- Leviticus Chapter 8
8 The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Fetch Aaron and his sons. [ a ] Bring their special clothes. Bring the oil. Bring the basket of bread that they made without yeast. Also bring the bull for the sin offering and the two male sheep. 3 Cause all the people to come to the door of the Tent of Meeting.’
4 Moses did what the Lord said. Moses and the priests and all the people came to the door of the Tent of Meeting. 5 Moses said to the people, ‘The Lord said that I must do this.’ 6 Moses washed Aaron and his sons with water. 7 Moses put a shirt on Aaron and he tied a belt round Aaron. He put a robe and an ephod on him. He tied the ephod with its special belt. 8 Moses put the breastpiece on Aaron, and he put the Urim and Thummim in its pocket. [ b ] 9 Moses tied a piece of linen as a hat round Aaron's head. On the front of this linen he put a plate of gold with valuable stones on it. The Lord had said that Moses must do this.
10 Moses put some of the special olive oil on the tabernacle and on everything in it. He did this to make those things holy. 11 Moses shook oil on the altar seven times. He put oil on the altar table and on all the tools to use with it. He put oil on the washing dish and on the table on which it stood. 12 Moses anointed Aaron's head with oil to make him holy. 13 He put a robe on each of Aaron's sons. He tied cloth belts around them and cloth hats on their heads. The Lord had commanded Moses to do this.
14 Moses brought the bull as a gift to God. Aaron and his sons put their hands on the bull's head. 15 Moses killed the bull. He put his finger in the blood. He put the blood on the horns of the altar. That made it holy. Moses poured out the blood that he had not used. He poured it onto the floor in front of the altar. This is how he made the altar ready to make sacrifices. 16 He burnt the fat and the kidneys and the best piece of the liver on the altar. 17 Moses burnt the meat with the inside parts and the skin of the bull outside the camp. The Lord had said that Moses must do this.
18 Moses brought a male sheep to burn as a gift to God. Aaron and his sons put their hands on the sheep's head. 19 Moses killed the sheep. He threw the blood onto the sides of the altar. 20 Moses cut the sheep into small pieces. He burnt the fat and the head and the pieces on the altar. 21 He washed the legs and the inside parts. He burnt them on the altar as an offering to the Lord . The smell of them while they were burning gave the Lord pleasure. The Lord had said that Moses must do this.
22 Moses brought the other male sheep. It was a gift. It showed that God had chosen Aaron's family to become his priests. Aaron and his sons put their hands on the sheep's head. 23 Moses killed the sheep. He put some of its blood on Aaron's right ear. He also put blood on the thumb of Aaron's right hand. And he put some on the big toe of his right foot. [ c ] 24 Moses did the same to Aaron's sons. Then he threw blood on all the sides of the altar. 25 Moses took the fat tail and the fat and the kidneys from inside the animal. He took the best piece of the liver from inside the animal. He took the top part of the right back leg. 26 Moses took two flat loaves of bread that they had made without yeast and a biscuit. He took them from the basket that was in front of the Lord . One of the loaves had oil in it. He put them on top of the fat and the leg. 27 Moses gave them to Aaron and to his sons. They lifted them up as a special gift to the Lord . 28 Moses took the special gift from them and he burnt it on the altar. The smell of it while it was burning gave the Lord pleasure. 29 Moses took his part of the animal, the meat of the ribs, and he lifted it up to the Lord . The Lord had said that Moses must do this.
30 Moses took some of the oil and some of the blood from the altar. He shook them on Aaron and his sons. He also shook some of the blood and some of the oil on their clothes. He did that to make them holy.
31 Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, ‘Cook the meat at the door of the Tent of Meeting. Eat the meat with the bread in the basket by the door of the Tent of Meeting. 32 Burn the meat and bread that you do not eat. 33 You must stay at the door of the Tent of Meeting for seven days. This will make you holy. You must stay for seven days to become holy. 34 The Lord said that you must do this to atone for your sin. 35 Remember that you must stay at the door of the Tent of Meeting. You must stay there for seven days and seven nights. The Lord told me that you must do this. If you do not obey him, you will die.’ 36 So Aaron and his sons did everything that the Lord had told Moses.
8 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Take Aaron and his sons with him and the clothes, the anointing oil, the bull of the sin offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread. 3 Then gather the people together at the entrance of the Meeting Tent.”
4 Moses did what the Lord commanded him. The people met together at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. 5 Then Moses said to them, “This is what the Lord has commanded must be done.”
6 Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water. 7 Moses put the woven shirt on Aaron and tied the cloth belt around him. Then Moses put the robe and the ephod on Aaron and tied the beautiful cloth belt around him. 8 Moses put the judgment pouch on Aaron and put the Urim and Thummim inside its pocket. 9 He also put the turban on Aaron’s head. He put the strip of gold on the front of the turban. This strip of gold is the holy crown. Moses did this just as the Lord had commanded.
10 Then Moses took the anointing oil and sprinkled it on the Holy Tent and on everything in it. In this way he made them holy. 11 He sprinkled some of the anointing oil on the altar seven times. He sprinkled the oil on the altar, on all its tools and dishes, and on the bowl and its base. In this way he made them holy. 12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head to make him holy. 13 Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons forward. He put their woven shirts on them, tied belts around them, and put cloth caps on their heads. He did everything just as the Lord had commanded.
14 Then Moses brought out the bull of the sin offering. Aaron and his sons put their hands on the bull’s head. 15 Then Moses killed the bull and collected its blood. He used his finger to put some of the blood on all the corners of the altar. In this way he made the altar ready for sacrifices. Then he poured out the blood at the base of the altar to make the altar ready for sacrifices to make the people pure. 16 Moses took all the fat from the inner parts of the bull. He took the fat part of the liver with the two kidneys and the fat on them. Then he burned them on the altar. 17 Moses took the bull’s skin, its meat, and its body waste outside the camp. He burned these things in a fire outside the camp. He did everything just as the Lord commanded him.
18 Then Moses brought the ram of the burnt offering. Aaron and his sons put their hands on the ram’s head. 19 Then Moses killed the ram. He sprinkled the blood around on the altar. 20-21 He cut the ram into pieces. He washed the inner parts and legs with water. Then he burned the whole ram on the altar. He burned the head, the pieces, and the fat as a burnt offering. It was a sweet-smelling gift to the Lord . Moses did everything just as the Lord commanded.
22 Then Moses brought the other ram. This ram was used for appointing Aaron and his sons to become priests. Aaron and his sons put their hands on the ram’s head. 23 Then Moses killed the ram. He put some of its blood on the tip of Aaron’s ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 24 Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons close to the altar. He put some of the blood on the tip of their right ears, on the thumb of their right hands, and on the big toe of their right feet. Then he sprinkled the blood around on the altar. 25 He took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat on the inner parts, the fat covering of the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh. 26 A basket of unleavened bread is put before the Lord each day. Moses took one of those loaves of bread, one loaf of bread mixed with oil, and one unleavened wafer. He put these pieces of bread on the fat and on the right thigh of the ram. 27 Then he put all of it in the hands of Aaron and his sons. Moses lifted these pieces to show he was offering them before the Lord . 28 Then Moses took these things from the hands of Aaron and his sons and burned them on the altar on top of the burnt offering. So this was the offering for appointing Aaron and his sons as priests. It was a sweet-smelling gift to the Lord . 29 Moses took the breast and lifted it to show he had presented it to the Lord . It was Moses’ share of the ram for appointing the priests. This was just as the Lord had commanded him.
30 Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar. He sprinkled some on Aaron and on Aaron’s clothes. He sprinkled some on Aaron’s sons who were with Aaron and on their clothes. In this way Moses made Aaron, his clothes, his sons, and his sons’ clothes holy.
31 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “I told you, ‘Aaron and his sons must eat these things.’ So take the basket of bread and meat from the ceremony for appointing the priests. Boil that meat at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. Eat the meat and bread at that place. Do this as I told you. 32 If any of the meat or bread is left, burn it. 33 The ceremony for appointing the priests will last for seven days. You must not leave the entrance of the Meeting Tent until that time is finished. 34 Everything we did today was what the Lord commanded us to do in order to make you pure. 35 You must stay at the entrance of the Meeting Tent day and night for seven days. If you don’t obey the Lord ’s commands, you will die! The Lord gave me these commands.”
36 So Aaron and his sons did everything that the Lord had commanded Moses.
8 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and a bullock for the sin offering, and two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread;
3 And gather thou all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
4 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him; and the assembly was gathered together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
5 And Moses said unto the congregation, This is the thing which the Lord commanded to be done.
6 And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water.
7 And he put upon him the coat, and girded him with the girdle, and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the curious girdle of the ephod, and bound it unto him therewith.
8 And he put the breastplate upon him: also he put in the breastplate the Urim and the Thummim.
9 And he put the mitre upon his head; also upon the mitre, even upon his forefront, did he put the golden plate, the holy crown; as the Lord commanded Moses.
10 And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them.
11 And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all his vessels, both the laver and his foot, to sanctify them.
12 And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.
13 And Moses brought Aaron's sons, and put coats upon them, and girded them with girdles, and put bonnets upon them; as the Lord commanded Moses.
14 And he brought the bullock for the sin offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bullock for the sin offering.
15 And he slew it; and Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar, and sanctified it, to make reconciliation upon it.
16 And he took all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and Moses burned it upon the altar.
17 But the bullock, and his hide, his flesh, and his dung, he burnt with fire without the camp; as the Lord commanded Moses.
18 And he brought the ram for the burnt offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.
19 And he killed it; and Moses sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.
20 And he cut the ram into pieces; and Moses burnt the head, and the pieces, and the fat.
21 And he washed the inwards and the legs in water; and Moses burnt the whole ram upon the altar: it was a burnt sacrifice for a sweet savour, and an offering made by fire unto the Lord ; as the Lord commanded Moses.
22 And he brought the other ram, the ram of consecration: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.
23 And he slew it; and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the tip of Aaron's right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot.
24 And he brought Aaron's sons, and Moses put of the blood upon the tip of their right ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet: and Moses sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.
25 And he took the fat, and the rump, and all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and the right shoulder:
26 And out of the basket of unleavened bread, that was before the Lord , he took one unleavened cake, and a cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and put them on the fat, and upon the right shoulder:
27 And he put all upon Aaron's hands, and upon his sons' hands, and waved them for a wave offering before the Lord .
28 And Moses took them from off their hands, and burnt them on the altar upon the burnt offering: they were consecrations for a sweet savour: it is an offering made by fire unto the Lord .
29 And Moses took the breast, and waved it for a wave offering before the Lord : for of the ram of consecration it was Moses' part; as the Lord commanded Moses.
30 And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.
31 And Moses said unto Aaron and to his sons, Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it.
32 And that which remaineth of the flesh and of the bread shall ye burn with fire.
33 And ye shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation in seven days, until the days of your consecration be at an end: for seven days shall he consecrate you.
34 As he hath done this day, so the Lord hath commanded to do, to make an atonement for you.
35 Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the Lord , that ye die not: for so I am commanded.
36 So Aaron and his sons did all things which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.
8 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “ ( A ) Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the ( B ) garments and ( C ) the anointing oil, and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread, 3 and assemble all the congregation at the doorway of the tent of meeting.” 4 So Moses did just as the Lord commanded him. When the congregation was assembled at the doorway of the tent of meeting, 5 Moses said to the congregation, “This is the thing which the Lord has commanded us to do.”
6 Then ( D ) Moses had Aaron and his sons come near, and he ( E ) washed them with water. 7 Then he ( F ) put the tunic on [ a ] Aaron and wrapped his waist with the sash, and clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him; and he wrapped his waist with the artistic band of the ephod, [ b ] with which he fitted it to him. 8 He then placed the [ c ] breastpiece on him, and in the [ d ] breastpiece he put the [ e ] ( G ) Urim and the Thummim. 9 He also placed the turban on his head, and on the turban, at its front, he placed ( H ) the golden plate, the holy crown, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
10 Moses then took ( I ) the anointing oil and anointed the [ f ] tabernacle and everything that was in it, and consecrated them. 11 He also sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, to ( J ) consecrate them. 12 Then he poured some of the ( K ) anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him. 13 ( L ) Next Moses had Aaron’s sons come near, and he clothed them with tunics and wrapped their waists with sashes, and bound [ g ] caps on them, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
14 Then he brought ( M ) the bull of the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering. 15 Next [ h ] Moses slaughtered it and took the blood and with his finger ( N ) put some of it around on the horns of the altar, and purified the altar. Then he poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it, to make atonement for it. 16 He also ( O ) took all the fat that was on the entrails and the [ i ] lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys and their fat; and Moses offered it up in smoke on the altar. 17 ( P ) But the bull and its hide, its flesh, and its refuse he burned in the fire outside the camp, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
18 Then he presented ( Q ) the ram of the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 19 And [ j ] Moses slaughtered it and sprinkled the blood around on the altar. 20 When he had cut the ram into its pieces, Moses ( R ) offered up the head and the pieces and the suet in smoke. 21 After he had washed the entrails and the legs with water, Moses ( S ) offered up the whole ram in smoke on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a soothing aroma; it was an offering by fire to the Lord , just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
22 Then he presented the second ram, ( T ) the ram of [ k ] ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23 [ l ] And Moses slaughtered it and took some of its blood and ( U ) put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. 24 He also had Aaron’s sons come near; and Moses put some of the blood on the lobe of their right ear, and on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot. Moses then ( V ) sprinkled the rest of the blood around on the altar. 25 He then took the fat, and the fat tail, and all the fat that was on the entrails, and the [ m ] lobe of the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh. 26 And ( W ) from the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord , he took one unleavened cake and one cake of bread mixed with oil and one wafer, and placed them on the portions of fat and on the right thigh. 27 He then ( X ) put all these on the hands of Aaron and on the hands of his sons, and presented them as a wave offering before the Lord . 28 Then Moses ( Y ) took them from their hands and offered them up in smoke on the altar with the burnt offering. They were an ordination offering for ( Z ) a soothing aroma; it was an offering by fire to the Lord . 29 Moses also took ( AA ) the breast and presented it as a wave offering before the Lord ; it was ( AB ) Moses’ portion of the ram of ordination, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
30 So Moses ( AC ) took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood which was on the altar, and sprinkled it on Aaron, on his garments, on his sons, and on the garments of his sons with him; and he consecrated Aaron, his garments, and his sons, and the garments of his sons with him.
31 Then Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, “ ( AD ) Boil the flesh at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and eat it there together with the bread which is in the basket of the ordination offering, just as I commanded, ( AE ) saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’ 32 And ( AF ) the remainder of the flesh and of the bread you shall burn in the fire. 33 And ( AG ) you shall not go outside the doorway of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the day that the period of your ordination is fulfilled; for he will [ n ] ordain you through seven days. 34 The Lord has commanded us to do as has been done this day, to make atonement on your behalf. 35 At the doorway of the tent of meeting, moreover, you shall remain day and night for seven days and ( AH ) fulfill your duty to the Lord , so that you will not die; for so I have been commanded.” 36 Aaron and his sons did all the things which the Lord had commanded through Moses.
8 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Bring Aaron and his sons, ( B ) their garments, ( C ) the anointing oil, ( D ) the bull for the sin offering, [ a ] ( E ) the two rams ( F ) and the basket containing bread made without yeast, ( G ) 3 and gather the entire assembly ( H ) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” 4 Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the assembly gathered at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
5 Moses said to the assembly, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done. ( I ) ” 6 Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water. ( J ) 7 He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him. He also fastened the ephod with a decorative waistband, which he tied around him. ( K ) 8 He placed the breastpiece ( L ) on him and put the Urim and Thummim ( M ) in the breastpiece. 9 Then he placed the turban ( N ) on Aaron’s head and set the gold plate, the sacred emblem, ( O ) on the front of it, as the Lord commanded Moses. ( P )
10 Then Moses took the anointing oil ( Q ) and anointed ( R ) the tabernacle ( S ) and everything in it, and so consecrated them. 11 He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all its utensils and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them. ( T ) 12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed ( U ) him to consecrate him. ( V ) 13 Then he brought Aaron’s sons ( W ) forward, put tunics ( X ) on them, tied sashes around them and fastened caps on them, as the Lord commanded Moses. ( Y )
14 He then presented the bull ( Z ) for the sin offering, ( AA ) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. ( AB ) 15 Moses slaughtered the bull and took some of the blood, ( AC ) and with his finger he put it on all the horns of the altar ( AD ) to purify the altar. ( AE ) He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. So he consecrated it to make atonement for it. ( AF ) 16 Moses also took all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, and both kidneys and their fat, and burned it on the altar. 17 But the bull with its hide and its flesh and its intestines ( AG ) he burned up outside the camp, ( AH ) as the Lord commanded Moses.
18 He then presented the ram ( AI ) for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 19 Then Moses slaughtered the ram and splashed the blood against the sides of the altar. 20 He cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces and the fat. ( AJ ) 21 He washed the internal organs and the legs with water and burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord , as the Lord commanded Moses.
22 He then presented the other ram, the ram for the ordination, ( AK ) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. ( AL ) 23 Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. ( AM ) 24 Moses also brought Aaron’s sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he splashed blood against the sides of the altar. ( AN ) 25 After that, he took the fat ( AO ) , the fat tail, all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, both kidneys and their fat and the right thigh. 26 And from the basket of bread made without yeast, which was before the Lord , he took one thick loaf, one thick loaf with olive oil mixed in, and one thin loaf, ( AP ) and he put these on the fat portions and on the right thigh. 27 He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they waved them before the Lord ( AQ ) as a wave offering. 28 Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar on top of the burnt offering as an ordination offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord . 29 Moses also took the breast, which was his share of the ordination ram, ( AR ) and waved it before the Lord as a wave offering, as the Lord commanded Moses.
30 Then Moses ( AS ) took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments ( AT ) and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated ( AU ) Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments.
31 Moses then said to Aaron and his sons, “Cook the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting ( AV ) and eat it there with the bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I was commanded: ‘Aaron and his sons are to eat it.’ 32 Then burn up the rest of the meat and the bread. 33 Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last seven days. ( AW ) 34 What has been done today was commanded by the Lord ( AX ) to make atonement for you. 35 You must stay at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and do what the Lord requires, ( AY ) so you will not die; for that is what I have been commanded.”
36 So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord commanded through Moses.
