The Devil tries to make Jesus do wrong things

4 Then Jesus returned from the Jordan River. [ a ] He was full of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit led him into the wilderness. 2 He stayed there for 40 days and he did not eat anything. During this time the Devil tried to cause Jesus to do wrong things. [ b ] At the end of 40 days, Jesus was very hungry.

3 The Devil said to Jesus, ‘If you are the Son of God, speak to this stone. Tell it to become bread.’

4 ‘No!’ Jesus replied, ‘The Bible says that food alone cannot cause people to live.’ [ c ]

5 After that, the Devil led Jesus up to a high place. In one moment, he showed Jesus all the countries in the whole world. 6 He said to Jesus, ‘I will let you rule the whole world. I will give you power over all these things. That power all belongs to me. So I can give it to anyone that I choose. 7 You must bend down low and worship me. Then I will give you power over the whole world.’ [ d ]

8 ‘No!’ Jesus replied, ‘The Bible says,

“Only worship your Lord God.
He is the only one that you should obey.” ’ [ e ]

9 The Devil now took Jesus to Jerusalem. He took him to stand on the highest part of the temple. Then he said to Jesus, ‘If you are the Son of God, jump down from here to the ground. 10 You know that the Bible says:

“God will tell his angels to keep you safe.”
11 “They will hold you safely in their hands.
They will not let you hurt your foot on a stone.” ’ [ f ]

12 ‘No!’ Jesus replied. ‘The Bible says,

“Do not test the Lord God, to see if he will save you.” ’ [ g ]

13 In those ways, the Devil tried to make Jesus do many wrong things. When he had finished this, he left Jesus alone. He waited for another chance.

Jesus goes to Nazareth

14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee. The Holy Spirit continued to give him power. Everyone who lived near there heard the news about him. 15 He taught people in the Jewish meeting places. [ h ] Everyone said good things about him.

16 Jesus went to Nazareth, the town where he had grown up. On the Jewish day of rest, he went to their meeting place. [ i ] This was what he usually did. He stood up to read aloud from the Bible. [ j ]

17 They gave him the scroll that had the messages of God's prophet Isaiah. Jesus opened the scroll. He found the place where Isaiah wrote:

18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord God is on me.

He has chosen me to tell good news to poor people.

He has sent me to tell people who are in prison, “You can go free!”

I must say to people that cannot see, “See again!”

I must cause people that are like slaves to become free.

19 I must tell everyone, “This is the year when God will be kind to his people.” ’ [ k ]

20 When Jesus had read this to the people, he closed the scroll. He gave it back to an officer of the meeting place. Then he sat down to teach the people. Everyone in the meeting place was looking carefully at him.

21 Jesus said to them, ‘Today this message has become true. It has happened while you were listening.’

22 Everyone was talking about Jesus. They were surprised at the good way in which he spoke. They said to each other, ‘We know that he is only Joseph's son.’

23 Jesus then said to them, ‘Now you will tell me the proverb, “Doctor, make yourself well!” You will also say, “We have heard that you did many surprising things in Capernaum. This is your home town, so do the same things here!” 24 I tell you this: People do not accept a prophet of God who comes from their own town.

25 What I tell you is true. There were many widows in the country of Israel when Elijah was alive. At that time, it did not rain for three and a half years. So people were very hungry in all the country. 26 But God did not send Elijah to help a widow in Israel. Instead, God sent Elijah to the country called Sidon. There he helped a widow in a place called Zarephath. [ l ]

27 Here is another example: When God's prophet Elisha was alive, there were many people in Israel with a bad disease of the skin. But God did not make any of them well. Instead, he made a man well who was from the country called Syria. That man was called Naaman.’ [ m ]

28 The people in the meeting place heard what Jesus said. [ n ] They became very angry. 29 They stood up and they made him leave the town. They took him to the top of the hill outside the town. They wanted to throw him over the edge to the bottom. 30 But Jesus walked through the middle of the crowd and he went away.

Jesus causes a bad spirit to leave a man

31 Jesus went to a town in Galilee called Capernaum. On the Jewish day of rest, he taught the people there. 32 The people were very surprised at the things that Jesus taught them. He spoke with authority. 33 There was a sick man in the meeting place. He had a spirit of a bad demon that was living inside him. The spirit caused the man to shout loudly. 34 He said, ‘Jesus from Nazareth, leave us alone! Do not destroy us! I know who you are. You are God's Holy One!’

35 Jesus said to the spirit, ‘Be quiet! Come out of the man!’ Then the bad spirit caused the man to fall to the ground in front of the people. It came out of the man but it did not hurt him.

36 All the people were very surprised and they said to each other, ‘Listen to what this man says! He has power and authority. He tells bad spirits to come out of people, and they come out.’ 37 So they began to tell everyone about Jesus. Because of this, people in all the places near Capernaum heard the news about Jesus.

Jesus makes many people well

38 Jesus then left the meeting place and he went to Simon's home. The mother of Simon's wife was ill and her body was very hot. So they asked Jesus to make her well. 39 Jesus came and he stood near her. He told the illness to go away and immediately she was well again. She got up and she prepared food for her visitors.

40 When the sun was going down, people in the town brought to Jesus all those people who were ill. They had many different kinds of illness. Jesus put his hands on each ill person and they became well again.

41 Also, bad spirits came out of many people. They were shouting, ‘You are the Son of God.’ The spirits knew that Jesus was the Messiah. Because of this, Jesus stopped them. He would not let them speak.

42 Early the next morning, Jesus went to a place where he could be alone. The people went to look for him. When they found him they said, ‘Do not leave us! Please stay here with us.’ 43 Jesus replied, ‘I must go to other towns to tell everyone the good news. I will tell them how God rules in the lives of his people. That is what God sent me to do.’

44 Then he travelled to many towns in the country called Judea. He went into the Jewish meeting places and taught people there.

  2. 4:2 The Devil is an angel that refused to obey God. He also tries to cause people to do bad things.
  3. 4:4 The Devil knew that Jesus was very hungry, so he gave him the idea to make stones into food. Jesus knew that he had power to do anything. But he wanted only to obey God. He could make stones into food. But that was not what God wanted. Our bodies are not the most important part of us. Jesus came to give us food for our spirits. That part of us is more important. Jesus knew what God said in his book. And he answered the Devil with words from Deuteronomy 8:3 .
  4. 4:7 The Devil was telling Jesus that his work could be easier. He would let Jesus rule the world now, if he would obey him. Jesus knew that this was wrong. He knew that he must obey only God.
  5. 4:8 Jesus was speaking the words in Deuteronomy 6:13 .
  6. 4:11 The Devil was using the words from Psalms 91:11-12 . But he was not using them in a right way.
  7. 4:12 Jesus was speaking words from Deuteronomy 6:16 . He was standing on the highest part of the temple. This was 600 metres above the ground. He knew that God did not want him to jump. We must not get into danger just to see God save us.
  8. 4:15 Jews used their meeting places to pray together and to learn more about God.
  9. 4:16 The Jewish day of rest is our Saturday. This was a special day for them, when nobody worked.
  10. 4:16 The Bible that the Jews read was the Old Testament. See Isaiah 58:6 ; 61:1-2 .
  11. 4:19 Jesus read the words from Isaiah 61:1-2 , but he changed them a bit.
  12. 4:26 We can read about this widow in 1 Kings 17:7-24 .
  13. 4:27 We can read about Naaman in 2 Kings 5 .
  14. 4:28 Jesus told the people in the meeting place about himself. But they did not like the things that he was saying. They refused to believe that God had sent him.

Jesus Is Tempted by the Devil ( A )

4 Now filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan River. And then the Spirit led him into the desert. 2 There the devil tempted Jesus for 40 days. Jesus ate nothing during this time, and when it was finished, he was very hungry.

3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this rock to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “The Scriptures say,

‘It is not just bread that keeps people alive.’” ( B )

5 Then the devil took Jesus and in a moment of time showed him all the kingdoms of the world. 6 The devil said to him, “I will make you king over all these places. You will have power over them, and you will get all the glory. It has all been given to me. I can give it to anyone I want. 7 I will give it all to you, if you will only worship me.”

8 Jesus answered, “The Scriptures say,

‘You must worship the Lord your God.
Serve only him.’” ( C )

9 Then the devil led Jesus to Jerusalem and put him on a high place at the edge of the Temple area. He said to him, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! 10 The Scriptures say,

‘God will command his angels
to take care of you.’ ( D )

11 It is also written,

‘Their hands will catch you
so that you will not hit your foot on a rock.’” ( E )

12 Jesus answered, “But the Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” [ a ]

13 The devil finished tempting Jesus in every way and went away to wait until a better time.

Jesus Begins His Work in Galilee ( F )

14 Jesus went back to Galilee with the power of the Spirit. Stories about him spread all over the area around Galilee. 15 He began to teach in the synagogues, and everyone praised him.

Jesus Goes to His Hometown ( G )

16 Jesus traveled to Nazareth, the town where he grew up. On the Sabbath day he went to the synagogue as he always did. He stood up to read. 17 The book of Isaiah the prophet was given to him. He opened the book and found the place where this is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me.
He has chosen me to tell good news to the poor.
He sent me to tell prisoners that they are free
and to tell the blind that they can see again.
He sent me to free those who have been treated badly
19 and to announce that the time has come for the Lord to show his kindness.” ( H )

20 Jesus closed the book, gave it back to the helper, and sat down. As everyone in the synagogue watched him closely, 21 he began to speak to them. He said, “While you heard me reading these words just now, they were coming true!”

22 Everyone there said good things about Jesus. They were amazed to hear him speak such wonderful words. They said, “How is this possible? Isn’t he Joseph’s son?”

23 Jesus said to them, “I know you will tell me the old saying: ‘Doctor, heal yourself.’ You want to say, ‘We heard about the things you did in Capernaum. Do those same things here in your own hometown!’” 24 Then he said, “The truth is, a prophet is not accepted in his own hometown.

25-26 “During the time of Elijah it did not rain in Israel for three and a half years. There was no food anywhere in the whole country. There were many widows in Israel during that time. But the fact is, Elijah was sent to none of those widows in Israel. He was sent only to a widow in Zarephath, a town in Sidon.

27 “And there were many people with leprosy living in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha. But none of them were healed; the only one was Naaman. And he was from the country of Syria, not Israel.”

28 When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were very angry. 29 They got up and forced Jesus to go out of town. Their town was built on a hill. They took Jesus to the edge of the hill to throw him off. 30 But he walked through the middle of the crowd and went away.

Jesus Frees a Man From an Evil Spirit ( I )

31 Jesus went to Capernaum, a city in Galilee. On the Sabbath day he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching because he spoke with authority.

33 In the synagogue there was a man who had an evil spirit from the devil inside him. The man shouted loudly, 34 “Jesus of Nazareth! What do you want with us? Did you come here to destroy us? I know who you are—God’s Holy One!” 35 But Jesus warned the evil spirit to stop. He said, “Be quiet! Come out of the man!” The evil spirit threw the man down on the ground in front of everyone. Then the evil spirit left the man and did not hurt him.

36 The people were amazed. They said to each other, “What does this mean? With authority and power he commands evil spirits and they come out.” 37 And so the news about Jesus spread to every place in the whole area.

Jesus Heals Peter’s Mother-in-Law ( J )

38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon’s [ b ] house. Simon’s mother-in-law was very sick. She had a high fever. They asked Jesus to do something to help her. 39 He stood very close to her and ordered the sickness to go away. The sickness left her, and she got up and began serving them.

Jesus Heals Many Others

40 When the sun went down, the people brought their sick friends to Jesus. They had many different kinds of sicknesses. Jesus laid his hands on each sick person and healed them all. 41 Demons came out of many people. The demons shouted, “You are the Son of God.” But Jesus gave a strong command for the demons not to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.

Jesus Goes to Other Towns ( K )

42 The next day Jesus went to a place to be alone. The people looked for him. When they found him, they tried to stop him from leaving. 43 But he said to them, “I must tell the Good News about God’s kingdom to other towns too. This is why I was sent.”

44 Then Jesus told the Good News in the synagogues in Judea.

10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,

31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.

39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.

44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

The Temptation of Jesus

4 ( A ) Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, ( B ) returned from the Jordan and was led around [ a ] by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for ( C ) forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘ ( D ) Man shall not live on bread alone .’”

5 ( E ) And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of [ b ] ( F ) the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and [ c ] its glory, ( G ) for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I want. 7 Therefore if You [ d ] worship before me, it shall all be Yours.” 8 Jesus replied to him, “It is written: ‘ ( H ) You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only .’”

9 ( I ) And he brought Him into Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here; 10 for it is written:

‘ ( J ) He will give His angels orders concerning You, to protect You ,’

11 and,

‘ ( K ) On their hands they will lift You up ,
So that You do not strike Your foot against a stone .’”

12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been stated, ‘ ( L ) You shall not put the Lord your God to the test .’”

13 And so when the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

Jesus’ Public Ministry

14 And ( M ) Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and ( N ) news about Him spread through all the surrounding region. 15 And He began ( O ) teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.

16 And He came to ( P ) Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, ( Q ) He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and ( R ) stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

18 “ ( S ) The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me ,
Because He anointed Me to bring good news to the poor .
He has sent Me to proclaim release to captives ,
And recovery of sight to the blind ,
To set free those who are oppressed ,
19 ( T ) To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord .”

20 And He ( U ) rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and ( V ) sat down; and the eyes of all the people in the synagogue were intently directed at Him. 21 Now He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your [ e ] hearing.” 22 And all the people were [ f ] speaking well of Him, and admiring the [ g ] gracious words which were coming from His [ h ] lips; and yet they were saying, “ ( W ) Is this not Joseph’s son?” 23 And He said to them, “No doubt you will [ i ] quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! All the miracles that we heard were done ( X ) in Capernaum, do here in ( Y ) your hometown as well.’” 24 But He said, “Truly I say to you, ( Z ) no prophet is welcome in his hometown. 25 But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel ( AA ) in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a [ j ] severe famine came over all the land; 26 and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to [ k ] ( AB ) Zarephath, in the land of ( AC ) Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many with leprosy in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was [ l ] cleansed, but only ( AD ) Naaman the Syrian.” 28 And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; 29 and they got up and ( AE ) drove Him out of the city, and brought Him to the [ m ] crest of the hill on which their city had been built, so that they could throw Him down from the cliff. 30 But He ( AF ) passed through their midst and went on His way.

31 And ( AG ) He came down to ( AH ) Capernaum, a city of Galilee; and He was teaching them on the Sabbath; 32 and ( AI ) they were amazed at His teaching, because ( AJ ) His [ n ] message was delivered with authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man [ o ] possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Leave us alone! [ p ] ( AK ) What business do You have with us, Jesus [ q ] of ( AL ) Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are— ( AM ) the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus ( AN ) rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people , it came out of him without doing him any harm. 36 And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with one another, saying, “What is [ r ] this message? For ( AO ) with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And ( AP ) the news about Him was spreading into every locality of the surrounding region.

Many Are Healed

38 ( AQ ) Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ( AR ) suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him [ s ] to help her. 39 And standing over her, He ( AS ) rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and served them.

40 ( AT ) Now while ( AU ) the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He was ( AV ) laying His hands on each one of them and ( AW ) healing them. 41 Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are ( AX ) the Son of God!” And yet He was ( AY ) rebuking them and would ( AZ ) not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the [ t ] Christ.

42 ( BA ) Now when day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and they came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving them. 43 But He said to them, “I must also preach the kingdom of God to the other cities, ( BB ) because I was sent for this purpose .”

44 So He kept on preaching in the synagogues ( BC ) of [ u ] Judea.

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness ( A )

4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, ( B ) left the Jordan ( C ) and was led by the Spirit ( D ) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days ( E ) he was tempted [ a ] by the devil. ( F ) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, ( G ) tell this stone to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ [ b ] ” ( H )

5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. ( I ) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, ( J ) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’ [ c ] ” ( K )

9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ [ d ] ” ( L )

12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ [ e ] ” ( M )

13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, ( N ) he left him ( O ) until an opportune time.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

14 Jesus returned to Galilee ( P ) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. ( Q ) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, ( R ) and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth, ( S ) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, ( T ) as was his custom. He stood up to read, ( U ) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, ( V )
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news ( W ) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” [ f ] ( X )

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. ( Y ) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled ( Z ) in your hearing.”

22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked. ( AA )

23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown ( AB ) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’” ( AC )

24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown. ( AD ) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. ( AE ) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. ( AF ) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy [ g ] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.” ( AG )

28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, ( AH ) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way. ( AI )

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit ( AJ )

31 Then he went down to Capernaum, ( AK ) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, ( AL ) because his words had authority. ( AM )

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us, ( AN ) Jesus of Nazareth? ( AO ) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are ( AP ) —the Holy One of God!” ( AQ )

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. ( AR ) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

36 All the people were amazed ( AS ) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority ( AT ) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area. ( AU )

Jesus Heals Many ( AV ) ( AW )

38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked ( AX ) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, ( AY ) he healed them. ( AZ ) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” ( BA ) But he rebuked ( BB ) them and would not allow them to speak, ( BC ) because they knew he was the Messiah.

42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God ( BD ) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea. ( BE )
