( M ) And taking them with Him, He withdrew privately to a city called ( N ) Bethsaida. 11 But the crowds were aware of this and followed Him; and He welcomed them and began speaking to them about the kingdom of God, and curing those who had need of healing.

Five Thousand Men Fed

12 Now the day [ e ] was ending, and the twelve came up and said to Him, “Dismiss the crowd, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get [ f ] something to eat; because here, we are in a secluded place.” 13 But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” But they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 (For there were about five thousand men.) But He said to His disciples, “Have them recline to eat ( O ) in groups of about fifty each.” 15 They did so, and had them all recline. 16 And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and, looking up to heaven, He blessed them and broke them , and gave them to the disciples again and again , to serve the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied; and [ g ] the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve ( P ) baskets full .

Peter Says Jesus is The Christ

18 ( Q ) And it happened that while He was ( R ) praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the [ h ] people say that I am?” 19 They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20 And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “ ( S ) The [ i ] Christ of God.” 21 But He [ j ] ( T ) warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone, 22 ( U ) saying, “ ( V ) The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised on the third day.”

23 And He was saying to them all, “ ( W ) If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For ( X ) whoever wants to save his [ k ] life will lose it, but whoever loses his [ l ] life for My sake, this is the one who will save it. 25 For what good does it do a person if he gains the whole world, but ( Y ) loses or forfeits himself? 26 ( Z ) For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and the glory of the Father and the holy angels. 27 But I say to you truthfully, ( AA ) there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 ( AB ) About eight days after these sayings, He took along ( AC ) Peter, John, and James, and ( AD ) went up on the mountain ( AE ) to pray. 29 And while He was ( AF ) praying, the appearance of His face ( AG ) became different, and His clothing became white and [ m ] gleaming. 30 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, 31 who, appearing in [ n ] glory, were speaking of His ( AH ) departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions ( AI ) had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who were standing with Him. 33 And as [ o ] these two men were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “ ( AJ ) Master, it is good that we are here; and ( AK ) let’s make three [ p ] tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— ( AL ) not realizing what he was saying. 34 But while he was saying this, a cloud [ q ] formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And then ( AM ) a voice came from the cloud, saying, “ ( AN ) This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” 36 And when the voice [ r ] had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And ( AO ) they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.

37 ( AP ) On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, because he is my only son , 39 and a spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth ; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves . 40 And I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not.” 41 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” 42 Now while he was still approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the [ s ] ( AQ ) greatness of God.

( AR ) But while everyone was astonished at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44 “As for you, let these words sink into your ears: ( AS ) for the Son of Man is going to be [ t ] handed over to men.” 45 But ( AT ) they [ u ] did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not comprehend it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.

The Test of Greatness

46 ( AU ) Now an argument [ v ] started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, ( AV ) knowing [ w ] what they were thinking in their hearts, took a child and had him stand by His side, 48 and He said to them, “ ( AW ) Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; ( AX ) for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”

49 ( AY ) John answered and said, “ ( AZ ) Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him, because he does not follow along with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him ; ( BA ) for the one who is not against you is [ x ] for you.”

51 When the days were approaching for ( BB ) His [ y ] ascension, He [ z ] was determined ( BC ) to go to Jerusalem; 52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the ( BD ) Samaritans to [ aa ] make arrangements for Him. 53 And they did not receive Him, ( BE ) because [ ab ] He was traveling toward Jerusalem. 54 When His disciples ( BF ) James and John saw this , they said, “Lord, do You want us to ( BG ) command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them. [ ac ] 56 And they went on to another village.

Exacting Discipleship

57 ( BH ) As they were going on the road, ( BI ) someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but ( BJ ) the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 And He said to another, “ ( BK ) Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 60 But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and ( BL ) proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” 61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but ( BM ) first permit me to say goodbye to those at my home.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “ ( BN ) No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve ( A ) ( B )

9 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons ( C ) and to cure diseases, ( D ) 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God ( E ) and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. ( F ) 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” ( G ) 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

7 Now Herod ( H ) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John ( I ) had been raised from the dead, ( J ) 8 others that Elijah had appeared, ( K ) and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. ( L ) 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him. ( M )

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand ( N ) ( O )

10 When the apostles ( P ) returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, ( Q ) 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, ( R ) and healed those who needed healing.

12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”

13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”

They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.)

But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. ( S ) Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah ( T ) ( U )

18 Once when Jesus was praying ( V ) in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; ( W ) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” ( X )

20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.” ( Y )

Jesus Predicts His Death

21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. ( Z ) 22 And he said, “The Son of Man ( AA ) must suffer many things ( AB ) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, ( AC ) and he must be killed ( AD ) and on the third day ( AE ) be raised to life.” ( AF )

23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. ( AG ) 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. ( AH ) 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them ( AI ) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. ( AJ )

27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration ( AK )

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James ( AL ) with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. ( AM ) 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure, [ a ] ( AN ) which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, ( AO ) but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, ( AP ) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; ( AQ ) listen to him.” ( AR ) 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen. ( AS )

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy ( AT )

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”

41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” ( AU ) Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”

42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” ( AV ) 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, ( AW ) and they were afraid to ask him about it.

46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. ( AX ) 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, ( AY ) took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. ( AZ ) For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.” ( BA )

49 “Master,” ( BB ) said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”

50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.” ( BC )

Samaritan Opposition

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, ( BD ) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. ( BE ) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan ( BF ) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John ( BG ) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them [ b ] ?” ( BH ) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus ( BI )

57 As they were walking along the road, ( BJ ) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man ( BK ) has no place to lay his head.”

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” ( BL )

But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” ( BM )

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” ( BN )

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
